If you are walking around Encinitas, the store is in a great location; however, if you are driving from anywhere else, good luck finding a parking space. The store itself had some good finds but the prices were expensive, the store dark, and bugs crawled on shelves. The back corner was a tight squeeze because most of the walking space was taken up by large boxes. I could not get out of there fast enough! read more

This intimate shop is carefully curated. It's a nice respite from the seashell jewelers and mimosa crowds roaming the streets. Some museum worthy gems on the shelves but also some casual, dog-eared items ready to be read. It doesn't take much for the shop to feel crowded but book lovers don't mind so much making room for another book lover. Definitely worth poking your head in while strolling the classic business thoroughfare. read more

My favorite bookstore! Don't judge this store by its size. The selection here is top-notch, the prices are more than fair, and the service is wonderful. You can find rare books here as well as signed editions. Every recommendation I've received has been great, thanks to the incredibly knowledgeable owner. I live almost two hours away, and it's worth the drive every time. read more

What an amazing shop! I have regular weekly appointments near this bookstore, and it finally piqued my curiosity enough that I had to come in with my girlfriend and see what was inside. The most interesting thing about the place is that it isn't just for the really difficult to find stuff. We spoke with Greg, the owner, for at least an hour, and in that time we saw a very old 1920 Don Quixote English translation (four volumes), a Dickens collection, a Dumas leather bound series, and so much more! He even has a combo first printing hardcover and paperback Catcher in the Rye. But that's not all. Besides the expensive and rare, he has an eclectic array of all genres. Are you looking for a specific cover or European release? He might have it! Signed books from a local or regional author? Of course! In my photo, you'll see the 1978 cover art version of a Brave New World paperback that I picked up while I was there. read more

I love used books and I was rewarded when I decided to visit this little shop. I met the owner of the shop who I have decided he should be the considered the great curator of used books. His warm personality made me and my wife welcome. I purchase pulp fiction books because they are easy and fun to read. Don't buy new books you are missing everything that isn't new and it would be new to you. Please stop by this place. read more

Nice little bookstore. There are some good deals on hardcover books outside. Nice selection of cookbooks. The owner has some fine condition Easton Press and Franklin Library pieces behind the register that could use a good home. There are some vintage and signed books as well. If you have questions, the friendly guy behind the counter is pretty knowledgeable about inventory. Prices are fair and I am all too happy to support a local independent bookstore. read more

This bookstore is more like a library where you purchase books. I continue to be amazed at the breadth of books available at Artifact Books. The owners continually encourage me to call in to see if they have a book in stock that interests me. I live in Alpine but will stop in without calling just because it is so much fun to shop there. By far the best used book store in North County. This book store was formally called Book Tales but it has been rebranded by the new owner, Greg Mollin. If you visited Book Tales with the elderly woman running it and were turned off by her rudeness and cold attitude toward her patrons I would 100% give Greg's renewed shop a chance. His selection is great, his prices are both affordable and fair, and he always offers great recommendations. At the end of July, my girlfriend and I visited his shop on my birthday and he allowed me to pick any book off his vintage shelf and have it for free! Today, two months later, we visited and it was my girlfriend's birthday and he offered the same thing. He even lent us a horror short story anthology to read! He's a respectable guy and runs a great shop. Please give him your business and keep this shop alive. Saturday, November 2nd - The owner is planning a grand opening party starting at 6pm. It'll be catered by a nearby vegan restaurant and will be sponsored by a local winery. Can't wait as we will be attending for sure! read more

I also appreciated the notes throughout the store encouraging the reading of banned books. Seems an appropriate message given the name of the bookshop. Plenty of free street parking in the area.

For a book whose spine is parting? Missing pages? C'mon. Don't even bother looking at most of what they call "Vintage" books. They ask a king's ransom for them. I found paperback after paperback that was priced at over $20 each... for a book barely 50 years old and a cover price of $1.50. Outlandish. I actually performed a reality check and went to Ebay to check on 7 or 8 of those titles. In each case the books sold for much less on Ebay than Helen is asking. They most definitely need to adjust their pricing schema. It's not like they're paying rent in downtown La Jolla for goodness sake. I was originally, upon walking in, going to say their large, diverse selection is a strength. Now I understand it's simply a function of them not selling their books at a good turnover rate at all... consequently, their stock piles up. Shame.

It's very cute to stop by when I'm in the area visiting some local place in Encinitas. It's a little hard to find parking off the strip, but honestly, it's normally such a nice walk that it's hardly a bother to walk to. Dog friendly (with well-behaved owners) as are most places along the coast, and the vendors are normally sweet small business owners.

I spotted Verbatim while looking for parking for a pho and pokemon store down the street. This store has the variety I love, new release copies along with formerly loved ones. We were looking for NBA books but they didn't have any, but they had everything else the 12 yr old loves to read. They even carried an impressive Southeast Asian collection for Cambodia which is what my Pha had every single copy of already.

Plenty of people working there. Everyone seemed to enjoy their job. And there's a cool Zine corner in the back, which I loved. They buy used books which was good to know. Parking is on the street or in a nearby structure.

Admittedly, I usually stop by for everything but their books as that's usually what piques my interest at Warwick's. I've discovered so many cute stationery brands that I've never even heard of, like Girl of All Work's Page Flags and more recently, L'après-midi Travel Journals! The shop is divided into 2 halves. One side carries art/decor and jewelry made by local artists in glass displays, and as you walk further in, you'll see an extensive selection of greeting cards, notebooks, and fountain pens in glass cases. They also carry gift wrapping supplies and assorted bags. The other side carries books and has a cute children's section with plushies, including Jellycats! I do have to say, the service is not always consistent. Some of the employees definitely profile you upon entering, but there are respectable employees that are genuinely eager to help you find what you're looking for! As a local, whenever I'm unable to find something in-stores, an employee happily offers to take down my info so that they can contact me if the item arrives in-stores at some point, which I greatly appreciate. From my experience, the pricing for the stationery is fair, in fact, for some of the items that I've purchased, Warwick's prices are actually lower than what you'd find online. The L'après-midi Travel Journals retail for $18 online from the brand's exclusive US distributor, but Warwick's prices the journals at $13.95! Similarly, the Girl of All Work Page Flags retail for $7 on the brand's website, but at Warwick's, it's $5.99. Parking can be difficult if you're trying to park directly in front of the store or on the main street, but if you drive around a bit, you're likely to find a spot within a reasonable walking distance. All in all, Warwick's remains as a fun shopping destination. If you're anything like me, you'll walk in with no intention to get anything, but will walk out with a shopping bag in hand. :)

I found this cute bell and just had to get it since I was a teacher. The symbols on it served as inspiration for a tattoo so again, you never know what you'll find there. I love their matchboxes and it gets me excited to go in there and see if there's a new design. I have quite the collection of their matchboxes. They are open on the weekdays too so if you're looking for a Christian book or random gifts and greeting cards, you can stop by! The staff is super friendly and the environment is great!
