Perhaps the xray person, dentist, and hygienist are capable, but I think they talked me into having an expensive procedure I didn't need and then the desk lady tried to charge me for additional things I didn't want. First problem - I'm on Medicare, which they don't accept, and United Healthcare, which offers a Dentegra discount at Aspen Dental. The lady at the desk refused to know anything about a discount (even though it's on their website) and I had to look it up on my phone to show her. Finally, that was approved. The Xray person took 20 Xrays in addition to a full head scan and stuck a camera in my mouth to take photos, which seemed a bit excessive. The dentist (Dr Kim) seemed nice but insisted I needed scaling and root planning. The finance person said that would cost $1542 after the discount. She said it was a one-time procedure and I wouldn't have to do it again. I was skeptical but made another appointment because the hygienist wasn't working that day. Supposedly the entire procedure was going to be done in one day, but the hygienist only did the right side of my mouth, and I had to make another appointment for the left half. The desk lady said the entire procedure would cost $1742, which I complained was not the original estimate. They were going to charge me $200 more for an electric toothbrush and a water pick that I didn't want. I told them to take that off and got the price back to $1542. I paid $730 for that visit. I went back 4 days later to get the left side done. The desk lady said I had to pay $812 up front before the work could be done. I said I've always paid for doctor and dentist visits after the work, but she insisted so I paid it. The hygienist did the left side and said I was supposed to come back in 4 months. When I went to schedule the next appointment, the lady said I would have to return every 3 or 4 months and it would cost $413 for each cleaning. I can't afford that and insisted on a 6 month appointment and the regular maintenance cleaning for $223. A week later, I got a bill in the mail for another $148. When I tried to phone the office, I got a voice mail. It's been several days and no one has called back. I do not intend to pay the bill and I will be canceling the next appointment. Even if the dental care is good, the outrageous charges and customer service is awful. There are 4-5 ladies at the front desk and they mostly stare at their computers and ignore the patients. All those cute motivational signs around the office don't make up for the fact that, at least at the Hamden, CT office, the practice is run by liars and cheaters. read more

