Excellent care and a professional, welcoming atmosphere. The staff were kind and attentive, and the dermatologist took time to listen and explain everything clearly. The office was clean and modern. I felt well taken care of highly recommend!

Pit in chest after steroid injection. Surrounding bumps are steatocystomas under the skin. Now they're much worse and erupt thru the skin.

I've thought long and hard about whether to write this review for the past 3.5 years, and after all these years of self-gaslighting I realized that I needed to share my story. This is something that I actually think about each and every single day--no exaggeration--and I am truly full of regret. I was considering Accutane because I get painful cystic acne pretty much anywhere on my body, and I was tired of having to blot/wipe my extremely oily T-zone every hour. When I asked Dr. Krishnan whether any of her past Accutane patients had any complaints at all, *** she flat out said NOPE, none at all *** At the time, I figured wow this is great, she's probably seen hundreds of patients through Accutane, this is good validation. Everything was pretty smooth and our monthly checkins were a breeze. However, for my last 2 months, Dr. Krishnan decided to bump my dosage to 80 mg/day, saying it would prevent recurrence. I put my trust in her again, but shortly after I finished was the beginning of the hell that I've only now begun to accept. And wasn't until much later that I realized that she OVERDOSED ME, that the medical literature clearly recommends against going past the cumulative dose threshold. Shocked that she doesn't know this. My beautiful, super thick (admittedly very oily), wavy, healthy hair began falling out in clumps. Prior to this I would always complain about how thick and unmanageable my hair was, and I'd get it thinned out every time I went for a haircut. Barbers would ask me what hair product I use but I honestly didn't use or need hair product because my hair naturally behaved as if it always had hair product in it! But now, my hair would not stop falling out, and the individual strands themselves became super thin, dry, and weak. After a year of this daily trauma, my hair loss seemed to slow to normal shedding, but the damage had already been done and by then I had lost about HALF of my hair density. There was nothing genetic or natural about this. This happened to the hair *everywhere*, including armpit, pubic, legs, etc.--everywhere. That doesn't just naturally happen so suddenly in the span of a year. When I asked Dr. Krishnan what to do, she recommended Rogaine. No empathy whatsoever for the trauma I was experiencing, and the unspoken expectation was that woops something went wrong well I guess you can take this new drug now, twice daily for the rest of your life, not to mention that it's known for an intense initial shedding period, which ofc she didn't mention. As if that wasn't traumatizing enough, my skin everywhere (and lips) became SUPER dry and I started getting eczema and chapped lips when I literally never had them before. I also didn't know how blessed I was to have never needed chapstick. It honestly felt like my skin had aged 10 years, just like that. I've spent years finding the right skin & hair products and regimens that work best for me and the damage has been so traumatic that I'm finding myself starting that journey all over again. I need completely different products now that my skin and hair have been permanently damaged and changed. Also, my vision is notably worse, my night vision is terrible now, my eyes are considerably drier and itchier, and I see halos around every light source. These are not uncommon side effects but it's yet another thing she failed to mention. Finally, the last reason I went on Accutane was for my steatocystomas--think many cysts popping up everywhere under the skin and staying permanently. They were benign and never hurt, so it was purely an aesthetic issue for me. Now, they're much, much worse. Every time a new one comes up, instead of staying small and under the skin, it would ERUPT through the skin. It's very painful and takes forever to heal. Not only that, it never heals completely, instead leaving dark scars and indentations. Trying to be proactive about the indentations, the next time one erupted through my skin, I consulted Dr. Krishnan and she advised steroid injections, which we did, even though they were a little expensive. At first I was pleasantly surprised since it significantly reduced the span of the most painful part, but then I ended up with an indentation in my chest where she did the injection (see pic) which is still there to this day. Again, like clockwork, she recommended yet another treatment, this time with very strong tri-chloroacetic acid (TCA). At this point I figured, if every procedure I've done here has ended disastrously, why keep making things worse? And it was only after I asked some detailed questions about the procedure that she agreed that it might make it worse. To her credit, unlike with the steroid injections, she offered the acid treatment free of charge, but I decided not to keep making things worse and give my body a break. Honestly Dr. Krishnan will probably deliver great results for you for something basic, but don't go here for Accutane, any kinds of cysts, or specialized/advanced care.

Does your office offer subcision for acne scars?

Yes, our dermatologists do offer subcision treatment for acne scars, and may recommend multiple treatments in combination with resurfacing lasers. If you're interested in learning more, please schedule a consultation appointment.

Do you perform cortisone injections for cystic acne? What is the approximate price range?

We do offer cortisone injections for cystic acne. Without insurance the injection is $49 out of pocket + consultation ($150 for new patients). If we are in-network with your insurance, the cost would depend on your insurance benefit coverage.

Does your services include sebaceous cyst removal?

Yes we do perform cyst removals. We require an initial consultation, and surgery will need to scheduled on a separate date.

    Is there parking nearby? Thanks!

Hi Marybeth, the closest parking garage is Mason O'Farrell garage which is $9 per hour.

Does she do dark circle laser or any treatment?

