Stopped by Ashby's twice during my family's short stay in Michigan! The first time my husband and I got their strawberry cheesecake ice cream in a cup. Very creamy and delicious! One scoop was enough for us both. The second time my husband and I got their Reese's parfait which was highly recommended by my brother in laws cousin. It was his go-to at Ashby's so we told him we wanted to try it as well. Let me say, it has ALOT of peanut butter. We were tasting it for days after! Honestly it was very good but just had a bit much peanut butter, I'd probably order the parfait with maybe some hot fudge swirled in next time to offset the strong peanut flavor. Service is pretty good! The first time we visited it was only us there so the wait wasn't too long. But the second time was on the weekend and at night so everyone and their mama was there! The line was quite long and the wait was even longer. I could tell other customers were getting frustrated. But we didn't mind it. We just sat down at the tables they had inside and waited for our order to be ready. Just know there could be a long wait if you go on peak times and days! My recommendation: don't drive thirty miles for ice cream and then give a poor review because you had to wait or couldn't use the restroom or there were so many customers that they ran out of waffle cones. The only problem we locals have with Ashby's is that the scoop size is similar to a softball, which takes the poor kid several minutes to dig out of their very cold freezers and takes forever to eat. If you want quick, easy and tasteless there's a TCBY just down the street. read more

The ice cream flavors available make you mouth water just reading them, and there are a Lot which made it difficult to decide. My friend and I stopped in after an event at The Ford House so it was an hour before closing but the employees were attentive while cleaning. The scoops are large o you get you moneys worth, I got a double scoop on sugar cone and it was delicious. I love Spumoni and I get it whenever an option: a good amount of crunchy pistachios, a nice burst of amaretto flavor in between rich chocolate. my other scoop was a Toffee Bourbon kind and just as yummy! We sat inside because: there was no way I could enjoy my cone while diving, my scoops were a wee bit precarious and the gal gave me a cup "just in case" and I didn't notice any outdoor seating. A couple 2 seater tables and a booth inside + a tiled "bench" seat near the entrance to sit on. I live in Dearborn and enjoyed this experience so much that I'd say I would not bat an eye about driving here again just for ice cream. It's that good. I noted in amazement that the Butter Pecan had so many pecans in it when I was browsing, dare I say no more than 1 1/2 inches between them and not just "bits" either. read more

After traveling 40 minutes from Livonia I was very disappointed in the customer service. My come and kids were a fair size and the staff was friendly. My issue was with my to go hand packed order. I was told they were out of Half gallon packages but they had quarts. I ordered two quarts instead to make my half gallon of the same ice cream. As I went to pay I was told I would be charged the quarts price and not for a half gallon. The server said this was the direction from her boss and needed to follow that direction. I reduced my order to just the one and will not return to this Ashbys location. read more

DISAPPOINTED on the customer service. I travel about 30 minutes to get to the place but they did not have the waffle cones. So I asked when wound they have them ready ? (They make them right there at the store) Their answer was in about an hour. So I said I was willing to come back in an hour or hour and half max. and could they please save me at least 2 cones to make sure I dont drive up again in vain. They say no. Since I was willing to come back driving from so far I do not understand why they could not hold two cones for a customer who have been there three times in one week wanting to get icescream on a waffle cone. Really Gone Down Hill Ashby's in Grosse Pointe used to be one of the nicest community ice cream stores around. That was until longtime owners sold the business. The previous owners were always present managing the business and greeting customers. I have never seen the new owners... the place is run by high school kids. I went for ice cream this evening with my family. After we entered the shop for a number of minutes there was no one visible. Finally I peaked around a corner to a backroom and realized two high school kids were back there laughing and playing with their iPhones. After interrupting their leisure time by asking "can we get some help please?", the high school kids came out with no apology and just said "what will you have?". Worse... they did not wash their hands. I ended up eating my ice cream but throwing away my cone as they touched the cone with their bare hands (and you know where those kids use those phones). For the next 20 minutes my family and I leisurely sat in the shop and watched this routine unfold numerous times as the kids would go to the backroom and use their phones until the next customer got the courage to peak in the backroom to beg for help with no apology. Also, the place is dirty. The floormat has not been vacuumed in a long while nor has the sitting ledge been cleaned. The corners have not been dusted in a number of months by the amount of grime. On a positive note the ice cream is still top notch. Hope the new owners get their act together and restore the place to its former glory. read more

Everything a neighborhood ice cream parlor should be - high schoolers working the regsiter, low prices, tasty treats, and a bench in front to enjoy your ice cream outside. They have all the standard flavors, plus some fun additions like vanilla swirled with whisky caramel and health bars and a coconut ice cream with oreo pieces and fudge swirls. The selection of low fat yogurt is small but still has a few good flavors. And maybe I've gotten used to higher prices for ice cream treats (I'm looking at you ColdStone) but I was very impressed with the cost. BACK IN THE DAY TODAY: After visiting my sister and sharing a Southern-style dinner, we headed over to Grosse Pointe for desert and coffee, landing at Ashy's Sterling Ice Cream. A tiny space along the main drag in this affluent suburb northeast of Detroit upriver, I imagine this spot jumping on a warm, humid southeastern Michigan summer evening. The traditional two counter freezer set up, sample spoons and a simple menu makes choosing flavors easy. This local fixture is now under new management but the ice cream hasn't changed. As a freshman YEARS ago at Eastern Michigan University I would head down to Depot Town and have one scoop and lemon and one strawberry making my perfect desert combination. When I noticed Ashby's Lemon Cheesecake, I was transported fondly back in time. Large chunks of cheesecake added texture to the creamy, smooth desert. Classic strawberry in a double scoop in a cup. Nice small family mom and pop ice cream shop. Great find for the price and different favor ice cream, they have about 30 favors. They're always so willing to have you try samples! I really enjoy this place the only down fall is there's no bathrooms so no place to wash your hands if you get ice cream on them but over all a wonderful friendly place to enjoy. :) read more
