Steve who runs the place was super accommodating and went above and beyond to ensure i had the best experience including being flexible with some of my last minute changes. I booked a last minute trip to Belize and NEEDED to go diving there, however it had been a few years since I dived so I knew I needed a refresher course. Searched LA high and low but most courses were only available on a weekend, and I was actually leaving that weekend. Until I contacted Steve--he took my request for a refresher on July 4th weekday, on extremely short notice. We did a 3 hour course in a pool in which we reviewed general knowledge on paper for about an hour, then spent about 2 hours in the pool. Steve was extremely patient, knowledgeable, easy-going and friendly. He took the time to explain all the details that I had become foggy on very thoroughly and made sure to let me know when I wasn't clear on a topic or when I had gotten something wrong--which is exactly what I would want an instructor to do when it comes to a hobby such as scuba. The course was completely worth it as I was able to get comfortable with my skills within the first 20 mins of my Belize dive--and it soon felt like I had never left the water. For the past few years, scuba certification has been on my checklist. I finally said, "You know what, matt, i'm gonna do it." And I did, i did it. I did it with LA Scuba Diving. My instructor was Steve. And this is my story... I asked around to various people at work as to where to go and most of them recommended me to LA Scuba Diving. So I thought, that must be the place to go. I spoke to Steve on the phone and he explained that there will be a classroom session, then a pool dive, and the following weekend we would take a trip to catalina. In catalina, we went to Casino Point, which has a designated protected dive park. That amount of cool stuff in there is unfathomable. I saw a ton of Garibaldi (the CA state fish), baracuda, and a large sting ray to mention a few. There is also a few shipwrecks. The great thing about LA Scuba Diving is that the classes are kept really small. We were a class of three. That is a perfect number for your basic open water. He makes sure that you understand and can perform each task. I had a couple problems with some skills and he takes the time to show you how to improve and we don't move on until you get it down. You don't get that attention with larger classes. Steve goes beyond the PADI requirements of getting your certification and gives his extensive knowledge about anything you wish to learn about sea life or diving etiquette. I had so much fun that a couple months later I went back to LA Scuba Diving for my advanced open water certification. read more

He is very knowledgeable, thorough and exacting, just what you need, to feel secure when learning skills to be safe underwater. Wild. Fun as hell. I booked through LA Scuba Diving cause it was close to my home and seemed like the right place to go for lessons. There is 3 days of scuba diving in total, 1 in a pool as a set of confined dives. And two more in the ocean as a set of open water dives. For our open water dives we took the ferry out to Catalina island and finished up with all of our skills. On the last dive of day three we went down to sixty feet and got see some giant Black Sea Bass that were 5 feet in length. I can strongly recommend LA Scuba Diving Not only did I learn the basic diving set from the instructors I also got to learn the basics of diving as a recreation. I just recently finished my second class with LA Scuba Diving and I will definitely be back for another! The latest course that I took with Steve Millington, my instructor and the owner of LA Scuba Diving, was a GUE Gas Blender Class. What a great class! Steve has a way of taking, what at first glance appeared to be a boat load of information and confusing formulas, and quickly presenting them in a way that made calculations of gas mixes very easy and precise. Not long after some sit down classroom work, we were out at the shop doing calculations and then using those calculations to blend accurate Nitrox and Trimix, what a gas! At the end of last year a buddy, teammate, of mine and I did our GUE Fundamentals class, which was also taught by Steve. This class was very challenging but even more rewarding! We had a lot of student-instructor time for us to fully understand the fundamentals of scuba diving. I'm glad I chose them to get my PADI certification. It felt more of a one on one session even tough we were four in the class. From the lecture, confined water and up to the open water dives our instructor Dwight took his time to answer all our questions whether its about gears, places to dive, safety and open water diver manual. I have always wanted to become a PADI certified open water scuba diver so this class was given to me as a birthday present to use whenever I wanted. I immediately called Steve to ask about the process and when he had availability and was happy to find that the class sizes are small to ensure that the students thoroughly learn their skills. He was also very easy to get in touch with and always called back in a timely manner whenever I left a message. You start off on the first day in a pool to get familiar with all the gear and then go into the ocean for your certification dives. As a part of my class we went to Catalina Island's Dive Park where we reviewed all of our skills while still having an adventure in