We treat patients with dark circles using a variety of treatments, including lasers. The specific treatment plann depends on location skin type, age and a number other factors that can be assessed by the doctor in a consultation. Feel free to call…

Instructions were given, was prescribed a few things, shot was given and then asked for a follow up. Was out the consultation room in less than 10 minutes. What I didn't have a good experience with is the company's practice and lack of professionalism when it comes to billing and insurance / credit card retention. I gave them my insurance information 5x and they still did not keep my in-network insurance on file until I asked them to charge my $40 copay the afternoon of my visit after I realized that there's definitely a copay for that visit. I called 4x before someone answered. During the call to pay my copay, it turns out the front desk person I met did not put my information in despite saying she did. What she did keep was my credit card information that they refuse to delete despite me never signing any form to justify it. This practice will try to make you sign a form that forces you to keep a payment card on file, have it charged without notification when there is a bill and forgo your right to dispute the charge if there's a discrepancy in billing. I shared the image of the form below. The front desk personnel will also hound you if you don't put your personal address and ssn on the forms. I gave them my address but the fd still refused to acknowledged that I wrote it down. I generally have payment cards stored for copayments at other practices. However, I have never had practice (or worked at a practice) that has these terms and conditions. It feels almost predatory and extremely insensitive. I understand when bills are due they are due. However, not saving my insurance information when I gave it multiple times, refusing to acknowledge I had filled the health forms online and even written down my address. Is just terrible practice as someone who also works in the medical field. I even emailed the team and offered them to submit the insurance claim myself just to ensure that it does get billed to them first. I even asked for a patient ledger once it's done cause I need to know my claim gets billed correctly. Furthermore, they do store you whole card information on their computer system and not an secure off-site institution as they claim, cause the FD on the phone confirming my copay was able to repeat the card number from front to back. Trust me this is not standard practice at medical offices or even businesses. At most the only card info a business would have is the last 4 digits of the card and it's expiration. Not the whole card's information I did not sign anything (their green agreement policy) that authorizes them to charge my card without my consent or say so cause I am not tardy on bills. (If I was why would I called 3 hours later to pay my copay immediately) But treating every new or existing patient like they are out for free service gives the impression that it's money first before your health by a long-shot. Most practices I've been to are not like this The whole fiasco about not wanting to save my insurance so they bill me directly instead cemented my experience at this practice. The doctor may be nice but the billing system and practice is definitely flawed. It's almost like they operate more like a beauty spa/ clinic than an actual medical facility for people with skin conditions. The administrative staff seem unwilling to actually do their role besides pushing you to fill out the green agreement form (pictured below), give card information and your address to ensure they can bill you instead and then send you to collections. Everything but sending the claim to insurance it seems. Definitely won't be back and will follow up to ensure they do send my claims, and would not recommend this practice to any patient needing care without the administrative stress.

They are both recommended by another patient who wrote a critical Yelp review of Andrea Austin. I reached out to her through Yelp because she wrote that her doctor told her that half of his patients with neurogenic rosacea are a result of laser damage, and I suspected that it was my case as well.  Dr. Berger at UCSF confirmed that the dense tissue in my cheeks is facial edema caused by Vbeam (Mary Krempa did so many passes with a high setting meant for blood vessels next to my nose on my delicate cheeks; also, I don't think my skin could tolerate 6 Vbeam in such a short period of time). As a result, I now have neurogenic rosacea, which I never had before seeing Andrea Austin. I hardly had any rosacea symptoms even before I saw Andrea Austin (no flushing, no pain, or nothing really, just slight pinkness on my cheeks, never had to worry about the heat or coldness or whatever).   As I wrote in my previous review, I saw Andrea Austin three times after the botched Vbeam. She STILL recommended to continue Vbeam during the two appts AFTER the botched treatment, and recommended me a hydro facial after learning that I would not do any more laser at the 3rd last appt.  I saw seven other reputable dermatologists between June 2024 and December 2025 because I was determined to find out what had happened to my face. All of them acknowledged the dense tissue (diagnosed as facial edema by Dr. Berger, Dr. MacGregor --my current derm, and Dr. Lewis), and almost all of them are very sympathetic to me about what had happened to my cheeks, and they all warned me to be extremely careful with my skin.  I also reached out to Andrea Austin through the online portal after seeing a PR reply to my previous Yelp review last year, and she literally messaged me that what I have now is NOT a result of the laser under her care, and she suggested a different skin condition, which was flatly denied by Dr. Berger.  I decided to share my horrendous experience so that other people who have very sensitive skin will think twice before they choose to go BACD. Having pain and discomfort in my cheeks and not knowing what happened to my face destroyed my mental health. Even after 2 years, I can still pinch and move the dense tissue under my cheeks, which I never had before Andrea Austin. I ended up taking 2 months+ off from work, as I no longer could function due to the extreme anxiety and insomnia caused by the harm Andrea Austin and Mary Krempa inflicted on me. I never experienced insomnia or mental illnesses in my whole life until THIS. Dr. Berger told me that the nerve damage could last 7-10 years, and he told me that even he couldn't tell exactly when my skin would be back to normal. He told me the best is not to disturb the damaged nerves on my cheeks. So, please be very careful if you have laser treatment at BACD. Dr. Berger trained most of the current derms at UCSF, and he was even the interim chair of the dermatology dept at UCSF (there are 70+ derms there). He was extremely kind and knowledgeable, and took so much time to explain and answer all my questions. The experience was a stark contrast to Andrea Austin, who refused to take any responsibility for what they had done to my face. Both my current derm, Dr. MacGregor, and Dr. Lewis at Stanford highly think of Dr. Berger, and Dr. Lewis even suggested sending Dr. Berger's notes to Andrea.  I blindly trusted Andrea Austin based on my positive previous experience with Dr. Welsh, and I am paying a hefty price for the biggest mistake of my life. Andrea Austin is so sure of herself (if you see her, you will know what I mean), but what she did to me is BEYOND unethical and comprehensible. Had I continued to listen to her, she would have further destroyed and damaged my skin.  If you decide to go to Andrea Austin, you MUST keep in mind that you will never get any help from this practice when things go wrong, no matter what PR employees say.
