Wife loved the hair coloring and trims she gets. She visits them every-time we are in town

In order to be certain with the outcome, I've waited for 2 weeks, and here is the review. I would have never found Artistic Hair Design and the hairdresser/stylist Wayne, on my own, or through yelp (with zero photo and a few reviews). Since being new to LA, and it has been 5 months without any trim, I randomly asked the first girl I saw with the hairstyle I like (at zinc cafe). She was surprised but kind enough to share the contact number. "It's not exactly a fancy salon, but Wayne is really good." I took her word and made the same day reservation with Wayne. The salon is indeed not fancy. I decided to discuss with Wayne about the style I wished for, before sitting down. The discussion began in English and drifted into Chinese (with [heated] back-n-forth explanation from both sides). I settled with Wayne's "Oh. Trust me. I will make it pretty." $30 (long hair, incl. wash, cut, blow dry, excl. tips) is more than satisfying. The lady gently washed the hair and Wayne worked his magic. (Yes, as mentioned in other reviews, it also turned out a couple of inches shorter, but better than I wanted.) There are few advice I would say if anyone is interested/curious, - state which style is a definite no-no, and leave the rest to Wayne. - the idea length to tell Wayne is a few inches longer than your expectation. - English, Mandarin, Vietnamese (and maybe even Cantonese). I don't normally review salons, but I have to let people know how great Artistic Hair Design is. There are two stylists there, and they have a regular following (of which I'm one). I have been going to see May for years. As a guy, I'm not really into hanging out at the salon, but they at least make it comfortable. I always end up having a fun conversation as I'm getting my hair cut. She really gets to know her customers--and I appreciate that differentiation over the normal haircut mills. The salon is nice and clean. Nothing too extravagant. The prices are reasonable. I'll be the first to admit that I'm not an expert in women's hair trends, but judging from the reviews and the other regular customers I always run into, they're doing something right! I find that it's best to call ahead for an appointment. They're certainly accommodating when you walk in, but sometimes you have to wait a while because there are other people with that same idea. read more

My coworker recommended me to Wayne for a haircut. The studio is clean. Wayne is very friendly and patient. He customized my hair based on the shape of my face. The result is great and l'll be back again! It's by appointment only due to the current situation. They can only have one customer in there at a time so I got to own the whole place to myself haha. read more

Long overdue review from a year ago! I'm very picky with my hair and rarely ever go back to the same place twice. I've tried high end to mid-range salons all over the bay and I must say that the haircut I got at Artistic Hair Design by Wayne was the second best haircut I've ever received in my life. Second best as in my second time, not in terms of ranking. The first time I loved my haircut was years ago at Hair.com in Milpitas, but Joe, the owner, had horrible time management skills. I had an appointment and he made me wait an hour. No matter how great the haircut was, I vowed never to go back. I was in LA looking on Yelp for a good hair salon and since it was last minute (knowing that the popular places would already be booked), I chose Artistic Hair Design. I basically made a gamble because this place has absolutely no photos and at the time, only around 6 or 7 reviews. I called and made an appointment for that day. The salon itself is pretty old looking and it seemed to be in a kind of janky area of Alhambra. There was a large parking lot in the back. Wayne was very friendly and honest about what would suit me. I mean, there are many hair stylists out there that will give you advice, but not many do an excellent job on what they tell you you should have. I usually thin out my hair and get layers all over with a V shape in the back along with cutting my bangs. Wayne did everything so perfectly. He told me whoever cut my hair prior to him did not do a good job on the layers and knew exactly where to cut my bangs up to so it would look natural. You know those haircuts that only look good the day of, and then the day after it looks crappy? That did not happen here. He was also very talkative and we conversed in Cantonese, although I'm pretty sure he also speaks Vietnamese. My haircut was about $30 I believe, excluding tip. I usually have pretty long hair a little past my chest. I'm definitely coming back here the next time I need a haircut and am in SoCal. Thank you Wayne :D. read more