Third visit: Lost a days wages and 3 hours in the waiting room waiting for a scheduled appointment with the oral surgeon. They made me prepay half to book the appointment and then pay the other half, before I was even treated knowing he was running 3 hours behind, which I asked for a refund and still have not received. Fourth visit: violently ill with a GI bug the evening after getting cavities filled that morning. Something's not right about this place. I wish I would've read the reviews prior. My time is valuable to me. I'm a working professional and I expect the healthcare providers in my life to also value my time. This place only values money. I showed up at 5:10 for my 5:15 appointment and was told that I could not be seen due to it being "late" as I was expected at 4:45. My appointment card, email from them, and my personal phone and written calendars all said "5:15". I even spoke to someone over the phone when they called me a couple of days ago to confirm my 5:15 appointment. No apologies today or accountability of their error. I just kept getting told that their front desk computer says, "4:45" so it was 4:45. I asked to speak to the manager but she would not come to the front. She relayed the same message through the same front desk person who was clueless. I did not schedule my own clients that afternoon so that I could make the 5:15 appointment that Aspen modified on their own. This is NOT the first time that they did this to my family so I now see that it is a convenient pattern to modify appointments then blame the patients for screwing up the date/ time. So this family of 5 will look for a practice with more integrity and accountability. Update: I got home and told my husband what happened. He stated that they did the exact same thing to him last month but they saw him when he showed them that They were incorrect. So this scheduling error on their part is definitely a regular 'thing' but they will act like it's your fault and play stupid when they know it's a constant issue on their end. (Which is why when I asked to speak to the manager she never came but I could hear her speaking to the front desk clerk for her to relay her message to me). I made an appointment and told the woman that I needed my dentures repaired. She said that was fine and scheduled me. I came in, filled out paperwork and then was led to X-ray. I refused as I just needed one tooth replaced. The tech said that they don't do denture repair and that they might be able to help me but only after I had X-rays. WTF? No I don't need to expose my head to radiation when all I need is one plastic tooth fixed. I told the tech I was lied to and was not happy. I have been a patient at the Hamden CT Aspen Dental for years. I have an appointment scheduled for Monday 4/23/18 at 4:15pm. Today is Thursday 4/19/18, I got a call at 6:55pm and was told that because I did not respond to a text message they sent at 2:10pm today to confirm my appointment, they gave my space to another patient. I asked to speak with a manager, and she told me the same thing. On another occasion, my wife schedule an appointment for our girls for a Saturday morning. She did confirm it via their text message. We took the kids to their appointment that day, and the office was closed. Not even a phone call back to apologize. Never mind the fact that last year, I ordered and paid in full for an electric OralB tooth brush from them. When I showed up to pick it up a couple days after I got a call from them, they told me they sold it to another patient. I had to leave and wait for them to re-order me another tooth brush. I gave them a second and third chance, and they blew it today. I will be taking my business elsewhere. What kind of business treats their customers like this? I've never been prompted to write a Yelp review about bad service, but I feel compelled to do so now to warn any other potential patients of Aspen Dental about a very specific scam. If you want to schedule an appointment for a routine exam and standard prophylactic cleaning (the type that most insurance plans cover or partially cover), save yourself the time and hassle and schedule with a different dentist. Aspen Dental deviates from standard dental practice by requiring a first appointment for an exam only without a cleaning. Every other dentist I've been to performs an exam and standard cleaning in the same appointment (usually with the cleaning first). Aspen Dental does this for a very specific self-serving reason, but of course they won't tell you that when you book the appointment. They'll just hedge and say they need to "see what type of cleaning you need." You see where this is going... After the initial exam, Aspen Dental will try to up-sell you on your treatment plan and convince you that you need enhanced cleaning procedures that are likely not covered by your insurance (unless you have a Cadillac plan). I was told that I was in the "pre-gingival" gum health stage (which they explained meant that I did not yet have gingivitis), but Aspen Dental added "gingival irrigation" procedures to my treatment plan that would need to be scheduled as a second appointment before finally getting to the prophylactic cleaning covered by my insurance at a third appointment. The additional procedures would have cost me $200 out-of-pocket. When I explained to the office manager that I couldn't afford those procedures and wanted only the standard prophylactic cleaning covered by my insurance, I was told no one could change my treatment plan. To be clear, that "treatment plan" was entered into the Aspen Dental system about 3 minutes prior by the dentist and hygienist who examined me. Neither one of them explained that they were adding enhanced procedures not covered by my insurance, even after I explicitly expressed concern about my insurance coverage and explained that my only goal was to get the prophylactic cleaning covered by my insurance. The dentist and hygienist just said the office manager would go over the treatment plan and insurance concerns with me afterward. The office manager told me it was flat out impossible to schedule the standard cleaning until I first paid for and received the enhanced cleaning. When I asked why, I was told it would be unethical and that Aspen Dental would be violating ADA guidelines if they made an exception to their policy. After a couple more calls to the Aspen Dental national line to try and understand, I'm still not sure what the policy is, but it is certainly not a policy concerning patient care or ethical dentistry. It's quite clearly about profit and it takes advantage of people who are unfamiliar with standard dental practices. You know how I know? Because I promptly left Aspen Dental and booked an appointment for the following week with a dentist down the road for the standard prophylactic cleaning covered by my insurance. The exact same cleaning that Aspen Dental told me it would be unethical to provide to me. One appointment, cleaning first followed by an exam. Standard practice. $0 out-of-pocket. Oh, and that dentist told me I had excellent dental hygiene and healthy gums. No gingival irrigations necessary. Don't get scammed! read more

I went in for a toothache and came out with upper and lower partials! The speed with which everything happens in this office can be unnerving. If your past experiences with dentists are like mine, you're used to things moving more slowly and you have time to process what's going to happen. Within 2 weeks of my first visit I had 8 extractions and a handful of fillings, as well as deep cleaning to address periodontal disease. They schedule all your appointments for you, which is convenient but again, things move fast. The other thing that took me off guard was the way the financing works, since I, like a lot of people, don't have dental insurance. After going through the exam/x-ray process you speak with the business manager who gives you treatment plan options and the bill. They help arrange consumer credit financing if you want it, but either way you pay up front and to me that's unusual for medical care. I don't know - maybe you pay up front for a nose job too (no, they don't do nose jobs.) When it comes to quality of care there's nothing to complain about. The dentist took her time and answered all my questions, and was concerned with my level of comfort. My post-op experience was as good as you could ask for. There was no lingering pain and my healing was quick (I think). The only complaint I have was the lack of nitrous during the exractions. I need to stress that the dentist was a whiz with the numbing (I'd always been difficult to numb) and there was no real pain. But teeth are not meant to come out easily and there's a lot of tugging and digging going on; a little gas would have gone a long way. Still, she gave me the correct meds for post-op pain, and I was very comfortable over the next few days. My dental assistant - Shelby - was the best! She not only assists with the extractions but makes the impressions and handles most of the fittings. I just had the cushions done today and my partials feel much better. She's very good at what she does and has a great way with the patients. Thanks Shelby! My hygienist was very good. It was a deep cleaning and scaling and my teeth felt so clean afterwards. The office seems to run very well and I didn't have any scheduling problems. Everyone is friendly and can answer any questions. About the only thing I can't comment on is the charges. I don't know how prices are set or how they compare to other dentists. I was in a great deal of pain when I first went there and didn't really have time to comparison shop (although I guess I could have just had them extract the one that was bothering me and shopped around.) But the quality of their work so far has been excellent. They owe me permanent partials in about six months, so I also can't comment on that. The temps seem to fit ok. read more

