First, the facility is a bit hard to find because the front door is located in the back behind the baseball store but atleast it has a big parking lot so no issue there. Upon entering we were greeted by the staff and seated to prepare for our archery lesson. The staff was friendly, knowledgeable, and made the lesson fun. You know that when you are having fun that time seems to fly by so that hour archery lesson went by quickly. Hard to believe (I am not a trusting person), but Coaches Steve and Ruth at the Archery Program are just that - amazing professionals and good people. 18 weeks ago I was referred to Coach Steve Elkins by another coach, and yes I admit it, I was naturally suspicious and he intrinsically knew it. Coach Steve Elkins is a Level 3/4 teacher - he is Olympian standard. I didn't phase him in the least: Steve used his astounding heuristic empathy and assessment of my personality and moods. Coach Steve took me from an ornery, stressed-out grumbler to a calm, relaxed and perfectly trained archer. (I'm still a pushy perfectionist though). I can now hit gold target rings consistently, with perfect form, at 200 feet. Coach Steve is understanding, compassionate...and uncompromising in seeking perfect of form and function from his students. Coach Ruth is an Olympian, and head coaching of the program. She is sweet, quiet and has a hawk eye for students performance. I am leaving VA for professional reasons, but I'm carrying with me amazing gifts from a dedicated set of professionals who love what they do - and are just really good people to know. I found this archery area while trying to find fun activities to do in the DMV area since I love trying new things. I have done archery in the past in my youth, but it has been awhile since I've held a bow and arrow. The DC Archery Club, which meets here, practices on Saturdays. They have a free 1-2 hour lesson taught by a volunteer who has been part of this club for numerous years. She actually helped setup the electronic aspects for the club to make sure it has more of an online presence in this world. It's optional to donate to them, but they also note that you could donate $10-20 for those who could afford it to help keep the club alive/offering free lessons. I went at 1:45 pm for the 2:00 pm start time, and I had brought a friend with me. They have parking available (regular parking, not parallel), and it's free! When I arrived, they had greeted me with a bright smile, and Gorge, an older gentleman, also joked with me, making me feel like I'm already part of the family. I was tested for eye dominance, given gear quickly, and we were then taken to the lesson range. There were about 7 people taking the lesson for the day with two instructors. I love that the instructors took the process step by step and provided us tips as well. They did not overwhelm us with all of the information at first but instead focused on our form and then added more information as we got better at aiming at the target. At the end, balloons were setup for us to aim at. If we hit the balloon, we were also given one golden coin, which I loved the gamification aspect of things. It made things even more fun! At the very end, I even tried splitting an arrow (which I failed to do), but it was a fun experience. I'd say definitely give this a go! It's a really fun and welcoming experience. In addition, bring your own water! They have some bottled water, but if you're just visiting or trying it out, I'd say be kind and bring your own (be prepared). :) My advice: bring a hat, sunscreen/sunglasses, and bug spray. We're on the grass for all of it in direct sunlight, but there are some shady spot to rest. I've gotten quite a lot of bug bites from this experience!

I came to this DMV area range after deciding it wasn't worth the drive to Adelphi but also seeking…read moresomething a little more scenic. While the drive is actually quite easy compared to Adelphi from where I live, and the area much nicer, I have to say that the range itself is not. Major problem is the layout. It's excruciatingly ill thought out. I have never seen such a poorly laid out archery range in all my life and I am no stranger to archery ranges mind you. I know space is a premium in the DMV area but to design a range so small, with targets facing multiple directions and one nearly aligned right behind another is just insane and easily jeopardizes the safety of all on the range. The layout also has a real cramping effect on the range. This is exacerbated by the fact that the range is rather popular and has many meetup style clubs that conglomerate upon it during the weekend. Don't get me wrong, I think its great people do things like that but given the circumstance, this is just not the range for this type of thing. Things get even further complicated by the many different styles being practiced on this range in which some people need a particular target to use and then things become territorial. Some clubs (not all though) have a tendency to try and throw their weight around on the range creating problems. This can potentially happen at Adelphi too (archery 'coaching' and clubs is quite a DMV thing apparently), but given how well thought out the layout of the range is there, its less likely to occur. Needwood really looks like a mess actually at times. I think a redesign would benefit the range greatly. I now appreciate Adelphi even more despite how hard it is for me to get to it and regardless of how unappealing the area is.

Before giving the rave, I do want qualify my statement by saying this is only the second outdoor…read morerange I have ever visited. The first was the Adelphi Manor archery range in Maryland. Also, I would be considered a novice archer by most standards, though having spend 20+ in uniform, I have seen a few rifle ranges... Now with that said - wow! It costs $3 for two hours but there were proper targets posted so there was nothing else to buy. The most valuable thing for me was that the targets were staggered at 10 yard intervals. 10 yards all the way up to 60 yards. There were two other guys (only one shooting) while I was there and they were on one end so I could stagger my shooting first at the 20, then 30 and so forth. I made it all the way to 50 and stopped while the arrows were all accounted for. Something else I have never seen before, behind the firing line were racks to hang the bows. When you go down the range the bow can stay hanging (opposed to being left on the ground. Not far away, the PX and commissary were also superb so I expect to be back soon.

Absolutely poor and unprofessional service…read more Understandably someone has passed away (whether employee and/or owner); however is tremendously unprofessional to shut down the entire store; when you've actually accepted customers' firearms in your possession. The appropriate thing to do, is either SEND THE FIREARM(S) back to the shipper, CONTACT affected customers and advise them/us of the situation and provide necessary alternatives, OR continue to run the store with modifications to staffing levels or business hours. But to completely shut down, and leave a handwritten note on the door and transfer the business phone into a voicemail system with ONLY funeral arrangements is COMPLETELY absurd! Once I receive my order or once it's returned back to the original shipper; I will NEVER utilize this "business" again. The level of ridiculousness and the blatant inconsiderate nature of these acts, are appalling and unfathomable.
