First, let me say that my entire team at 21st CENTURY Home Health Services was absolutely amazing -- Neim, Ny, Anna, Meg, and Bernard! As a unit, they came through for me like the Avengers! I had very serious spine surgery and had to learn how to walk again. I'm a very independent man. I provide for and take care of others -- that's my love language. So coming out of surgery and not being able to walk, bend, twist, stand long enough to eat, or even do basic things for myself was very, very demoralizing. Having to depend on someone to wipe my butt, not being able to shower or bathe myself, and losing so much of my independence really affected me. It killed my spirit and drained me physically, mentally, and emotionally. It was a very tough road. But this team got me together and got me through it. I especially want to take a moment to highlight Meg and Bernard because these two went above and beyond for me. There wasn't a time I needed them that they didn't come through. At one point, I didn't have the correct bed or the proper equipment I needed . My head was hanging off one end of the bed and my feet were hanging off the other. It took three and a half weeks for me to finally get the proper equipment, and during that entire time, Meg and Bernard were grinding -- making calls, leaving messages, pushing people, and doing everything they could to get me what I needed. They were dealing with third parties and outside circumstances that were completely out of their control, but that didn't stop them from putting pressure on people because they saw that I wasn't being treated the way I should have been, and they were not okay with it. They could have easily just done their jobs and left it at that, but instead, they chose to go above and beyond. Late nights. Early mornings. Constant phone calls. Especially Meg -- she was even making calls on my behalf when she had her own child's birthday going on. That meant a lot to me because she didn't have to do that, but she did. And Bernard came through for me in person.He helped me get my joy back. He helped me smile again. He helped me regain my independence and, most importantly, helped me climb out of the dark place I was in mentally and emotionally. Within just a few days, his bed, table, and caregivers were in place, and support began immediately. Nurse Jamie, a skilled and compassionate male nurse, connected with my father right away. The caregivers also formed an instant, warm bond with my stepmom, who could no longer care for him on her own. Their kindness brought comfort and stability to our whole family. After 8-9 months of their attentive care, my father began eating again, walking, and truly thriving -- at 96 years old. He improved so much that he no longer qualified for hospice. We requested that the caregiver take notes for us about medications our mother received and the basic care given by the nurses and other specialty staff. Our mother was intubated so could not express herself verbally, but needed comforting care from time to time. We thought the person sent to work for us seemed capable and understood exactly what we wanted. However, when reviewing her notes, we couldn't tell what had gone on, especially when the nurse the next day would comment about a particular situation that had occurred. We told the manager of the V.A. office that it was not as we wanted and were told to instruct her again, which we did. A month or so later we were desperate for a caregiver for a couple of nights at another hospital where our mother had been moved. Visiting Angels sent the same caregiver. Thanks to the staff at the hospital, we found out that she was going to the lobby to sleep most of the night. A minor issue we have is that we didn't receive receipts for a few payments, though, thankfully, we had copies of our checks so they could satisfy tax deductions. V.A. is a franchise operation and each office is managed by different people.
