Service was friendly and efficient, offering good recommendations. They were attentive, asking if we would like a break between courses. Our orders turned up promptly. The restaurant space is large and has managed to keep an intimate feel with the clever use of glass screens. We were able to enjoy a meal for two undisturbed by a family celebrating an 18th 20 ft away. The menu has everything you would expect of an Indian restaurant, and many new dishes we had not tried before. We took advantage of the Friday night meal deal, that covers 80% of the menu and was excellent value. This place is a gem, and we will definitely be going back.

The decor is great and they spent millions of pounds designing it, so you will certainly be in awe of the place. However the food is not so grand. It is by no means bad but come on!!!!! This is Manchester and as fellow yelpers would testify there is a massive choice for diners and to be honest when it comes to food alone this place falls short of a few places I can think of. As I said the food is ok, and the place is well worth checking out once, but will you return there on a regular basis?? I think not. Oh, and I have no idea who thought it was a good idea to make this brochure that you can pick up on your way out, but it did make me cringe. Awful design and a blatantly staged picture with a rather lairy looking Ryan Giggs with an accompanying caption which read "regular customers" made me just think "school boy error!!!!!!!!" So perhaps its not so much the place, which is great, nor the food, which is not bad. It's just.... it seems the owner put a lot of time, effort and money into the place and left it for a bunch of monkeys to run... But hey I took me madre here on her birthday and she loved it. The food is always of an excellent standard and the decor is classy and stylish. The prices are about average, and portions are large. The waiters are helpful and efficient - they will guide you through the vast menu. Vegetarians are well catered-for and you will be spoiled for choice. As it is so large, you can usually eat there without booking, but I would recommend phoning first on weekend nights. A definate one to visit - you will not be disappointed.

Imagine a 5' 4 Indian 'Basil Fawlty' with purple streaks in his hair tearing around and serving 6 tables at once then you will picture Shah however he smiles constantly and is nice to the staff. I can forget the occassional double bookings and the order mix ups because it's such fun to eat here and the food is superb. A word of warning book your table as it is very popular and dont expect to rush just enjoy the fantastic experience, then can even cater for parties in the upstairs dining room.

Décor is fairly basic, but pleasant and spacious enough, with around twenty covers. The usual curry café setup prevails with water jugs and glasses already laid out, plus fresh coriander and chilli garnishes. Real Taste's location off the main road means this place is pleasantly quieter, but they seem to be doing enough business - a mix of Asians, Chinese, and local workers, with runners from local building sites arriving to collect some truly massive takeaways! Tandoor chapati is excellent - the tandoor specialist can be seen diligently working away at the back of the semi-open kitchen. One chapati, boiled basmati, channa and a mixed vegetable curry came to £5.50 for a substantial meal. The veg mix was a pleasantly-enough spiced of cauliflower, green beans, peas and sweetcorn but still the weakest part of the meal. The peas and sweetcorn made for an interesting change, but as most likely frozen I would still class them as cost-cutting 'filler' - a plate of all fresh veg would be my preference. I would eat here again, but I'm more looking forward to my next review spot which is the highly-rated Qila Khyber. And as a vegetarian, Anand's in Rusholme and Dosa Xpress in Fallowfield are my current destinations for repeat visits in the curry café category. Bus tip: take an 89 or 135 from outside Urbis, get off when you reach the Spanish redbrick Jewish Museum (other side), and Broughton Street is down on the left. Forget flash modern places with plasma screens, the food comes first and we will now be back time and time again. also they have recently gained a high rating by the food hygiene inspectors and they proudly have printed it off and show it as an advertisement, and why not? good for them. the prices are very good also.

If we want to stay close to home but not skimp on quality, Pavilion is normally our first choice! Pretty run of the mill when it comes to the menu, but they do offer a great set menu and also a set lunch menu for a lighter bite! Now as much as I agree with Ryan that the Pavilion is great, I also have to echo slightly what Adam F said - it used to be better! Whether that is because they have declined it quality or whether its the increased quality available just a hop skip and jump away in either Manchester or Naga at Abbey Village, I'm not sure - but I bet it's the latter. In Bolton, the Pavilion is the best curry house, however as mentioned just a little bit of a drive or a quick train out of town and you're spoilt for choice and as painful as it is for me to admit, the choice is just that bit better.
