This "hostel" is more like a Bed and Breakfast! It's in a beautiful old Victorian house! The staff is small, but friendly, helpful and accommodating. The hostel is very clean and feels very welcoming. We had a 2 person room, which was located on the first floor, near the front door. Our room was cute and comfortable. We had a shared bathroom with another double room. The bathroom was located between the two rooms, and each bedroom had a private entrance to the bathroom from their room. This was pretty nice, but you do have to remember to lock two doors when you used the restroom. The bathroom was clean, and still felt really private. The location is the best part! It is located just a short walk from the theaters and downtown! It's next door to another popular hotel, but I'd rather stay here. Behind the hostel is a residential area with plenty of unrestricted parking. There's also a nice, clean kitchen for use. I think there was some free bread too, but I may be mistaken as I stayed there last spring. One thing to note though is that many, many students and class trips stay here, so the entire hostel could be filled with youth. read more

This hostel is in a really nice, clean, well kept house. It is pricey for a single, but well located, as it takes only minutes to walk downtown. The linens were clean, but didn't smell like perfumed detergent, which I appreciate. The bed I was given first was so uncomfortable that I couldn't sleep, but I moved to another one that was nice. During my stay, I saw four staff. Two were nice, but I wouldn't call them hospitable, just cordial. However, the other two were not at all friendly, avoided eye contact, and acted very uncomfortable talking to the guests. In a hostel being cordial is fine, but being awkward and unfriendly is just inexcusable. A large part of staying at a hostel is the social experience, which they took away from. There is a no-alcohol policy, which I think is absurd. There are only two common use toilets, which is strange at a hostel. Also, I just found out on the website that there is a recreation room, which wasn't included in my welcome tour. Weird. The website states that: "The Ashland Hostel offers four room styles to suit each type of traveler." It tries to be so many things that it fails to provide a true hostel experience. I wouldn't say I had a bad experience at all, but it wasn't much more than a bed in a nice house, either. A side note for travelers: The area around Ashland has some nice recreation, but the town itself is so dull that on a Saturday night the bars downtown are empty. The culture is this: wealthy self-entitled westerners who take classes so they can learn how to make and sell art, generic college students, and few others. If you want a cool place that also has art and recreation, visit Portland, San Francisco, anywhere but here! read more

Just had a four-night stay here, and loved it. The place is immaculately clean, and feels very homey. The beds were comfortable, and the rooms are air-conditioned (Ashland can get hot in the summer!). Best of all, the hostel is only a short walk to the great downtown restaurants, Lithia Park, and the Shakespeare Festival grounds. I like to come to the Shakespeare Festival every year, and am already planning on staying here again next year. read more

Yes, it's beautiful and homey, with a wonderful kitchen and some of the most courteous staff I have ever met. The location of the hostel is also fantastic if you're visiting for the Shakespeare Festival. Street parking is ample, free, and doesn't have a time limit. For all these things, the Ashland Hostel is a 5-star business. I'm only giving it 3 stars because I had the unpleasant experience of developing these itchy bumps after sleeping in the bed. Don't get me wrong, the place looks very clean and I even thought my linens smelled particularly nice, but after I took a short nap before a performance at night, I found an itchy bump on my side. I thought nothing of it at first (cuz maybe it was a random bug bite, I thought) but then after a night of sleeping on the bed, I had developed 13 more itchy bumps the next morning. They couldn't just be random bug bites anymore because most of the bumps were on the right side of my body, the side that I slept on for most of the night. It was so peculiar because I don't have sensitive skin that normally breaks out like this. I also got woken up by the sound of a lot of cheery commotion downstairs. I checked my phone to see that it was 8am, and at first I thought, "okay, maybe I'm just not a morning person and there are surprisingly a lot of people staying in this house who are very friendly and talkative this early in the morning." When I went downstairs to leave, it turned out that there was some kind of meeting/breakfast mixer going on?!?! (this was the morning of 6/18/10) The place was crowded with what seemed to be non-hostel guests, chatting loudly away with each other. I had a difficult time squeezing past the crowds of people with my luggage to exit through the kitchen door. I understand the desire to host a meeting at a central and pretty place such as the Ashland Hostel, but please make sure that the people at these events are courteous to tired travelers staying at the hostel. read more

