My furry baby Sammi passed peacefully today July 9th 2025. She was diagnosed with lymphoma last October. I'm so grateful for AZ Vet Oncology, Dr. Boshoven and all the staff here. My sweet Pomeranian Zoey was diagnosed with a soft-tissue sarcoma and we were sent here by our primary care vet. Dr. B recommended a revision surgery with their surgical team but unfortunately that procedure was unable to remove all the cancerous cells. He then recommended a short course of radiation. Zoey got one dose of radiation on the scar line to target the treatment directly on the area. We won't know if it's effective for several months, but I am confident that we're doing all the right things to treat her condition. Dr. Boshoven's "bedside" manner put us humans at ease and he was so gentle and kind to our little dog. Fingers crossed we do not need to pursue additional radiation treatments, but I'm grateful to have this team's support! read more

Dr.Boshoven is absolutely incredible. He explains without being condescending, listens and answers questions, does not rush you, and most importantly he is really good at what he does. My cat had I-131 radioactive iodine treatment with him. His hyperthyroidism had progressed to a point where his heart was stressed out, he was losing weight, and obsessively scratching himself from methimazole. Dr.Boshoven took every precaution to make sure the treatment was a success. We had an echo and various bloodwork done before treatment. The results have been life changing. Not only is my boy's hyperthyroidism gone and his T4s are healthy, but his heart murmur is also gone. In a short amount of time he's gained weight and is back to doing zoomies. I had so many questions going into this. I couldn't recommend Dr.Boshoven and his team enough. They are all knowledgeable and great at what they do. If you have a cat with hyperthyroidism, please don't wait until it gets scary. Come here and your child will be in good hands. read more

Dr. Boshoven was not a good fit for my needs or my dogs needs. He is pretty arrogant and aggressive with the oncology infomercial and won't let you ask questions or interject any concerns during his 30 minute schpeel about why you should spend $15k. He didn't even give me Us all the options that would have been possible for my dog. This is a very difficult and traumatic discussion for the pet owner and his personality was beyond upsetting. He also was sure to provide all of his credentials to let you know he thinks he's smarter than you are. read more

Of course AVO is a specialist you hope never to need to visit, but if you do, they are wonderful! Dr. Beaver is so compassionate, caring, and understanding. She gave us so many options for treating our dog with Osteosarcoma and really gave her true opinion on which would be the very best treatment option. Even after, unfortunately, the treatment wasn't successful, she went out of her way to find some alternatives to aid in Arya's care. Additionally, the staff is always kind and pleasant. Dr. Boshoven and his staff are truly a godsend. We took our Golden Retriever to numerous other oncologists, surgeons, etc for his second diagnosis of malignant melanoma and were never treated even close to the way that Dr. Boshoven and his staff treated us. He is incredibly knowledgeable, thorough, kind, and compassionate. My husband and I were blown away that he spent 1.5 hours sitting with us and talking to us, reviewing all of Cooper's records, and going over every available option with us. Cancer, especially this type, is incredibly scary, and we finally feel like we have the answers and plan that we have been seeking for the past 6 months through our tribulations with other doctors. Though we wish we could cure our dog, finding Dr. Boshoven and this practice was the next best thing. read more

Now, I have received a letter from the owner attempting to justify all the actions that these people have had towards me and one thing I should clarify so I'm not "a liar" is that the time I was running late was apparently 15 minutes, not 10 and they felt it very important to remind me of that so let me update this review to reflect my error of the how long I was running behind due to an accident that is completely out of my control and also I was in the wrong that day because I did cuss at her when she told me they weren't going to see me (40 minutes into my drive later) and as I was driving down the freeway the receptionist wanted me to take the phone off Bluetooth and I refused because arizona state law is that all devices must be hands free. Apologies that I didn't break the law to accommodate your request. Rudeness and disrespect is a perception, I'm not wrong because your perception differs from mine. If I say I felt a certain way, you can't say otherwise. I'm not perfect, nor do I pretend to be. I know I have my moments but when people actually do their jobs and treat me with respect, there are no issues, just ask AVO Glendale. The condescension in the letter was was the same I got in the office but at least this time I have it in writing. The letter (quite literally blaming me for every med error, scheduling error, that has occurred since we started with Gilbert and as if my attitude and sass came completely unprovoked) really? So your staff is completely devoid of all responsibility for their actions? Great way to do business. read more

