Sadly, I need to update my original review. This place is completely disorganized and it's a shame. It appears to have gone way down hill compared to how I recall originally experiencing this place. Please DON'T book an event here. The people in charge won't even tell you how many of your tickets are being sold, so it's IMPOSSIBLE to plan and get a head count, and a head count is so important in the days leading up to an event. This place will even book another event ON THE SAME DATE as your event, without even talking to you! They don't reply to emails, and it's pure luck if you can get anyone on the phone during regular business hours. Little to no security here. I wouldn't park here. Parking spaces are lacking overall anyways. Don't give this place your money. Look somewhere else. It's sad because this place had magic. Now, it's just slowly going to die, if the people in charge keep operating like they are. P.S. Parts, (maybe all of the place?) has mold spores in the air. If you are allergic to mold, please don't go here. I know someone who got badly sick from this place due to mold exposure over the weekend. Mold is bad for you even if you're not allergice to it. Just another reason to steer clear of this place! read more

A one of a kind contemporary art gallery and supporting a local non-profit is a definite win win. I'm amazed with the array of sculptures and 2D artworks Artisan had on display. These make for fun photos too. Not only does Artisan Works have art on the walls but they have some displayed on the ceilings!! This is my second visit and it was even better than the introduction. Every single blank space is covered with art. From mobiles hanging from the ceiling wooden sculpture photos paintings glass work, seriously everything imaginable. I loved the Kodak room rich with Rochester history. And the fire house second level has a seating area that allows you to take in the ceiling art. My friend really loved the Wright House rendition too. Stop in Friday to Sunday if you're not a member. read more

If I could give zero stars, I would. This is just my experience as a wedding reception guest. For starters, the place seemed a bit disorganized and as if they were "surprised" to see us coming to the reception. Kind of weird... The main issue though is that they have ZERO security in the parking lots. Multiple cars were stolen while we were there, and the place was less than helpful with their lack of security and cameras. If you're going to have an establishment in that part of town that has evening events, security cameras should be a minimum. If they can afford all of that ugly art, they should be able to afford security. Needless to say, we will never be going back and I will never suggest this place to any friends, family, or acquaintances. We will enjoy our visual art elsewhere. read more

Walking into Artisan Works is IMPRESSIVE - no matter what reason you might be walking in for! A gallery walk, a wedding, or a gala event, AW does it all and does it with flair. In my most recent visit, I was able to get a little sneak peak at the car museum (SO cool!!!) they have hiding in their back space. This is only available by tour, but if you get the chance I would highly recommend checking this out. Absolutely incredible. The entire staff, from events to front of house to the ownership, is so passionate about their work. It shows in the curated nature of your experience, and the care they've taken in making the space special. Delight your senses and stop by! This is a great spot to take out of towners, as I think it really captures the essence of Rochester. A little zaney/hectic, but there's a place for everything and all falls beautifully into place. What a funky place- a mixture of venue for dances/meetings/conferences amidst a mildly chaotic spread of art, borderline hoarding mania, and yet tastefully collection of cars, spoons, furniture etc. It is certainly worth your perusing for those who want an overwhelming view to the senses. I liked this kind of art gallery bc I love artwork set in a background, with context, other works, to tell a story. Come here if you are into the art scene, the funky and eccentric, and the interesting. If you run into the owner and get a chance to speak to him about his story, you will not be disappointed over the interesting tale, economics of running this massive place, and the how he has obtained his collection over the years. They sometimes hold free tours if you look up what they are showcasing. Here are the main attractions for those who want a quick overview: 1. Antique and Classic Cars- pretty respectable car collection that the owner spent waiting for years sometimes for an owner to surrender the car. 2. Stuffed animals- that's right. real furs of rhinos, elephants, fur cats, etc that the owner somehow obtained. 3. Great place for wedding/dance. I heard prom is thrown in some of these places- feels almost museum/back to the future/stranger things/80's vintage feel. I'm not gonna lie- I would crash the prom of high school that hosts it here b/c it's an excelent palce to party and make conversation about so much stimuli. 4. Hoarders' Psychology- I swear, there are camera, spoon, wooden carvings, etc collections that one must wonder about how a hoarder goes about collecting some of this stuff. There are also collections by the same artist- one guy carved giant versions of pencil sharpeners, tooth brushes, etc. 5. Eccentric musings- That's right, if you just want a bizarre, interesting venue to see a lot of STUFF, then this is the place to go that takes away the stiff feeling of a white wall museum but not too messy to where it's a garage sale. Artisan Works is a really interesting art and event space. There is an $15 admission fee, so if you visit be sure to do the tour so you can see the whole kit and caboodle. Otherwise, you are limited to only a few spaces. if you do the tour, be prepared to do a lot of walking. So wear comfy shoes! The owner/co-founder Louis Perticone leads the tour and he covers a good amount of history and information. They also have a huge room in the back for collector cars which is fun to see. A great place to have events and social events. Each room has a theme, so there's a room for everyone depending on the event. It's definitely an older warehouse building, so there are a lot of different musty smells. If you are sensitive to dust and damp smells, this might not be the place for you. There is plenty of parking outside. read more

