Ever since the pandemic, I have become a plant mama. I started with about four and am up to almost a dozen (every time one needs to be repotted, I have to get another one for the smaller pot!). I've been to Art Terrarium twice now and love my new additions. They have a great selection of pet friendly plants (with the black ceramic kitty peeking out of the middle - he never ceases to make me jump!). There is also a nice selection of succulents (I have finally managed to keep most of the alive!). The women working there are very helpful, especially with repotting and care advice. Convenient location in the Highland Park neighborhood but parking can be a little challenging; I try and go during the week and usually manage to get street parking out front. read more

I am not a person that has a green thumb, but since I first walked into Art Terrarium, I have been slightly obsessed with plants. I came here to get a gift for my husband for our 12th anniversary, and with the help of an incredible employee, ended up picking a few plants and vases that I thought would work well. As I was leaving, I saw another plant that caught my eye, but brushed it off since I had already gotten what I needed. My husband LOVED those two plants... Flash forward two days later, and I find that I am still thinking about the "plant that got away". So, I ended up going back to buy that for my husbands new office... Then I came in a week later with a plant I somehow managed to keep alive at work for a few months, and bought a new pot and had it replanted... Then went in for Valentine's Day to get two similar ZZ plants for our apartment... I can't stop... and I likely won't stop. Aside from the incredible selection of beautiful plants, the staff here (I've worked with three different people at this point), are knowledgeable, helpful, will help you pot the plants you pick, and also give instructions on how to care for them. Also worth noting that if you have a plant that needs repotting, there is a Repotting Bar there, where you can use the soil, charcoal, rocks, etc. to make sure your plant is leaving in prime condition. Depending on how large the plant is, this service is $2 - $4. That deal is outrageous. I'm obsessed and have no doubt you will likely become obsessed as well once you step in. read more

New location is worse than previous location. Parking is difficult to find and it's on a busy street. The interior seems smaller than the previous location so it feels crowded. Some plants are overpriced considering you can get similar plants from bigger chain stores such as Home Depot, Menards, or Wal-Mart. Plus side, this store has a lot of unique pots and planters to offer. read more

A plant lovers dream! There is a huge variety of incredible plants, art, hanging pots, funky pots and recycled ones too. if you are looking to do something creative with an old pot from home or buy one of there beautiful ones they will help you plant your ideal plant in that pot. They are so educated about plant health it's amazing! I went in for a to find an office warming gift for my guy and they killed it. We found a plant that was unique looking and resilient, I was so impressed. When I forgot the exact instructions on how to take care of it I email them and they got right back to me with a full list of care. I now have been back to Art Terrarium many times and I have given there flyer out to probably 10 people. My house will soon be covered in a pile of there plants! They will also help you revive a plant that is looking a little down even if you didn't buy it there. They sell locally crafted apothecary which smelled divine! The owners offer Art Terrarium for events, what a fun way to have an event building a plant :) I can't say enough about this place I am beyond impressed this is exactly what we needed in DSM and it's right at the edge of downtown. read more

This is such a super fun store. Especially seeing all the greenery and fun bright! They have local art and pottery and are very knowledgeable about their plants and keeping them alive and what will work best in your home. They have air plants, house plants, cactus, succulents, fairy garden supplies, ivy, etc. it was so fun being able to re-plant my plant right in store then take it home with clear care directions! Art Terrarium is my favorite. I am a self-proclaimed plant lover but I love this shop for more than just the plants. It has a very laid-back, welcoming vibe. The staff are always available to answer questions or help point in the right direction but also do not rush you while you check out allllll of the options! I love the focus on local and handmade, both in plants and planters. I have purchased multiple gifts here, for others and myself! Additionally, they always have something new to check out so there is a constant reason to go back! They switch out the local artwork, have a variety of rotating plants, and special events (that admittedly I have not yet attending but heard great things about!). Is this heaven? No, it's Iowa, but the Art Terrarium could have fooled me into thinking otherwise. The store is filled with all kinds of plants and artwork designed by local artists as well as artists from all across the country. The staff was great and helped me pick out a plant that I most likely won't kill in my apartment that gets very little natural light. They also host events and workshops that teach you the basics of plant care and terrarium. When I wandered into the store they were hosting a blind date with a book event. The owners were great about helping pick out what plant you might be more suited for. They had great advice on the watering schedule for plants. They also had great advice on the type of pots to use for the plants depending on the water needs. I was great to hear that if you have a succulent or cactus they are great at West winds and if you have a tropical plant they are great at east windows. All things I did not know and would not have known if I had not of stopped at the art terrarium. The difference in soil and all the crazy things that make up potting the perfect plant and keeping it alive were amazing. This is a one of a kind experience. They have lots of local art and a large selection of plants and pots to plant then in. This was a great experience. Thank you art terrarium. read more

Haven't been inside since I started shopping during the pandemic HOWEVER they have such a nice system for curbside pickup. If I was buying from a corporation I'd prefer to pick-out my own plants, however you ALWAYS get a perfect plant here. They're all affordable as well, plus you get FACTUAL information about the plants. Owner is super nice and knowledgeable! I have currently bought a Dracaena, had them pot it for me in a pot bought from them, and it was PERFECT!! Philodendron, aloe vera plant, and the birdsnest are also added to my collection!!
