I brought my 7-week-old Great Dane puppy to Topaz Vet Clinic while searching for a new vet in the Tempe area. I came in for a minor skin concern and left questioning reality itself. While examining my puppy, the doctor confidently informed me that my dog could not be 7 weeks old because he had his baby teeth grown in and was "more like 12 weeks at minimum," thus my dog was not a Great Dane at all. My puppy was taken to the back for a closer look, where I could overhear staff making snide jokes about his supposed breed identity crisis being called a Chihuahua Great Dane mix. To add to the fun, they changed his birthday in their system to make him 12 weeks old without telling me, because why let the owner in on that decision? I got a second opinion elsewhere, where the vet confirmed what I already knew: he is a purebred Great Dane. He's now 12 weeks old, 30 pounds, perfectly healthy AND still not a Chihuahua. I'd personally be hesitant to trust a vet that can't recognize one of the most recognizable dog breeds out there, but that's just me. If you're looking for medical care and a surprise rebrand of your dog, this might be your place!! read more

Dr. Bourne has been our family's Veterinarian through our decades of Shelties and now our third generation of Jack Russell Terriers (brother and sister, Petey and Darla). Even after seeing three different veterinarians at this place for a fast growing mass on my Frenchie, they would only keep prescribing pills. After months of waiting to finally see the person that could actually perform the removal, it was too late and the mass spread. I blame me for believing in what the personnel were telling me and not going elsewhere after the first visit. When I made the decision to not have my dog not go through any more pain, I had them put him to sleep. I told them I was on my way to see him before putting him to sleep, but they did it before I arrived. My 12yo best friend is now gone. read more

I brought my cat in after he suddenly became very sick. He would not move, only ate if I hand-fed him, and winced when I picked him up. Hes an inside cat only, so i knew it wasnt a physical injury or caused by an accident. The initial deposit was $78 just to schedule an appointment. At the first visit, they ran $277 in bloodwork but refused to prescribe antibiotics "until they knew more." They only gave me mild pain meds (included in the $277) to cover only 5 days. The bloodwork came back clear the next day, which was fine, but my cat was still not doing well. They then required a urine sample, which made sense, so i agreed. Their "urine kit" cost me $16 and was basically a cup of beads, pipette, and vial. I had to buy a better kit on Amazon myself. When I finally collected a sample, their testing cost another $70 to perform. My own at-home tests (from the same sample i gave them) showed white blood cells, leukocytes, protein, and ketones, which are all clear signs of infection. But when I begged for mild antibiotics while waiting for their more in depth results, they refused saying they needed the results before they could do anything. A few days later they told me his urine was "clear" (contradicting my two at-home results) and pushed $315 x-rays and, if that did not work, a $750 ultrasound. I asked for a copy of the urine results to compare them to mine, but it was never sent. At this point my cat had been sick for over a week and our pain meds had run out. Desperate, I agreed to the x-rays, paid the fees, and was told a few days later his results came back clear and fine... And only then, after more than 10 days of suffering and over $756 spent in total, did they finally relent and give him antibiotics!! That treatment worked within a day or so. Exactly what I had asked for on day one and suspected to be what we needed. The staff were polite, but the entire process felt drawn out and predatory. Instead of helping my sick cat with the obvious first-line treatment, they stalled with unnecessary tests, racked up charges, and let him suffer until I caved. Who knew you needed x-rays completed before giving out simple antibiotics?? Yes, they eventually helped, but for $756+ and at the cost of my cat's suffering. I will not be going back. If you choose this clinic, expect high costs, delays, and a refusal to provide basic care without multiple expensive tests first. read more

