We stayed here for 4 nights. The stars are given for the great location of the house but that is it. Other than that, I was not impressed at all with the house or staff itself. The common space of the house is very cluttered and messy. The only word that comes mind to describe the overall house is "janky". Definitely not a place you'd want to spend any time at other than to sleep. Our room was dark and uninviting. Although mostly clean, it was not great (definitely don't look too close at things). Our closet was full of random junk (creamer pods, kcups, stuff just thrown in there). The bed was very uncomfortable. For a B&B the breakfast was underwhelming and basic (same choices every day). The "chef" was extremely condescending our first morning. We didn't understand how their breakfast worked, and she made us feel like idiots in front of the other guests. There are many places in Newport to stay....I would not let the location or price tempt me to stay here again. read more

This bed-and-breakfast was recommended by a friend and I took her advice and booked a two night stay. I was able to check in early with Heidi, and she was so friendly and also gave us a rundown of not only how the bed-and-breakfast works, but what there is to see in town. The room was cozy and cute and I felt like I was right at home. The breakfast was amazing and Eileen the chef was so welcoming and told us so many great stories about Newport. This inn is one block from Thames Street and everything we needed was in walking distance, Thames was awesome. This in also has a parking lot, which is very convenient. Upon our return on our first day out, there were fresh baked cookies in the lobby which was such a sweet touch. We visited off-season and it was still great, I can only imagine how beautiful Newport is in the spring. Highly recommend this inn! read more

This isn't your usual lodge. It's a Victorian B&B right next to the mansions and harbor views. I came here to relax and a quiet time far away from my busy and crazy adventurous chaotic life lol. I wanted to be away from all the people I know so that I can have some time to rethink about my life choices. (Ik ik I'm getting a little carried away). I came here during thanksgiving and it was one of best decisions in my last year. Heidi, the inn keeper was nothing but an amazing host who welcomed me and made sure I had the in room jacuzzi. She recommended few places nearby for me to checkout. I mainly came here to check out the mansions and the harbor view with a little bit of sunshine. And Mannn... Newport, RI didn't disappoint on that one. This location is soo close to the mansions and cliff walk, it's a walking distance from the place. The lodge has a free onsite parking as well. They have coffee to go and an amazing view on the third floor where the conservatory is. I loved the breakfast and the delicious coffee and Of course the wine (Heheheh) Also the fire place you can adjust the temperature to ur liking during this freezing cold. The highlight for me was the in room jacuzzi yooo. I was in that jacuzzi the whole time while I was there. If you wanna feel calm and have a relaxing time you should definitely check out this lodge. I don't understand all the good reviews. So, a disclaimer: this is my experience. I'm glad if others enjoyed their lodging choice. I did not. When my husband and I arrived, we went immediately into our room and I dropped my purse. I reached down to pick it up and saw underneath the bed; there was a bottle of lotion, an empty can and empty water bottle and dust 1/4 inch deep. I called the inn manager; Heidi said if we were upset, we could go to a hotel. I explained it was our 35th wedding anniversary and we were tired (it was about 9:00 p.m.) and had flown in and then had to drive two hourss. To her credit, she did clean out from under the bed, but as I ventured further into the room (what the inn called a suite), there was a huge stain on the loveseat and a wet brown stain on the rug. The bathroom wasn't much better. There was rust and mildew and you could hardly turn around because it was so small. The vanity was in the room with the small TV and there were someone's mouthwash, hair spray and cotton balls still there from a previous lodger. . . The only decent things I found about the experience: morning coffee and parking but these didn't add up to over $250 per night. The furniture was old and what was new appeared to me to be Hobby Lobby clearance. The advertised coffee maker in the room was a joke. There was none. There was a community pot but couldn't find a water source. As for Heidi being around, we didn't see her for the remaining 72 hours. Unfortunately, I deleted the photos I took. I have struggled with whether or not to leave my honest review, but I don't want anyone else to imagine a charming and quaint B&B. I did not find charm or quaintness at the Artful Lodger. read more