They scammed my father. I know he's old but when you prey on the elderly you are sick. They signed him up for a 5900 dollar care credit line that goes up to 25% if you don't pay, which he can't. I went to Aspen dental for the first time about 2 years ago. My teeth were really bad due to a medical condition. I ended up needing dentures. I really liked that their procedure includes you leaving with temps. That way I was never with out teeth. This made me feel better about myself and that means a lot. They made me a second pair that fit better after the swelling in my mouth went down and then my permanent pair which I have now. The complete process takes a while but they make sure to get everything correct. When I needed a fitting after almost a year they took me the same day. However, I have to admit I had a pretty good experience today, and I'm going to have to chalk it up to Cassandra. She was genuinely friendly, not the fake kind of "I'm just doing my job" friendly. When I first arrived, all of my information was taken for the second time and I was asked which aspen I reported to previously. Mind you, I provided the front desk associate w all of that information when I made the appointment. Apparently, they lost all of the information they took from me the first time around. I arrived twenty minutes early and overheard a patient complaining about the long wait. That was my queue. I was there to discuss an issue gone wrong at a prior aspen I went to. I waited two hours for a five minute evaluation! After an hour I was going to head for the door, but they came out in as I was heading out. After getting an X-ray, they sat me in the exam room for another hour. When the dentist saw me, he silenced me with his hand while I was talking to him about the issue w my tooth. All he could say is the filling was close to a nerve and I needed a root canal. Not happening! My nerves are fine, the tooth is fine. No other suggestions? After a two hour wait, and a prior filling gone wrong...you get nothing aspen. Try not to over book in the future. read more

I was in pain for a few days and knew the only way to help was a visit to the dentist. I went into the office for my first time and the place was nice and had friendly staff. I went in for my X-rays and checkup and the doctor asked me what was wrong. I told her about my tooth pain then she examined my mouth again. They then told me all the work needed. The writeup was very high they then told me to come back the next day and we'll organize everything. Dr never mentioned anything about a prescription for the pain and I was in shock by the price of the surgery I would need so I forgot. I went back the next day and it was a complete waste of time. My insurance never called even though the dentist tried (this was not their fault just my insurance) but they never let me know so I came back anyways. I asked for prescription for my pain and they said the Dr was with a patient but she will call it in. That was around 430... 530 comes around and nothing so I call and they gave me the same excuse. The office closed at 7 so I went in at 650ish and they said the same thing but she would be out of the procedure at 730 and she will call my prescription in. Well that never happened and I was left in pain 3 more days then I should've been. The office has never called me back and I will certainly not be going back to this office or any Aspen Dental ever again. They want your money they do not care about you. If I could give zero stars I would but I can say the hygienist was very nice and guided me on the right path to better hygiene. read more

I have been going to Aspen Dental for about 1-/1/2 yrs and while all of the dental experts there have been great,Cassandra(that did my exam,decay prevention evaluation and cleaning) made me the most comfortable i have ever been.And let me say,like a lot of people i hate going to the dentist.I have been dreading the dentist visit ever since i can remember and i am close to 50 yrs old. Most people,appreciate any helpful advise,but to be lectured about not flossing or needing brushing more takes a special touch...These topics were brought up by Cassandra clearly,but not offensively..i know it is just my opinion,but if anyone wants a GREAT dental hygenist,and a fantastic tooth cleaning,i would thoroughly recommend Hamden Aspen Dental.... Do not go here. They told me they did a root canal and I certainly paid for one. The dentist slipped and hit my tongue with needle and inserted novocain. And after all the pain and almost going to E.R for my throat closing up, they never really did a root canal and I had to get a refund from them. read more

Had my first appt for X-rays and cleaning. X-ray and exam were free. Cleaning was $82 with digital "coupon." Everything was smooth & efficient from the beginning through to the end. The girl who took the X-rays was expert and quick! Dr. Lee was kind and thorough in his exam and discussion. Amanda cleaned my teeth and did a bang-up job, and also went through my X-rays with me using a screen in front of the chair. My teeth feel wonderful. No one tried to sell me anything.