I had previously taken my dogs to the Scottsdale location for their dental cleanings but I decided to use the Gilbert office due to the closer location from where I live. Getting there is a breeze from the 60, and the drive from Tempe is a lot nicer than taking the 101 or surface streets to Scottsdale. The parking lot is a little narrow and it doesn't seem like there are as many spots as the Scottsdale location which is located in a shopping plaza. I didn't have any problems finding a spot though. The dental office is part of a whole conglomeration of various veterinary specialist offices and shares space with veterinary opthalmology and dermatology. My appointment was at 8 AM and I got here a little early. Unfortunately none of the front office staff were here yet at 7:45 and quite a few other people and their dogs were waiting awkwardly with their dogs either in their cars or outside. I understand that the office doesn't technically open until 8 but I feel like not being able to enter the office at a reasonably early time and making us wait adds to the potential stress of an appointment. They did finally open 5 minutes before 8. At the counter there is a front office person for each specialty. The waiting room is fairly spacious with nice seating. We were taken back shortly and the front desk who doubled as an assistant went over the procedure for the appointment and explained all the paperwork to sign. We also arranged a pick up time. When my dog's dental cleaning was over I received a phone call from the tech saying he did great and there were no problems. When I arrived to pick my pup up Dr. Balke did an excellent job at explaining how everything went and went over the radiographs and blood work. The front desk/assistant was so friendly and engaging and I felt like my dog was given the best care and comfort by her and the other techs. Overall I'll definitely come here again due to the convenient location and friendly staff. read more

On June 4 I took my dog Jack to our vet because he was not acting like himself. She took a fine needle aspiration but told me more than likely he had lymphoma and started him on prednisone. The prognosis was not good and she suggested that I call an oncologist or keep him on the prednisone and he would have a few weeks left. Devastated, I called every veterinary oncologist in the state and could only find 5, four of which were accepting new patients and only one in Tucson, where we live. It would have taken 2 months to get him in here. I found out that was pretty typical and was beginning to give up hope that he would be able to start chemotherapy before he got more sick. The staff at AZ Veterinary Oncology put me on a wait list for cancels appointments and we were able to get in to see Dr. Beaver with Jack being on Prednisone for only 10 days. He was already in remission but she was able to get him started on the CHOP protocol and explained that since this is a standard chemotherapy, she could get him started and treat him until Dr. Klein in Tucson could see him. She even said that usually when she gets them started, Dr. Klein can see them earlier. Dr. Beaver sat with us for 30 minutes answering all of my questions and was so patient with me since I had to wear a mask, kept crying, getting the mask wet, and was kinda freaking out because my baby has lymphoma now. Since they are about 2 hours from my house, they tried to work with my vet clinic so that I could administer the second week of chemotherapy without having to come back. Luckily, because Dr. Beaver got him started on the CHOP protocol and did the initial assessment/exam, Dr. Klein was able to see him the next week. I'll forever be grateful to Dr. Beaver for this. She was able to start him on chemo when he was not "sick" and I think that helped me get a little extra time with him as well as putting my mind at ease that he would get treatment before he got too sick for it. read more

