I ended up booking here when my original camping plans at Table Rock National Park fell through. This motel was the best impromptu decision I've made while traveling. The accommodations were great. The vibe was retro and family-oriented. Great place to hang your hat and come back to after a day of hiking and sight-seeing. The staff were personable, fun, and extremely helpful with input on what local sights and activities there were nearby. I ended up having a far better time than I would've had camping! Staff is observing COVID precautions while still maintaining a great posture with customers. 10/10 recommend this motel and all the area has to offer, COVID or no COVID. read more

Super cute motel in the heart of Brevard. We spent a long weekend there when we went to see a Lyle Lovett concert at the Brevard Music Center. The beds are comfortable, the back room that we stayed in (#18) was adorable with it's kitchenette and outside patio area. The water in the shower is hot and strong. And the air conditioner in the room is amazingly efficient and cold. I mean, seriously, what more can you ask for in a place to stay? Plus, hey-yo! Pink flamingos, neon, and 60s roadside/motel kitsch? Oh yeah, a friendly, happy, charming, and helpful front desk staff. I love that they reserve maid service for those who ask, to conserve resources. We stopped by the front desk to pick up extra coffee each night, but no one needs fresh sheets EVERY day. If you hang your towels to dry, you can get 2 days use out of them just fine. Or set them outside and get new ones as you need them. Two criticisms: Not even a complaint, just a comment as a new homeowner who has been doing maintenance on her house - I noticed that the weatherstripping on the room door has gaps (you can see a lot of light through the door) and I'd bet the A/C would be even more efficient with an updated weatherstripping around the door (and maybe the windows). And two with the hardwood/vinyl floors in rooms, some bedside rugs would be nice. For some reason someone reviewed this place as "creepy" recently and I have no idea why. It's a lot of fun and worth checking out. Or in, as the case may be. :) read more

We spent at The Sunset Motel while attending a music festival in Brevard and had the most wonderful experience. It felt like we were staying with friends! The motel is perfectly located in the downtown area and is within walking distance to cool many shops and delicious restaurants. Elizabeth, the manager, was so hospitable. She went over the motel requests and procedures and ensured that we had everything we needed for a comfortable stay. She seemed genuinely interested in who we were and what brought us to Brevard. The room was adorable and spotless. The retrovated vibe is supplemented with more modern amenities such as an electronics charging station, flat screen tv, coffee maker, microwave, and mini fridge. I loved being able to open the windows! We could not have asked for a better introduction to Brevard. We look forward to coming back!! read more

Hey? What's up? The Sunset Motel is kewl. The place was spotless and didn't smell like someone had soaked the linens in industrial strength Febreeze. The rooms and grounds are super cute, decorated with old 45 records, flamingos, and croquet sets. Our room had a new trendy leather desk chair and other items were also nice -- not expensive, but new, tasteful and in good condition. Tilework in bathroom was spotless. In other words, it gets a big seal of approval from us homogays! And plus, everyone we dealt with there was very friendly and sweet. And it's a fantastic bargain. Thank you I know. read more

The only thing I'm sad about is that there was no pink flamingo in my room. I found the hotel on Yelp! and checked out their website. It featured great pictures of all its rooms - so you can choose exactly what you want. I loved that. I chose a great room that had a king bed, couch, flatscreen, micro fridge, bathroom and pink flamingo. We arrived Friday night around 7pm and were checked in by a very friendly front desk. Got into the room, and didn't find the flamingo. Rough life. We did see one outside so maybe he wanted a change in scenery. As for the room, I may be a bit biased because I live in an old house. It was super clean, but you could tell that the renovations weren't super-intensive - not that I cared! Everything looked great, worked, and again, was super clean. Fantastic for what you pay! We spent the day rock climbing at Cedar Rock and decided to spend the night in Brevard. We found this great locally owned little gem on Yelp. The prior reviews must have been written during the change of ownership. The new owner(s) have done a bang up job with the place! Our room was warm, cozy, and well lit! The shower was fantastic! We had a kitchen adjoining our room with a little breakfast nook (complete with plates and silverware). All very neat and tidy. The bed was squeaky but very comfortable. We have no complaints. Don't expect cookie cutter corporate outfitting at this place. Each room appears to be individual. I saw on their website a neat looking mosaic tile kitch 50's bathroom. Wish we got that room. In a nutshell, truly pleasant; and the staff was fantastic and pleasant. An overall fun experience. 4 1/2 Stars! read more

