We came back to Aromas At the Beach Food, Bar & Breakfast for the second year in a row, and somehow it was just as good (if not better) than we remembered. Everything here is PACKED with flavor. We tried a little bit of everything -- empanadas, fried yucca, chicken, soup -- and there wasn't a single miss. Every dish came out tasting fresh, well-seasoned, and like it was made with care. You can tell this isn't just your typical beach spot... this is legit. And the service? Just as impressive. Every table inside was completely full, so we sat outside on a beautiful day -- and even with how busy they were, the service was FAST. Our hostess was fantastic the entire time, super attentive and on top of everything. You'd never guess how packed they were based on how smoothly everything ran. The fried yucca was perfectly crispy, the empanadas were loaded and flavorful, and the chicken and soup tied everything together. Honestly, one of those meals where you keep saying "yo this is GOOD" after every bite. We made it a priority to come back this trip, and now it's officially a tradition whenever we're in Sunset Beach. In the old days, if you wanted great fresh fried seafood, you went to Calabash. Unfortunately, with an exception or two, that's not what you're going to get there, anymore. But you can get it here. Yup, it's a Peruvian restaurant, but it has some of the best fried fresh seafood I've ever eaten. I've had lots of Peruvian food, but didn't realize before that it entailed a different frying technique: corn not flour, gluten free, crispy as all get out. What's better is that Aroma's used fresh local seafood. There's a lot of other great stuff on the menu, too, like the flounder ceviche. But man, that fried platter! read more

I love your food, but your service...it needs work. I literally went to your restaurant on June 15th, sat there for 30 minutes while 3 of your employees sat at the front and no one even came to wait on us. Literally, 30 minutes. And when we walked out, and passed your employees, no one said a word. Here's the crazy part. When you first opened, I tried so hard to make a big order and you made it so hard. I eventually did make the order, and I loved your food. Your customer service needs A LOT of work. I went to the Mexican restaurant next door, enjoyed their food, and was impressed by their service. Second time visiting Aromas. I didn't think anyone could make black beans like my mother n law and these are just as good. We ordered a whole chicken for 3 with side dishes. So excited to have found this fabulous Peruvian restaurant! We went tonight for the first time but most certainly won't be the last. The space was very open and inviting. Loved the mix of beach decor with a splash of Peru. Also, seriously the nicest bathroom I've seen in a long time! We were seated immediately and our drink order was taken. For appetizer we had one beef empanada and one chicken empanada. Both were very good and very flavorful. We were also given 3 different types of sauces in various stages of spice. They did not skimp on the sauces and you could tell how fresh they were. We really liked the green sauce. For dinner my husband ordered The Jumping Cow aka Lomo Saltado. He really enjoyed it. I had a bite and it was excellent. For dinner I had the 1/4 white meat chicken with a side of rice and salad. The chicken was flavorful, the rice was delicious and the best part was more green sauce! Absolutely amazing! I read a review on Facebook so I checked them out. Very easy to find and park. I decided to do take out but you can dine-in as well. I had the chicken fried rice, chicken empanadas, and a slice of cheesecake. They made it to order which is fabulous, and the place is really cute. The owner was extremely friendly and we talked a while, he seems very excited about his restaurant and you can tell he loves the food and the customers. Next time we will dine in. This restaurant is very unassuming and looks small from the outside, but the inside is very spacious. I had the empanadas appetizer, chicken salad as my entree, and strawberry shortcake for desert. I rate each dish a 10/10. The servers were extremely nice, and I think one of the servers named Norma is the one who makes all desert. Will 100% return. read more

Went here after the Planetarium show last Friday. Prompt and very attentive service from Dar Lyne. (She is an "energizer bunny" in a super efficient way) The salad was fresh and plentiful. The potato soup was good, but nothing special. The white meat chicken had a large breast and tasty skin. The 4 plantains were delicious! The dark meat dish had a very small drumstick, but the thigh meat was a good size. Dessert sounded great but we were full. Plenty of seating inside and a few outdoor tables. Located in the strip mall shopping area behind Food Lion, it is pretty easy to find. It is about halfway down the strip and has a brightly colored sign over the door. Parking is adjacent to the building or across a traffic lane. There are several handicapped spaces near the front door. Walking in, the ordering counter is just ahead on the left with the main seating along the wall on the right. It appears most of their business is take out, which is what we were doing. We placed our order and then sat near the door to wait. Our food was ready in about 15 minutes. It was well packaged and stayed hot on the short trip home. The half rotisserie chicken was very good. The skin was very flavorful and the meat moist and tender. The accompanying plantains were cooked perfectly with a good sweetness without becoming mushy. The side salad was fresh and the yellow sauce for the dressing added a lot of flavor. The chicken fried rice was also excellent. The flavors were strong and pleasant with a good amount of chicken added. We also tried the yucca cheese bites which were certainly a hit. The yucca is apparently mashed and then rolled into a ball around a ball of mozzarella cheese, then deep fried. These were an excellent alternative to the typical mozzarella sticks at other restaurants. We also tried the mini empanada appetizer. Both the chicken and beef versions were excellent. I was in Sunset Beach, NC last week for lunch and stopped at Aromas At The Beach for some delicious Peruvian food. I ordered tequenos (which are cheese sticks) served with guacamole and a chicken salad in avocado halves. It was absolutely delicious. The chicken salad had some wonderful spices mixed in. The service was outstanding and I enjoyed chatting with my server and Julian, the owner. I definitely plan on returning next time I am in the area. read more

