I'm glad I stopped here! Very clean! I always try to support " mom and pop" places, sometime not so good, but this one gets two thumbs up.

I wouldn't have known about The Metropolitan Bed & Breakfast if I hadn't been caught in a very…read moresudden whiteout blizzard while driving by the New Salem, ND exit off I94. We weren't the only drivers seeking refuge that night, and the first hotel we called was full but referred us to The Metropolitan. I am very happy our first option was not available because The Metropolitan was an exceptional experience. The staff was flexible, courteous, communicative, and welcoming. I was completely rattled (due to the snowstorm, no visibility while driving, and worry about spending the night in our vehicle - either at a gas station or in the ditch (we weren't sure which it would be)) but the owner was patient through my inability to immediately find a credit card, forgetting my friend's last name and address (we were using her credit card), and my continual dropping of my cell phone because my mittens were too bulky. When we finally made it to The Metropolitan, we found an antique and very charming brick building with large windows, a cheery glow, and beautifully finished wood floors. Our room was easy to find as well as warm, well-lit, extremely clean, organized (plenty of toilet paper and towels), and ready for us to drop our bags and relax. The room also included a deep bathtub, microwave, and mini refrigerator. While I hope to not be caught in a whiteout again, I am hopeful that I will have an opportunity to spend more time at The Metropolitan and for a longer stay. I'm not sure what there is to do in New Salem (we left very early the next morning) but I would recommend going to the B & B just to enjoy the rooms, peace and warmth.

This place is a rare gem, a legit local building on Main Street has been gutted and turned into a handful of tasteful and very comfortable rooms with wonderful beds, nice shower and cool industrial chic decor. Don't you want to sleep right downtown across the street from the grain elevator in a small dairy town (the same one with "Salem Sue" the giant Holstein cow.) we took a nice evening walk around town, several nice bars and a couple of bakeries. Things only got better the next morning when the first floor cafe opened with yummy coffee drinks, paninis and nice looking waffles. Though there were also lots of nice free goodies in the hotel lobby for a free breakfast too. Take a risk, you'll leave with a happy heart and more of a connection to the land you're traveling through.

The water pressure in the shower was lacking, but it's an older building. Interesting to walk up into the hotel and walk the halls. Places you right back into high school. There aren't a a lot of amenities. Bring your own toiletries. But the rooms were very nice and comfortable. The room for a weekend was $96 a night, felt like that was reasonable. Will come here again when I'm back in town for fishing.

If you're in Riverdale, you don't have many hotel options. The Riverdale High Lodge is a…read morerespectable choice. As you might guess from the name, this used to be a school. The owner definitely put some money into this place in order to convert it into a hotel. In each room, you'll find a couple beds and a large TV. Unfortunately, my TV did not work and nobody was around who could help. You also will notice that the staff is the most diverse group you could imagine for rural North Dakota. The staff is primarily high school age students from abroad (So far I've met people from Kyrgyzstan, Korea, Russia, and Indonesia!). They are all very nice, but there are certainly some translation issues as you could guess! In order to check in, you may have to go into the restaurant area and flag someone down. It's not a big deal, but just good to know.T he nightly rate is about $90, which is bit high for the middle of nowhere, ND. The floors are on the thin side and you can hear every step taken in the room above you, so stay on the 2nd floor if you have the chance (there is no elevator though). I also recently discovered that this place has a gym and also a workout room. My personal preference (for the same price) is to stay elsewhere in town, but the Riverdale High Lodge is an OK choice!

I did a lot of research and most of the places around here are motels that don't look so great. I kept calling them "murder motels." This place is really decent. The rooms are decent sizes and the bathrooms are clean. There's a pool and a hot tub, which I haven't made use of but I've heard they're pretty nice. There's a tiny gym with two ellipticals, one treadmill, and a two dumbbells. It's not the best but it fits the bill for trips like these. The staff are incredibly friendly and accommodating. There's a free breakfast every morning with hot food (sausages, eggs, toast, Belgian waffles) and cold food (yogurt, cottage cheese, hard boiled eggs). They also bake cookies every night and leave them out in the lobby around 5 or 6. If you have to stay out here, I'd definitely recommend this place.

Some of the critics are perhaps comparing it to a big hotel chains. It reminds me of people going to other countries and complaining that they don't get the same service they are used to in the U.S. I think the idea was genius and admire the ambition and perseverance of making it happen and creating such a unique hotel. Instead, we had a phone number to call and have someone stop by the front desk to get us checked in. The room is nice. There's even a little "kitchen" area. I liked the knight accents, but felt like it needed a little more. My favorite part was the gymnasium, where you could throw some basketballs around. If you are looking for food, go down the street. They shouldn't even be serving food with the quality I received. I ordered the fish basket, and I'm not sure if it was the breading or the fish, but it tasted completely of mold and I couldn't eat it. My sister had the prime rib, which was completely raw on the inside, and a lot of it was fat. Her corn was hard and cold and just gross. I don't know why we had any hope for the dessert, but we ordered the raspberry cheesecake, and it was disgusting. First, it wasn't even cold, and second, it was hard. Do not eat here. And the service is so slow. I get it, it's a small town, but two hours for a meal is way too long. All in all, the room was nice, but save your money and eat at the other restaurant down the road.