From the moment we arrived it was absolutely excellent, easy self check in, went up to our suite and the smell of cleanliness was in the air, the decor was warm and tasteful. We got up for breakfast and Ron greeted us so welcomely, he upheld light conversation and made an amazing breakfast, made tasteful recommendations for dinner and things to do in the area, he also made sure we were taken care of and made sure we were satisfied with all amenities in the room. Ron is the jewel here and we will be back! The parking was convenient and hotel was within walking distance to center of town. This place was great all and all no complaints. My husband and I came for a much needed break from reality and found the Artful Lodger to be a pleasant, comfortable, and centrally located B&B. Pros: Great location within walking distance of downtown Newport restaurants, shops, and cliff walk Reasonably priced and included a generous breakfast with limited gluten-free options Clean and cozy decor Lindsey was a wonderful, cheerful, and attentive chef during breakfast Heidi, the innkeeper was responsive when we requested a room change (see below) Ample parking Nice curb appeal and twinkle lights for the holidays Cookies upon arrival Housekeeping provided extra bath towels automatically Free Wifi Cons: First room we were upgraded to (Anna's) had an extremely unpleasant odor - hospital grade cleaning stench that would not dissipate over time or with windows opened for ventilation (had to relocate) Pillows were very hard and unpleasant to sleep on The water took several minutes to warm up The room we ended up in (Grace's) was very cold - space heaters were provided and did help however There was only whole milk for coffee - no half and half (I realize this sounds super picky lol!) With just a few minor tweaks - softer pillows, half and half, and faster hot water access, then this "good" review would be very good. The Artful Lodger has a lot of advantages for sure and regardless, I recommend you try it, especially if you are on a budget and like charming inns in amazing Newport, RI! P.S. Decided to take a little getaway for our anniversary and choose to stay at the Artful Lodger and so glad we did. Phil was so nice and great. He makes a great breakfast and the rooms are really spacious. We stayed in the Estrella Suite which was beautiful. It was close enough to walk everywhere. We walked to the restaurants which took about ten minutes and cliff walk as well. There is parking there which is nice. When we come back to Newport we definitely will stay here again. read more

I must preface this review by stating I've never stayed in a BnB before, so I didn't really know what to expect. Luckily, after buying Newport Folk Festival tickets a couple months ago, a friend and I found a vacancy at this hotel! (We don't do the whole "camping" thing). We stayed in Victoria's room, a first-floor room with a private bath and a window unit AC. It seemed to get tired left running all day, but it did the trick to keep us cool at night. The bed was soft and I was worried I'd wake up with a sore back, but it was actually very comfortable. The breakfast space is upstairs and overlooks the water. There's a small deck too. Michael and Lieza, the innkeepers, are great cooks and good breakfast companions. Michael makes a mean omelet. Unfortunately, I think "award-winning" french toast was the specialty of former innkeepers. But the food was good, and we were able to sneak upstairs for late night cereal and fruit after returning from a disappointingly tiny and overpriced dinner one night. Clean accommodations, a friendly staff, free parking behind the building, a deck out front, and great water pressure in the bathroom? I'm sold. read more

be very careful if you make a reservation with a special rate-they will cancel you and use the excuse that "expedia overbooked". if you look at their website to make a reservation, there is a graph of the rooms and dates and what is available or an 'x' appears if not available, so how can my confirmed reservation, made 14 months ago with hotels.com, be overbooked-their words using 'expedia' and 'overbooked'. then she commented at the room rate! and hung up on me and sent 2 more of my calls to their recording. my "best available rate" was $40 plus taxes. this is all in the confirmation email, dated july 18, 2022, and to "please save or print this email as your receipt". they cancelled me 48 hrs before my trip to newport, to attend my 55th high school reunion, so i am not a young adult. shame on them. read more

