Anytime I visit a town I have to check for a new age store, crystal store, witchy shop, fair trade place, or similar. Art Gecko is definitely within that overall pantheon of shops. These kinds of stores often have the type of jewelry I like--sterling silver, and with varying gemstones. Art Gecko has a lot of selection here, and they also have a stone of the week (when I was here, it was labradorite). Amber, garnet, ruby, peridot; you'll find it all here. So many rings, earrings, and pendants, and a really great range of sizes. I have big fingers, and there were a lot in my size. Many of the rings were also arranged in tray by size, so I could simply point to the size I wanted to look at rather than be disappointed that something I liked would barely fit my pinky. They also had some of the rings in trays by colors, and there was a tray just of labradorite ostensibly since it's the stone of the month. I didn't need to spend more money than I did. Having said that, I looked diligently to see if they had any bracelets, and their inventory was very very sparse there. I did see an amber bracelet, I think, and perhaps one or two more but not in a stone I liked. That's okay! read more

My husband and I wandered into this store while killing time one morning. I was pleasantly surprised by the jewelry selection and ended up spending a little over $150. A few hours later, I put on one of the necklaces I had just purchased and the clasp snapped off. Not a big deal, I just bought it so I'm sure I can return it since it's clearly defective. Nope. The not very bright and not at all friendly girl who had sold me the necklace that morning said it was against their policy. She did fix it with a slightly unmatched clasp. So sure, it's wearable, but that's not the quality I expected for the price (around $50 I think). I was so put off by their garbage policy regarding defective merchandise, I was immediately sorry I had given them so much of my money. I certainly won't make that mistake again. read more

I really really used to love art gecko. I recommended them to numerous people and I talked them up A LOT! Well today, July 16, 2022, I went shopping on state street and wasn't finding anything I wanted so I decided to go to one of my favorite stores, Art Gecko. I walked 10 minutes to get there and arrived at 6:20 on the dot and was just about to walk in when a younger employee ran to the door, shut it in me and my boyfriends faces and yelled "We're closed!" She then turned around and started laughing with another girl who was inside. Online the business hours say they're open from 10:30 AM until 8 PM. I've never had a negative experience with the Art Gecko on state street until recently. Unattentive staff. Will talk amongst eachother to the point I feel like I'm inconveniencing them asking to simply look at something further. However the opposite happened the last time I visitied maxwell street days I felt pressured to look and buy. (By the same inattentive employee as before). Really pushy sales associates. I got super bad vibes. Charged my friend $10 for a skirt marked $5 and didn't notice until after. The skirt had a red ink stain on it. I don't think I will be returning to this location. which is a shame because I love their jewelery. read more

I know, I know, I know. I can never make my mind up. My latest bout of indecisiveness resulted in new flooring that in no way matched the decor or furniture in my home like I'd originally planned. Oops. So on my merry way I went to a million places searching for something that fit and Art Gecko was on the list. I've been to the Art Gecko once before and remembered the eclectic merchandise they carried, so I was anxious to see if I could find something unique. Stepping foot into the store I was immediately greeted by a friendly group of employees who displayed a keen interest in my shopping needs and showed me around. The store itself isn't terribly tiny by State Street standards as it's two levels. The floor, the walls, and the ceiling are stocked full with fun, creative and bohemianesque decor and lighting that, if I could afford. would all be nestled in my home right now. Luckily I came at a time where most lights (lamps, pendant light things, paper lanterns, etc.) and other items were marked for sale at a somewhat manageable price, and for the whole month at that. I definitely took advantage of the deal. As other reviewers have stated, this isn't just another knock-off store trying to push cheaply made products. Like totally bohemian, hippie dippy, tie dye, twirly whirly lazy daisy! You'll find an eclectic mix of hippie, bohemian whimsical items here. The vibe is super chill, and everyone just kinda floats around gazing at twinkly, multi-colored lights and fabric with varying peaceful symbols of different cultures that cross over the time-space continuum of whoaaaaa. I really like this store. However, that happy little cloud (Bob Ross nod) you're floating on disintegrates when the sales staff start pestering. I don't mind them saying hello and letting me know they'll answer any questions I have. But I don't appreciate them looking me over, and then trying to suggest things in the store that I should buy based on what they see me wearing. This is what my sales lady said: "Oh hey, these necklaces would look greaaaaat on you with your gauges. Yeahhhhh." Imagine taking a piece of taffy and stretching it out slowly between your hands. That's how she talks, like, all the time man. Tooooooooooootally. A friend I was with whispered "is she stoned?" I said "maybe she does a lot of yoga??" Idk. Now I don't have a problem with hippies, I grew up in NorCal. But when I talked with her at length, I could tell she didn't really care what I had to say, and was just trying to make a sale. I really do like Art Gecko....it's a great place for groovy and eclectic worldly gifts for those hard to shop for relatives. I stop in at least 5 or 6 times a year to see what new inventory they have, find sale items, etc....I don't think I have EVER left empty-handed. I think some of the prices are a bit much, hence four stars, over five. Hint: Check the upstairs and back room for larger items, and deals....also, LOOK UP! I remember my first trip to Art Gecko- I was 17, the only girl on a school trip, and my head was swimming from all the gorgeous jewelry. I don't know what possessed me, but I decided to try on rings and I found a green Baltic amber cabochon one that looked somewhat like a turtle's back. It became probably my most prized possession and in my head, Art Gecko's been a treasure trove ever since. I'm pretty picky and so it's been a long time since something here's grabbed my attention like that... but on my last trip, I realized that, despite my initial out-of-place-ness in a hip-kid store like Art Gecko, I'm pretty much their ideal clientele. Their curtains are just loud enough to be funky, but classy as all heck. I wish I'd picked some up when I was there, but alas, next time. Their jewelry is still unparalleled, and somehow I came home with a gorgeous amber pendant, very much like my old ring (which went to Japan with a boy that now, I probably won't see again) and is my new favorite piece of jewelry. Their clothing is cute, if not really my style, but still, the scarves are super cute. I love this store! The only reason I'm giving it 4 and not 5 stars is because the prices have gone up recently and in my opinion things are starting to cost more than they're worth (especially since they probably bought everything for dirt cheap overseas). Still, if you like funky decor or jewelry, this is a must visit shop. Basically everything in my apartment is from here or Earthbound across the street. They have awesome textiles and curtains, interesting lamps, boho jewelry and even some furniture (there's more at the Monroe street store). Fun, funky little shop on State Street that deserves a visit when you are walking by. Lots of jewelry from costume pieces to sterling silver - there is lots to look at in many price ranges. Around Christmas, I wrote them about the purse, not to ask for a refund, but just to let them know how quickly it tore. They kindly offered to replace it. After several weeks, they let me know that the exact one wasn't available, but that they would send me another. It arrived soon after. My cousin bought me a painting from here for my birthday and I couldn't get home fast enough to put it on the wall. I don't feel you should bring children into this store (because there is so much to touch and break) but they are kid friendly and were extremely nice to my nephew. This is a lovely store, with all kinds of jewelry (including a huge ring selection), artworks and imported clothes. I go there mostly for fabric items. I don't know how they cram it all into their small space, but they carry curtains, bedspreads, cushions and more. The handcrafted rug and bedspread I brought home are just beautiful!
