Here is a copy of an email I sent to corporate. I'll update when they respond. I am writing to share about my experience at the Bloomingdale location. On Tuesday, January 13th, I called into work and scheduled an emergency appointment. The dentist, dental assistant, and hygienist were very kind. They walked me through the process explaining I would need to be on antibiotics for at least two days before they could remove the tooth. The office manager helped me schedule the cleaning and extraction for the following Monday when my work was closed for MLK day. (For context, I work in Northbrook - leaving my home at 6 am and returning around 6:45 pm. Your normal business hours do not work for me.) Initially, she said she didn't have any appointments for the extraction but when I suggested I would pay for my emergency appointment and call other Aspen Dental locations so I could have the rest of the procedures done on my day off, she said she would make it work. I trusted her to do so and paid the required 50% down-leaving with a Rx for antibiotics. Yesterday, I arrived for my 1:30 pm appointment. Wanting to avoid having to talk after my extraction, I asked to take care of payment right away. (I wasn't sure how I would feel after so I wanted to be able to just leave.) During my cleaning, the hygienist told me that because my appointment for the extraction was not until 4 pm (it was just after 2:15 at that point) I was welcome to leave and run errands or hang out in the waiting area. This was the first problem. The office manager did not tell me there would be this large of a gap between appointments. Again, I would have called other Aspen Dental locations. Initially, I chalked this up to a miscommunication. Without another option, I left the office after my cleaning, returning at 3:45 pm. This was the second problem. When I walked back in, the receptionist stated that she had called me. (I was in my car in the parking lot - I never received a call.) She stated that the doctor was running late and wanted to know if I could reschedule. I explained that, no, I had specifically agreed to continue at this location because I could have both the cleaning and extraction done on my day off. She slipped in the back and spoke with the doctor. When she returned, the story had changed and she said the doctor "does not do extractions". Problem three. I questioned which was true - was she running late or did she "not do" extractions. The woman just stood there. Assuming the later was true, I then asked why they hadn't told me they were unable to do the extraction when I first arrived for my cleaning. It clearly showed an extraction on their books as I had to sign "after-extraction care" paperwork. If the dentist truly "doesn't do extractions", why go through with having me pay for the procedure and sign off on all the forms?!?!? Had I known at 1:30, I might have been able to secure an appointment at another Aspen Dental location and not be leaving in pain. The receptionist did not have an answer. She did call the Palatine location after I asked her to call other locations but, of course, they were not able to accommodate me so late in the day. So, here I am - eight days later and still in pain. All I wanted was some care and compassion for a dental emergency. While looking for your corporate customer service email, I read on the website that each location is "independently owned". Problem number four. This entire situation has me questioning if the office manager had actually arranged things as she promised on the 13th. Was everything I experienced just a ruse to ensure I remained at this "independently owned" location rather than taking my money to a different location?!?! She was quick (looking back perhaps too quick) to change her answer about appointment availability when I suggested going to a different location. I truly hope you will look into this matter and I await your response. read more

I took my son in for a broken tooth. Was told he needed a deep cleaning, several cavities filled and a root canal. I didn't believe them, so I took my son to another dentist. Other dentist tells me the broken tooth is beyond repair and needs to be extracted. No deep cleaning needed. Aspen Dental is a scam in my opinion. How are they willing to do a root canal on a tooth that is beyond repair and try to charge for an unnecessary procedure!Believe all the bad reviews. I needed a tooth pulled. Scheduled it and had it done Wednesday. The assistant was great and very kind. The dentist was nice but may have been in a rush. The shots were extremely painful. He gave me a third shot and said he would be back in 10 minutes but returned in 5. He started on my. Tooth and it was the most painful thing I have ever endured. He kept saying it's only pressure when did pressure hurt so much. I thought, yes that's what they say when you are having a baby. It's not pain,it's just pressure. I am very unhappy with my experience. Be careful if you go there. Care quality could definitely be improved. read more

My hygienist is definitely the best employee at aspen, she makes sure I'm comfortable and goes above and beyond every time. Does a very thorough cleaning and you can easily tell she loves what she does. I've had root canals done here and fillings done and Dr.Ramires was great but the new doc isn't as careful or professional but he's very knowledgeable. read more

