Tracy & Travis opened up their doors late fall of 2019 and were only open for a few months before COVID-19 struck. I love and appreciate how they adapted and created DIY kits that you can take home and enjoy socially distant and in the comfort of your Casa. It was super easy to order my kit ahead of time and when I picked it up masks were worn and everything by their team. I loved doing the kits in the comfort of my own home. Everything was packaged and labeled nicely. I enjoyed the butch paper wrapping since I could use that as my painting station and not ruin my furniture. All the paints were packaged individually, came with a set of sponge brushes, a disposable apron (yes please!), and of course the custom stencil I chose. You can actually choose up to three paint colors and they have a wide variety of stencils and projects to choose from. Currently during COVID-19 you can book a private experience for a small group of folks and it's BYOB!

I picked up my kit a few days later and that was quick and easy as well. I selected the classic gray stained wood and must admit I was disappointed in how it looked. The stain didn't appear to take on most of the wood. I wouldn't have been happy putting my stencil directly on top of the wood, so I painted the wood white first. You basically paint on top of the provided stencil and then pull the stencil off. It was challenging because the smaller pieces took forever to pull up. I literally broke a sweat lol! My takeaway from that is to pick a pattern that isn't so complex the next time. Overall, I was pleased with my finished product. I just wish it had the classic gray background.

I…read morehave been fascinated by glass blowing after first being introduced to it a few years back in Italy, and I always tend to seek out new galleries if a city I visit has one. With that said, this studio has a spectacular shop filled with glass work from various local artists who have blown the glass on site. You can either take in the breathtaking artwork or admire one of the live classes in the back for free! Now to participate in some of the classes, it does come with a fee, but assuming from the professional artwork around and the kind staff, I could not see how it would not be a win win. I cannot comment on the cost for the classes, as I forgot to ask, but judging from the many reviews, it sounds like they have quite a few. I'd suggest visiting their website and or calling ahead and chatting with some of the wonderful employees behind the counter! Make sure to add this to your bucket list while in New Orleans if its up your alley as it will not disappoint!

Though the studio is old, each class provides EVERYTHING you need to practice on the wheel - clay, tools, aprons, etc. You have to pay extra per piece you want to fire and we didn't get free reign with glazes and trimming (the instructors do it for you). But I didn't mind for the price, and it makes it easier for those who take the class to spend it entirely on honing in the art of throwing. Overall a great start for beginners who have always wanted to try ceramics! They really create a safe space for you to mess up and learn. Taught by experienced instructors, Byrdie's has reasonable membership prices as well!

The value is incredible (ie, I don't mean shitty American "cheese" and limp iceberg lettuce-cheap. I deserve better than that. *You* deserve better than that). Those tomatoes on there are probably heirloom and for greens, we're talking arugula. The specialty veg sandwich has an avocado spread that's out of this world divine delicious and the other day, I was introduced to the joys of buttermilk cheese sprinkled on top. They make their own *bread* for god's sake... If you don't like red onions or red pepper, Chris will gladly substitute you with something else. And whatever the ingredient, there's just the right amount of everything perfectly combined to make a sandwich into an edible piece of art. OK, so the price for this incredible sandwich that I still can't stop thinking about and have had to have twice in less than a week when I normally don't eat lunch out? FIVE FUCKING DOLLARS! Make that four with the Yelp Check-In offer. I shit you not. And yes, I'm cursing up a motherfuckingstorm because I feel like I've discovered something not many people know about (with the exception of Yelptern, Emily A, who introduced me to the joys of Byrdie's sandwiches just recently). And just so you know I mean business. I consider this place to be really off the grid when it comes to food. For the love of a good sandwich, stop in immediately and do yourself a favor with one of these incredible concoctions. See a fantastic art installation that a righteous feline might be guarding along the way... One other thing: I haven't tried it yet, but you should probably also know there's a homemade lavender bread with homemade strawberry jam, along with other pastries made in-house.