Well you can't get more of a home feel than this! Stuck driving from chain to chain because of travel? This place is adorable. The lady at the desk was EVERYTHING. I would love to know her life story. The rooms are decorated exactly how you'd assume they'd be once you see the lobby. Records hang and decorate the walls so much that you have to say something even though you're sure EVERYONE tells this glamazon every day. No one who lives within 25 miles can stay here, and "you can take one guess why". Made an affordable night have some great smiles and laughs after a long day. Thank you so much! read more

'Spent two days in the area exploring the national forests and this was "home base" for the weekend. For about $70 a night (which is still anywhere from $30 to $50 less than other accommodations in town, on average), you get a clean basic motel room with small refrigerator, coffee machine, basic cable, and a decent bathroom. It's not fancy, but they're dog-friendly ($50 deposit, $40 refund if Fido doesn't tear anything up; no cats allowed), located off the main drag, and cheap. The online reservation system wasn't working when I tried it, so I made reservations via telephone. The process went smoothly and there were no hiccups when I checked in late at night 2 days later. Note that the office closes after 11 PM, so if you arrive then or a little later then you're going to be out of luck, as far as getting a key to your room goes. This place is obviously a family-run type of place (see above re: late arrival times) but they try hard and are reasonable with which to deal. The staff was friendly, even going so far as to leave the office and go to the storeroom next door to get us an extra coffee packet for the next morning. We arrived late in the evening and discovered (when AT&T decided to grace us with coverage) that the front desk had left us a voice mail confirming that we were indeed en route and still planning to stay the night. To keep costs low, they only provide fresh linens and soap bars upon your arrival for stays of less than three days. However, you can request new linens and housekeeping service at no extra charge, if you wish. The breakfast provided each morning in the lobby didn't look like much (bagels, donuts, etc.) but it was available and, again it's not like you're paying to stay at the Ritz, either. In addition to single and double motel rooms, they also offer for a little more money a small apartment-like setup with a kitchen above the office. Take a moment to read the short guest services and information booklet left in each room (look in one of the nightstands next to the bed). It's obvious there's no corporate communications director overseeing this interesting and personable piece of literature. In it, you'll learn they're pretty hardcore about their No Smoking policy, plus the fact that they have 2 of Brevard's famous white squirrels living out back. Keep in mind that this is a no-frills place and you'll do fine here. read more

My boyfriend and I stayed here for Memorial Day weekend during the White Squirrel Festival. Everyone was so helpful from the time we called to book the room until the day we checked out. It's well within walking distance to downtown Brevard. We stayed in the room above the manager's office. The room had a full kitchen with a fridge, stove, coffee maker, and a microwave. Also had some dishes and silverware. The wifi here is super easy to connect to from any device. The flat screen tv has every type of connection that you'd want to hook up to while you're there. There is already a cable tv box and dvd player in the room. Even though we had a queen bed, the room was still big enough for us to leave our things out. The bed room had a nice size closet. There was a much bigger closet in the hallway. The bathroom was a nice size. Everything was clean and there was always plenty of towels. There was no noise from traffic, other guests, or staff. The ladies were always eager to give directions or to tell you where to go. At the end of our stay, we didn't feel like random people checking out of some place we stayed for the weekend. We felt like our business was truly appreciated and they would all remember us when we come back. Overall, our stay was awesome. We'll definitely be staying here any time we are back in the area. The best thing about this place is the full kitchen. We bought all of our own food, additional small appliances, and a cooler. Saving money on food allowed us to do so much more with our weekend. While the prices here may seem a bit high, it's nothing when you factor in how much you would normally spend on breakfast, lunch, and dinner for two or more people. Like I said, this is an excellent value! Bottom Line: If you have to spend money on a hotel, why not spend it on a hotel where you can take your own food and cook your own meals? I stayed here as part of a group that booked the entire property for a local event. And while I always support staying where the group stays, on this trip I should have stayed somewhere else. The experience was not very good for the price paid. On a cleanliness scale, I would give them a grade of C-. The carpet was quite dirty, and the bathtup/shower was marginal. The interior, while recently renovated, looked cheesy: mismatched pieces of flea market furniture combined with new items (probably) from a Walmart, with some of such items stacked on top of another. The TV service was atrocious! VERY limited number of channels and - honest - this is the first time I have ever needed to operate two remotes to use the TV. One turned the TV on and off and operated the volume; the other turned the cable box on and off. Is this really necessary? To top things off, the place imposes a $150 fine if they catch you smoking ANYWHERE on the property!!!! I can understand applying that to smoking in one of the rooms, but in the parking lot? Really?!?! All in all, this was a very bad value. read more

