Definitely walked out of Koda with a ear to ear grin! Having contemplated coloring my hair for quite a while, I was not sure I was brave enough to go forth with it so when I called in to book an appointment, they told me Rachel who had an opening over the weekend could do a cut and color consultation and maybe fit me in for a balayage. I definitely appreciated the call to confirm my appointment the day before. Rachel was really patient in listening to what I wanted and took time to see the pictures I brought her and offer sound advice on what would suit my needs. And I really liked that she actually listened to me when I said I wanted to keep my length unlike many other stylists who happily chop off a good 3-4 inches. I felt so comfortable with Rachel that I decided the proceed with the balayage and felt thrilled with the results. As someone who had never colored her hair before, she gave me a very natural blended look! Towards the end she had to attend to another client as I was not scheduled to do a balayage originally so Annie helped out. She was very easy to talk to and helped set my hair with some great waves! This review is for Heather. Wow. What a great stylist. I cheated on my regular girl of 10 years cause I was "this" close to going to CVS and buying a do it yourself "frost n Tip" I thought twice, and looked on Yelp for a nearby salon. I called and Heather had a cancellation and I was booked with her. AWESOME COLOR. She knew exactly what kind of blonde I wanted. She understood my lame way of explaining how I wanted my bangs to be long and cut off mat my cheeks. She was really easy to talk to, and better yet she zipped through my full head of highlights in 1/2 the time my other girl takes. It was so awesome to see the color at the end. It is natural looking. ( no stripes ) and she has me almost convinced to get extensions after Xmas..... Thank you so much. I will def. will be coming back! read more

Annie was awesome! She was extremely friendly, talented and patient with my ridiculous amount of hair. She happily made it so I have minimal maintenance/upkeep! Reasonably priced. KODA salon was such a relaxing experience! Had the pleasure to meeting Annie, super bubbly and knew exactly what color I wanted. Honestly, I been roaming around to find a hairstylist that understood what I wanted. She got it on point, was in the salon for less than 3 hours and had great customer service. Plus very clean and spacious! HIGHLY RECOMMENDED. read more

Amazing haircut by Alicia!! She listened to what I wanted my hair to look like and then clearly explained how layers and focusing on weight distribution is what was needed. I've had layers before but never as well done as this. What a huge difference - best cut ever! She also gave me great tips on color, dealing with dry ends, etc. The salon itself has a great atmosphere too. Highly recommend! read more

Very cute Salon. It is located on the second floor. I came in and got my hair curled by Alex and it ended up super cute! I got a ton of complements that day. My sister got two braids into a little buns and it ended up super cute! The lady who did who hair had short blond hair. Her hair was awesome it was like shaved on the sides with textured top. I ended up also getting a braid and the lady was so nice and she gave me this giant awesome braid. It was so pretty. Shout outs to her cause I told her to be creative. read more