One of my favorite places, this review is long overdue. Multiple times while visiting Rochester I had the thought that I would love it if the business I was visiting was in NYC before instantly realizing we would ruin it, and this is certainly one of those places. It's a giant warehouse filled with art. Beautiful, eclectic, whimsical art that covers every available inch of space. And they hold events! The night I was there they were holding a firemens ball. I know someone else who'd like to....well, we'll just let that one go unsaid, yeah? Paintings, mixed media photography, sculpture, themed rooms, neon, figurines, toys, poetry, funky furniture, medical equipment, games, instruments, stained glass- you name this place probably has it somewhere, along with a few odds and ends you hadn't even thought of. It's so much fun to spend hours here roaming through it all. How they fit it all together in a cohesive, natural, aesthetically pleasing way is art in and of itself. And the staff are the happiest people, they clearly love the space. Worth visiting if you're in the area, and definitely worth coming out of your way for. read more

Love artisan works! Every time you go it's a different experience. There's so much to take in throughout the different rooms. There's also a couple rooms that have games like pool or shuffle board. It's quite a versatile experience, u can book for events, go with family or have a decently intimate date experience. There's lots of unique art to spark conversation. Its a pretty large space also so you could spend a small amount of time to the whole day depending on how much you wanted to analyze, think and discuss everything. Strongly recommend. read more

I got married here. Now, I don't have much to compare the experience to since this is my only marriage thus far (give it a couple months, I can tell she's already getting sick of me), but we couldn't have been happier with the venue itself. First and foremost, it is absolutely unique. I'm not talking unique as in it's like a lot of other wedding halls, only their wallpaper was designed just for them. I'm talking unique as in EVERY INCH of this place is covered in original artwork; it is almost overwhelmingly vibrant, somewhat magical, and full of surprises. This is a place that people visit for its own merits, not just when someone in their family decides to drag everyone to Rochester to witness their nuptials. Also, I can pretty much guarantee that it's the only wedding venue around that will feature a sculpture of a naked woman riding a bear.* That last part might make you a bit hesitant, and to be sure, in a massive, high-ceilinged warehouse filled with mostly modern art, there are going to be a few things you might not like. If your Great-Aunt Mabel has a weak heart and is easily shocked by nudity and gigantic animal sculptures, perhaps Artisan Works is not for you.** If you do decide Artisan Works is your spot though, I can report that the staff is excellent. We had a few snags (as I'm sure all weddings do), but overall Victoria and her team are pleasant to work with, and quite competent. (We weren't enamored with the in-house caterer, but that's a personal choice you'll have to make.) Weddings are tough. You have to make a lot of decisions, and that's annoying even without your future bride insisting that everyone one of them matters. The venue is one of those decisions that ACTUALLY matters though, and if, like me, your main concern is that your guests have a good time...it's nice to pick a place that gives them something else to look at when they get bored with you. Also, booze. You should give them booze. ______________ *It's entirely possible that this was the deciding factor when we chose this place over a nearby winery. **Then again, Mabel's always been kind of a bitch, and maybe you don't want to invite her teetotaling ass to the party anyway. read more

