Mark is the real deal! We spent only one night at Ash Grove but are already planning a return trip in the near future. We stayed in the Elf Shelf - what a view! Super private, everything was orderly and easy to access. Check-in was a breeze and I really enjoyed talking to Mark and hearing his story. Highly recommend. Enjoy the trails, don't do too much and just be in nature. If time allows, drive a few minutes to Cedar Mountain Outpost for a coffee or hike to Reece Place Falls. You'll love it! read more

All I was planning for was a cabin out in western North Carolina that was close to waterfall country and would allow me a short retreat from every day life. What I got instead was the most relaxing and amazing family weekend trip ever. I found Ash Grove online and after reviewing their website - I booked the Woodspirits cabin. To book a room only a 50% deposit is required and the remaining charges upon arrival. We arrived and check in was quick and friendly. The owners gave us some information about the local area and a few suggestions. Let us know there was absolutely no cell reception but a land line phone to use if we needed. WiFi is provided if you want. We were taken to our cabin and given a brief run down. Honestly, when we arrived to the cabin I was just in heaven. It was completely what we needed. A balance of being outdoorsy but having the comfort of modern day necessities. Because let's face it - having a tent and sleeping outside is just not for everyone. And I Way overpacked. If you stay in one of the cabins - all you need is your own clothes and food. Everything else you would need is there for you. The reason I fell in love with this place is for so many different reasons. The camp itself is very quiet, peaceful and clean. The options of how you want to camp are plentiful. Pitch a tent, cabins, a gnome house which is literally just a wood house that's small with a wood platform to sleep on. They also have a common area for bathing and showering which is also very clean. There's a park for he kids, trails to walk on, a campfire with wood. It's just the perfect place. And on top of all that it's super close to DuPont National Park and Pisgah National Park. We spent one day at Pisgah and then drove up Blue Ridge Parkway. It was perfect. So many waterfalls and outdoorsy activities where we able to come back to the cabin and just sit on the screen in porch and just relax and enjoy Mother Nature at its finest. Ash Grove is also a little over an hour away from Biltmore Estates, which we did the next day. So you get the convenience of being able to do so many things but away from the hustle and bustle of it I can't explain how much I fell in love with this place. But it was perfect in every single way. The air up there just breathed new life into me. As busy as we stayed, I came back home feeling the most rejuvenated I had in a long time. I don't know when we will be back. All I know is that we will be back. This will definitely become a family vacation spot for us. If you're looking for the perfect camping spot - then stop looking. Cabins? Yeah. RV sites? Yeah, those too... Tent sites? NOW you're talkin'! And while Ash Grove has a few tent sites with Wi-Fi, that's not the reason we go there... it's the walk-to sites below the bath house that we find most appealing. Mark and Stephen bought this property and added these very campsites back in 2003. To access them, you need to take a walk in the woods... The trails to the sites are very well maintained and mulched; wheelbarrows are provided to help you lug your gear to the sites, and otherwise nature is left intact. Each campsite has a nicely leveled area for your tent, a fire pit and a picnic table. A few of the sites have a clothesline already strung, but I suspect those were just left by previous campers and not taken down. (I don't know how much good they'll do beneath the tree canopy, at least when trees are in leaf!) The bathhouse at Ash Grove is meticulously well-taken care of. Each side has a couple of sinks, three commodes and two shower stalls, as well as electrical outlets. They even have a hair dryer on each side. Water pressure is ample, and the water is certainly hot enough. Just outside the bathhouse is a double sink for doing dishes, and there is a washer and dryer for your convenience. That said, this is NOT a KOA! You really get a sense of nature here, and depending on your campsite can actually get a workout walking up and down the trails. The location of Ash Grove is also spectacular. It's about 6 miles south of Brevard - a wonderful city in and of itself, and WELL worth exploring - which just happens to also be the gateway to the Pisgah National Forest - with all of the wonders that that entails! Ash Grove is also about eight miles north of the best waterfalls that the DuPont State Forest has to offer. Additionally, Ash Grove is topographically more than a thousand feet above Brevard, and so the average temperature is perhaps 8 degrees Fahrenheit cooler than Brevard. With that in mind, Ash Grove also has a hot tub that is open roughly from October until early May(?), depending on the weather. Another thing we found thoroughly delightful is that Ash Grove is a campground with *Rules*. No, we're not talking about a sign that says NO! ...followed by everything you want to do. The Rules at Ash Grove are Rules that you might make up to remind folks of the Golden Rule. Keep the place clean. Don't make excessive noise. Don't be a jerk. Remember you are sharing the forest with other living beings. You know, those sorts of things! We're already looking forward to our next trip to Ash Grove. Oh yeah, you'll want to make your reservations early... they have fewer than 20 of the tent sites, so you know they'll go quickly! read more

We stayed 3 nights in our bumper pull. The campground was beautifully kept and very quiet. The internet was super fast, the owners were very friendly and accommodating. The lot was huge with a picnic table and campfire ring. You do need four wheel drive if you're pulling a trailer! The campground is very close to the waterfalls and about 10 minutes to town. What a great place to visit!! I was lucky enough to stay in the Gnome Home and the Elf Shelf during my stay and both are lovely! The family that runs the site is wonderful and so accommodating. The grounds are beautiful and well maintained and there is so much to do in the local area. I'm already anticipating my return trip. read more