AMAZEBALLS. need I say more? I have been going to Jessica for exactly a year and have had the most positive - best looking hair - color achieved - healthy - AMAZING- experience yet! I have been coloring my hair for 9 years now and lets just say.. I don't let just anyone touch my hair. I am super persnickety when it comes to my hair. I have had my fair share of horrible stylist and amazing top notch stylist but Jessica nails my desires every time. (it's always a new surprise-- so thank you Jessica for always dealing with my indecisiveness) When I first met Jessica she was super sweet and just by our first consultation I knew I was in good hands just by how educated she was. I was in the process of returning back to my blonde hair from being super brunette & it was EXTREMELY uneven. I had brown on the bottom and bleach on the top it was HORRIBLE! Jessica managed to take all of my miseries away by putting a settle high light and low light into my hair. I absolutely fell in love and it was a humungous make over. I knew from then on out Jessica was destined to be my hair stylist forever & EVER! She brought wonders to my hair! Now I just get blonde balyage highlights that I am in love with. We achieved a settle honey natural blonde with a little bit of platinum and my growth is never bad! My haircuts are always impeccable as well. Although I'm super simple... (Always asking for trims and long layers because I want to grow out my hair) ... Jessica nails a perfect hair-do every time! She never cuts off more then desired too. (WHICH is super rare to find nowadays!!) My hair has grown over 4-5 inches in one year. This girl definitely knows what she is doing! Jessica is extremely talented at what she does, hair gifted from the hair gods, and 100% hair educated. Something I also LOVE about Koda is that they are always continuing with their hair education. Always keeping up with the new hair trends and teaching each other innovative ways of coloring, cutting, blowdrying, etc! The atmosphere is overall relaxing and soothing. (Not a million blowdryers going off kinda thing--- which I LOVE) Parking is super simple! Jessica is a savior, an artist, a savior, and a SAVIOR! One day after waking up and coloring my caramel highlighted hair the ugliest of burgundy red at home with the help of my boyfriend (I don't know what I was thinking) I panicked and called Jessica. Ashamed of what I had done to Jessica's once-beautiful beautiful work, I went in for a color correction with her and after two appointments and learning valuable life lessons (never color my own hair), she was able to bring me back to a beautiful, warm chestnut brown all while maintaining the integrity of my hair. After a few months of letting my hair rest, I just went back in to add some balayage highlights for spring. I have never loved my hair color more!!! This salon is amazing for many reasons but one HUGE reason is Jaslyn. She has been doing my hair for a few years now and I recommend her to everyone I know. I have very short hair and am very picky on how it is cut. Have you ever walked into a salon and just felt at home? Well that's the experience you get at KODA. The decor is gorgeous and the staff is amazing. Cheng, Jaylin and Franco are all very talented and professional. They will never try to up sell you into services or products that you don't need like other salons that I have been too. I showed Cheng a few pictures of cuts/colors that I wanted and she told me how much maintenance each style required. I decided to go with the ombre look that is ever so popular now. She gave me the color/style I wanted with the least amount of maintenance. Not to be a hair snob but my ombre looks amazing. I know that a lot of people are offering ombre color, however their ombre is not natural and it looks like a bad streak job. Which means more maintenance. I guess what I'm saying is that if you want to come to a great salon with the most amazing hair stylists in town come to KODA. You will not be disappointed. read more

I have dark brown hair, and had never gotten it colored before. I wanted to try a big change and I'm so glad I was recommended to see Kirsten at Koda! She was super friendly and made sure that I was comfortable all along the way. She really listened to what I wanted, and she also helped by advising me as to what would look the most flattering for my skin tone/face shape/etc. I LOVED the outcome! I wanted a natural look, so we decided to balayage my hair. It really did look natural and my maintenance (a major concern of mine) has been amazing! I was super happy with my experience with Rachel! My husband set up an appointment to get my hair done as a surprise present. I walked in not knowing anything about the place except what I read on yelp and trusting that my husband communicated what I wanted done. I usually get balayage, but of course he told her all over color and partial highlights. He also didn't tell her my hair is very long But good thing Rachel is flexible, works quickly, and does a great job! Usually I'm at a salon for upwards of 4 hours in order to get the result I like, but she had me out in a little over 2. She gave me tips on how to keep my blonde parts toned and the ends nice and hydrated. It's now been a few weeks, and my hair has never looked so good! Came across all of the great reviews for KODA on Yelp. Decided to call and make an appointment for a cut and a balayage. As another reviewer stated, they do ask you for a credit card when making an appointment. I took pictures with me to my appointment. I was specific about the things I wanted and didn't want. I was really specific about avoiding brassy hair color. Made it clear that was something I wanted to avoid. Stylist said she understood and would avoid the brassy tones. If I had just gotten my hair cut, I would have been pleased with the outcome. The cut was nice. I have a huge issue with the color. The salon is very dim. When the work was done, the color in my hair looked more of a golden color. That's what I had been wanting. I paid and caught a short Lyft ride back to my office. Headed to the bathroom to get a better look. Wow, my hair was not golden at all. There were a lot of brassy tones in my hair. As I went through the layers, some of it looked like untoned brassy color. The very bottom layers of my hair, where the work was started, had bleach on them the longest. They were lighter in color than the top layer of my hair. The top layer of my hair definitely had brassy tones. Some of the strands looked copper in color. This was also supposed to be a balayage and my hair looked streaky. It looked like a bad case of highlights vs balayage. I also thought the color went too fair up my scalp compared to the pictures I showed the stylist. I hated it. I tried not to freak out and decided to give it a week. I used a purple shampoo to see if that would help. Nothing. Purple shampoo isn't going to help hair that hasn't been lightened enough. My hair looks brassy because it is. It wasn't lightened enough. Whatever toner was used didn't do much to help either. I don't know how you can look me in the face and tell me you avoided brassy tones when my hair looks like this. I didn't call KODA to see if I could get this fixed. I spent $260 to get the cut and color. I absolutely should have called them but I didn't. I spent another 3 hours and $300 to get this mess fixed. Such a HUGE difference. Never again. read more