I had not been to the Artisan Works in a few years and I forgot what a funky place it is. I attended a networking event the other night and the "banquet" space is much improved from years ago. It is much bigger and well laid out with the addition of the doors that open up on the one side. This is one of the most unique event spaces in town. I love the truly creative art that lines the walls, floors, and ceilings. I did not get a chance to wander through the whole place but if that has not changed it is overwhelming how much is crammed in this complex. I remember getting lost it is so vast. This place is a "find" to be sure. I came here for a group luncheon and tour. (Our lunch was very tasty) This place is MASSIVE.. been around for over 20 plus years and the story on how this came to be is just wow. The owner pays the artist of all of their catalog of art. They own most of if not all of the buildings that make this place a just wow. They have a membership and are open Friday-Sunday for tours. You can have events like weddings, parties and the like here. If you do have an event here they have an in-house caterer and they have many different rooms to have an event in. Different prices as well for the amount of people you would have. Every square inch has something to look at and that's what makes it very cool. Since the place is very large it can be a little chilly and to get to other parts of the complex you will need to take a quick walk outside. If you are not from the area you might get confused on how get in, you basically go in by the CVS parking lot and there is a sign and you drive down to the back. (Or call in and ask for proper directions or check the website.) It's a cool spot glad I finally got to check this place out. They have a dedicated parking lot. Check out this local gem. read more

We decided on a chilly day to go and explore artisan works! Wow! This place is a hidden gem in Rochester! We used our student ID for a discount on a Saturday afternoon! It was quiet and we were able to stroll around freely. They were setting up for a wedding and all I could think was "wow! It would be so fun to be a guest here" we didn't have any trouble finding parking as it was around 4 and they had many spots reserved for artisan parking customers only along the side. There are different rooms and hallways with the most intriguing, bizarre pieces. It made me really appreciate people's creativity. There is stuff literally everywhere so be sure to take your time and visit rooms once or twice! There are elephants, giraffes, lions, and so much more hidden in this huge place! I plan on taking some friends and family who visit from out of town here! It is a unique experience! They are very open to allowing people to take photos, but remember not to touch the art/pieces! And remember, look up! There's so many pieces cascading from the ceiling! Incredible read more

Artisanworks wins my vote for most unique and inspiring museum in Rochester. It's really a remarkable place that you can go to again and again and still notice new things every time. Artwork fills the mammoth building from the floors to the ceilings in an awe-inspiring trip that is sure to entertain and dazzle all visitors, especially the first time. Note that the hours are limited - only open on Friday, Saturday and Sunday. The concept of artwork being created and shown at Artisanworks is something I love and being privy to some of the work rooms and studios of local artists is an interesting treat. I adore the theme rooms there - the movie theater, Marilyn Monroe tribute room, Fireman's tribute room, beer collector's room, Frank Lloyd Wright room - all of it is planned with stunning attention to detail. The exhibits are put together with just the right amount of comic relief, creativity and polish. You have to have an eccentric sense of humor to "get" some of them, but that makes the place all the more unique. I never feel rushed at Artisanworks. I can spent anywhere from an hour to three hours there, just hanging out and enjoying being a part of the creative process. I've even taken a notebook in there and sat in one of the rooms to get some inspiration myself. It's never felt weird, strange or unwelcome. It's really the perfect place for artistic inspiration. I've subtracted a star simply because the place has taken a hit over the past few years - the hours have condensed and they've closed the most awesome part of it -- the upstairs exhibits and outdoor patio!! Those were the best parts of Artisanworks in the past, and it's a real shame that they are no more. The staff tell me that this is due to regulations set forth by the city and this is disappointing to me. Locals and visitors should support artistic endeavors like Artisanworks. While the place seems to thrive mostly on hosting events and its private donors, it would be nice to see the museum be more accessible to the general public with expanded hours and utilization of all its space. I've been to Artisan Works once when I was doing a presentation on Frank Lloyd Wright and I had heard about the room they had with recreations of some of his furniture. I checked the website, got the hours and headed out. After I found the place I walked up to what looked like an entrance and tried the door, it was locked despite it being a time when the website said it was supposed to be open. I started to walk away discouraged when I heard the door behind me open and this nice elderly man asked me what I wanted. I said I wanted to go in and he told me they were closed and the website hadn't been updated yet. I told him about wanting to see the Wright room and why and he did a check to see no one was looking and then said "Follow me but be quiet". This guy became my favorite person in the world, he led me straight to the Wright room and let me take some pictures. As I'm going around the room he was talking about Wright and his works, more great stuff for my presentation. That guy was great and the Wright room is certainly worth a look if you can't get to Buffalo to see the Darwin Martin House. I've always wanted to go back and check out the rest of the warehouse, what I passed looked really great. read more