the kelp beds along with the abundant amount of marine life. The ocean dives were two separate days with the gear provided for you and still a little extra time to enjoy the island. I scheduled a lesson and when I arrived they told me it was never confirmed. However, the day before all I was told was that someone would contact me if anything changes, which they didn't. Then when I tried to reschedule I was ignored and never called/texted back. All I wanted to do was come in a take a lesson and they seemed like a good school but it's obvious that they only want to instruct certain people and instead of being professional about it they just ignore you. Spent August 17-18 and 24-25 with Dwight. This may be long, but it is the perfect review for my experience and is most insightful if you are considering....... The first day was class room time going over the book material. It is important to read and do the homework, and Steve did a great job stressing that. The First day isn't a day to teach you the book, it is to summarize and test and find answers to the questions you had while studying. Dwight made sure that we were well prepared and knew what we were doing on the Official PADI paper side. Second day was in the pool. We were with several other classes that were training for certification in more advanced technique, but we felt like part of the group in no time. The pool was where we learned our elementary skills that broke the ground for "thinking like a fish" as one way to put it. Dwight made sure that we knew how the gear worked and how to maneuver in the water. As we progressed we became more comfortable. Steve even dropped by to make sure we were doing well! The pool session was where I found out that the mouth piece on the rental gear was chaffing my gums, making me clench my jaw and become uncomfortable under water. ***TIP*** this discomfort was solved by buying a mold-able mouth piece (about 30$, worth it, you keep it forever)! They make generic fit ones that swap out with most brands of second stages!!! The fallowing weekend at Catalina was one of the best in my life. The sea life there is phenomenal!!! Too much to take in while certifying!!! Dwight made sure that we knew our stuff while giving us a good amount of sight seeing and experiencing. The second day north of Casino Point was awesome! The crew of divers on the boat were a blast and immediately made us feel like part of a special community! Jules was an amazing dive master and had complete control over the dive operations installing an atmosphere of safety and enforced fun! As an instructor Dwight is 5 stars! His knowledge of the ocean and the physics of scuba is astounding. He has the engineering angle of how to approach a dive and squeeze the most time with the least effort spent. I felt like he had control of every situation and made sure that the weakest students received the instruction and help they needed to confidently dive without him. His passion for diving and teaching compels me to achieve more and gain as much experience as I can. You can feel his love for this sport and IT IS INFECTIOUS! Signed up for the class... got the materials, and then I couldn't make it for the first weekend because I had to go out of town. Steve invited me to his house to do the whole first two days as a private one on one session just to accommodate me and keep the 2nd weekend of dives on schedule. He was patient and taught me my skills well. The dive days were with Dwight. He's a strict but very good dive master. He makes sure you know your skills. After I got certified I was so in love with it, I ponied up and bought my self all the gear that I need to dive now. First, let me say our group of four had an amazing pool training session with Steve Millington. He was fun, very helpful, moved at a good pace, and just made the experience so wonderful for all of us. I can't recommend him enough. I had been looking to do Open Water Certification in the LA Area for a while and finally decided it was time to look into classes. I wanted a provider with a solid record as well as a price that was fair. I began looking and came across Scubahaus, LA Scuba Diving, Eco Dive Center, Ocean Adventures and more. After speaking with many of them on the phone, Steve's flexibility, price, and helpfulness over the phone made choosing LA Scuba Diving a no brainer. We arrived on the morning of July 11 for our pool training at Steve's house. The backyard was perfect and great for our group of four with a nice sized pool, not too small. We first signed some paperwork and then reviewed the online eLearning we had done and took a short quiz. One of our group members struggled with the dive tables so Steve went over them until he understood. We then spent the rest of the day being shown how to use the various scuba equipment, then suiting up and rehearsing a number of techniques in the pool. Despite just being in the pool, everyone in our group had a really enjoyable time much of that due to Steve's good pace, helpful hints and tricks, and overall super friendly manner. Predive/Setup- Steven Millington gave us personal attention to help us get the right gear. He explained the reasons for certain designs, materials, durability, etc for our price point we wanted to spend. Very friendly guy! He answered all our questions and concerns and immediately made me feel welcomed and valued as a customer. This time was spent at his own accord BEFORE classes even