My boys with JJ
Joyce Z.

My two sons (14 and 10) both got certified here by instructor JJ. He's very patient and pat attention to details, especially safeties. Great service and good prices. Looking forward to their advanced certificates.

Thanks JJ, Rita, D and all the instructors for their great work! They helped me carefully picked my gears and taught me how to dive with patience and true care. I finished my open water lessons today and I'd like to recommend the team to everyone interested in investing in and enjoying this passion.

Craig, the owner, made everything feel easy and personal from the start. Signing up for classes, scheduling, getting certified... all seamless. No pressure, no ego, just genuine passion for diving and people. Craig even moved class dates around to accommodate our schedules. Who does that? That level of care meant everything to us. The entire team was incredible. Supportive, patient, knowledgeable, and just good humans. We didn't just learn how to dive...we built confidence, memories, and friendships that will last a lifetime. We'll absolutely be continuing our certifications here and buying our gear here. No question. We thought we were signing up for scuba classes. What we found was a dive family.

Whether you choose PADI or NAUI, the team at Sharky's make it as painless as possible. Great selection of gear and great pricing whether you are an entry-level diver or the most technical gear-head. I must have asked a million questions. I am such a procrastinator. I signed up late. I called and I asks, I need two spaces and there's only one left. He calls a few people makes some sort of arrangements. Bam calls me back and I have two spots on this boat for July 18 and 19th. Book it Gleno!!!!!!! He answered the phone each time with efficiency professionalism and accuracy in just a few words. Love this guy. We get on the Cee Ray (the boat) set up our gear, get the details, briefing and our bunks. Everyone on the Cee Ray was very friendly and welcoming. We were strangers amongst many local friends. We were welcomed and definitely not left out of the laughs and good stories. The travel stories were all wonderful to hear. We dove on Saturday. The briefings about each dive site were informative and exactly what was told. The Dive Masters all of them (Mikee, Casey, and a few more) were helpful without gear, air fills, and efficiency was the name of the game for this scuba shop. Breakfast lunch snacks were all very tasty and full of flavor. We appreciated the service and the cleanliness of the Cee Ray and the folks running the boat were amazing as well. My friend and I felt welcomed, and it is always nice to dive with such an outstanding Dive shop. We were offered to continue on with Women's Dive Weekend with crafting the following day. Jennifer took us around the shop and I decided to get air fills and get a new compass. Glenn my new friend sold me a new one and installed it. Great service for sure. Wonderful experience to say the least. The value of how much I paid and the service. The price was right now sure. Best value.

There's a real passion for diving at this shop and it's infectious. Where Divers West really shines is its instructors. I did my open diver certification with my instructor Ron and dive master Jacque. Both Ron and Jacque made me feel safe the entire time. They were also extremely patient and informative while making sure everyone in the class had thoroughly learned their skills. When someone didn't understand something, they would slow down and explain further. They were also very good at adapting their teaching styles according to the different personalities of everyone in the class. I was so impressed! Thank you, Ron and Jacque!