Drove my 75 year old dad here for extractions requiring anesthesia. The person at the front desk was friendly enough, but felt like we were hurried through the sign-in process with a lot of initialing and signatures. I was then moved to an internal waiting area while my dad's procedure was handled. About 45 minutes later, I heard one staff member loudly saying my dad's name and insisting he wake up and keep his eyes open. Moments later another staff member told me to pull the car around to the side door. I confirmed that everything was okay because it seemed rather quick (especially since he just woke up) and they told us ahead of time that the procedure itself would be about 45 minutes. I've been his driver for plenty of other medical visits where we have to wait for him to fully come out of anesthesia before departing. It felt like a safe assumption that we'd be there for closer to 2 hours total to handle the extractions and then recover from the anesthesia and make sure the understandable bleeding was managed. When I pulled up to the specified door away form the front of the building, two of the staff were holding my dad up barely helping him walk through a small back hallway and out toward the car. His mouth was packed with bloody gauze and it was apparent that he was not remotely lucid from the anesthesia nor able to walk on his own. I asked if this was a normal procedure - to discharge a patient in this condition - and got dirty looks from the staff who asked if I wanted to talk to the doctor. Considering my dad was already slumped in the passenger seat of the car, and it was rainy, I wasn't exactly going to delay the trauma any further. It's no wonder why they'd want to use the back door to slide patients out of sight... anyone in the front lobby would be completely disgusted by the condition they discharge their patients. If I'd seen something like this while we were arriving, we would not have gone through with it! Today was a necessary visit at this location due to the availability of the surgeon on a day that we were available which was also a huge ordeal becuase he visits different locations on different days. I can say for certain that with today's unacceptably poor service, I can guarantee we will never return read more

A nightmare at the Bolingbrook IL office. unbelievable place. They left me for two weeks with a fungal infection and ulcers in my mouth, they charged me for services that should have been discussed with me and explain they are not covered by my insurance and when u complained abruptly cancelled my appointments with no forewarning. The office manager is aggressive and tries intimidation instead of reasoning. I am engaging with an attorney and my insurance Aetna to address what they have done. read more

Clean Teeth I've been to high end dental offices with one location, and bigger chains like Aspen Dental. The high end locations are usually boutique with a fancy sitting room, coffee machine, etc. The bigger chains are nice too, but may not feel as boutique. When it comes to your teeth the lobby and sitting room should not be top of list. The last high end boutique dental office I went to overcharged me for everything. I get 2 cleanings a year, and my 2nd visit was going to be out of pocket because my limit was hit on the first visit. That said, I liked Aspen Dental. I felt they were honest and had my needs at the heart of their plan. They were very nice, and this office is nice too. read more

Horrible experience!!! They gave me a quote for all dental work (deep cleaning, extraction and implant) for $6200 without insurance 2 months ago. I obtained dental insurance, called to make sure they took my insurance, scheduled an appointment, once they quoted me more than originally with insurance. They wouldn't give me a written quote. The staff didn't know what was going on. One girl said it now would cost $1600 with insurance, another said $1100, and once they had my credit card they said $7000! Charged me $700 for deep cleaning the Bottom teeth only with my insurance!! Argued with in an unprofessional manner and now refuse to return my calls. Do not go to this or any Aspen Dental location!!!!!!! read more

I called Aspen's main phone number to confirm if they accepted BCBS Medicare Advantage Insurance and was told "YES." So I made an appointment through their main office. I received a phone call within minutes from the local Aspen office confirming my appointment. I asked again if my insurance was accepted. I was placed on hold while they checked if my plan was accepted. Several minutes later, I was told that Aspen DOES accept BCBS Medicare Advantage so I confirmed my appointment but when I showed up for my treatment I was told Aspen does NOT accept my insurance, because they are Out-of-Network and NO coverage is accepted. I was told that the office left a message on my phone the night before my a.m. appointment; however, I NEVER received any such message. Patient Communication needs improvement. I revoke my good review of this place. AVOID AT ALL COSTS! At one point they helped me when I was in desperate need and provided good care for those needs. BUT OVER A YEAR LATER FROM MY INITIAL REVIEW: I received a statement from my insurance (which I argued with them the last time they accepted it even though they told me they denied it) they made me pay out of pocket for all my procedures including some extractions. THEN I got a notice from my insurance (that they DID except) that they've been billing through them since last YEAR! I have paid over $3,000 out of pocket for a few procedures I was in desperate need of getting taken care of. They were a last resort. My insurance has only been billed for $1,386. The "cost of procedure" on the insurance paper BEFORE INSURANCE was more than half the amount that I ended up paying out of pocket! One thing I was charged for was almost $900, the insurance said that the actual cost that they reported to my insurance was $271 and insurance covered 80% of that. So they have been billing my insurance, telling THEM I haven't paid (even though I prepaid for all services prior to) and having me pay 150% or MORE of what they reported to my insurance out of pocket! I'm lucky that I keep every single receipt for ANYTHING for cases like this. Aspen dental billing is absolutely a scam. My insurance company tried calling them while I was on the line 3 times and they did not answer the first time, put on hold then hung up on the second time, the third time they picked up after 4 rings and hung up immediately. Not even one word or breath before hanging up on me and my insurance agent! Absolutely 0 stars. I will continue working with my insurance company to resolve this. It is disgusting that I am in my early 20's and they tried to take advantage of me thinking that I was dumb. Nope, my parents taught me well and you guys are the biggest scammers I have ever dealt with. Now I know how they stay open with the terrible reviews they significantly over charge you, claim your insurance isn't accepted/doesn't cover the procedure and then charge your insurance behind your back. Never had a dental office state that xrays and a routine cleaning have to be on separate days before this week dealing with Aspen. Not sure if they're short staffed but that's insane to me to make 2 trips for basic Dentistry. As a military vet I can tell you the customer service has gone down here over the years and they may lose many patients over nonsensical policies like the one previously stated. read more

