The Scotsman is a great Scottish pub that happens to serve pub food, and I think that's the right…read moreway to walk in. The space itself is genuinely grand, well-decorated, comfortable seating, a nice billiards room, and (maybe the highest compliment you can pay a pub) no old-bar smell or locals that make you feel out of place. The bathrooms were clean. The whole place was clean. For a neighborhood spot built around long conversations, it delivers. The drinks are the reason to come. The Riesling on the menu was good, and the winter bourbon (infused with apple), actually tasted spirited. What I appreciated most: no snootiness. Some Scottish and Irish pubs get precious about sticking to the house whisky program and gently disapprove if you order a cocktail or wine. Not here. They let you drink what you want to drink. Service was friendly and checked in at a good cadence. One note: the food came out way too fast. Appetizers hit the table, and the mains arrived about a minute later; we barely got into the fried cheese curds or tandoori fries before everything else was competing for space. The tandoor twist on the fries was a fun surprise, but generally the food read as average pub food. The salmon was dry (lesson learned: order it medium rare next time). The mashed potatoes on the shepherd's pie were the real highlight. 3.5 Stars. Credit where it's due: the menu is wide and actually vegan- and vegetarian-friendly, which is rarer than it should be in a pub, and there is a general playfulness in the atmosphere. What would push it higher: food that matches the level of the space, the excellent service, and the drinks. Pace out the courses, the salmon needs help, and strengthen the dishes a notch. We'll go back, just not for the salmon. The room, the drinks, and the staff all brought their A-game. The kitchen brought a B-game.

They have an impressive variety of drinks -- their drink menu is actually a full binder, with each page in a sheet protector. For our appetizer, we ordered the Chef's Table Signature Goat Cheese Risotto Balls -- absolutely amazing! The flavor was spot-on, and the portion was generous (three pieces, each just a bit smaller than a tennis ball). For entrées, my boyfriend ordered the Veal Schnitzel -- two tender pieces with a flavorful sauce that really tied the dish together. I had the Prime Delmonico Ribeye (12 oz) cooked medium-rare, and it was perfect: tender, juicy, and not too fatty. I asked to substitute the potatoes and vegetables with pasta, and they were happy to accommodate. We finished with the strawberry gelato, which was light, refreshing, and came with three scoops for $8 -- a great way to end the meal. Our server, Shane, was excellent -- friendly, attentive, and very knowledgeable about the menu. He checked in regularly without being intrusive and made the experience even better. Prices are very reasonable, especially given the quality and portion sizes. Ambiance: Cozy and intimate, so reservations are definitely recommended. Since the restaurant is small and fills up quickly, it can get a little loud when it is packed. There's limited space to wait inside, so I'd suggest adding a patio heater for guests waiting outdoors -- especially on cooler nights. Once inside, the temperature is comfortable and well controlled. We parked in the nearby public lot and took a short walk over. Overall, a wonderful dining experience. We're giving this place a solid 5 stars and will definitely be back the next time we're in Waynesville!

I rarely feel compelled to leave a review, but after reading the mixed reviews first and then…read moredining here last night, I just have to explain my experience. For starters, I had a reservation at 7:30pm and stood inside this tiny restaurant for over 20 minutes before anyone even acknowledged my presence. We were only a party of two and were seated 30 minutes late without an apology. The waiter was proficient, but rushed the entire time and seemed to be constantly running back and forth. The bread we were served (after the appetizers had already come out) was stale and rock hard. It was indedible and never should have made it's way to a table. The risotto balls were good, but the romaine salad was wilted and soggy, and I couldn't take more than two bites. The entrees were good, but nothing special compared to a true fine dining experience (I've had several and this wasn't even close). I can appreciate the concept behind the restaurant, but perhaps limit the menu options.and hire a hostess. I just had an exquisite dinner at a nice restaurant in Atlanta last week and it was over $200. Guess what? The cost of this dinner with tip was almost as much, but in comparison, the service was a joke and the food was subpar. I was not impressed and I won't return. If anyone thinks this restaurant is special, that tells me a lot about how many great places they have never eaten at before. Spend your money elsewhere and for the attitude here, the food better be phenomenal and it definitely was not.

I was there at an odd time so me and Valé had some excellent conversations. He definitely cares about his customers. For the Chicken Parmesan and pasta, I finished the whole thing. No problem. Tasty sauce. The bread was good and many might love it but I prefer traditional Italian bread. This is subjective. For the wine, I usually don't care about what kind of red wine I'm drinking but that was the best red wine I have ever had. It's called Montepulciano-D'Abruzzo. That's a lot of letters I'm not used to typing. I mean, I'm used to the letters but not in that order. Let's just call it Monte. This was a great meal and the vibe was incredibly warm. You're going to feel very welcomed here. I even noticed people coming up to Valé to hug him, thank him, etc. This is true Italian nature. They are going to feed you well and make you feel like family. Definitely recommended.

We ordered the garlic knots as an appetizer and they were not good. They were very tough and hard to eat. The marinara sauce was delicious. I ordered veal parm , neighbor had chicken parm , and hubby had veal Marsala. The veal and chicken parm came with so much mozzarella cheese it covered up the taste if the veal. The pasta with marinara was delicious. My hubby said the veal Marsala was tough. The prices are not cheap but the portions are generous. We might give them another chance.

McKayla took care of our group of 11 and provided superb service! Our drinks were never empty, our food came fast - even on a busy Saturday night, and she made sure we had everything we needed. I am not sure how she was able to do this so quickly; I think that she may be a ninja. Thank you, McKayla! Thank you, Valley Tavern, for a memorable evening! We will see you again soon!

We could walk here if we wanted and we are big fans of that. We came in when they had first opened so they were still figuring things out which I completely understand plus the hurricane coming through recently did help either. Looking over the menu they have a lot of your typical bar/pub options but a few you don't always find too. Looking for the drinks I was able to find my classic for Sylva but with a new name this time. At the Junction Pub it goes by the Loose Caboose which is a shot (for me Whiskey of course) and a beer which I picked Busch Light. You can't beat it. Our waitress brought our drinks and we ordered. I ended up going with the wings (12) tossed in Honey Sriracha. Our food came out pretty quickly which was nice. The sauce for the wings was good. Spicy with a nice sweetness but not overly sweet which can sometimes happen. For sure still had the kick I wanted. The wings for the most part were good. Cooked perfectly and nice and crispy. I will say I few of them were on the smaller side but you also got some monsters too to even it out. The service was excellent, and our waitress was extremely friendly and help us with questions throughout our meal. For sure a nice local pub we will be coming to often.
