The ropa viaja was flavorful, portions were filling, tostones were crispy and based on this meal I would totally come back but my husband got the lechon Asado. It was very dry and lacked flavor. Okay Cuban Food in Pflugerville…read more Tropicana sets the standard for Cuban food in this town. I have not been to Havana on South Congress in years. Back in the day, Havana impressed as well. What about Chicho's? It won't thrill you. It won't kill you. * * * a) The menu at Chicho's is small. The menu at Tropicana is infinite. Chicho's is mostly a sandwich place. But they have some plates. Tropicana has everything. b) Servings at Chicho's are small. Small servings? At a Cuban restaurant? Yes - Miami has some Cuban restaurants with small servings too. But Cuban is where you often go when you are looking for some serious bellybusting. Havana Harry's is the model for ... your appetizer, your main course and your dessert are EACH as filling as a Thanksgiving Dinner. That is three Thanksgiving Dinners. The pork chop I got at Chicho's was cut thin. How thin was your pork chop, Samuel C? Funny you should ask, Yelp Reader. It was maybe a thickness of three on a delicatessen slicer. Probably closer to two. It was like eating a slice of ham out of an Oscar Mayer ham for little kids's lunch pack. It was nicely sauteed and had a sweet sauce. (Shades of the Oscar Mayer ham again). I ate my ration. There was an ice cream scoop's worth of congris. It was first rate congris ... the best thing on the plate. I was sad when my ice cream scoop's worth was gone. There were four maduros which counts as a legal but unimpressive serving. They were standard. There was a miniscoop of salad - but you know the salad you get as a side garnish in Mexican and Cuban restaurants. You don't eat it and it is no loss. * * * The other downside was the strawberry juice drink con leche. It was a standard industrialized strawberry pulp pack for drinks Which is par for the course when you order these things. Either something was funny with the strawberry pulp or something was wrong with the milk. 85 percent of the sips were okay. 15 percent were - wait a minute - something is wrong. The wrongness was inconsistent enough that I did not want to complain to management. But the more I reflect on it - the more I am sure I would not order another juice drink for a beverage. * * * Overall, my basic dishes were good enough that I could see eating there again if I happened to be in the neighborhood. But Pflugerville is full of amazing places ... And there is some great Yelp reviewing to be done in that town. And if I am hungering for Cuban ... there is always Tropicana. * * * Actually ... If I am hungering for Cuban ... There is always Miami. Eat at the best Cuban places in Miami And you will be so happy you will never want to eat again. Plus you will be so full it will be physically impossible for you to eat again. Ever. * * * No Cuban restaurant in Austin takes you to that extreme of happiness. But Tropicana does a good job of getting you 2/3 of the way there.

I went to my friends campaign event at Cuba 512, known for traditional Cuban cuisine. They had a…read morelarge room that was reserved for the event separate from the dining area. I started with the Margarita on the rocks from the happy hour menu. It was made from scratch with tequila, triple sec, fresh lime, and cane sugar. I added mango flavor and tajin. The event ordered the Tropical Ceviche for the table with fresh fish cured in lime, with cilantro, avocado and onions. It was served with plantain chips. The flavors in this ceviche were so balanced and light. I was blown away on how much I enjoyed this. For my entree, I ordered Lechón Asado the most traditional Cuban dish. It is pulled pork marinated with Cuban Mojo criollo and slowly oven roasted. It was served with your choice of beans, rice and plantain. I went with the black beans, white rice and Yucca con Mojo. You can taste the citrus, garlic, and slow-roasted depth in every bite. It was juicy without being heavy and felt authentically prepared. The portion was generous, and everything on the plate complemented the pork beautifully. It felt comforting, well balanced, and thoughtfully executed. I did have an issue with slow service as far as receiving my food and one margarita I ordered was never delivered and I had to follow up on. Also my food was added to another person's check instead of on a separate check. However, these issues can be expected with a large event. It was a great location to host an event. If you're craving real Cuban flavors, Cuba 512 is a great choice.

First time visiting after seeing an ad for their Easter brunch buffet, and overall it was a mixed…read morebut positive experience. We made reservations in advance (there is a $5 per person reservation fee), and the flyer advertised hours from 10am-2pm. However, when we arrived just before 11am, the restaurant was still closed. After checking in about our reservation, we were eventually seated and able to order drinks, which were brought out promptly. The buffet itself wasn't ready until around 11:45am, which was a bit of a wait, but once it opened, the food did not disappoint. There was a good variety of options, with the shredded pork and creamy garlic chicken being the standout dishes--both were absolutely delicious. The coffee was also strong and flavorful, which I appreciated. The restaurant has a warm, rustic feel, though parking is limited to street parking only. The staff seemed a bit disorganized and confused at times, but they were friendly throughout the experience. My only suggestion would be to offer a way to toast bread and bagels, or at least make that option more visible to guests. Overall, the quality of the food was solid, and despite a few hiccups with timing and organization, I'd be open to coming back and trying their buffet again.

What a pleasant surprise, it's restaurant week here in town. We decided to try their menu and also grab a Cubano while we're there. We started with the shrimp and the tapas. The shrimp was lite with a tropical feel to it. The tapas was very good. The pork was fork tender. Tacos and chicken came out next. The chicken was tender and full of flavor. The tacos were delicious. So many incredible flavors. Now for the reason we came. The Cubano! A soft bread, toasted to perfection with the right amount of meat, cheese, mustard, and pickles. Wow..... when that first bite hits your soul