I went here once for a school-related event and had a good time. The food and service were good, and the art was...unique. Not exactly a MOMA, but if you're looking for something different and artsy, it does the trick. Another plus is ample parking compared to similar venues that are further downtown (*psst, psst* although I'd probably recommend a few of those other venues in terms of overall experience). Also their seating capacity is excellent compared to other places like this in the area. read more

Had an amazing time at the Rochester Cocktail Revival event thanks to our awesome Elite leadership here in Rochester. This place is an amazing gallery/museum/ venue for really any occasion and anyone will enjoy all it has to offer. The theme was Oceans '11, the original from the 60's and they went all out. From a casino room, aerial performers, a movie room showing the original Oceans '11. The cocktails were obviously amazingly crafted. They artists who created them were informative and there to make sure those in attendance had fun. The alcohol of choice for the evening was whiskey and the things they did to it with coffee, apricot, grapefruit, and a plethora of other ingredients were mind blowing. You have to check this place out next time you have the chance, it is a well underrated gem here in Rochester. read more

More than can be taken in by the senses in one visit, this space needs to be visited a few times (or as often as you're able) to try to observe every expertly placed piece of art, taxidermy, knickknack, vintage vehicle, old school appliance, etc etc. Truly a wonder of the world. The mission of this place is inspiring and the people who work here are kind and encourage questions. My girlfriend and I were lucky to be on a tour given by April, who was just delightful and even let us see things that aren't usually on the tour (shhh). I visited Artisan Works for a fundraising event that was being hosted there, and was super impressed! The venue is very cool - so much going on to see! The event I attended was for the American Cancer Society's Five Eat Five, and was held in the larger room in the back. What a cool place. It is very Rochester to me. My best friend had her wedding here and that is when I first got to experience it. The night before the wedding, they had rehearsal here and it was great to get a glimpse of everything here. There is so much to see and do and it is so different than any other museum you go to. There are so many photo opportunities here. I feel like this would be an amazing place for engagement photos. Rehearsal went well. The staff was great. The next day for the wedding the bridal parties had their own rooms to hang out in and finish getting ready for the day. The wedding itself went fabulous. Everything was really great and we have some amazing pictures from the day. Most of the museum was also open during the wedding so guests could look around. A few things that I didn't love about the space for an event: the ground is brick and uneven. Ladies - beware when you are in heels. A good handful of us went down and I wouldn't be surprised if a good handful of ladies go down at every event. I also felt the space was a bit small for the amount of people who attended the wedding. Everything in the event room was Soooo close. There was barley room to walk down the aisle and then once the tables were set up you could barely get around the tables. I would suggest keeping your guest list around 100 to have space for everyone to mingle. Overall, an amazing place to visit and a really cool place to get some pictures taken. This place was pretty incredible. Went on a date with my girlfriend and there is so much to look at. Thousands of different pieces of artwork to take in, as well as rooms with pool tables to play on. You have to walk through each room multiple times to really take it all in and it's easy to kill multiple hours here. The only reason I'm not giving it 5 stars is because the tour felt rushed. You can take a tour through a separate building full of classic cars and other cool artworks, but you really don't have time to take it in. Me being a car lover, would only get to really admire every 1 in 3 cars or so, because the tour just kept moving. And once it was done, it was done, you can't re-enter the building read more