Very simple motel not bad for the price but WiFi went out constantly and for kids that can be hard. Bathroom window faces a two story home that can see down into the shower so keep the crank windows shut. Toilet paper and soap is limited according to (Eric) even before COVID so bring your own. Its not really themed for the 60's just has not been updated since then. read more

First off, we were greeted by the very friendly manager, Eric, at the front desk who was very welcoming and gave us tons of tips on how to best enjoy Brevard! The room was great, very cleanly and you can always go to the front desk to get anything else that you need (ice, extra sugar, creamer, etc). Rooms are TINY, they charge way too much for those tiny rooms (seriously, if two of you stay in a room, and BOTH of you have a suitcase, you wont fit in some of the rooms. They say they are pet friendly, but they really, really aren't. We stayed there while we were looking for a house, and had to leave our tiny dog in the room while we were at work. Well, despite the "do not disturb" sign on the door, the cleaning staff came in, and he started barking. They CALLED ME AT WORK to come get him because the woman couldn't clean the room. The owner was also quite rude. Just not worth it at all for how much they charge. Seriously, you can get a bigger, cleaner, nicer room at the Holiday Inn express just a couple miles away for the same price. read more

I actually read some reviews about the hotel before we went which got my interest. I really wanted to stay there but it said 2 night minimum and we were just passing through. I dropped a quick note to the hotel to see if there was any chance we could get a room for 1 night and to my surprise, they answered very quickly with Yes. Eric helped me get my reservation set up and was super patient while I tried to get everything together. When we arrived the girl at the desk was super friendly and suggested we check out the town a few bocks away. Our entire experience in Brevard was fantastic and it was all because of awesome reviews of the hotel. It's cute, kitshy and fun, the owners work very hard to make it a great place and I think they succeed. Our room was clean and comfortable, plenty of outlets for charging and a clean bathroom =) It's also REALLY nice to know that we're helping local business and not a huge chain hotel. While driving through this spectacularly beautiful part of North Carolina, our minivan broke down, and we became accidental tourists in Brevard. After doing what we needed to do to get a rental vehicle, our next need was for lodging. Matter-of-factly, there aren't many hotel/motel choices in the immediate area, and their prices reflected this. We only needed (and praying for) one night's stay, and also felt somewhat limited since we had the family dog with us. After making a handful of calls, we learned that the places that accepted pets added a surcharge. We pulled into the Sunset Motel in hopes of getting a room at a good price, and met Eric, the Manager, at the front desk. Eric was very nice, gracious, and was very sympathetic and accommodating to our circumstances. Needless to say, we stayed there that night. The price for our room was in line with what we had paid the previous two nights on our journey from the Texas Panhandle. Eric was also resolute in recommending an auto repair place for us to have our van brought to for the needed repairs the next morning. About this unique motel, it was built in the 50s and has been renovated and upkept to maintain this nostalgic flavor. We appreciated this the moment we stepped into the office and little lounge area. There were records, photos and other memorabilia which was a throwback to the more relaxed days of road travel. Our room had a poster of Marilyn Monroe on the wall and other musical references throughout. The room was small but cozy and was our makeshift home for a night and most of the next day. I heartily recommend this motel for many reasons, but the most endearing reason is how hospitable Eric and his wife were to us. As it turned out, they are also dog people. Finally, the next day, while the van was being repaired, we walked around the downtown area, which is but 3-4 blocks from the motel, and enjoyed the loveliness of Brevard. The Sunset Motel has become endearing to us, and will remain our Brevard home away from Texas! read more

My wife and I don't like chain motels. They don't have character. The Sunset Motel was perfect for us. It was a step back to the 1950's. We came in late August to see waterfalls and shed the drought and dry air of Colorado where we live. Asheville was a disappointment, but Brevard was just the ticket for experiencing the incredible green of the forested hills. We found good restaurants and quiet neighborhoods for our evening walks and parks to exercise in seclusion in the mornings. The staff and owner were extra helpful in guiding us to beautiful waterfalls. Years ago we honeymooned in Charleston, but we would have had just as good a time if we'd come here. A couple of hints if you're coming for the waterfalls: We wished we'd brought our "grippers" (studded attachments for our shoes that are a godsend on ice) because fording a stream over bedrock was so insanely slippery that we turned back. Also, be sure to bring insect repellent. On some trails there were mosquitos and tiny irritating flies. read more