I heard about this hair salon from my friend so I thought about coming here with my best friend because she needed a haircut. This place looks like a regular hair salon from the outside but the interior looked clean and nice, and the atmosphere was very welcoming. :) I liked the hair cut that they gave my friend because it was very fashionable at a reasonable price. Because of this I have to created my yelp acct for this review. This is piss me off! This guy is good hair cutter but when he cut don't talk to him too much. He need to concentrated to do on his job. I saw couple of time he cut other customer at the end they always complain to short or too long. If you want he cut your hair the way you want explain and serious to tell him to let him know you are very serious about your hair style. good for gamma style. He always rush to the next customer. Please, uncle take your time if you good customer are willing to wait for you. If you rush for next end up bad job is customer last time no return. Cheap! First of all, I don't understand why this place have such have a high rating. I was recommended this place by my mother whose co-worker's daughter had came here to donate her hair. I initially wanted to go to another salon, but because I heard that this man, Wayne, had experienced how to cut hair for donation, I decided to go here after looking at the yelp reviews. Upon entering this place, I was with my sister and my mother, who was happily greeted by Wayne. Wayne was the only one working on that Sunday I came (on Easter). He was currently perming another customer's hair before I came in. He talked to us while working with the lady's hair (keep in mind that he was talking to us while working on another customer, this information will be essential as you continue to read). Now, when it was my turn to get the cut, he was very pushy. My mother told him that I am going to donate my hair, and Wayne was okay with it. The thing is, Wayne talks like he is very knowledgeable, but he fails to show it. FIRST OF ALL, Wayne, not once have he combed my hair before cutting it. Because I want to donate my hair, Wayne ALSO did not measure or even bothered to ask how long did I want to donate. SECONDLY, Wayne went straight to cutting. He did explain that gathering the hair in one bundle to cut is very damaging to the hair, which I can see why. However, I expected him to tie my hair individually in small bundles. He did not. He went straight and cut my hair, estimating each hair length, then putting it on the table. The problem is, my hair was just washed (I washed it at home) and it was all in knots AND my hair was a V-shaped, so the lengths differs. THIS mistake may result my hair to be rejected when I donated. THIRDLY, I showed him a couple of pictures what I wanted. Specifically, a lob (aka. Long Bob). Because I wanted Wayne to see what I want, he only looked at it for a second. Not two, but one second. He was like "yeah, yeah I know." He asked if I wanted layers, and I hesitated, but he explained that the picture I showed had layers. I decided to trust him and yes "sure, I want long layers, not too much." After chopping most of my hair length, I liked the length I had. However, he works fast. He did not use scissors, he used a razor. (He speaks about how he cuts his customer's hair so its healthy, but does he not know that razors actually causes more damage to the hair?). When another customer walked in because it was time for her appointment, he began to greet her and also TALK TO HER. Just like what he did to my family when we walked in, he began to talk to the other customer AND speeds up his process in cutting my hair. He cuts it above my shoulder, which is it not what I asked for. He ALSO takes his eyes AWAY from my head as he cuts. That resulted my unevenness on my hair. He did not follow my instructions and my picture. When he finished cutting, I noticed that he knew my hair was uneven, and he did not bother to fix it with scissors. He gave me 3 layers, where 75% of my hair is basically my bangs. The picture of the lob I showed Wayne was short in the back and gradually longer in the front. Instead, my hair is no where near my shoulder, and my hair is shorter on front and longer in the back. My left side is about 0.5 inches shorter than my right. AND my hair is very uneven, where a lot of hair is longer than the others all around. The hair cut I wanted was very simplistic, but yet he still failed to cut it. The price is not worth it. My original length of hair was all the way down to my buttocks. For the same haircut I feared of getting again was $30, where I could get for only $10. Honestly, if you don't want to follow the picture I want to have, and mess it up, at least cut my hair so its even on both sides.. Moral of the story: DO NOT COME HERE. read more

He is also very knowledgeable about what goes well with your specific hair type/growth. Highly recommended. Only thing is that he doesn't wash your hair, someone else does. My first time here and was kinda hesitant that I will get the same result from previous hair cuts and color from different salons, but Wayne did a very good job in color,highlights and cut...customer service is a plus..very accommodating and although a lot of customers are waiting,Wayne took his time to cut my hair and style it.