This place is literally scamming their customers including me. 9 months later I am now getting bogus bills for well over 1000 dollars, when I call the office I cannot reach them, when I call customer service they say the charges are "because insurance didn't cover something", 9 months later?! Impossible, that is all in the books already, how this branch or even this company is still in business is beyond me. Not to mention the terrible work that I have gotten on my root canal and crown, which I will need to get fixed and spend more money on. If this doesn't get resolved soon I am 100% going to sue. My mom got her teeth pulled in February for full dentures - it is now OCTOBER and her permanent dentures are still not right! My mother has stage 4 cancer and hasn't been able to eat right for months and has now lost 45 pounds because of this ordeal. She never lost a pound from cancer but has lost all this weight due to the dentist - DO NOT COME HERE FOR SERIOUS WORK! They have zero concern for her health and well being - this is honestly becoming negligent. They cancel appointment after appointment for not having the items needed. BE WARNED! YET AGAIN ANOTHER CANCELLED APPOINTMENT! Engaging with a lawyer now to see if there is any legal action that can be done due to the negligence we have received. read more

I've never seen sooo many negative reviews! Well, allow me to contribute to this dung heap. I engaged thier services following a ridiculous negotiation on the price of my treatment plan. I tore it down to approx. half of the opening price. Just like used cars. I gave them $3k as deposit and let it roll ! There was a little time left for the appointment so only a suspiciously short and painless "scraping", and a squirt of Floride was performed. Following the so far seedy experience I found a different Dental Group. My $3k needed to be refunded minus the little work they had done. So, for an unusually timid scraping (20 minutes) and some Floride that frankly I didn't even notice; they had the audacity to withhold $1116.00 from my refund. $1116.00 !!! I got stuck like a pig at slaughter! My attempt to attain some assistance with the matter became too tedious to continue. From the laughable negotiation, to the obscene charges (according to other dentists)...this is a racket to AVOID LIKE THE PLAUGE. read more

Please listen to other reviews. This place is a scam. I went to this place one day in extreme pain, the dentist ended up telling me I needed my wisdom teeth out and made me pay $974 (after insurance) up front for the procedure. We went in for my wisdom teeth removal appt and the surgeon immediately advised to NOT get my teeth removed, and suggested to get my cavities filled first to see if that was causing the pain. Strange, but ok. We went to a different dentist the same day. And Aspen would NOT send my X-rays, info, etc to the new place. They lied and said they sent it but never did. And I was never refunded the $974 for the procedure that never happened!! Had to file a dispute with the bank. All in all, please avoid these scammers and do not give them a single penny. read more

I had a 5:30 appt at this location and I didn't get called back to the waiting room until 5:55pm. Fine, I understand they're busy on a Monday night. I get my x-rays from a super nice technician, very friendly and personable. My favorite part of the experience was the staff! However, I did notice everyone there was very young. Not necessarily bad as I'm 28 myself but I didn't feel that there were many years of experience there. The worst part of my experience was that after my x-rays I waited to get my cleaning and instead I got a "specialist" who looked at my gums and bones for any issues. I didn't get my free cleaning covered by my insurance. Having no issues there, she said the doctor would be in soon to take a look. About 45 minutes later the doctor comes in and at that point I'm losing my patience. She looks me over, gives me my diagnoses, and says the office manager will be in shortly to go over payment and scheduling options with me. Another 35 minutes goes by and it's well over 7pm and I want to go home. I decide I can't wait any longer and leave the room where some of the staff is packing up, coats on, ready to go home and start scrambling to find someone to help me as if they forgot about me. Eventually the receptionist helps me who, again, was very nice. TLDR; poor timing, appt meant nothing, staff was leaving before me because they forgot about me read more

