My daughter is an artist and we absolutely love this art supply store. They have a large selection of paint mediums. They also have a large selection of frames and easels. The staff are incredibly helpful and kind. If you'd like to sit down while you paint, they have a selection of art tables and chairs. They can be pricey, however. read more

Since they tend to stock a LOT of square panels, I had to inquire about their service of cutting custom size panels. Unfortunately they do the cutting off site, so whether you are required to order the panel for the size you need, or you choose to have them cut it, you are required to come to the store multiple times. read more

I like to paint. I paint all the time, I love making things, creating things, building things & then, paint paint paint, I could paint it all. I love colors, colors are very important to me in painting, so are textures & light & technique, if you know what i'm talking about, you will love this store. This store has every color of paint, fine art oils, acrylic, water colors, oil sticks, textures to add to the paints etc., They also have tons of brushes, raw canvas, pre-stretched canvases, art paper, art books, art pencils, whatever kind of art you are creating, you can find all your materials here, and lots more. Took an art class here and it was very well done. Good attendance and I learned a lot. Only problem is they don't have a dedicated classroom place and it can get quite noisy if store is busy. And set up was not conducive to seeing and hearing. There was a good turnout of students so that made things pretty cramped. read more

I've been visiting Santa Fe for the past few months and thought I would do some projects to keep me busy while I am here. So I found Artisan and paid them a visit. I've since been there several times now and noticed a few things that only return customers would, and thought I would share. I agree with other posters who say the store is poorly stocked and not restocked with any regularity. The store and merchandise are kind of dirty, some covered with a layer of dust, and left askew on the shelves. I don't know what the employees do all day, but they certainly aren't cleaning and taking stock of what needs to be reordered. Also, not once has any employee ever asked me if I needed help with finding something. I think I spent an hour in the store one day and wasn't acknowledged once. Normally I like to shop without being pestered, but it's nice to have someone at least let you know they are there to help if needed. Ironically, I have spent more money with Hobby Lobby than Artisan because in some areas they have an equal or better variety of products, and they also have way better prices like weekly sales and 40% off coupons that you can use every day on any single item. I've also ordered many things from Amazon because Artisan didn't have it. Returns are frustrating too. I bought some paper pads and was told they don't allow returns on paper, although one time they did and I guess it's hit or miss who follows their policy. I could see if these were specialty papers or something fragile, but a notebook or sketchbook? I've always heard that Santa Fe is a huge arts town...I guess I expected a much better art supply store. You could be great, Artisan...you have such a nice big location, step up and take advantage of it! read more

During the pandemic, we finally found time to take up painting again. My husband made a list of all the colors he wanted, and it was a lot! I called in the order (sorry I don't remember who I spoke to), and it was very quick that we received a call back telling us which items were in stock, I'd say about 90%, more than we expected. Despite their ample offerings, the customer service provided by its top echelon leaves much to be desired. Twice, I've bought stretched canvases there that were warped, too loose and substandard for my gallery exhibition. The exchange manager told me he wouldn't allow a refund because the returned canvases were unwrapped. He ignored me when I said it was impossible to tell the canvas quality until it WAS unwrapped. He reiterated the ten-day return policy which is difficult if you live hours away from Santa Fe as I do. Overall, his cold reception gave me the impression he didn't much care. I spend over $1,000 annually on art supplies but from now on, I'll shop elsewhere. read more