started. He had the forethought and planning to avoid crowds the next day. Review/confined water-our assigned instructor was Stephen Mendel, a very knowledgable diving instructor! (you can view his info on the website) Started off great, he was patient with us and made sure we understood the material well. Stephen has a funny sense of humor that helped lighten the mood of the important details to stay safe in the water. He gave us more information and interesting tips/rules/tricks that help you remember important rules for diving, and also a more efficient effective diver. His humor by the way becomes apparent during the open water sessions as well! Hah! Open water dives-what an experience! Stephen absolutely made sure we were safe and comfortable before going into the water. No time wasted, we got to business and I had a blast. Every requirement is reviewed and explained. After the dives Stephen was nice enough to show us around town, we hung out (which he really didn't have to do) and saw the town of Avalon (our dive location in Catalina). He even let us do some extra dives just for fun after we passed all the requirements. I also like the fact that Stephen could impart his knowledge to us, it really doesn't do any good if an instructor has the knowledge but can't pass it to his or her students. thanks for your patience and watchful eye Stephen! ;P Final thoughts- you are not left in cold water.... Even after the class (I took the Open Water Certification) our instructor Stephen offered at his own time to let us tag along as safety divers or join him for fun! He left us such a good impression and great time we all chipped in to buy him lunch. Steven also offered me to tag along with him as dive buddies! I was and still floored at these guys passion and joy in sharing their love of diving. I highly recommend LA Scuba. My good friend recently completed her GUE Recreational 1 course with Steve Millington. She had nothing but great things to say about Steve - he spent a lot of time with her to work with her on her skills so that she can really be confident, and comfortable in the water. He places great emphasis on safety and comfort in the water, critical to enjoyment underwater down the road. His classes are more in-depth, and probably a little longer and more expensive than your typical dive shop class but the investment is well worth it in terms of the quality of the training and your comfort underwater. A friend of mine referred me to LA Scuba Diving. I did my classroom and confined water dives with them (doing the open water referral program). I had a great experience with Steven Millington and Stephen Mendel at LA Scuba diving. I highly recommend the school. One of the things I liked best about it was the small class size (me and one other person). We both got a lot of individual attention in the classroom and in the pool. I was very pleased with the training. The great thing about Steven is he is very low key but also very enthusiastic about diving. I've been considering getting certified for years now and I'm so glad I went with LA Scuba! Steve Millington was able to fit me in on very short notice and made getting through the classroom sections a breeze. Steve clearly has an immense amount of experience that really shines through and puts you at ease. They provide all of your equipment but I would highly recommend buying your own mask and snorkel. Carrie was an amazing instructor and the open water dives in Catalina were sooooo much fun. Although you're completing parts of your certification on each dive Carrie makes sure to include some fun exploration as well. By the end of the second weekend I was more than ready to plan my own dives and felt very comfortable in the water. It was such a great experience that I'm saving up to buy my own equipment and continue my training. I completed the first-half of my PADI referral course with Steve and it was simply the best experience. Given that I was continuing on to Belize to finish my open water dives, Steve made sure that I had the knowledge and confidence to transfer all these skills to a different country. Throughout the two days, one classroom day and one pool dive day, Steve was thorough with his teaching and did not miss a beat. I really liked how he provided a lot of repetition with the material. This helped me make sure that when I got to Belize, I had reminders and tricks from my time with Steve to make me feel secure in my abilities and just relax. My husband and i both have been scuba diving for over 10 years years , I got my open water certification in New York and my husband got his in Oregon and with years not in the water we needed a little tune up . But we didn't want to stop there . We also wanted to get our Advanced Divers license and our nitrox license . I actually found steve via yelp as i wasn't really sure who to use in Los Angeles. My husband usually trusts me to find "good" people so i came across LA scuba divers visited the website and contacted steve right away. My husband and I have extremely busy schedules from work and travel and we needed private training. Steve was able to accommodate our needs no questions asked. Our books came in the mail and three weeks later we were doing our tune up before heading to Catalina's island the following day for our test . Steve took his time with us , we really needed it lol, and was so knowledgeable he taught us stuff about our gears and scuba diving that neither my husband