As clean as the outdoors get! Well run, maintained, and friendly. My boyfriend's family started staying here three years ago for their annual camping trip, and I found it to be quite a treat. The guys who run it meet you at the gate and then show you around the upper camp area which comes complete with wheelbarrows to transport your stuff down to your site, and a bucket for putting out your fire at night. There's also wifi at the bathhouses, if you need it. We stayed in the Elder and Iris camp sites. Iris is the furthest down, so great for privacy, but further from the restrooms, if that's a concern. Location is great, very easy to get to local hiking spots. You cannot just reserve a site, but must submit a request which helps keep the sites mostly quiet and taken care of. We did have a noisy family next to us one night, but it didn't bother the rest of our camp party who were at a site down the path. Highly recommend! read more

I've been an active camper since childhood and try to get away for weekends camping at least once a month in my adult life, so I've been to a lot of campsites. That being said, this was BY FAR the BEST campsite that I have ever spent time in. It's located about 15-20 minutes from DuPont State Forest, in Transylvania County (the Land of Waterfalls), so it's a beautiful area. I typically drive after work and do very late check-ins (think 1 am), so at first I was a little annoyed to learn they don't allow anyone in past 9 pm. However, when I got there, I immediately understood why. They don't just hand you a campsite map and send you on your way, they take the time to greet you, gave us information on literally everything we could possibly want to know (best route to see the most waterfalls, nearby restaurants sorted by food type, directions to grocery stores, etc.), and even tips on how to build a fire in the wet environment. There's no cell service in the area, so this was invaluable. They do provide wifi as well in the main area. After all of this personalized information, they actually escorted us to our campsite personally. All the trails are mulch and easy to walk, and they even provide wheelbarrows to haul your gear (it's a short walk, but the wheelbarrow was awesome). They have a pump with fresh drinking water, a sink for dishes, an extremely clean and nice bathhouse, and a cute "pay it forward" site where you can take or leave items. Everything is clearly labeled (even the toilet paper - "please pull from the smaller side so we can replace rolls"), and you can tell they went out of their way to make everything easy and convenient. We stayed in the primitive camping sites, which were quiet and peaceful and a reasonable distance away from the cabins. Site for the tent was a soft mulch, had a nice firepit and picnic table. Very wooded/hilly/natural area. Had the best couple nights sleep in a tent ever. read more

Great campground located in beautiful Brevard, NC. Close to all of the incredible trails and waterfalls in Transylvania Co. The campground has everything you would need and want. Tent sites are located off trails in the middle of the woods but close enough to a cozy bath house (hot tub is nice during certain times of the year). I've been to this location numerous times and have never had an issue with noise....maybe the previous reviewer had super sensitive hearing. The owners got to great lengths to make sure everyone is enjoying their time and do a very nice job maintaining the grounds and cabins in tip top shape. I shall return! read more

I was really hoping for something different when I booked Ash Grove. It was clean, the owners were SUPER friendly, it's just NOT kid friendly. We camped here June of 2014 in a travel trailer. With a little bit of water on the pavement we almost didn't get our rig up the hill to our campsite. Site #4. The entire campground is hilly and steep and while that's great for adults, it wasn't ideal for camping with toddlers or even elementary aged children. The bathhouse was down a VERY steep huge hill making it a workout to get to and get back from. There was no where for the kids to ride their bikes without worrying about them face planting into the pavement from the steep terrain, or kick a ball without having to worry about chasing down the hill into the woods. There is a playground, but it too, is up a HUGE hill and it's a couple of homemade swings and 2 see saws. No swings for younger children or anything for them to do. So, my low rating has nothing to do with service or cleanliness, it's just that the terrain was too much for what we were wanting when camping with kids. read more

We stayed in the gnome home, which is a camping shelter. This worked out perfectly since it rained all weekend. Much more comfortable accommodation than tent camping would have been. The gnome home is also wildly adorable. I loved it. Camp grounds were easy to find. Cell service doesn't exist, but the part of the camp grounds is we were at had WIFI which was awesome. Short walk to restroom/shower facilities. Facilities were clean, standard camp ground showers. Staff was very friendly and helpful. We had a great stay ! read more