I rarely leave a review. I did leave one about my first visit to aspen and was not the best either. I figured I'd give it up to one bad experience. Made my six month cleaning appt. The day before I was to go to my January appt they canceled and said I needed to reschedule. I called to reschedule and we agreed to the 24th. That was in about 2 weeks later. Went in on the 24th, she had a hard time finding my appt and says "oh your appt is for April 24th?" Ok I must have misunderstood when making the appt but why would I need to wait 3 months? When they canceled on me. She looked in the computer and said she could get me in 3 weeks. Ok. The morning of that appt they canceled again. I was done! Will never go back. It's always something. I wish I could give minus zero stars. I am so angry right now. How ironic is it that I go in with no dental issues except for a teeth cleaning forced to take X-rays and exam without getting a teeth cleaning and come home and broke a tooth the same evening. X Here is the story if you want to read it. I just needed anyone in a hurry to hear that outcome is horrible. It is so out of character for me not to research a place before patronizing it. I guess I got lured by the commercial. It didn't dawn on me to check the reviews until after I left there. I went to Aspen yesterday specifically to only get my teeth cleaned. I informed them that I have a dentist at the VA hospital and a dental hygienist but due to COVID, the VA wasn't allowing the hygienist was allow the suction to be used, they were only using the hand tool. Aspen insisted on X-rays and an exam, I went along with it against my better judgement, then the same tech that did the X-rays also ran some device around in my mouth pressing along my teeth. I had never seen this device before, then the hygienist comes in and measure the pockets in my gum which is normal. I ask her how much is the cleaning going to be and she says I have to wait until I see the dentist so they can give me my complete dental plan with prices. The dentist came in. She was really nice. She checked me out and said that things looked pretty good and that she only see one area that needs more attention but the tooth is in good shape and once cleaned the gum would repair itself. I asked how much it is and she said she will go and check the schedule and let me know. Then comes a 4th person, she is the Office Manager so right then and there I knew she is the money lady. it was going to be costly. Long story short, they wanted $300+ for a cleaning not a whitening or a scaling just a basic cleaning and asked for prepayment but "settled" for a $100 down payment. Who asks for prepayment? That's some real malarky. I come home later in the evening and have a granola bar, why did my tooth crack? It was a granola bar yes it was peanuts in it but my teeth were fine until I went to the dentist. The same tooth that dentist specifically said looks from good from the X-Ray just happens to be the area where the extra attention was needed. If there was a hairline fracture shouldn't they have seen that? Not only is it broke but hurting. Needless to say that they won't get another cent to me and I expect that $100 to go back on my credit card. read more

Literally the worst dental clinic out there. They are only interested in robbing you of your money. They don't deliver the service they claim. At first they are all about taking care of you, but once the bill is paid in full they treat you like trash. I wouldn't recommend this place to an enemy. Stay away from them. I cannot express how let down I am from the Aspen Dental location. They consistently cannot keep appointments and they have asked to reschedule every single appointment I have had. I have even shown up to a confirmed appointment and the receptionist did not even have me coming in that day. I understand rescheduling happens and I am fine with that. But this is absurd when it is 100% of the time. The concerning thing is I have text messages specifically confirming my time and date only for someone to call on the same day trying to tell me that my appointment was for a different time. This is an untechnical business practice. If an appointment cannot be kept then just say your short staffed or there was a mistake instead coming up with some story. Don't make your customers believe they are to blame. While sitting in their office waiting for your appointment you can clearly overhear their receptionist calling clients asking them to reschedule so I know its not just me. This is a management problem and not an Aspen front line staff problem. If you manage to make it thru the front door and your actually get see a dentist at your scheduled time are pretty nice and easy to work with. read more

