    Gateway Bank

I just finished a near 3-year project with Gateway Bank that involved the purchase and finance of…read morereal estate, then the finance of an major renovation of the building. The project also included moving and expanding my dental office into the new space. That, too, involved the finance of lots of new dental and office equipment. I couldn't have asked for a better banking partner in a project that had so many moving parts. Being a smaller, locally owned bank, Gateway was nimble, creative and flexible. Like any construction project, it ended up over budget and behind schedule. Gateway was there at every step along the way. More than once they went to bat for me with the General Contractor to reign in costs. They were also persistent and thorough about arranging SBA loans for the project and were able to take advantage of their established relationships with the SBA brokers to make it all happen. My contact there was a V.P. with decision-making authority. The convenience of having his cell number - and round-the-clock access - cannot be overstated. Big projects have a life of their own and problems don't always present during "banker hours". Whenever I needed to talk money, Gateway was a phone call away. Done. The entire crew there is helpful and truly a pleasure to work with. As the project wound down, and the financial dust started to settle, I found myself regretting not having a reason to call the bank. Gateway Bank began my project as a banking partner, but ended as a friend. For commercial banking, these folks can't be beat.

Had an absolutely infuriating experience at this branch this morning. I realize my timing happened…read moreto be bad, which is why I sat waiting in the lobby for a banker to speak to for 45 minutes. (I didn't know you could make an appointment, now I do.) When I was finally "helped", I was told my email address is invalid. The email address that I've been using with their service for the past TWENTY YEARS. There's no way it's "invalid," as I got an email from WF not three days ago. Something was clearly broken on their end in their IT department. (Originally I attempted to conduct my business online via their website, but it was non-functional, so I tried the mobile version, which was also non-functional, so I had no options but to go in-person, which was WHY I was even here in the first place.) Max asked me for a different email, but I don't want to confuse my accounts or their system any worse than it already is, so I declined. He said it was "necessary" and I asked why, and he said "to send an electronic consent." WTF? I'm literally sitting in your branch in the flesh with my government ID and I can't VERBALLY consent? Are you for reals?? At a loss, Max picked up the phone to dial into some other Wells Fargo helpline. I had to repeat all my private info over the phone in public to this schmuck, who then proceeded to INTERROGATE me about how much/how long/how I planned to use the funds. He would not proceed without this detailed information. Extremely rude! Finally I was allowed to consent verbally, and I was given a couple of figures/rates. This is literally all I wanted. Just some real numbers so I could make an informed decision about my banking needs. Is that so much to ask?? These f*ckers made it difficult, insulting, and wasted over an hour of my time. This is NOT how you should treat a dedicated customer.

Manager could have stepped in early to help but didn't. Here is the kicker, after all that time I got to counter to buy Euros for our overseas trip. At the end of the transaction he tells me that I will get them in three days! They don't carry Euros anymore! Good by Wells. Never returning.

To make an extremely long story short, when I moved to Rochester, MN, I needed a bank. Since I was…read moreworking at Big Blue, it made sense to open an account with IBM Credit Union. So, I did. Over the years, IBM Credit Union changed names. It is now Think Bank. I still have my bank accounts with Think Bank. The transition was seamless. My home branch is still in Rochester. Last month, when I was in town, I needed to withdraw some money from my account. I was staying in Eagan, so it made sense to visit this branch. It's next door to the CVS where I used to do my rapid COVID-19 tests at the drive-thru before I flew home when it was mandatory that you were COVID-free. I didn't go inside the branch. I simply needed an ATM, so I hit the drive-thru. With all Think Bank branches, the first few lanes from the left are with for folks who require a teller to help with their transactions. If you need the ATM, it's typically in the far right lane. It was the case here. I pulled up to the machine, inserted my bank card, and proceeded to use the ATM to withdraw money. It was straightforward and easy. The downside was that if you wanted to make a cash deposit, you couldn't. There weren't any envelopes unless you had a spare one in your car. This ATM wasn't as advanced as some here in Canada where it takes cash as a deposit without an envelope. It wasn't all that busy at the branch. I was the only one at the drive-thru. There weren't a ton of cars parked in front of the branch. It was nice visiting this branch. I had a good ATM experience. I have visited most branches in the Twin Cities. The one in Apple Valley still needs a visit. I may have a new goal now to visit all locations. There are a few in Rochester that I've never visited, either. (360)