Only stay here if it's your last resort and want to save some cash. For $70 you'll get a barely-functioning toilet, one dim lightbulb for the whole room, people walking by your window and slamming doors, a tiny crappy TV, a stinky breakfast and an all-round gross feel. I am very happy to have found this place. The rooms are smaller than many newer facilities, but quite adequate. I found everything to be very clean, well maintained, perfectly suited. It does remind you of an older roadside motel of 50 years ago, on the outside, but inside it retains some of that charm while hosting many current updates. I would not hesitate to stay there again and highly recommend it to anyone that isn't hung up on a chain hotel with the institutionalized breakfast. With a refrigerator and microwave in the rooms, it was quite nice for us to have a choice of having provisions in the room or some other plan. All of the bedding, linens and towels seemed new and of very good quality as well as smelling fresh. The staff was very nice and attentive. Don't be fooled by the price. This place is just fine. You won't regret staying there. I sure didn't and plan to do so again when I'm in that area. read more

First let me say that this place is absolutely adorable! Wonderfully and enchantedly decorated with everything retro. Rooms are (fifties style) small but not cramped. And they are spotlessly clean, like not a speck on the carpet clean. I thought the energy efficiency to be a bit over the top tho- especially as pertains to the shower heads. I really do not like those water saving ones, you can never adjust the water temperature right! And one drawback to the fifties: I'm too tall for the shower heads (I'm 5,10"). Kinda disappointing. Now here's the part that would have made me completely skip this motel if I had known it in advance: NO smoking even in the parking lot! I thought New York was bad on the smoking thing, but this was a bit much. And I can understand having a non-smoking place where you don't smoke in the rooms, used to that, but to threaten a $200 fine for smoking in the parking lot seems a bit extreme. Not that they weren't very nice about it, they were, and even said there was a table and chairs around the back we could use. Which by the way, you'll need a flashlight if you want to smoke after dark. I just can't understand how dogs are more preferable than smokers! Like I said, great place, just figured I'd let other smokers know you might want to pass this place up. But feel free to bring your dog, lol. read more

My son-in-law performs in the Mountain Song Festival. The family wanted a "home base" in close proximity to the Music Center for convenience, rather than driving from and to Asheville every day. Sunset was able to provide perfect accommodations for their family of 4, including 4-year-old and 6-month-old daughters. We were also able to invite a second family to join us, all adults. It was such a perfect meeting place, roomy and homey, with a fully equipped kitchen. The location of the cottage was ideal, secluded and quiet behind the main motel, but with a 5-minute driving distance of the festival. All of the staff were friendly and accommodating. My 4-year-old granddaughter left a couple of her dolls in the room, and Cheri called me immediately to say that they had the dolls and would hold them for us to pick up. So special!! Every room had access to the wrap-around deck. If I could make any suggestion at all, it would be to add a small half-bath in the main living area. The cottage is quiet and secluded, very private, and surrounded by trees and a large yard. Really lovely. Pet-friendly rooms are also available. read more

The furniture in my room appeared to have been bought at a garage sale or flea market, mismatched and banged up a bit. But it was functional, tidy, and affordable. The owner was friendly and helpful. I really wanted to love this place. The woman who took my reservation was great. But instead, I'm a little confused by the glowing reviews. We arrived and found a very musty room - had to open all windows, which meant it was noisy - and an unremarkable small, recently repainted motel room. The beds were comfortable and so was the bedding, but the price for what you get is excessive. And why two beds in such a small room? Guess so they can charge the increased price, but it really is not much better than a traditional motel. Coffee at the office, and maybe even a continental breakfast would have been a nice touch, but no one is even at the desk until 9. The internet did not work well at all, even though I was assured (twice) that I should have had service. Which was a hassle when I needed to communicate with work. The AC/heat only works intermittenty, and is very noisy. Didn't make it better that a drunk driver crashed into the lot, barely missing cars and the building, at 3:30 a.m.! Can't blame that on the motel though. read more