I have no idea how the person who wrote the awful review got such a terrible impression of customer service here...I only visit once or twice per year, not once per month (I live out of state, but NM is my home away from home), but each time I've been here the customer service people are helpful, they smile (just like normal people would), and answer questions without any kind of attitude whatsoever. I don't know if we were in the same store...but it must be. I was just there a few days ago. Ron, in particular, was so friendly and helpful and he was very interested to hear why I shopped there, why I was in Santa Fe, etc. The store in Taos was similar to this one - no substantive difference in customer service, and I'm really sorry if they closed. I had planned to visit last week but didn't make it up to Taos. The only reason I gave the store four stars instead of five is that their prices are stratospherically high...more than retail, even. It's good to have them available for an art emergency, but if you can wait a few days, almost anything here can be had from ASW, Jerry's, or Dick Blick for much, much less (my favorites and they all seem to compete on prices so you get essentially the same price with any of these...and they also compete with each other to offer 10-25% off deals. 25% is rare but wait for these and stock up. I do like to support local art stores, for sure, but, unfortunately, for those of us who can't afford to pay double or more than double just to support our favorite cause, or store, or whatever, our personal 'bottom line' will be the main factor on where we shop. For example, I just can't see paying, say, $47.56 + tax for a 37ml tube of oil paint that would cost me ~$20 online including possibly free shipping and a great discount depending on the size of the order. I do like to shop here for the hard to find items I rarely see, such as the ultra high quality $$$ Holbein painting knives. The $40 + tax I spent was well worth it since they are almost not seen anywhere else and here I could see and feel it before buying such an expensive painting knife. read more

This art supply store is pretty pricey, but everyone who works ther knows their art supplies. Plus, it's the easiest place in town to go to if you're an artist and want to spent way too much money for your project. My only complaint is that they don't carry inkjet paper for photos (which seems like a massive gap in their inventory to me, but maybe I'm just rabble rousing...). Products are OK but many things out of stock. Good selection of many brands of each paint. More expensive than some art stores, way more than online (sometimes double). My low rating is for the customer service, particularly with one younger girl who works there. I was buying some items as a gift, for stamp making. They have the rubber, the cutting tools (though many out of stock). I couldn't find the stamp pads, so I asked- to which she replied 'we don't sell *that* kind of stuff here'. Well, you sell kids craft stuff and scrapbooking stuff, why would you think stamp pads are beneath you? Then, when I was checking out, I engaged her in idle conversation. I've just moved to Santa Fe and said I was finding it interesting and the people memorable. She immediately launched into how people moving here are gentrifying Santa Fe. I asked how it was effecting the area- she responded that 'the Californians' were building too much, too much 'housing and stuff, on top of things' and 'rich people are ruining it' and went on about it for a while. So your employee not only responds to questions about products with demeaning comments, but responds to someone saying they're new by belittling them and where they come from? I come in and spend the extra money to support your local store. So- no more from me. I felt gross when I left. read more

This company has a huge selection of supplies. I could spend hours in the store simply looking at all the acrylic paints, brushes, and papers. The customer service was pleasant and the store was laid out well. Finding supplies was as easy as navigating the store or asking a clerk for assistance. The store is pricey. I get significantly more bang for my buck with online retailers. THis is troublesome for I want to give city businesses my business, but when the prices dictate that I can get far more materials for the same amount of cash I tend to order online. I will come here again when in Santa Fe. It was a good experience. It is always nice to see materials up close and talk to knowledgable artists on the material application. read more

I placed an order via phone with Kate at Artisan. I'm not an artist in any capacity but now that I have time on my hands( thanks Covid19) I decided to take an online drawing course. The course listed the materials needed so I told Kate what was on it. She was terrific!! She walked to the areas in the store to find the specific items I asked for while I was on the phone so she could validate what was needed and what they had. Most items she knew they carried but just checked to assure they were in stock. They had almost everything I asked for right down to brands, sizes, colors, etc. I placed my order and it was delivered to me within a couple hours (probably just over an hour but I didn't check exact times). Ron delivered the goods and he was very friendly. I wouldn't hesitate a moment to recommend these folks to those who are new to artistry as they were so very helpful and patient with my questions and needs. I love Artisan, it is local and I find what I need most of the time. Their prices are fair, their counter help is always cheerful. I rarely find employees to ask a question on the floor as they are usually at the counter, but whoever is manning the place has gladly helped me as quick as they could. My favorite thing beyond the art supplies is that they welcome my 2 dogs, who love to go in and see the place. They always get friendly petting and a warm welcome. Plus, if you get their Artisan membership card (not a credit card), after $500 spent you get a $50 towards any supplies. I go through $500 easily so the $50 bonus is great. In a world of online shopping, I prefer Artisan. My dogs do too, always an adventure. read more