I just called the Artful Lodger to inquire about booking for myself, my husband, and our 2 year old. We were told we were not allowed to stay there due our child not being welcomed. When I pointed out that I had read reviews for the property specifically from people with young children, the man on the other end of the phone retorted "Not on my watch." We had a wonderful recent stay at the Artful Lodger. Our room was clean and conveniently on the first floor. The staff was absolutely wonderful and accommodating. We were going to the beach and had no supplies and they provided us with chairs, umbrella, towels and a beach bag for the day. Breakfast was delicious and absolutely lovely with a great view from the breakfast room on the top floor. Couldn't have asked for a nicer stay and we will be back!! read more

We had a great time here despite being in the middle of winter and going through a blizzard. The inn keepers, Lisa and Randy, were fantastic; so accommodating and helpful. They actually drove my wife and I to the restaurant where we had reservations so that we didn't have to walk through all the snow. The day after the blizzard we woke up to find our car dug out of the snow and windows clean. The breakfast...I'd come back just for the breakfast. Wow! Our room was spacious and yet quaint. Comfortable bed and large jacuzzi tub (not sure all the rooms have one though). Definitely would recommend to others. read more

stayed here with my husband for our anniversary weekend. the location is great! convenient walking distance from downtown newport, but far enough away that its nice and quiet. also, has a parking lot which is great as well. street parking in newport is definitely difficult, the streets are small and narrow! phil, the inn keeper was super friendly and helpful. very easy to get in touch with. the inn itself was cute. our room was on the first floor, which we could access through a back door near the parking area. comfy king bed. overall space was a bit tight. definitely felt like we were a bit on top of each other. but we didn't spend too much time in the room. read more

My fiancee and I stayed here last weekend and it we had a wonderful experience. We had never stayed at a B&B before and weren't quite sure what to expect, but we were made to feel 100% at home and it was never uncomfortable. The woman who runs the place, Jackie, is friendly and knowledgeable about the area. She gave us great tips on how to get around and where to go at night. Our room was large and comfortable and we had a private bathroom. The location is very convenient to both the Mansions in the area as well as the little town where the nightlife takes place and it was easy to get from one place to another. Breakfast in the morning was perfect, french toast, coffee and juice and the room where we ate had amazing views of the neighborhood. I really enjoyed my time in Newport, and I would recommend the Artful Lodger to anyone traveling here. read more

Sat, Mon March 10-12, 2018 My GF and I had a really nice time in this charming, old rickety house built in 1860. The location is great, only about 3 blocks form the first restaurant/bar - Zelda's on the main strip. We would be regulars if we lived in the neighborhood. Phil is a great host, concierge and chef! The location is at the tale end of town which puts you close to the Cliff Walk, yet only a few minutes walk from all the action along Thames Street. I really wanted to give this place a better review, since I genuinely liked the innkeeper, but I cannot. I will start with the things I DID like. The off street parking was good and the location of the building is very convenient for anything you could need in town. The views from the breakfast room were beautiful, and I liked the grounds on the outside of the building. That's about all that sets this apart from any other hotel or B and B. For over $200 a night, there are certain amenities that I expect, especially in a town where there are ample choices for lodging. The rooms are small, and you can hear everything in the rest of the house. I suppose many like that "old charm" but it is less than quaint when we are sleeping and can hear every footstep, floorboard creak and squeaky door. The rooms also did not have many items I would expect, such as lotion, soap in the bathroom, free wifi, or enough outlets to run the TV and charge your cell phone at the same time. There was a small station out in the hall that was supposedly full of items for our convenience. I reality it had a rusty, tiny coffee pot with Folgers in a can, some Lipton tea bags, chocolate covered almonds that had seen better days, and some half and half. No bottled water, no fresh snacks. Again, this probably sounds picky, and if I were paying $70 a night I wouldn't expect more. For over $200 I would expect some upgrades, like more tea choices, fresher snacks, bottled water in the fridge (we just drank from the tap the whole time), and maybe even a coffee maker that was newer than 10 years old and more expensive than $20 at Walmart. Other places we've stayed have had full espresso machines, if not at least a K-Cup coffee maker. Perhaps the most disappointing part was the breakfast. We called almost a week ahead to make sure there would be something for my husband to eat since he is a vegan. We were assured that they knew all about vegan eating and would stock up on choices for him. When we went up for breakfast, the menu included a twist on eggs Benedict, with buttered English muffin, cheese, bacon,and egg. It was delicious (I am vegetarian so I was able to eat it without the meat), but my husband couldn't have the butter, the cheese, the bacon OR the egg. He was left with an English muffin with a tomato on it. Not quite the 5 star experience we had heard about. There wasn't even oatmeal, a very easy vegan option. We sort of got the "oh, I didn't know you meant you couldn't have all those things" runaround without very much sympathy. I would understand if we just showed up and hadn't told anyone about his eating habits, but we spoke with the innkeepers specifically to make sure he could have the breakfast part of the bed and breakfast. You would think he would get extra home fries, the one item he could eat, but he got a tiny tablespoon worth with his meager English muffin. Luckily we always travel with energy bars for such occasions. I know this is a bit long, but we had been looking forward to our getaway in Newport only to be let down on most fronts. We've stayed elsewhere in Newport before and will be staying elsewhere next time, as you simply do NOT get enough bang for your buck here. read more