We had a lovely stay at the Ashland Hostel! The rooms were impeccable, comfortable and an amazing value. The hostel is about a five minute walk from OSF theaters and downtown Ashland. Our family stayed in a private two-room suite with a shared bath. Linens and towels are provided. The kitchen is clean and well-equipped. The hosts were helpful and very welcoming, making us feel right at home. Ashland Hostel is very popular, so book early if you can. Reservations are done by phone and while this may take a little longer than booking via the web, I appreciated the effort the host took to ask about us, where we were coming from, etc. It's a real jewel and we hope to return often! read more

This is a nice find in a city where accommodations fill up quickly in the summer. Before saying here you do need to understand what the hostel experience is like. Our family of four does, and we really enjoyed our stay. We like this kind of place because our kids have food allergies, and so we find ourselves preparing most of their meals. The communal kitchen here is one of the cleanest I've seen. We had a nice family room on the top floor with its own entrance. The walls and floors are thin in this old house, and your experience here will depend in part on the rest of the clientele. We were fortunate to share the place with a quiet visiting high school drama student group (attending the Shakespeare Festival) that was away when we wanted to use the laundry and cooking/eating facilities, so no competition! Having said that, there was an air conditioner in our room, and we were there during a heat wave, so the gentle drone from the fan would have drowned out casual noise from the adjoining rooms anyway. Staff was nice and easygoing. On our first night we were running late for a play, and the attendant offered to finish cleaning our dinner dishes for us so we could run to the theater! A big plus for this place is its location, only a five minute walk to the theaters. If you're looking to quibble, there are flaws you could find compared to a more expensive Ashland hotel with all the amenities. One shortcoming is the tiny parking lot (though street parking is ample, free and safe). And there's no swimming pool. But this is a town where summer lodging is expensive, and this was one of the best experiences we've had here in several trips to the Festival. read more

This is definitely the cleanest, nicest hostel I've ever visited. The location is super--in the heart of the city/town, walking distance to everything. (Next door is a bed and breakfast that has rates well into $200/night.) The place is really immaculate. Also, I appreciated the fireplace, beautiful dining area, and the 'donation' laundry machines. The owner and staff were friendly and helpful. I loved Ashland, and will book a bed/room at this hostel the next time I travel here. I stayed at the hostel for 3 weeks this fall. I loved it! I stayed in the women's bunk room which has 2 bunk beds, and I only had a roommate 4 nights out of 15. It was more like a BNB, just without the breakfast. Cute house, shared VERY CLEAN kitchen with space for me to put my food in the fridge and on a shelf. Had access to kitchen most of the day. Most other people visiting were going to see Shakepeare plays, which was a 5 minute walk into town. Very convenient location. Clean towels and sheets...clean showers...shoes off policy. The only downside was that the room was facing the road, so there was some road noise, but there wasn't much traffic during the night...my earplugs worked great! (good idea to bring them if you are sharing a room, there was some snoring happening) I will definitely stay here again, I highly recommend it! Thanks Jana and Megan and Kyle! read more

This is an amazing travel bargain and the sweetest spot to spend some time in. I go up to Ashland for a week at a time to see all the shows and this is a fantastic home base. Walking distance to everything in downtown (at the theaters in like 8 minutes), big cozy common area, great kitchen, lots of space, no one kicks you out in the middle of the day, a wide variety of folks coming through--hikers, Shakespeare lovers of all ages and walks of life. I recommend the little Greensprings room. So comfy and peaceful. It's the only place in Ashland charging less than $100 a night and what you get for that is amazing. Jana and her staff are the kindest, most easy-going folks. It is really a delight to stay here. I recommend bringing a pair of slippers as there are no shoes allowed in the house and no bare feet. read more

i can't imagine a hostel being cleaner and more organized than Ashland Hostel. I have stayed there a number of times on my way up and down from Portland to SF. I love the Shakespeare festival and always see one show. 5 minute walk! Sometimes there's lots of students there, other times adults on a budget and world travelers. I have stayed in the dorms before, but i don't' sleep too well--it's just the natural of sleeping w new sounds and you know, strangers. this time, i got the semiprivate room. (right off of the dorm rooms but w it's own lock). this works out excellent for me ($49?) and allowed me to spread out my stuff w out bugging anyone and watch tv on my laptop until 11pm. my Dorm mates where out by 10pm. if you have done the hostel thing, this place is a treat. if you have not, this is a great spot to try out. I feel very safe and comfortable here. read more