nor i knew. We felt extremely comfortable and we really respects the fact he takes safety very seriously . The following day my husband and I headed down to San Pedro met our dive instructor David and headed to onto the ferry to Catalina Island. David was awesome! He made us feel extremely comfortable in the water , it was very easy , he had a very super friendly Caribbean laid-back attitude. He was also extremely knowledgeable in diving , any question we had he had the answer to . He constantly reminded us to do our pre dive safety checks and when we were under water he checked on us frequently and made sure our PSI were never low . We did 5 dives in total 1 ) peak buoyancy dive 2) wreck dive 3) night dive 4) navigation dive 5) deep dive. With the night dive i was a little nervous as the ocean can be pretty scary at night but David made us super comfortable to the point that in October we are arranging a trip to go lobster hunting with him at night ! All our dives were superb, didn't even feel like we were "testing". The following day after two dives we returned back to Los Angeles exhausted , but we still had to take our written exam for Nitrox. Steve met us at a Starbucks near our house , to make it easier for us. We completed and passed our exams and we have Steve to thank. If it wasn't for his review on Sunday and his knowledge that he gave us it would have been more reading for us to do on our own. He is the best! My boyfriend and I just became certified open water divers through LA Scuba Diving. We had been researching places to get certified because of an approaching trip to Curacao for my brother's wedding. Neither of us had any interest in getting certified, but with the opportunity to go somewhere so tropical, we figured now was a good time as any to conquer our fears. We decided to go with LA Scuba Diving based on the small class sizes and the great yelp reviews. I am SO glad we did. We called up Steve and were able to reserve 2 spots for the following weekend. He seemed genuinely excited for us to join them, which made us more excited! The next day, we got our PADI diver manuals in the mail! Our first day of class (held at Hollywood Divers), we met owner, Steve and our instructor, Dwight. Both were very friendly, experienced, and extremely knowledgeable. Our first confined water dive (held at the San Fernando Regional Pool) was tough for me. Along with my slight fear of diving to begin with, I had trouble trusting the equipment and felt awkward in all the gear - and it's not natural to breathe underwater! Dwight was so patient, even when it took me multiple tries to complete a skill. He was firm and strict about being safe. He made sure we were able to complete every task on our own before moving on. I felt so proud of myself at the end of that day. There was another company doing classes there that day. They started at the same time we did, but had WAY more students. We finished up before they even moved from the shallow pool to the deep pool! It was instantly apparent that small class sizes are the way to go. Aside from valuing my time, there's no way I would have felt comfortable being in that big of a class. The following weekend were our open water dives. Saturday we met in Long Beach and went out on a diving boat (Sundiver Express) to Catalina. The boat was a blast! Jules, our divemaster was a riot. They provided breakfast and grilled up lunch for us (they were even stocked with Vegetarian options!). By the ocean dives, the class was down to just my boyfriend and I! We basically had private lessons with Dwight! I felt more and more comfortable each dive, and I became confident in my abilities. By Sunday (at Casino Point in Catalina), I felt like a pro! We finished our last certification dive and Dwight took us for another 'fun' dive. Since class was officially complete and we were certified divers, he brought his underwater camera and took pictures of us - a great memento to have! I am now hooked! I am SO excited about the whole process, especially being a person who started out with a pretty healthy fear of the whole thing. I am now so confident that I am safe and knowledgeable enough to continue to dive with him! I cannot more highly recommend LA Scuba Diving and Steve Millington! I learned more than I thought possible and felt that a whole new world was opened to me. I just got back from the open water dives on Catalina Island. It was fantastic! Although I am very confident in the ocean, I was very timid getting in with all that gear! Steve and his instructors gave me confidence. Their knowledge and way of explaining all of the information and usages allowed me to trust them and take the plunge (wink wink)! At every step of the process, they were checking in with me, asking what my concerns were, answering all of my (many) questions, addressing any worries, and reviewing any information I wanted to go over again countless times. I had an awesome experience with Steve and LA Scuba Diving. Steve was able to fit me into the schedule and make it all happen, despite the fact that I only had two weekends until my trip to Australia. I did the coursework online and the pool dives at Steve's house. He provided all the equipment. I felt very comfortable with his approach, he is very confidence inspiring. The following weekend I went diving in Catalina to complete the course. On Saturday, we did two beach dives from the Catalina dive park, then Sunday we dove off a boat.