Want to stay at clean well kept and quiet campground this is it! I stayed at a hike-to site called Hemp, the site was very well maintained and spotlessly clean when I arrived. When I signed in the owners walked me to my site personally telling me about the campground as we walked. The bathhouse is clean and well kept, as is everything here. The campground and other campers are friendly, quiet, and respectful. If you are traveling to this area there is no better campground then Ash Grove! You are close to both Brevard and Hendersonville, so there is a lot to see and do. For nature lovers, or hikers, bikers, and photographers there are many state and federal parks in the area and waterfalls abound. It was truly a joy to camp here! The owners are extremely nice and accommodating and, as other reviewers have mentioned, do more than just tell you where to go--they also show you around and give you tips on how to camp most comfortably! My SO and I stayed in one of the stellar sites, which is a tent camping spot. The site was secluded and clean, with a fire pit and picnic table. There are wooden fences between the sites to help with seclusion and you're situated right in the woods! There are wheelbarrows to help you cart all your stuff from the parking lot to your site; clean restrooms with showers (AND HOT WATER!!!!), hair dryers, and plenty of toilet paper; a coin-op laundry room; a dishwashing area; and various picnicking sites. I think there's even a playground. I'm sure there's a lot more onsite but we were only there for one night and it rained pretty much the whole time so we didn't get out to explore much. The cabins look really nice though! Firewood is $6 a bundle and there are trash and recycle bins there too. At only about 10-15 minutes from various hiking trails in DuPont State Forest and a bunch of little mountain village stores (cafes, general stores, pottery), this location is prime. ALSO, there are these adorable little trails around the campsites, one of which is a meditation trail that leads to a little waterfall. We loved this place and will definitely return! read more

We base camped here during our one year anniversary in order to explore the region. We probably won't be back, but that's because we found some choice spots out in the bush, not because it sucked. On the contrary... The washing facilities were very clean and litter on the property was well policed. The parking is tight but there is definitely enough. Our site was one hundred yards from the car but large wheelbarrows are provided for shuttling your gear to and from. No other campsites were visible from ours, but this was due to thick laurels...we heard both beer burps and orgasms in the cool night air. Take some charcoal. Take some lighter fluid. Take some firewood. The fire rings are seriously difficult to get going, even for a seasoned pyro, and the owners sell very small bundles of wood for a hefty price. Their advice on how to build a fire works, but it costs you a bit of extra wood, like $4 worth per fire. You're better off using tips you've learned on Bear Grylls or Dual Survivor...or using the crap out of some lighter fluid. Last tip...while this sure ain't bear country and you'll certainly not be raped in the moonlight by a mountain lion, there are definitely coons and possums so it's best to follow their logic on coolers and foodstuffs. read more

Staying at Ash Grove with Esther and Mark is just the best!!! Their property is clean, organized and just perfect for a weekend get a way. They have a variety of cabins, drive up sites and wooded camp sites. We have stayed in the wooded camp sites 3 different times. The communication is wonderful and they ensure that your tent will fit in the camp site space. The sites are private but close to the bath house and your car. They have smaller sites and bigger one to accommodate a group. They greet you when you arrive, give you local information and go over the campsite protocol. Also, it was a bit noisy between the other campers, the road, the dogs barking and the ambulance rushing past at who-knows-what hour of the morning. Great Memorial Day weekend camping at Ash Grove. We brought our teardrop camper and were nestled into a fairly private spot near tent campers. The campground is nicely shaded and spacious enough. For a holiday weekend, it was amazingly quiet and peaceful. The location is in the heart of hiking and mountain biking country with many beautiful waterfalls. The owners are hospitable, friendly and helpful. The attention to detail leaves you guessing about nothing and able to settle in quickly. read more

Our first time camping here and we can't wait to come back!! We prefer tent camping with electric hookups, and they have a few sites that have power, water and wi-fi. These are fairly close to the road, but surprisingly quiet. The sites are spacious. There are a few nice hiking trails onsite that take you past the primitive sites and down to a nice little spring and waterfall plus a "meditation trail." The bathhouse is clean and convenient. The campground is hilly - but we're in the mountains so it should be! The owners are very friendly and helpful. read more

I've just gotten home from a 5 day retreat at Ash Grove. This has been my second year of camping in the secluded camp sites with my best friend. I don't have one single complaint. The grounds are beautiful. One morning I saw a red headed woodpecker in the trees above the bath house. It rained one night and that made our $30 Walmart tent a little more challenging to sleep in, but the sites are carved out in such a way that there was no flooding around our tent. The owners remembered us from last year and took extra care to remind us of a few tips and details about the campgrounds. As we are young two girls, we were nervous at first to be camping in seclusion, but upon meeting the owners and chatting for a while, both this year and last, we feel completely comfortable and at home at ash grove. We will be returning next year for our annual camping excursion, and hopefully even sooner than that! read more

I must disagree w/Dee. We camped several places this Summer including Ash Grove on two occasions w/2 kids (9 & 12) + a dog. We stayed in the 'camping' part of the campground & it is so nice to have space to yourself & NOT be right on top of another campsite (a la most state parks). So we will return to Ash Grove and may, in fact, do so this weekend. BTW Dee, IMHO if you are dragging a trailer along or as you put it 'a rig' to many of us that isn't really camping anyway so.....there you go. This was our third stay at Ash Grove. We have camped at one of the techno sites and also stayed in their cabins. For this stay we chose the three bedroom cabin. The cabin was very comfortable and extremely clean. WiFi was strong and we had a good selection of satellite TV stations. This property is an oasis that is very convenient to Dupont State Forest, many waterfalls and a short drive to Brevard. We were made to feel right at home and will be back again. read more
