Visiting My Mistress Cafe, on their second day of trade no less, was calming despite their location adjacent to busy Sandgate Road. But with cafes a dime a dozen in Brisneyland what makes this one stand out? Good question so I wrote you a list: + A simple, no nonsense menu that carries through from breakfast to lunch. All your staple cafe items are there and I'm eager to head back after hearing one of the staff mention she loves to order the banana bread with a side of bacon and maple syrup. + It's spacious with plenty of seating for groups. + There's minimal wankery. It's a cafe, doing great cafe food, solid cups of coffee and that's it. Sure, they've included the super trendy Acai bowl but we'll give them that. Superfoods, YOLO. + There's plenty of street parking making it easy to get to without trudging on public transport + The staff are darlings and even though it was evident they were still finding their feet my order was on the table in front of me without delay. TL; DR: Brisbane's suburban expansion continues into 2015. This is another worthy contender for you to cross the river / leave the CBD / make an effort to dine at.

In the face of extreme humidity & an overwhelming number of new customers, the staff at My Mistress, handled themselves well. Sure, there were some long wait times & perhaps more tables or seating required but this will improve over time & a little patience from the general public will go a long way, in these first few days. We liked that the all day breakfast menu is a nice & simple offering with something for everybody. Including gluten free, & other dietary requirements available in request. They also make fresh baked goodies in house daily. Fittingly, My Mistress aptly categorises the menu as "Cheeky Flings" (for the simpler Toast, Fruit Loafs & Acai bowls $5-$10), "Main Affairs" (for the more substantial items $12-$18), & "On the side", for more extras like mushrooms, bacon, feta etc ($4.50). We had the: (1) Eggs Marilyn (organic caramelised onion & caraway rye, free range fried eggs, margaret river smoked ham, wilted spinach topped with creamy hollandaise sauce $17) (2) Eggs Monica (free range scrambled eggs on a corn zucchini fritter, blistered cherry tomatoes & a seasoned avocado smash $17) (3) Head Mistress (Baked free range eggs with house made spicy beans, sour cream & cheesy bread $18) plus extra chorizos. (4) Orange, pineapple, apple & ginger juice. ($6.50) All our dishes were delicious, & were very filling! Looking forward to coming back again soon, perhaps in a few months time to see how things have progressed since opening.

Something needs to be said for the arrogance of the owner, Alberto Alarti…read more 1. The cafe wears his name, which is fine. However, it also has a cartoon portrait of him as the business's logo. This was the first sign that Alberto had tickets on himself. 2. If you look at the business card, the first detail is "Alberto Alarti: Barista". Sure, baristas play a central role in a coffee shop, but I can't be the only one who thinks this is a bit much. Of the cafe business cards I've collected recently, Alberto's Shot is the only one that celebrates the work of one man (who I haven't ever seen work as the barista when I've been there). 3. It takes a certain sort of man to think that when his baristas screw up a coffee order (which is irregular here), he can abuse them in front of all of the customers and think his cafe won't suffer for it. It's not his barista's meagre mistakes that will ruin his business into the ground, it's his behaviour. It makes for an uncomfortable experience. I always want to go and hug the baristas afterwards, pat their hair and tell them it's going to be ok. Outside of this, Alberto's Shot is a good place to come for a caffeine hit (standard flat white/cap/latte is $3.80). The food's not bad either- the servings are huge. It's right down near the river on Cordeaux Street and offers a great place to seek refuge from those searing Brisbane summer days. The seating is predominantly outdoors (only 4 seats inside) which simply forces you to lap up the cool breeze that comes in off the river. Most of their business comes from residents of of Hill End and people going to and fro the ferry. It's best to visit this cafe outside of peak hours to avoid crowds, long waits, and the possibility of seeing Alberto flying off the handle.

Inside, the warm lighting highlights the extensive chalkboard menu above the counter. The inviting cake cabinet beckons as you stand there wondering what to order. Since I was full from lunch I was a little boring and decided to settle with a cold drink from their refrigerator. My Spring Valley juice doesn't give me much to say in way of recommendation of this place, but I really enjoyed the setting. It is a little place beside not much else but the road, so the view is not spectacular, but the trees make the courtyard feel somewhat enclosed and it is still a quiet, relaxing place. I have checked out some other reviews which were all very flattering, raving about the food, so I have made a mental note to return and see what all the fuss is about. That being the case, I was pretty sure that I'd never again be surprised by a breakfast sandwich, but I was very wrong the second I walked into Coffee Anthology. Star 1: How were the service and atmosphere? I like to think I do some pretty serious food research before coming to a new city, and that research lead me to bookmark Coffee Anthology. That research was quickly confirmed upon walking up to Coffee Anthology and seeing a line of what was easily fifteen people just for the takeaway coffee stand: impressive. Fortunately I had some time to kill, so I took up the opportunity to be seated right away and from there what was a stellar breakfast came out quickly. Star. Star 2: How were the portions relative to the cost? $17.00 AUD got me a good sized breakfast sandwich with an absolutely heaping portion of bacon on the side, which was good value. Star. Stars 3 and 4: How was the food? This was a genuinely stellar breakfast sandwich. So get this - I don't even like eggs benedict dishes. I don't love hollandaise sauce, but for whatever reason this sandwich really called to me, and I'm glad I gave in. The 63 degree eggs were brilliant and the hollandaise sauce was flavorful and lapped up by the huge croissant. The bacon was an added bonus and while I'm typically not a big bacon person the saltiness brought the whole thing into high gear. Brilliant. Two Stars. Star 5: Would you be excited to go back? I'll be thinking about this breakfast sandwich for months to come. Star.
