When I say I got hooked immediately, I mean it. I made some cool new friends and had truly the world's best diving instructor - Richie who has now been dubbed our scuba dad. My whole certification group ended up going on to get our Advanced open water, and then a few of us also did our wreck and nitrox certs too! Rusty not only talked me into retaking the Open Water course, but also two boat trips. The total of which was $905.00. I regretted my purchase and wrote to him the next day, asking for a refund. The stated refund policy on their website is that trips can be refunded if canceled 30 days before the start of travel. Two weeks later, I still haven't received the refund. Against my better judgment, I visited the store for my first class and was talked into buying $5,710 worth of overpriced scuba equipment, before we even entered the pool. I left the store never even getting the $4,638 scuba system I was charged for. I have open disputes with my credit card company to get my money refunded. I have also filed a complaint with the Better Business Bureau. I found online that Rusty Berry and Scuba Schools of America have a bad reputation in the scuba diving community, for disingenuous sales tactics, inflated prices, and questionable refund policies. Visit scubaboard.com and search for Scuba Schools of America. There's a whole thread about them and the negative experience others have had with them. Avoid this store and its owner.

Lance is the best instructor for freediving! I signed up hearing great things and it's all true…read more Despite having scuba training, I had trouble equalizing my ears for dives and worried I wouldn't be able to pass the checkboxes needed to get the certification. Lance let me work with him during part of the lunch break in the open ocean water and I chipped away at it under his coaching. He related to my competitive nature and helped me focus by relaxing (almost like you get better by trying less, if that makes sense in diving). In the last hour of the day, I finally passed and he gave me a high-five/hug in the water for getting it. I still have to work at getting better, but he was so tremendous in learning the skillset and I'd be rooting for him to break the next freediving records!