Even if you are completely new to diving, the courses very well prepare you for what to expect and possible hazards that you could encounter. Some basics: -Get a mask that fits -You'd need to experiment with different fins that match your swimming style. -Get the hose with a valve, you'll need it when youre hitting the real waves. -Buy the boots with the extra layers; your feet and fins will thank you. -Always use defog every time you can because it will fog every time it could. -Remember to breathe. -Have a separate bag for your valuables. My class' instructor was Mark Kempe, and he was the most personable person I've ever interacted with. He loves talking about VR (Half-Life: Alyx) and software - he loves that stuff. He also used to fly planes, ride bikes - pretty much everything - he's done it. Javier, the owner, is such a cool guy too. Tons of fun experience to share and encourages you to join them, too. He likes flight simulator games. haha We started off with 2 days of pool diving. We got familiar with our gear, practice basic skills, we even got to play around with the extra air we have left to get comfortable. Same thing was with day 2 - we picked up where we left off and we just had the rest of the time to continue practicing the skills that we could improve on. Day 3 - it was at Veterans Park, Redondo Beach. It was raining too, and it added to the already fun trip. I felt very comfortable with what ive learned in the pool and i was actually pretty excited for our first open water dive. Got to see an octopus. Remember, to walk on your feet until you cant walk anymore and then put your fins on. Dont be afraid of the open water and stay close with your buddy. Day 4 - CATALINA! When you get to Catalina, USE THE TRANSPORT SERVICE - its SUPER WORTH IT. They will pick up and load one bag and transport it to and from the dive site and they will even store it for you until you are ready to leave - it will save your back and it will save your energy. At the dive site, you dont even have to go far to see the beautiful stuff - its right there when you hit the water! Mark even saw a technical diver with the advance gear and had him show us how it works and how its different. I think that person was a technical level diver and he also explained everything very well. WE GOT TO SEE THE BLACK SEA BASS!!! OMG. I cant wait to make new friends and go on more dives. This opens a whole new world of opportunity and adventure for me, and its only going to get better and more fun from here.

But since I paid $150 for their annual membership, I thought at least I should still be able to get air refills with my own tank. Unfortunately, when I returned, I once again encountered the same staff member, Julia. She spoke to me in a dismissive and arrogant tone, telling me: "You have to talk to my boss unless you want service here." This made me feel like I was the one at fault, even though I had already paid for a year of membership. When I asked if I could get a refund if they didn't want to serve me, Julia simply repeated that I had to talk to her boss. This is unacceptable. I am a customer, not your employee. I should not be treated as if I have to "report" to a manager in order to receive basic service that I already paid for. Frankly, I was so frustrated by her arrogant and racist attitude that I swore out loud. I don't like her behavior, and I don't like the way she treats non-white customers. Julia consistently acts superior, with a white-supremacist mindset, and it ruins the entire atmosphere of this dive shop. For the record, other staff members--like Pat and the older gentleman who works on Sundays--have always been friendly and respectful. But if you encounter Julia, my honest advice is: walk away. She is rude, dismissive, and makes the whole shop look terrible. I would rather lose my membership fee than ever come back. With Julia working here, this dive shop will never deserve respect. Stay away if you value fair and respectful treatment.

Bula! Thank you ScubaX travel and Scuba schools of America…read more Our dive trip to Fiji was absolutely outstanding. The diving exceeded expectations with warm, clear water, vibrant soft corals, and an abundance of marine life at every site. From colorful reef fish and turtles to sharks cruising by, every dive felt alive and unforgettable. The dive operators were professional, safety-focused, and genuinely welcoming. Briefings were thorough, groups were well managed, and the guides clearly knew the reefs intimately. Their passion for the ocean and respect for the environment really stood out. Above the water, Fiji was just as special. The warmth and kindness of the Fijian people made the trip even more memorable, and the relaxed island atmosphere was the perfect complement to full days of diving.

Rusty not only talked me into retaking the Open Water course, but also two boat trips. The total of which was $905.00. I regretted my purchase and wrote to him the next day, asking for a refund. The stated refund policy on their website is that trips can be refunded if canceled 30 days before the start of travel. Two weeks later, I still haven't received the refund. Against my better judgment, I visited the store for my first class and was talked into buying $5,710 worth of overpriced scuba equipment, before we even entered the pool. I left the store never even getting the $4,638 scuba system I was charged for. I have open disputes with my credit card company to get my money refunded. I have also filed a complaint with the Better Business Bureau. I found online that Rusty Berry and Scuba Schools of America have a bad reputation in the scuba diving community, for disingenuous sales tactics, inflated prices, and questionable refund policies. Visit scubaboard.com and search for Scuba Schools of America. There's a whole thread about them and the negative experience others have had with them. Avoid this store and its owner.