The MOST important facts to know about this place are --the owners don't know how to run a business --the beds are incredibly uncomfortable --the basement (which accommodates 9-10 people) smells like mold/mildew and activates allergies for those allergic (and they should tell you this if housing you there) Here are the good and bad in greater detail: GOOD: --There are lots of surface charms. On the surface it's a lovely Craftsman-era old home. Front-room fireplace, nice kitchen that's well equipped, easy to use, and clean. --Bulletin board with local info. --Cute handmade signs explaining rules and care/maintenance. --It appears that every room is equipped with a space heater for the cold cold nights, and it seems it's easy to keep warm with provided sheets and blankets. --I got two pillows on my single bed, and they were nice pillows and allowed for more comfortable sleeping than any other aspect of the stay. --No shoe policy indoors. I like that it makes everything feel cleaner, especially floors on bare feet. BAD: --Like I said, they can't run a business. point 1: Making arrangements for a three-night stay in a double/shared room took about three 20-minute phone calls. Poor communication, no getting to the point. Then the day we were arriving we received a call around 3:30 p.m. from the owners saying THEY needed to do errands in town. When were we coming? Would it be okay if they're NOT THERE for our ~5 p.m. arrival? They've checked in everyone else and are just waiting for us, etc. (Excuse me, but last I checked when you're running this kind of establishment, checking in should be allowed at all hours, but most typically expected between 4 and 7 p.m.) It was really uncomfortable and we felt forced into making a different decision (kill time elsewhere first). I think two more calls resulted after that, but because our phone was also our navigation and communication that takes 2 minutes between most people and 10 minutes with them, we ended up MISSING Ashland and driving 10 miles past it because we were too busy on the phone. It took us a while to figure this out because we never saw the exit and couldn't figure out why navigation wanted us to turn around. Another guest told us she got the same call and they were rude to her. We didn't feel they were rude to us, but it was annoying to have to talk so much. And be told there's no way to check in at around the very reasonable FIVE PM. I mean, what kind of business are you running? point 2: There are lots of rules and lots of information and in spite of lots of talking it wasn't disseminated well. For instance, my roommate wasn't given the keycode to get in the house, so it's a good thing we came home together. Also, I wasn't shown the rules list that apparently bans alcohol from the house, so it was quite embarrassing to buy wine and be told by another guest I can't have it while putting it in the fridge. point 3: THEY CAME INTO OUR ROOM while we were sleeping!! It was VERY annoying to have such horrible sleep (see below) and feel no restoration and be awakened because we swapped one space heater for another and they literally barged in, no knocking, to swap the space heaters back. ???!!! --World's most uncomfortable beds. My roommate and I had singles on creaky wooden frames. The mattress was crazy-soft, and I sank into a center sinkhole. It was hard to be comfortable. Both beds creaked loudly as we tossed and turned, so it becomes very noisy. My joints ached and my sleep was uncomfortable and unrestorative. I tried my friend's bed in her single and though it was better, it was still much too soft and bad on the joints. --Dank, musty basement that smells terrible. (This is where our rooms were located.) --Janky and cheap renovation work. Laminate floors and industrial carpets. Poorly cut base and quarter round, poor caulking, just generally janky work that looks like Uncle Hobbyist did it and not a professional. Everything very cheap--old/cheap sheets, mattresses, and pillows, plastic shower enclosures, plastic base in bathroom, cheap vinyl. I know it's not the Four Seasons and that's cool, but I think historic houses deserve better pride of ownership and better maintenance. They could even charge more for rooms if everything didn't feel so cheap. Walking on the sad laminate floors made me wonder where the wood went. Because the entire point of being in Ashland was a dance event that required a lot of physical movement and late nights, it was very disappointing to be here. Because I lacked the necessary rest, I lacked full participation in my paid event. I would not return, and we are owed an apology for the walk-in incident. read more