Very close to a five star stay. This is a friendly, clean, humble and quaint inn. We are normally 5 star hotel kind of people, but decided to stay at a b&b. I'm so glad we chose this one. There is a small parking lot out back for guests which is a huge bonus. You can literally walk to anywhere (assuming you're physically able to!) We didn't use the car the whole visit. We stayed in room #7. It was beautiful. Had an air conditioner. A fridge. The bed and pillows were amazingly comfortable. A big bathroom and shower (which was so clean!!) The only down fall being the very weak water pressure in the shower. Even my boyfriend mentioned "you don't usually stay in the shower that long" haha I said I had no choice!! I'm sure it's because it's such an old building with likely an old water service. But.. it is what it is! We did not have the pleasure of trying the breakfast as there are so many options in walking distance, but if we return I'd like to see what that's all about. The staff that we met were incredibly accommodating. They honestly treat you like you have known them forever. That made us feel so welcome. Thank you for a lovely stay!! read more

From start to finish, my fiancé and I's stay at the Artful Lodger was as positive one. It's very evident that the new Inn Keepers, Lisa and Randy take pride in making sure your stay is top of the line. They are extremely nice, friendly and accommodating. In reading these reviews online before coming, I did see one negative one from 2013, which would have been with the previous owners. Lisa and Randy have addressed everything that was mentioned in that review as an issue. The wifi is free and fast, there is coffee aplenty, and there was hand lotion waiting on the desk as we walked in. Additionally, they have detailed maps of the area readily available and have plenty of suggestions on things too do. We were welcomed days in advance with detailed directions and any special accommodation requests, including food allergies for brunch. There is ample off street parking, which is a huge plus in Newport, especially since just about everything is within walking distance from the B and B. The rooms are rustic and cozy, and for anywhere near the price you won't find a more comfortable bed in town. However the memory that we will be bringing back from this trip, and what will keep us coming back for years to come is the brunch. I consider myself a food person, and this brunch was as fresh and delicious as I can ever remember having. It is beyond restaurant quality, and served on the top floor overlooking an amazing view. Just writing this review is making my stomach growl for more of the delicious frittata and home fries we had. In summation, this is a quality Bed and Breakfast in every meaning of the term, and is truly a hidden gem. read more

