I've been living in SD for almost 13 years and I've tried a 3-4 different stylists in the area, but with naturally wavy hair as an Asian, many hair stylists have not been able to cut my hair very well. In addition, I love letting my stylist do their magic b/c I am a loyalist, and when it comes to color/highlights, I want to allow them to paint the canvas b/c they know what's on trend and they are the experts. I was spoiled b/c when I lived in the Seattle area, I had a gem of a stylist, and b/c I struggled finding the right person in SD, I continued to see her up until last year, when I was fortunate to meet Siobhain. She's newer to Ashen Salon, but I've followed her here and for sure, this is the right spot! The salon is bright and has a great energy! The receptionist is inviting, and the stylists all seem happy! They have some complimentary beverages while you're getting your service, along with some nice seating and magazines/books. One of the biggest challenges with finding the right stylist is my hair grows very fast and has a natural wave. It varies based on humidity, as girls with wavy/curly hair know, so I've had previous cuts where people razor my hair or however they cut it, it always makes me have major triangle head (not a good look)! Siobhain tends to cut my hair dry, which was an adjustment, but overall it's allowed her to see how the hair will lay when it's dry and follow the natural wave. I've also gotten color and highlights done, which is my fave with Siobhain! She always keeps me fresh and on point, and I always get compliments on my hair after I see her! Besides her skills, she's just a gem and always vibrant and on her game! In my short time seeing her, my mom and my other friend have both had pixie cuts from Siobhain, which according to my friend, also requires major skill to meet the person's preferences, and they've both been happy! Street parking is usually decent, although summer months likely will be busier. I'm not aware of any associated parking, but I've never had any issues finding parking. Appointments are definitely recommended. Pricing is along the standard I think I've seen with most salons, with most cuts ranging around $40-80 based on length/style, and color/highlights ranging from $100-250 depending on what you get done. So happy I found Siobhain and have a great stylist in the SD area now! I definitely recommend that you see Siobhain at Ashen Salon. read more

Every single hairstyle--mine included--was absolutely flawless and held up perfectly from start to finish. Stylist Nicole's (Nicole Elizabeth/ Amora Beauty Co) Ashen profile advertises her belief in "building relationships with my bridal clients well before the big day, ensuring we have clear communication about your vision and addressing any questions you might have along the way." Ashen's Yelp page shows Nicole's work on the bridal section - her work is beautiful if you get to actually work with her on your event day, but myself and at least one other bride had a different experience. Before my wedding, the trial went well although she was wishy washy setting up the date/time (I was coming from out of town and tried to set a date/time months in advance - didn't settle on the time until the week or so before and even day-of, she suggested a time change but accommodated our agreed upon time). Nicole was unable to be present for my wedding day hair and makeup due to a family emergency and I do understand why she could not be there. However, the artist she sent in her place was 30 min late for a bride-only appointment (no wiggle room to make up lost time), would not accept feedback (she kept telling me that I DID look dewy despite being covered in powder among with other issues which I shared with Nicole in detail). This stand-in artist did not bring appropriate products based on my trial makeup (ie dewy liquid vs matte powder foundation, subtle individual lashes vs glam wispies). This tells me either Nicole didn't discuss product and style notes from my hair and makeup trial with this person, OR she sent someone on her behalf who did not care to try and recreate the look I wanted -- either way, not what you want from your wedding hair and makeup team. My makeup was so vastly different from what I wanted that I just removed and did it myself, though we were already behind schedule with her being late. I was holding back tears from about 15 minutes into the appointment until I was able to privately redo my whole face before first look. I also made minor adjustments to hair shape but I feel like that's pretty normal, just individual preference. I reached out to Nicole a month after the wedding to relay my experience in detail. After apologizing and suggesting a phone call, stopped responding for months- until I reached out on a public platform where she'd continued to post throughout my attempts to connect. During this period without communication from her, I reached out a few times on days that she'd made social media posts marketing her business - I assumed she would be attending to existing clients, not just future ones. After commenting on a post (didn't comment anything specific, just a "hope to hear back soon" from an existing client), I still received no direct communication. Then suddenly her page shows up as "no longer exists" for a few days, though it was still visible to friends of mine ( my comment was no longer visible). When her account reappeared for me, the post I'd commented on was gone. She denied ever blocking me, so who really knows what happened. I've been shopping around trying different salons (hairdressers) and wasn't having much luck w the results. this salon offered a free consultation so I gave it a shot. my consultation was with Ashley, she was very informative and we discussed what I was looking for and what would be best for my hair. My hair is fuzzy even with a flat iron (it helps but ) so she recommended a keratin treatment a few weeks after getting the highlights. She did a fantastic job toning down my brassiness & added in some depth. she trimmed it up w a few layers and my hair looks awesome. The color is perfect. A five star for good stylists. But three stars (or less) for cost. A wash, hair cut and blow dry for "normal" hair is $125 that takes less than 40 min. The month before I was charged $90. Ouch! make up was over $200. So this time I went to another stylist in La Jolla (she is independent and works for herself) and the exact same cut was $65. BTW Sephora in MV has 1 hr sessions for make up for free. read more

The location and layout of the salon is perfect! I have fibromyalgia, so it can be rather difficult for me to get a deep clean when it comes to washing my own hair. I have very thick hair and holding my arms up for long periods of time is difficult. I called over to the salon to see if I could Pay a member of their team to do a deep wash and nothing else. Marc was fantastic! It's hard to find a stylist with the passion and enthusiasm he has for hair, and I knew as soon as he sat me down for my consult. He blessed me with a perfect 80's shag-mullet a la Meryl Streep in Silkwood. I learned quickly that any time he suggests something: trust--he's right. He was amazing at trimming down the cut to work with my face shape--even with the shape of the back of my head. As a first-time client, it's rare to feel enough trust to really relax, but by the time I was in the shampoo chair getting a scalp massage, I was beyond relaxed.