Cute & classy salon located on the upper floor above Banana Republic on Girard Ave. Rachel is the sweetest & does amazing haircuts! I have long hair & she knows how to cut & blend the layers to compliment me very well. She's also does the best beach waves after! Great service from the time they call to remind you of your upcoming appointment to when you're greeted as you step into the salon & leave! I highly recommend Rachel at Koda. I have been coming to see Jessica to keep my hair healthy and update the color as time goes on for several months now. I am always left with confidence that she will never overprocess my hair and that she knows what she's doing. More than that, Jessica makes the effort to schedule me late to accommodate my work schedule, which means a lot! I think most women can relate to the struggle of finding that perfect hair stylist and the horrific stories that come with the search. After many disastrous cuts from Edward Scissorhands and expensive colors that my mother didn't even notice, I'm happy to say my search is finally over now that I have found Cheng. I regularly get a balayage and cut from her and couldn't be happier with my hair! I have dark dark dark brown/black hair and wanted an ashy light brown/blonde balayage that would grow out looking natural between appointments and not turn orange or make me look like an AzN Bb GurL, you know nothing too crazy or demanding. Cheng made it happen. I really appreciated that she was upfront and honest that black to blonde is a process and about how light I can expect my hair to get in one session without compromising the health of my hair. I am very very picky about my hair (if you couldn't tell by now) and was never 100% satisfied with any haircut, sometimes even leaving in tears. Now I confidently jump in her chair (complimentary wine in hand) and let her do her thing. If you ask for a trim and to keep the length, she will actually do just that and NOT cut off 4 inches like a lot of stylists do. Needless to say, I will definitely be back and would recommend her and Koda Salon to anyone. Thank you Cheng for always making my hair look amazing! read more

Let me start off by saying I'm black w/ very thick hair & I usually see someone w/ the same ethnicity when I'm getting my hair done. With that said, I LOVE what Cheng & her team did with my hair. I went in for a Keratin treatment to make my naturally curly hair more manageable without putting another perm in my hair. It took me 4 years to grow my hair & perm out so I wasn't trying to go backwards. I was greeted by Andie who was super friendly & likeable. She got started on me right away & washed my hair. The separate room for washing is genius. I loved the privacy & immediately felt more comfortable. After my hair was washed, Cheng worked her magic on my mane. I felt like a million bucks after she was done. I was very happy about filling out a client card w/ Koda as I know I will be back. I also think its genius that they keep a client card to stay up to date on their clients hair. The salon is located in the heart of La Jolla which is absolutely beautiful but very busy on the weekends. I recommend showing up early to find parking. Without a doubt I will be back. I greatly appreciated all the attention & care put into my hair. I received tons of compliments & after just having a baby these compliments (that I'm still receiving btw) really make my day, week, hell my month! I have visited KODA a few times since moving to San Diego, and I have always liked their work. However, as a college student, $75 for a haircut can be a bit steep! Recently I went in for a cut and a balayage and I COULDN'T be happier with the service. I have very naturally dark hair and I want to go blonde eventually. I figured a balayage would be the way to go so I wouldn't have to deal with as much nasty grow out and constant touch ups. Rachel did wonders for my hair. She was able to lighten it quite a bit without damaging my hair, and I have received so many compliments!! My hair is so healthy and even after going to various concerts and festivals my hair has kept its dignity, when it used to always turn into a bird's nest by the end. I definitely plan to return to KODA, Rachel specifically, for the remainder of my lightening process as I make the journey from brunette to blonde :) read more