EXTREMELEY RUDE!!! INHUMANE!!!! I need to contact the manager of this god forsaken institution that claims to be a hospitable hostel in gorgeous Ashland, Oregon. I made reservations here in the morning and drove all the way from San Francisco (where I had a free place to stay but insisted on heading north) to Ashland and rolled in to the hostel at 8:30 pm. What does the prick at the counter do? The minute we walk in the door he rolls his eyes and lets out a puff of exasperation. Then he looks up our reservation, so far so good, then he asks for our identification. Well silly me I didn't have anything other than my bank card with me so he turns us away. I look at him in total disbelief, and I feel all the blood draining out of my face... my eyes swell with tears and I pace around the room to avoid fainting... horrified at where we will spend the night...out in the mountains in the hail storm? On the side of I 5 in the car? Under a bridge? At an overpriced motel? Well, jerkbrain at the front desk doesn't care, he actually recommends we "head outside of town... Ashland is a very touristy town so you may want to head north to Medford where it is less touristy..." Honestly the biggest piece of dirty toilet paper I have ever encountered. Never again will I trust the Assland Hostel. read more

I had the exact same experience as Jamie B, below. I have stayed here in the past on several occasions, and really liked it. I also lived in Ashland for a time, and stayed there for a week straight while looking for an apartment. The positives: It is in a great location and was clean and well set up when I was last there. HOWEVER, things seem to have changed since then. When I tried booking a space in the dorm this time, the website said all reservations needed to be made by phone with payment taken at the time of booking. Great. However, they are impossible to reach. According to their website: "Sorry, reservations are not currently available online or via e-mail, unless you are contacting us from outside the U.S. The best times to call for reservations are between 11am - 6pm." Only they are rarely there at those times, so you end up playing phone tag without being able to reserve a room. When I finally DID get through to the woman who must now be the manager/host [note, this was May 2017 as I just saw that my review was never posted] she was terse and unhelpful. No, worse than terse. She was bordering on rude. She said she could not accomodate my reservation request because it was too inconvenient. Hmmmm..... Again, for the record let me state that in the past the couple who were the managers/hosts were very easy and helpful, made me feel welcome, and didn't find my wanting to stay there "inconvenient". Obviously the current host is in the wrong line of work. read more

We were driving from Yosemite to Portland and after multiple phone tag attempts (no online booking) we were told they could not accommodate an 8pm check-in time. Apparently they only make exceptions if traveling internationally. Too bad, would have liked to stay there. Was told it would be unlikely they could accommodate us if we were arriving after 6pm due to the fact that he receptionist (owner?) had to wake up for her second job at 4am. In 2012 my boyfriend had arrived after 11pm with no problems and highly recommended this hostel. Rated 1 star due to poor business professionalism and poor customer service. read more

This is a beautiful hostel. After staying in many hostels around the world, I only have good things to say about Ashland hostel. It's like home away from home. Jefferey, the manager, provides linens and towels, so you can leave all that stuff out of your suitcase. The hostel has clean well lit common spaces and there's no scent of smoke in any of the rooms. There's free internet access and a phone available at any time of the day or night. There are a few spaces in the back of the building, street parking in convenient and safe. The kitchen has ample storage space and fridge space. What can I say? Why stay anywhere else? read more

This place was so great! It's one and a half blocks from the Shakespeare Festival and it is the best deal in town. The rates are soooo good and the beds are very comfortable. They are family and senior friendly. We got a private little room right off of a 6 bed dorm. The care-takers were a hoot and dedicated to the max. They have a nice kitchen, full dining room, internet access, living room, and basement den with a huge TV. I can't wait to go there again. It had a for sale by owner sign out front. I sure hope things don't change too much. There's no way they would be able to keep the prices so low if they do a lot of renovation. read more