I am deeply thankful for Dr. Arkens at the Glendale location for taking this case quickly and advocating for a quick CT and stereotactic radiosurgery (SRS). Although I didn't know it at the time his oral tumor was "large"-and from their standpoint I don't think this case for them has/had a good prognosis because of the extent of it occupying my vizsla's right jaw. I knew it was a Hail Mary and I appreciate Arkens taking a chance on us. Thank you from the bottom of my heart. Otherwise, my goal in writing this review is in hopes that patients will read it and be better prepared for cancer, cancer treatment and how this office operates. That's my only intention here, to help others navigate this deeply sad, confusing and complex life challenge of having a pet with cancer. Here are 3 key components to grasp, followed by some humble advice on how to succeed where I didn't. 1...The first thing you have to recognize is that pet oncology is Big Medicine-and this office is no different. What that means is that layers of poor communication, clinical culture and a general lack of understanding of the pet (and their owner) pervade your treatment here. This is because SRS equipment and those trained to use it are not common-so in this case you have Pet Cure Oncology (a corporation of investors), MidWestern University (a massive training facility for vets) and Arizona Veterinary Oncology are all part of your animal's care with different competing demands. $12,000 is the entry price for treatment and an SRS machine costs millions. These all add up to varying constraints that can preclude these 3 entities from seeing you as a unique patient and more like...well...a service they perform. 2...These are specialists (and I have a met several) and NOT working vets. A working vet typically owns their own practice and is a generalist that works 6 days a week, calls you personally at 8PM to prescribe, soothe your anxiety, and generally care for your dog/cat. Their is an empathetic and caring connection to you as the owner. Not to generalize but you can recognize specialists by how they dress. Yes, they wear tailored skinny pants and dress shoes and well...look cool and professional (I worked in medicine and I looked like this as well!) In general they don't work weekends, they speak in unhelpful and unsympathetic clinical language and relay information through young vet techs even when your pet is seriously ill-but NEVER after 5PM (are you crazy the work day is finished-LOL). There is lots of explanations for this but I imagine delegation is believed to alleviate the demands of endless clients seeking specialists. You work with lots of young women techs at this practice (many who don't know your pet) to rope off the vet for competing demands that sadly don't apparently include you. 3...There is sparse after-care following SRS. In fact, Arkens chose to never see my pet before or during treatment. Part of this is understandable, in human hospitals radiation is not performed by the oncologist, it's by a highly-trained tech. They recognized that their will be side effects but their was no planning for the medications that were 100% NECESSARY to alleviate the suffering my dog experienced after 3 rounds of radiation. I did my best using baby aspirin, numbing throat spray before my working vet stepped in to put my dog on a strong pain killer, antibiotic, and anti-inflammatory. Thank God for him. OK so what to do- 1. Accept the limitations described above-SO YOU CAN focus on the outcome of your pet getting better. If you want SRS or any oncology treatment, your options are very, very limited. Just know what you want for your pet and stay true to it. This mind trick will keep you on track to advocate for your pet while being treated instead of feeling victimized by the process. 2. You don't know what you don't know. So you have to ask as many questions as you can (even when you are sad, depressed, overwhelmed and disgusted by your animal's care). If they subjugate you to clinical speak-rally and keep asking until you understand. Don't give up. Call again and again. 3. Don't be meek. You feel sad, but keep at it. Question why they want to do X. You know your pet best. There are so many moving parts in oncology that you have to stay in the game. Remember your pet can't speak up for itself. Rally for the vet to see your pet at the initial meeting, during the CT or at radiation. Hopefully this will improve care as well as show that your pet is not just getting a service but they represent pure love to their owners. 4. Research and learn as much as you can. Cancer is tricky, cancer care is even trickier. You will figure things out that the office staff is missing and that the vet has no time to consider. Trust yourself and take action. 5. Lastly, it is imperative that you have a good (make that excellent) working vet who will call the specialist, prescribe and be a force for good in your pet's care. read more

Not the easiest job to perform and deal with on a daily basis but the staff couldn't be nicer. When you deal with mostly cancer for your furry friends life is not the same but the they seem to care and doing everything they can to help and give your pet a renewed outlook. The only reason for 4 stars is the incredible difficulty to get in at first. Once you are a (your animal) is in the system things move quickly but getting there is a drag. read more

While the medical services rendered at this office are sometimes top-notch, dealing with the incredibly unprofessional reception staff is a nightmare that does not warrant a visit except in the most dire of circumstances if there is literally no other choice. You will frequently and consistently be given false information. In the course of several phone calls I was given the following information: -There are no appointments available until December. -There is an open appointment on October 19th, but I have to get approval to make it so call back tomorrow. -The person you spoke to last was just lying, and did not make any note or request to get you in on October 19, but we have an appointment on the 21st. -Rather than an appointment, the oncologist can call you back and give you his opinion on the notes from your primary vet. (He did not.) This is a constant problem; everyone at the receptionist desk is NOT on the same page. Imagine dealing with this time after time, wading through all of this nonsense over and over again whenever your pet needs help. I referred another animal suffering from cancer here; after a week of phone calls trying to get some form of response other than "I'm sure that he'll review your case when he has time," the animal passed away. It is incredibly stressful. And at the end of it all you're left with an office that is simply incapable of helping you a lot of the time. read more