Mommy makeover to the max! Cheng took my 3 inches of overgrown roots/grays and shoulder length of some sort of dooky brown dye job and ombred it a beautiful color. I walked around with a bun on my head to cover it all up for months and months. Now, I walk a little taller and prouder! She put my hair salon anxiety to sleep with her confident reassurance, a warm neck wrap (like buttah yo) and a cold ass beer in my hand. I felt like a queen. I'll be back for more pampering soon... You're gorgeous little zen salon is a gem! After you get beautified, go walk to the water and take a deep breath. You'll feel like a new person and billion bucks! Love you Cheng!!! This review is for Heather. Man, she did an absolutely wonderful job. I came in with my long untamed mane that had a bunch of split ends, told Heather exactly what I wanted, and came out feeling fabulous. First she gave me a fabulous head massage. Then she took me to the chair to cut my hair. She listened to exactly what I wanted and pretty much talked me through the whole process so that I am aware of what is going on. She made my hair have fluidity. Overall I would definitely recommend Heather. She's friendly, and definitely knows how to use those scissors to make your hair feel like art. read more

I wanted to make a first time appointment for both my daughter and my self and was told that without giving out my credit card number over the phone they would not make an appointment! The manager, whom I had asked to speak to, was " busy with a client". Obviously I can't comment on the cut/ coloring, as we needed take our hair and our selves elsewhere. read more

I originally wrote a review for this location a few years ago, when I first met Franco. It doesn't show up here-they changed the page, but what's remained consistent is that there's nothing but exemplary service from Franco. He is especially skilled at creating hair color that looks utterly natural! In the last few years, I've run the spectrum from blonde to auburn, and have been pleasantly surprised the whole way. Im not good with change-but somehow he keeps sending me in even better directions, all while respecting my comfort zone. He is very receptive to my input, and will give me honest answers about why a color or style wouldn't be the most flattering for me. (I was told: "no bangs." He was right) The staff as a whole have been uniformly lovely-plus they've got a lot of great product goodies on hand, and a very nice shampoo room! Anyone who answers the phone is polite and knows how to answer my questions. I barely have time for appointments in general-but I REALLY look forward to mine here. read more

With several years of training & experience from L'Oréal Professionel & Kerastase, KODA founder, Cheng, is as comfortable cutting and coloring as she is transforming stick-straight locks into luscious curls - & vice versa! Cheng is adept at several signature hair services, including balayage, keratin straightening treatments & corrective color cure-alls. In addition to working alongside internationally acclaimed stylists such as Luigi Merenu, Holli Smith, & Odile Gilbert, Cheng is consistently sought out by local beauty icons & for editorial spreads. In addition, I love letting my stylist do their magic b/c I am a loyalist, and when it comes to color/highlights, I want to allow them to paint the canvas b/c they know what's on trend and they are the experts. I was spoiled b/c when I lived in the Seattle area, I had a gem of a stylist, and b/c I struggled finding the right person in SD, I continued to see her up until last year, when I was fortunate to meet Siobhain. She's newer to Ashen Salon, but I've followed her here and for sure, this is the right spot! The salon is bright and has a great energy! The receptionist is inviting, and the stylists all seem happy! They have some complimentary beverages while you're getting your service, along with some nice seating and magazines/books. One of the biggest challenges with finding the right stylist is my hair grows very fast and has a natural wave. It varies based on humidity, as girls with wavy/curly hair know, so I've had previous cuts where people razor my hair or however they cut it, it always makes me have major triangle head (not a good look)! Siobhain tends to cut my hair dry, which was an adjustment, but overall it's allowed her to see how the hair will lay when it's dry and follow the natural wave. I've also gotten color and highlights done, which is my fave with Siobhain! She always keeps me fresh and on point, and I always get compliments on my hair after I see her! Besides her skills, she's just a gem and always vibrant and on her game! In my short time seeing her, my mom and my other friend have both had pixie cuts from Siobhain, which according to my friend, also requires major skill to meet the person's preferences, and they've both been happy! Street parking is usually decent, although summer months likely will be busier. I'm not aware of any associated parking, but I've never had any issues finding parking. Appointments are definitely recommended. Pricing is along the standard I think I've seen with most salons, with most cuts ranging around $40-80 based on length/style, and color/highlights ranging from $100-250 depending on what you get done. So happy I found Siobhain and have a great stylist in the SD area now! I definitely recommend that you see Siobhain at Ashen Salon.