I love this hostel. The front porch has a wonderful swing, it's quiet at night and so peaceful. Close to downtown and the Shakespeare festival. It has clean, comfortable beds, bath, kitchen and common room. It could use updating, but instead of the 190. A night b&b across the street I prefer the cost savings to take in the plays, town, restaurants and area. The hosts are friendly and knowledgable. Play tickets can be had most times in front of the theater right before, for half price. read more

I live in the bay area California and drove up to Washington state for a retreat, stopping here on my way north. I usually stay at Hostelling International hostels so staying at a locally managed hostel was new for me. They accommodated me very warmly and were available for me to arrive late at night! I had to call and update them multiple times on my drive about where I was as it got later into the night, but they were right there by the phones each time I called. I stayed in the dorm style bunk and woke up to wonderful snowfall. The ladies answered my questions about where the post office was, where a good grocery store was (the local Co-op was fantastic! Very impressive), etc. On my way back to the bay area driving south I ended up changing my route (originally planning to drive through Bend on my way home). I called them the same day and was able to book the same bunk that night, with another late arrival. I had a really lovely stay, the home was warm and cozy, the bathrooms very clean, had a nice chat with other guests at dinner. It was the most ideal space for me to have some quiet personal space before heading home, and if I hadn't had to rush home to return to work, I would have stayed for a few days enjoying the vibe and town. I normally camp when I'm in Ashland (campground north on 99) in the summer, but I wanted a roof over my head on my first and only trip so far to Oregon in October. The hostel is in a terrific location. It's in easy walking distance to the theaters, and to the always fabulous Ashland Food Coop. There is a 3-4 (5?) car parking lot under a big beautiful oak tree in the back of the house, and on-street parking across the main drag. As someone mentioned below, the style is maybe more like a BnB, meaning, the owners live there in their own set of rooms, and run the place as a hostel business. It's just two people running the entire place, with some cleaning help. It strikes the right balance between being institutionally efficient (e.g., the kitchen is the best organized and run kitchen that I've ever seen in a small hostel) and charming in its Craftsman style, with friendly-and-arty labels about where to find towels, and what to watch out for re old-house-quirky plumbing issues. I very much appreciated that they have baskets of handtowels and facecloths (which are basically tiny towels) to use for hand drying in the bathrooms instead of creating more waste by using paper towels. There are cloth napkins in the dining room, and well labeled recycling sorting bins in the kitchen. I live in the Pacific Rim also, where it's a common custom to take off shoes when entering a house. There are chairs near the bookcases for shoes to make putting the on/off easy. Backpackers muddy boots were safe on the big covered porch. I don't recall if bringing slippers or house shoes was suggested when I made my reservations. It's nice to have a heads-up about that when going to a no-shoes-in-the-house place, for those of us who have feet issues. Luckily, I had slippers and flip-flops with me anyway. In response to the person below who was tweaked about receiving a phone call asking about his/her arrival time so the hostel owners could leave the house to go run errands -- really? They called you to let you know what was going on, and ask your arrival time, and you are indignant because you think someone should be there every minute of every day to cater to you? I'm on board with them being able to shop or do whatever other errands all of us do, and leave the house behind when they go. It isn't a hotel. This is their home, as well as a hostel. It is to their credit that they are strict about not giving you the password to the house over the phone. Also, they change the password on the punch-lock regularly, for the protection and security of every person staying at the hostel. I'm a homeowner, and I understand the havoc one houseguest can cause at my old house with my house's quirky plumbing -- can you imagine having scores of houseguests, constantly? It's not exactly the situation, but if you can imagine that, you can see what a great job the owners are doing. I referred my best friend and her two sisters to the hostel the month before I was there, and they reported back that they loved it. The sisters were together in one room or area on their two stays there. My friend had always been resistant to the idea of hostels ("I did it when I was in college! I don't want to do it now!") but she came back saying, "Okay, if they are all this nice, I'll consider traveling with you and staying at hostels the way you do." Highly recommended for the location, safety and cleanliness, open and up front hosts, and price. Also? I'm getting together over the year end holidays with another guest who was there at the same time, who is now a friend. That's the best thing about hostels! read more

This is our second time at the Hostel and we love it. It even got better since last year, cleaner..no more smelly feet! The staff is very nice and so helpful.
