I've never had a massage before, but after a herniated disc and sitting behind a computer for a living, along with chronic migraines, I decided to go for it. I found Armory Massage through a web search, and was impressed by their wide range of offerings and reasonable rates. I got a 30 minute Integrated Therapeutic Massage, because I honestly didn't know what I needed. It was a great experience! I saw Tysheria, and she was super nice and very professional. She took my medical history, asked a bunch of questions,and then left me to get undressed and settled. The massage targeted all of my problem areas, and even some areas that I didn't realize were in bad shape. I only wish I'd gone for a full hour because it was so nice and relaxing. Their studio is a little hard to find, and Google maps doesn't send you to the right location. Your best bet in finding it is to look across the street from the Courtyard Marriott, locate the blue snake statue (Walt), and then find the black awning, and follow it to the door. Best massages of our life (and we've had quite a few!). They were different than anything we'd ever experienced and left feeling like we were floating. The techniques were unique and specific to our needs. Both Kathy and Michelle (?) were fabulous. The therapists received the 5 stars. If it were on facilities/location only it would have been 4 stars. There are no showers or dressing area, the bathrooms are cold and sterile and some massage rooms open right into the waiting room. But the actual therapy rooms are wonderful and they use sound machine with the music so you couldn't hear anything in the waiting room. Follow the long black awning back into the building and it's the first door on your left. Just across the street from the Courtyard Marriott. Finding it was a little tricky, but it obviously didn't stop me from getting a kick-ass massage. I got there a little early, Samantha introduced herself and gave me a short questionnaire to fill out. From there it was all just a bunch of laying down and feeling great. She did a fantastic job. She did this cool thing where she moved my leg around and my butt kind of massaged itself. I have not yet been able to recreate that magic. I'm really pleased with the fact that my stress level is considerably lower even after several hours of chasing my one-year-old around my house. Not many ppl know what osteopathic medicine is so we'll do a quick crash course before I dive into the review. It's relevant, I promise. For the doctoring world, there are MDs and there are DOs. You might recall seeing these letters behind your doctor's name but don't really think much about it. DOs are osteopathic physicians who believe that the body is a whole and we can use the body to accelerate healing. For example if you have asthma you will be treated with the meds necessary to control your symptoms but one might also take a look at your ribs to make sure that you can take full breaths, etc, etc. Now if we take conditions like stress or pain which we all know is being held in the body, then it's easier to see where osteopathic manipulation can be beneficial. It uses specific techniques to release stuck patterns of tension. I gauge a good massage therapist based on how many principles of osteopathic manipulation are used during a session. I don't want someone to just rub oil all over my body or beat the crap out of a knot in my back. The body is stuck in a pattern for a reason and I want someone who can coax and unwind my body. I have been to Armory Massage for a total of three times, completing a three 60 min massage package with three different therapist, and I am impressed. All therapists use some sort of body/muscle knowledge to understand why you are holding tension at a certain place in your body. Although this typically means that you are not just laying there relaxing and sleeping, your body is being moved and stretched and placed in various awkward positions, but you are fixing your body patterns rather than just putting a band aid on it. If you ever run across a DO who practices Osteopathic Manipulation Medicine, or OMM, it's definitely worth getting a session or two in. That is one of the things I missed most about my hometown. There are good massages and there are great massages. Great massages are associated with words like "jellyfish", "noodly", "pile of goo" - things that describe an overall feeling of loose and melting puddles instead of tight and rigid knots. Armory dishes out awesome massages with care. Moving away from my usual massage place in DC was hard but that is the life I live but I am so glad that I found this place. read more

I have gone to Sam twice now and she is amazing... she always works the knots out of my shoulders (where I carry the most tension) and I feel so much more relaxed when I leave... it's located right off the main chic area of downtown so parking is not easy to find, but once you are inside and relaxing on the table you forget all about it! Prices are about average... $65/hour for Swedish massage. They have great hours too... open a little later than most places... if you're looking for a relaxing way to spend the day I would recommend getting a massage from Sam! :) read more

SO I used Yelp to help me find a place for my boyfriend to get a professional massage since he had an athletic injury that I wasn't able to fully help him with. Not only did he say the room was uncomfortably well lit (he felt on display) but he said it was the worst massage he'd ever had, that mine were better. I thought he might be humoring me some until the nail marks showed up all around his neck. He said his masseuse seemed really sweet but inexperienced and awkward and had not bothered to clip her nails nor did she try to keep them out of the way. I never leave bad reviews anywhere, but not only did I have to massage him when he got home (literally what he went there for), but for the price he paid, we could have gone out to dinner three times. A professional massage is something either of us only splurges on every few years and we had he money to spend so it doesn't affect us that much but other people should know to be cautious. I tried this place out for the first time a little over a month ago, and I've been back twice since then! This was my first experience getting a massage and I am so glad I ended up at Armory Massage. I see Karen and she is nothing short of a miracle worker. I have a lot of pain in my neck and shoulders from overuse injury (working in a floral shop and bakery will do that to you), and massage has been more successful at alleviating that pain than even chiropractic work. To me, the essence of a good massage isn't just knowing where to touch but it is about a relaxation experience and this place was the personification of that.
