After a long day walking around in and outside of Linlithgow castle I needed a nice hot chocolate…read moreand shelter from the cold wind. Coffee Neuk to the left was the first coffee shop I saw and which stood out from all the other coffee shops around the market place. My first thought was that the prices are high and the food about average, because of the closeness to such a famous attraction. My expectations were "luckily" not fulfilled :-) When I entered, there was nobody at the counter and a couple was sitting near the window in the adjoining tea room. The place seemed deserted, but "oh mei" was I wrong, Within minutes the tea room filled up with people enjoying an afternoon chat with friends or tourists just getting in from the castle visit, like me. I had to order at the counter and was informed that the scones were sold old. Next choice was a piece of carrot cake and a mug of Hot Chocolate, which by the way was a Cadbury Hot Chocolate (just to point it out, as they appear to be very proud of the Cadbury logo). I took seat at a small table (1-2 people max, but really cute) and attempted my first bite of the carrot cake. What can I say? It was not dry, no, it was soft and juicy with a layer of cream cheese topping. The menu choices are limited, but what you get has substance. The staff is very nice, the prices very accommodating ( a lasagna for abt £4 ?!?) and the place very clean. I went to the toilet and when coming back my table was cleaned and no trace of me remained. Ah well, and so I continued forth on my journey back home.........

Yet another good coffee shop in the surprisingly small town of Linlithgow. Coffee Neuk is a more…read moretraditional coffee shop. It's a lot cheaper than some of the other cafes such Ebulum (previously reviewed). But this is really where its charm lies. The staff here are really friendly, though for a Linlithgow cafe that doesn't seem unusual. It is a tad small, but they make the most of the space. Unfortunately at lunch though this place gets pretty popular. Expect the usual sorts of hot drinks, as well as some snacks ideal for lunch. I had the soup of the day which cost me £2.40. That's pretty good, or at least average, for Edinburgh prices. But the portions were bigger than normal and it was served with decent bread. I like to think we Scots are proud of our soup but you'd be surprised how many times I'm disappointed by the poor quality soup served around Edinburgh! Coffee Neuk didn't disappoint though.

With a Sunday off together, we thought to take our bikes on the train to Polmont and to cycle along the canal to Linlithgow to visit some friends and their boat. We spotted Bridge 49, which is conveniently located next to the 49th canal bridge, and just had to head on in for some late lunch/early dinner before our visit. There's a pleasant family feel, and a lovely friendly atmosphere. We were given such a genuine warm welcome, and deciding to make the most of the beautiful day, picked a table outside. The menu's just bursting with British classics. I was just craving a real comforting serving of fish and chips and the Bridge 49 didn't disappoint. - Fresh, fluffy haddock with a delightful portion of chips and a serving of peas and coleslaw on the side. Classic bistro grub, and great value for money. Just how could we resist a few slices of chocolate cake to take over to the boat? Oh so moist and gooey, it was a slice of heaven! Four slices of cake were on the costly side but, boy oh boy, worth every penny. It's great that cyclists and boaters alike can stop by for a bite to eat as there's nothing else like this in the vicinity. Bridge 49 is relatively new and I'd say that it's an extremely welcome addition to the canal. - I look forward to my next visit!

The food is good... however unfortuably I found a hair in my food. They were very good about it and didn't change and swapped it for a fresh one. I decided as they had handled it so well I would still go back after all it's a hair. To my horror the on my return visit I had the same problem. The severice was friendly, but unfortunately having hairs in my food twice was to much for me and I am unlikely to be back. My sister has not had the same problems I have and still likes to visit.