I really enjoyed my stay here. GREAT location, close to the mansions, Salve, and Thames. Room was very comfortable, although it was on the street, so a little noisy, but totally workable. The bottom floor rooms are a little dark for my liking, but there are two other floors. The breakfast nook has a beautiful view. Reasonably priced for the area. The best part was 1) the innkeepers Leeza and Mike were just great--well informed, considerate, responsive, friendly, warm, and 2) their food was fabulous. Good, but not great. I really wanted to like our 3 night stay more, and Phil seems like a pretty great guy, but the place left a lot to be desired. My wife and I stayed in the 2nd floor room (Estelle, I believe) and the room was good enough for the price. Minus a few needed repairs (ex. towel rack was broken and placed in the closet), the room was what we expected. What I didn't expect was an college housing apartment building right next door. The college apartments have rear decks that are 30 feet directly across from the window at the bed so all of the late night laughing and carrying on was heard clearly even after closing all the windows. I told Phil about it the first night, and after nothing changed I actually called the police Dept non-emergency number after 11:00pm the next night because it was so loud and crazy next door. That's part of a vacation I do not ever wish to deal with. I was hoping for more variety from breakfast after reading the reviews, but we had the same basic menu for all 3 mornings. It was good, but I was expecting more after all I've read. Phil was very accommodating, but he seemed very tired. I get that he does it all there, and that it's the end of the season, but the hospitality industry demands your best all of the time. That business is not for me, and that's why I'm not in it. Perhaps there should be another innkeeper to help out or alternate so that the poor guy can take a break once in a while to recharge his batteries. read more

I've never written a review before either negative or positive but I strongly feel compelled to do so now. My husband & I have stayed at B & B s frequently both here and abroad. We expect hospitality , warmth and personal service. We received none. Our bed was dirty, the sheets were pilled and the blanket smelled of body odor sprayed with air freshener to disguise the odor. The room was thick with dust. We found another place to stay but the owner wouldn't give us our money back. They offered champagne. We asked for a refund. They offered to clean the room and explained that they were so busy it was difficult to thoroughly clean the rooms between guests. WHAT? No one would want to stay under these circumstances The owner finally offered to refund 1 night and walked off in a huff. We spent that day out touring and came back to an unmade bed & no fresh towels . Is this any way to run a business that prides itself on service? There are many lovely B & B s in Newport. If you are looking for a beautiful little B&B and want to experience history, hospitality, Newport, and a terrific breakfast - this is IT! We were new to B&Bs - so did not mind the quaint antique room...private bath, comfy bed, Internet access, and gorgeous dining room overlooking the harbor. Perfect location to walk everywhere. Mike and Lieza were so friendly and accommodating. If you want a big boring room, go to a motel. This has charm and personality! Highly recommend. Worst B&B experience in many years. We planned a two night romantic stay, which turned into a one-night nightmare. Early October heat made our front-facing bottom floor room almost unbearably hot; the owner had just taken out the A/C's. Needing the windows open all night, the outside traffic (cars and pedestrians) sounded like Times Square. Getting about one hour sleep, we were treated to cold french toast for breakfast. There is a breakfast room upstairs with a wall of windows allowing an unobstructed birds eye view of Narragansett Bay. My husband and I had a wonderful stay this past weekend at the Artful Lodger in Newport, RI. It is situated so close to everything in town from the shopping, to the mansions, to the beaches. We came for a family wedding and the guests at the inn were just lovely to talk to. For two days, wehad an extended family from breakfast, to having people weigh in on how I looked before my event, to sitting around all together chatting and getting to know one another after the long day in the evening. Lisa and Randy are so hospitable, kind, welcoming, and took a genuine interest in us as guests. The breakfast that was served was as everyone raves, just delicious!! Lisa and Randy are just great at what they do. It comes so naturally to them and the Artful Lodger would not be the same without them. We will be going back for years to come. They were also so kind to my 3 year old daughter and accomadating. She loved the creme brulee frnech toast with berries, and bacon. They also made her homemade chocolate milk, got paper and crayons for her to draw, and games that they had in the house. My husband and I had a wonderful time chatting with Randy on the front porch.
