NEGATIVES -1) The access to the boat IS NOT handicap accessible. I did not see this warning on their webpage when we ordered a ticket for our 75 year old mother. If I missed the warning I apologize. -2) Tickets are non refundable once you order. This was noted on their website. We ended up loosing (1) $40 ticket cost because our mother was not able to go. It would have been nice to have been offered a voucher to come back at a later date considering, A) you had our money already, B) 1 return voucher would have obviously turned into other purchased tickets and not just the one person and they would have gained more fees. -3) Because tickets are non refundable I do not recommend buying them in advance. Although you save $5 by buying early you may end up loosing out if your whole party doesn't end up going like we did. Just get there at least 30-45 minutes early and get in line. You'll be fine.

As a natural place, Topanga Canyon epitomizes what much of mountainous L.A. Every once in a while, the lands lashes out, and the Palisades Fire was close enough to Topanga Canyon to remind everyone of just how vulnerable we all are, especially when we live on hillsides amid the trees and scrub brush. I don't wish disaster or any sort of ill will on the people who live here, but the people who live here, while many of them fierce champions of the wildness of the land, are really part of the problem. Ideally, this would all be wilderness. But people live here, so there are stores, and more people living and spending their days here. I understand the hippie and even back-to-the-land notions of the 1960s and '70s, but even then, this secluded ideal was being co-opted into an exclusive ideal--OK, not intentionally or in any kind of widespread way, at first, but who can afford to live here now if they don't already own the land? That's a really sad truth about much of California now, and it all comes down to pure greed disguised as an inexorable market truth, a physical law as reliable, immutable, and potentially punishing as gravity or the spread of wildfire. It is beautiful, though. As it happens, I've recently read two works of fiction that mention some of the new-money fakers that occupy this canyon. In both, someone was pretending to be someone he was not, in often frightening and offensive ways. Southern California can feel like that sometimes--a lot of the time, if I'm being honest. If you don't care about any of this, it's fun to drive from the 101 to the 1 on the 27, and vice versa. Just don't do it in the rain. Or during the Santa Anas.

Ever since I started hiking, I've had an affinity for this particular park because you can do an…read moreeasier hike or get into the elevation and exploration offered by the local mountains and hills. In the summertime, it can be super hot so it's best to get started earlier in the morning. Recently, though we had a little rain and there was a whole lot more greenery than I ever remember seeing or expected. This was my first trip out in probably over a decade, so I decided to go in from a different direction to change it up a little bit, and I started from Bell Canyon and what a different beautiful trail that was with a creek running next to it, but before you go, I didn't notice until on my return back to my truck that this particular trail is actually private to those who live in the neighborhood; the few people I passed were pleasant and never asked if I was local or anything, so I think if you park and are just respectful and keep it quiet there won't be a big deal, but this trail is taking you around the mtn, so you're gonna add mileage to get to a place that you could actually park closer. The main trails are all well kept and in good condition and it's not until you get into the lesser used further out trails that you might encounter some slight bushwhacking, but the castle peak Summit is beautiful and fun as is the cave of the munits and other holes. Parking can be a pain, but it can be found, but may require a short walk.