I really want this to be a great art store. I try to support local, and almost feel guilty about buying most of my supplies from giant corporation Dick Blick online. However, I am usually disappointed by Artisan. They don't restock, so they are often out of the supplies that you buy from them regularly, or they don't have the same size that you got last time, so you are forced to buy bigger/more expensive than you need. If they make a mistake, like double-charging your credit card, the cashiers make it your problem. Fortunately, the general manager understands customer service and will resolve the issue and offer an apology, but they should teach their "front line" staff what customer service. The prices are high enough that one should expect a certain level of customer service. If you're a beginning artist or hobbyist, Artisan is adequate, but if you're a professional (a lot of my friends are and feel the same way), you'll have to buy your supplies online, because there isn't a good place for the professional artist to get materials in Santa Fe. read more

I have to say I've never written a yelp review but feel so strongly negative about Artisan Santa Fe's customer service that I want to write one. I am a professional artist living in the area for 12 years and have encountered surprisingly consistently awful customer service in this store. I mean it's almost laughable; every time I go in I get ignored or, when I ask a question, I get deadpan, monosyllabic replies. They are huge snobs and it would seem to require an act of congress to get them to crack a smile. Do they torture these employees? They act like they absolutely hate their jobs, hate artists, hate life! I think they train them in anti-service. I live between Taos and Santa Fe and can shop at either store and started going to Taos years ago because they were SO much nicer, but then they closed. Yes, they knew their art supplies, but frankly having a pleasant experience in the store is more important to me. I think the Santa Fe Artisan employees almost singlehandedly pushed me to switch to Dick Blick online, which is what I do exclusively now. And DB has phone reps who cheerfully and knowledgeably answer any product questions I might have too. So much better! I don't hurry out of Artisan with a bad taste in my mouth. I have never anywhere, in any kind of business, come across worse customer service. I honestly don't know how they've stayed in business except for the many artists in Santa Fe who apparently don't know they have options or like being treated like illiterate serfs. I took my $100/month business to a much worthier recipient and I gotta say it feels good to write this after so many years of that place! read more

I'm a regular customer at Artisan/Santa Fe. There's always a knowledgeable person available when I need advice. Recently the manager saw the product (tool) I was holding and suggested one that would work even better for me...and it cost less! I'm not sure who assigns $$$ ratings to these reviews, but if you shop the frequent sales and markdowns, Artisan can be less than online. Nevertheless, for a few cents more, I much prefer supporting local businesses whenever I can. Best of all, I like being able to describe my latest project and have a real person consult with me on what products will work best in my situation. read more

I liked their old location, dusty and maze-like in an old adobe on Canyon Road but you know, the parking there was just impossible, Canyon Road being the must-do walk when you go gallery-hopping in Santa Fe. So I understand the wisdom of the move to Cerrillos Road. And it's easy to get into their parking lot and the new store is bright, well-laid-out and easy to shop. Having said all that, you'd better know what you want. This is a pro art store and the staff obviously expects you already understand the merits of Winsor Newton versus Holbein watercolors (I prefer Maimeri, personally and above all, don't believe it when Schminke says their colors are lightfast. I have proof....) If you are the kind of art supply shopper who goes in, raps out an order for 50 full sheets of Fabriano, and not the extra-white, the old off white stuff, 300 lb and where are the better Kolinsky brushes, you'll be treated well. If you are a hobbyist, it might be a bit daunting as they are not staffed like Michaels with people waiting to give you advice on scrapbooking. read more

I have just had one of the worst experiences that I have ever had in a retail establishment within this store. The assistant manager had me in tears, I believe because I dared ask for help with a small purchase. I feel that because I am not wealthy, I am not welcome here. However, the woman who helped me find my items was kind and tried to smooth things over after the passive-aggression piled on me by the others. Every time I walk in to Artisan Santa Fe to purchase art supplies it brightens my day! The warm and friendly staff are always helpful in sharing their knowledge about the wide range of materials they offer. If a product is not available (which is rare as their stock of items is terrific) the staff will help artists to order just the right material needed to complete any project. I teach art students in the Santa Fe area, and I honestly don't know what I would do without these fantastic folks to assist my students with their supply lists while making them feel so comfortable.