Went to this restaurant due to the proximity to Sunset Beach and the high ratings. The food definitely lives up to the hype! The rotisserie chicken is great and the ceviche is outstanding! They have a full bar but the liquor selection is very limited. We met the owner who was extremely friendly and when I mentioned the poor bourbon selection he said please tell me what you want and I'll have it next time you come in. Oh and the desserts are top notch as well. I highly recommend this establishment if you're in the area or live nearby. read more

She had the classic ceviche and I had The Mr. Eyermann rotisserie chicken sandwich. Both had so much flavor and were simply delicious. The staff and ambiance were so nice. Arrived at 11:18a on Tuesday. Hours are 11-9.... Locked up tight. Saw two people inside, no one came to the door to acknowledge or unlock. Walked back to the car and heard the lock bolt unlock. I really wanted to try the place after the great reviews. So.... I turned back around and walked in. Was greeted very coldly and I asked if they were open. Lady stated yes, just a bit late and asked if a table for one. Explained it was to go. Still rather a cold discussion- order chic and beef empanadas as well as the chic soup. I was told to come back in 10 minutes. After 10 minutes walked back in and the same lady almost didn't recognize me, but the order was ready. Food - chicken empanada was 5/5. Crunchy/soft pastry filled with chunks of chicken/filling in almost every bite. Beef 3/5, same delicious pastry, however the beef filling literally DRIPPED out, it was that runny. Filling was tasty, but you had to eat it like soup with a spoon and bits of pastry. Chic soup was tasty, but it was probably less than 3/4 of a one cup measuring cup. All in all hit/miss. Maybe they just had a bad morning, which led to the late opening and cold reception. I would certainly go back for the chic empanada - it was that good! read more

We went here after an afternoon at the beach and really enjoyed our food. The service was excellent and my 12-year-old daughter enjoyed her chicken and rice soup and plantains. Outstanding food and great service. Found this place when looking for a break from standard beach fare and we weren't disappointed. I would go back again and again just for the Ceviche appetizer. It was delicious and I could have easily made it my meal (if the kids didn't love it as much as I did) . The whole family also enjoyed the cheesy yucca bites and empanadas. One daughter wasn't done with fried seafood and ordered the flounder meal - hands down the best fish we ate all week. The portion was huge (easily 8 oz of fish), breading was super crispy and the fish was so moist. Aromas will be a stop every vacation. read more

It was our first time here as a family and everyone enjoyed their meals from vegetarian to pescatarian to carnivores, even the 4.5 yr old grandaughter. I know this is a fairly new restaurant and we wanted to give it a try. The order of tostones were two and a half tostones - small, greasy and certainly did not appear to be fresh (even though we did ask & were told "yes they were just made). The prices are just too expensive; the chicken certainly did not taste fresh; the beef empanada's crust should have been flaky but instead it was extremely hard (the beef inside was good but it had to be eaten separately because the crust was too hard to bite). The hostess (perhaps the owner) was very pleasant but the young girl that was our server simply could not wait to get away from the table. She would bring an overpriced glass of tea or the soda and immediately leave - no smiles, no greeting, hardly a word even to ask if we were ready to order - nothing - finally my husband said in the middle of placing our order, "Wait, don't run away, let me ask a question please". I know she was young & this was probably the last place she wanted to be, but we paid a lot of money to try this new restaurant and unfortunately for this local couple, it will be a while before we try it again - we'll let them get settled in and perhaps go through a tourist season before going back. The sandwich had really good bread and it was dressed well with lettuce onions tomatoes and mayo. No plain iceberg lettuce here. The 1/2 chicken was delicious.