Holy Artwork Batman! This is an amazing space. I came here for an event and was amazed by everything. The most amazing thing, as it should be, is the art. The art is displayed everywhere, not just the walls. The other cool thing is that everything is for sale. You find a inlaid wood harley-davidson calling your name? You can buy it! The space is also used for studio space and living space for up to 6 artists at a time. Awesome! We enjoyed a beautiful happy hour on the roof top deck which was also covered in art. The Elizabeth Collection is a fantastic concept! Tons of art by anyone from local starving artists to famous greats hang on every surface, in every nook and cranny of this ginormous warehouse-turned-gallery. Every type of composition that you can think of has a place here. It can be a bit overwhelming at times, but there is so much here, you're destined to find something you love. My favorite moment was the first time I went, walked around the corner, and BAM, in the middle of a cluttered wall, at chest-level, was an original Salvador Dali. I could reach out and touch it! (Big no no...) So, if you're into art at all (whether you're a buff or complete novice) you should check it out. It's a lot of fun and proceeds to to local artists. Also, please note that this is located at Artisan Works. Here, you can find studios and see works in progress from local artists. There is also a movie room that screens various films, and a Frank Lloyd Wright room designed using Wright's architectural and artistic styles. The room is full of hundreds of books about Wright, and there are boxes and boxes of slides you can view through the slide projector. Check it out with friends or family. And if you ever plan events, check out the various event spaces (including the awesome rooftop garden)! read more

It seems like most of the reviews of Artisan Works are as an art gallery, without anyone really addressing the event hosting aspects (other than mentioning that such a service exists). So I'll briefly corroborate what everyone has said here and say that Artisan Works is an amazing gallery with no more than a few inches of open wall space in any given area. The place is absolutely covered in awesome art and everyone should check it out. What I really want to comment on is how Artisan Works stacks up as an event space. My wife and I choose Artisan Works to hold our wedding reception in July of 2010. I won't talk too much about price (it would feel a little uncouth, plus I don't know how their pricing plan may have changed in the year and a half since we booked the space). I will say that while AW was definitely the most expensive venue we looked at, we were immediately hooked and I believe we got a good value for the price. First, their event planning staff is extremely friendly and available. The turn around time on emails was never more than a day or two, and once we got closer to the event we were able to call them anytime and get a call back within a couple of hours. In terms of face-to-face, we got a free tour of the facility which highlighted the rooms that were potentially a good fit for our event which culminated in a sit down meeting about food and pricing options... on the freaking roof. A month or so before the event we had another face-to-face to iron out the final details. One great thing about choosing AW as a venue is that they take care of a lot of the hassle. They provide bar and wait staff and have a food vendor you can use (but you can choose to use another vendor without an additional charge). They also provide all the table and linen rentals and some sound equipment should you want a DJ. Any event also comes with the option of hosted tours for your guests. As far as the rooms themselves, there are a lot of options depending on the size and nature of your event. We used Vertigo Heights. It's a Hithcock themed room that comfortably fit the dance floor, seating, and food for us and 100 guests. We did not, but there was also the option of having the ceremony itself in the room as well. To summarize... Cons: Though it was a good value, it was a bit pricey. If you want to hold your event on the roof you have to reserve that space and another room in case of bad weather, so you basically end up paying extra on a gamble. The decorations on the roof were nice, but the view of the surrounding area is very underwhelming. Pros: Very low hassle for us. No need to worry about decorations. Good food. Helpful and flexible staff (they were able to rearrange the table layout for us 20 minutes before everyone arrived). One-of-a-kind event experience. If you hire a photographer all your pictures will be AMAZING. I may be biased, but I have never been to a reception more awesome than ours. Any that I've seen on tv (my wife watches TLC... What can you do?) cost at least 3 times as much. You get a great value for what you spend. If you can afford the cost, I recommend using Artisan Works 100%. I challenge anyone to find a more interesting venue with a friendlier staff anywhere in the area. As a final note, you must be a member at AW in order to reserve a space. If you aren't, the most basic membership cost is built in to your deposit. read more

WHOA this is definitely not your typical art gallery! Not particularly being into art, the great reviews from fellow yelpers really made me want to visit. There was a special event here, and admission was half price at $6, so I made the trip. One visit doesn't do this place justice, and I have committed to myself to come back again. Art is everywhere you look and Artisan Works takes the typical gallery and really spins it into an unique space that simply put needs to be visited. It definitely won't be for everyone, for you might want to visit first before taking kids. But it'll make you appreciate the limitless possibilities of one's imagination. My favorite room was by far the firehouse, for I have a friend who is one. Each room was a different adventure and you didn't know what was going on until you ventured in. The room with the dentist's chair was surely a bit out there though. There was also a room with a lot of Kodak items, and I enjoyed how it patronized the city of Rochester. Finally I know that the human body is art, but boy there was quite a few naked bodies throughout the place!