Our bulldog London was diagnosed with canine lymphoma and we were referred to Arizona Veterinary Oncology. Dr. Beaver, our oncologist was amazing. I have never known any medical professional that cares so much for her patients and their families. Dr. Beaver outlined our options and never pressured us into any treatments we didn't want to do. She took the time to explain everything as many times as we needed. She would even call us on Saturdays to check on London. Anytime we needed to come in for any type of emergency she was available. While I hope we never need to visit Dr. Beaver in the future, I would highly recommend her and her staff to anyone who's pet is battling canine lymphoma. read more

I just left Arizona Veterinary Oncology a couple of hours ago with very sad news. My Zoey has two types of cancer and at 13 1/2 there isn't much that can be done without the end result being the same. I called on the morning of 08/31 to ask about pricing for a certain procedure. The lady who answered the phone sounded uninterested in assisting me and did not give me her name. In response to my inquiry she said that they "don't give out pricing and it's typically done in the consultation." I wouldn't really have had a problem with this answer if she hadn't sounded so annoyed that I had bothered to ask. I said thank you and she hung up on me without saying anything else. She didn't even try to offer to schedule me for a consultation. I don't think it's unreasonable to want transparency on what I will be getting into financially before spending money on a consultation appointment. I have called two other treatment centers and they each were happy to give me the total cost upfront over the phone. Maybe this lady was having a bad day or something but it was enough to turn me off from this place completely. First impressions are important. read more

After my cat was diagnosed with cancer, I was referred to AZ Vet Oncology. The Gilbert office, which was an hour drive for me, was the one I had to go to for possible radiation treatment. My visit there was wonderful. the staff I dealt with was kind. Dr. Boshoven was amazing. He got down on the floor with my sweet cat and was so patient and caring in his examination. He spent a full hour with me explaining in detail all my options and answering all my questions. He never made me feel rushed or pushed me to make any decision. He was totally understanding and concerned for our situation. Then his nurse came in and went over everything again to be sure I was comfortable with the decisions. They also followed up a week later to see how she is doing. I have to say this was the best visit I've ever had to a doctor, whether for pets or people. Even though it was for a terrible reason they made the experience as good as it could be. If you need a pet oncologist, this is definitely the place to go for help! read more

My husband and I were very disappointed with Dr. Boshoven and his medical assistant, who returned my call today at 5:00 pm. The medical assistant (a man) was so eager to get off the phone and not answer my questions, to where he kept saying, "Okay?" (as in, are we finished?). I asked him what were the test results? Dr. Boshoven told us at our staging appointment a little over a week ago that he would have the results in 4-5 days. The assistant said that since they were unable to get a biopsy from the lymph nodes, nothing was sent in. Dr. Boshoven did tell us at the end of our staging appointment that he couldn't get anything from the lymph nodes, but he didn't say that was it. In fact, he went on to tell us he would contact us in 4-5 days with results. I told the assistant that, and he had no response. I said so we don't even know what grade the mast cell tumor is? He said no. The good news, however, is that the blood work was fine and that the MCT has not spread to my dog's major organs. We spent $1,000 for the blood work, ultrasound and x-ray?? I told the assistant twice that I was very dissatisfied (after all, we'd been waiting for Dr. Boshoven's call for the results). The assistant said nothing. Didn't even apologize..he just wanted off the phone. We do not recommend Dr. Boshoven. The front staff had great customer service, but Dr. Boshoven's talk with us (after the staging tests) felt like a memorized speech he tells 20 times a day. Although he said they tried unsuccessfully to get a biopsy from the lymph node, he then went on to say he would call us in 4-5 days. We. Waited. For. That. Call. desperately, only to find that there wouldn't be a call, if I hadn't called this morning to ask for the results. Our feelings tonight are raw and we feel like Dr. Boshoven lied to us; or he didn't really care about us. We can say with certainty that his medical assistant didn't care about us. read more