Called to inquire about cash prices for a filling replace/ repair. Thiguth the price was reasonable and made an appointment. then was informed that I needed a new patient exam first, and that there was an additional fee. I told the call center to cancel my appointment and they replied that they had a new patient free exam that they would apply to my appointment. I agreed. Took off work, drove 1/2 and hour today only to be informed that there was a $92 fee for the first visit. When I stated I was suppose to have the first visit free as I was doing a follow up repair, the desk person told me there was no such program, and that the fee was $92. I cancelled my appointment, having wasted 1-1/2 hours of my day on a lie. My question are: Do the call center people have incentives for booking appointments that encourages them to lie? Does the right hand know what the left hand is doing? Does the site have the ability to ignore arrangements made through their call center? NOT worth your time or effort. read more

PLEASE ... PLEASE, stay away from this place and save your budget... one of the rip-off places that I've ever visited, I went to this clinic when I had a serious pain in one of my teeth that I couldn't take it anymore, they did their checking and told me your tooth need (re-do) root canal and crown. In addition I had to do simple filling for one of the front teeth which is not a big deal as the major problem that I had that day which is has to be done by a specialist and they showed me the breakdown of all the numbers after contacted my insurance and got the numbers, and they told me here is what are you responsible for (over $1300), it was kinda too much for me for the root canal and crown but I had no other options cause I was in real pain and wanted to get rid of the problem asap. after 3 months they sent me another bill and it is over $1300 and they said this is the amount that you need to pay too (in addition of the first amount that I already paid before), because your insurance didn't pay it cause you maxed out your limit, I told them no, the amount you showed me in the beginning was based on the insurance response so how in the world that I get an (updated amount) after 3 months and it's about the double of the what I should've been paid, if they would've given me the right amount (over $2600) I would definitely walk out the door cause I'm not going to pay this amount for one tooth, but I think something wrong was going on their side from beginning and they didn't give me the right amount. The right amount is something really important for the customers to know about so they can be aware of what kind of numbers they are about to pay which is something I usually get every time I visit any clinic, I complained about that twice and they didn't even bother themselves and try to give me any solutions, I called their HQ in NY and they promised me as well to give me call back, guess what ... nothing. cause money is all they care about, they don't care about building a good reputation for the company, they don't care about keeping the customers with them as a loyal customers because loyalty comes from the confident and trust of the customers to their clinic which is gone once they showed me how stupid was I when they gave me a bill in the beginning and then they sent me another bill which they stated as another amount that I need to pay. read more

Don't walk, Run from this place. On May 2nd, 2019 Dr. Guthrie was to extract 23 teeth, smooth the bone and provide me with temporary dentures. He left 7 root tips, half of a tooth, and didn't smooth the bone at all. The giant temp dentures wouldn't fit into my mouth. I returned May 28th to have Dr. Ramirez cut open all 4 quadrants to smooth the bone and remove the remaining tooth. Still had sharp points all over my mouth and had to find a new dentist for a 3rd surgery to fix their mess (another $9k). I paid them in advance for the surgery and they are telling me I still owe them $2,374.66 for their inept surgery and dentures they never provided. read more

I have had several pieces of both major and routine work done at Aspen in Bloomingdale. The people are amazingly kind and friendly. Let me say that Dr. Ramirez is incredible. But, their staff has very little practical experience and I know that they pay well under the typical salaries. They are great that they offer young grads an opportunity to learn, practice and grow their careers but be warned that this is often at the expense of the patients. There were so many problems with billing, appointments and delays in getting crowns and bridges that actually fit that I was getting beyond impatient and moving into anger. I had a bridge actually break in half after 7 months because they insisted on selling me a zirconia bridge rather than a metal with enamel type. And, the zirconia cost an extra $300 that my insurance did not cover. I argued that I did not opt for that and they finally credited the up charge on my account. After getting a couple of very painful "scans" from very nice but totally inexperienced techs and being billed for one (a cancer scan) that were, again, not covered by my insurance I finally decided that I needed to go elsewhere. However, I didn't want to cut ties with Aspen until I resolved the mysterious $701 bill from 18 months prior that I was never billed for in the past and that was already covered by my insurance at a negotiated patient co-pay of $31. It took several months and many calls to both Aspen and my insurance carrier and the insurance twice sending them the statement of coverage for that bill before it suddenly turned into a bill for $31. Also, when they told me that they wouldn't perform the new crown work until I paid the $701. I tried to put it on the new Care Credit (Synchrony Bank) card that provided 12-18 months no interest (which they had me sign up for) I was told it could not accommodate charges that were over 18 months old. I had to pay the entire bill out of my own pocket. Enough! Done! The people are wonderfully kind, friendly and caring but the Aspen business model is exactly that - BUSINESS.