Tons of foot traffic to observe as I enjoy my service. Second, the ambience of this salon cannot be understated. Modern, cool, extremely artistic. You can see the pride in ownership and of the staff by the way they maintain this business. Location and salon aside, the stylists are incredibly talented, thoughtful and artistic. Passion and style seeps through their scissors and brushes. All staff members are professional, kind, and eager to help. I came in for a cut by Hannah, color by Jerrod and keratin tx by Dan. I walked in with extremely difficult hair. My hair is wirey and frizzy; it looks extremely damaged-- as if I put my hair through a lot of damage when in reality, I'm very low maintenance! I came in seeking a haircut and some golden tones to brighten my hair up for summer. Right when I walked in to this salon, I knew I was in the right hands. Jerrod was very attentive to my coloring desires; he took his time answering all of my questions and when assessing my hair. He was extremely knowledgeable about color. In just one session Jerrod was able to bring light into my previously dull hair. The process wasn't overdrawn and was very comfortable. It can be extremely hard to find the right shade of blonde for my olive skin tone but Jerrod did NOT disappoint. The color is perfect and the babylites give my hair dimension, light and much needed change. Next I had my haircut by Hannah. Again, she too was very attentive to my needs. She really took the time to listen to what I was seeking out of this cut. Hannah was able to bring my ideas to life and elevate them to the next level. I have never been able to rock a blunt, short haircut. But Hannah was positive I could. I was soooo surprised. She took the time to add dimension to my hair with layers. When I walk, my hair moves! I am absolutely thrilled with her ability to give me previously unobtainable results. Last, I had a keratin treatment by Dan. He was thorough and detail oriented. He took pride in ensuring every last hair had been treated. In the end my hair was blow dryed and straightened to integrate the keratin into my hair. The keratin Changed my hair texture from coarse to silky smooth! The keratin treatment really tied the cut and color all together. My hair was now manageable and beautiful!! I couldn't stop admiring it in the mirror. Dan checked over my hair cut, color, and keratin treatment and BOOM I was finished. The whole process was seamless from start to finish. I have never been one to care about hair but after this treatment I see my hair as the ultimate accessory. I will be sure to refer Dleux to all my friends and coworkers. I want to address the blatant and disappointing inaccuracies in the salon's response to my review…read more I am extremely disappointed that instead of acknowledging the concerns I raised to improve future client experiences, the business chose to misrepresent what actually occurred during my visit. To be completely clear: my stylist did not consult with me even once about what I wanted my hair to look like. This includes tone - my hair is not even the correct color. The only person I spoke to about my hair goals was the assistant, not the stylist. At one point, I even had to ask the assistant whether I would be getting a root smudge (I've been getting my hair done for 15 years and am familiar with what is typically involved in my services), because again, the stylist did not communicate with me at all about my preferences. The stylist blow-dried a single section of my hair and then did not return. After that first section, the next and last time I saw her was as I was walking out of the salon, while she was actively blow-drying another client's hair. Because of this, there is no possible way she could have done a "final check," assessed breakage, or evaluated the overall condition of my hair as suggested in the response. While the stylist did eventually call to apologize (which is the bare minimum), I did not hear from the salon itself. If they truly cared about hearing/fixing my experience, I would have heard directly from them. I will not be returning to this salon or this stylist. Why would I return to a place where I felt disrespected, rushed, unheard, and where my hair was damaged? I also want to clarify that I have no issue with a stylist working alongside an assistant. In fact, I mentioned in my original review that the assistant was very sweet. My issue is with a stylist who does not communicate with me at all, is dismissive and rude, and is so overbooked that she is barely present for the service I was paying for. I did not include this originally, but the stylist was also extremely rude to the assistant, so much so that I considered stepping in because of how poorly she was speaking to her. Overall, the fact that the owner chose to respond with inaccuracies instead of genuinely addressing the issues raised is very reflective of this business.