First time for our new dog and a first run at a new vet. They were very efficient and polite from the front to the back office. Only thing I'm not a fan of is taking the dog to the back room for testing and shots. Have always been a fan of transparency and the doctor should be able to treat my dog in my sight. Dr. B is hands down the most caring vet I've ever met. I honestly can't say enough good things about him. He's not only amazing during appointments, but he actually responds to emails afterward if I forgot to ask something or if something new comes up--which no other vet I've seen has ever done. Most places make you come in for every little thing, but Dr. B really goes above and beyond. We live in Scottsdale and would happily drive even further to keep seeing him. Dr. Bourne was incredibly helpful in figuring out his recurrent UTIs and sent me articles that improved the way I manage his care. I also got a puppy last year and knew I wanted her to be seen at Topaz as their treatment of my pets has been outstanding. My puppy loves their vet techs and Dr. Ferrari, and their approach to treatment has always been beneficial and understanding of constraints. I've been coming here for a year and I love this place. The first time I went I saw Dr. B. He was so friendly and made me feel like I was an old friend he was catching up with. I told him I'm a teacher and he shared that his mom is a teacher and really respects what I do. He even gave me a small teacher discount. It was a lovely interaction. I felt comfortable leaving my dog in his care. My dog goes frequently to get his anal glands expressed (not fun for him) and the girls are always so sweet to him! You can really tell they loves animals. My dog is scared of everyone but they do such a good job being gentle with him. I love the family feel here and the prices are better than anywhere else I've been to. If you want to be treated like a part of a family come here. New patients get $25 their first exam. Dr. B, Dr. Marske, and Dr. Bourne are far and away the best vets I've ever had. They truly love the animals they care for and don't pay you lip service. They come from a place of honesty, kindness, and professionalism when it comes to the level of care they provide. My pit/mix had a hard run over the last two years of her life and they were vested in helping me understand all options, but were clear to advise how it would impact her quality of life. They were patient and never pushed me decide one way or another - they respected my choices as a pet owner to choose the care that was right for me. When the time came to hire an in-home pet euthanasia physician to put her down comfortably, Dr. B called to simply thank me for giving her a life filled with love. EXTREMELY disappointed in my experience with Topaz. I first Started seeing Dr M & everything was fantastic. She was super attentive, discovered issues with my pup that previous vets overlooked, and truly seemed like she cared for my fur baby. I was taking my pup in every couple of weeks and getting new tests done regularly to track progress. I was switched randomly during treatment to Dr B and everything went downhill from there. I'll save the long paragraph, but it ended with my dog having an allergy flair up 6.5 months from his last visit after finally getting everything under control. I called to get a quick Rx and was told I had to come in for an appt since it was "over 6 months" and 6 month is their max for them to prescribe without seeing the animal. I missed that by mere days & this was for a known issue that a vet visit would do absolutely nothing for. I told them I was extremely disappointed in that decision and that I would just go to a dermatology specialist since that was previously recommended anyways. Now, I tried to get his Rx filled for a long term & incurable illness he has and the pharmacy was told by Topaz that they're denying the refill because we're not current clients. Topaz (or possibly just Dr B) just puts on a facade so long as you're spending hundreds of dollars PER MONTH in visits to them. Money hungry and unwilling to help if your animal is stable and just needs a little help here and there. So now my dog is going to without his medicine (that is REQUIRED DAILY to keep his Valley Fever in check) for who knows how long while I find another vet since everywhere has multiple-week waits for new patients. read more

This review is long overdue. Topaz is an amazing clinic and I had been taking my dog to Dr. Berthiaume for a few years. After moving further away from the clinic and taking a job with unpredictable hours I started going to a vet closer to my home, but when my dog needed surgery, I reached out to Dr. B for his opinion. Here's why: I've experienced plenty of vets over the years, but Dr. Berthiaume is one of the most considerate, compassionate, and knowledgeable veterinarians I've come across. I've never doubted how much he cares about my pet or whether my dog is getting the best treatment. I trust his professional opinion 100%. Additionally, he has amazing support staff. Staci is lovely and I've enjoyed the days when she's the person to greet us, she's always willing to help. Genesis is an absolute angel; so kind and always with a smile on her face and plenty of patience. Traci has always kept me informed and it's clear she's committed to the care of my dog. Katie is also a welcome face, very friendly and helpful. Everyone at Topaz treats my dog like he's special and makes it clear they are invested in his well-being. I ended up bringing my dog back to Dr. B for the surgery and he went above and beyond to ensure my little guy had a good recovery. My former roommate first recommended Topaz to me over 6 years ago and I feel like we hit the jackpot. Even with moving to the Mesa/Gilbert border we've decided we're not taking our dogs anywhere else. Aside from regular check ups and such over the years, I've had the unfortunate (yet fortunate) experience of visiting Topaz at least once a month, if not more, for the last couple years until our sweet boy passed in December. We've had appointments with Dr. Marzke, Dr. B, and Dr. Bourne throughout the years and they have all been wonderful to work with. They are not ones to jump at aggressive and expensive options unless absolutely necessary. They also are responsive - I've appreciated being able to email photos of my dog when new symptoms arose and having responses relatively quick. The receptionists have also been helpful at squeezing last minute appointments in when we absolutely needed one. I never feel awkward showing up for appointments as the receptionists, techs, and vets themselves have always been warm and welcoming. Even with our new girl, who's a drastic change behavior-wise from our boys, everyone has been patient and understanding of her and her needs. Can I give 100 stars? I have seen MANY vets in my lifetime, but none have compared to the quality of care I receive at Topaz Veterinary Clinic. I recommend them to everyone I know, and drive quite far out of my way to only bring our dogs there. This was my first time here and it was wonderful. Started with a nice greeting from the receptionist who immediately began our exam (never did have to sit in their waiting area), we then made it into an exam room where a tech came in and preformed the initial assessment. She informed me that if the vet was busy she would send in another tech to have my dogs nails trimmed. Didn't ever meet the second tech moments later the vet was in the room, answered all of my questions throughly and provided a comprehensive exam and explained the whole process. She then took my dog for his nail trim and vaccinations and was back in a flash. Overall we were in the office less than 30 minuets. Highly recommend this Vet and all of the staff. I came here several times. The front office staff and Dr. Marzke are all very nice people. This review is based on three visits with emphasis on the most recent one, in which I took my cat in to have a general exam. My cat is 8 years old, feisty, and has all her claws. Essentially she's a cat. She came out of her crate unhappy and growling; I'm sure my girl was smelling all kinds of other animal scents in there and was fearful. Dr. Marzke appeared visibly uncomfortable touching her at all and was not able to complete the exam. She was checking for lumps and things for maybe five minutes before she said she could go no further because my cat was still growling. She didn't try to bite her and hadn't even really swatted at her, yet the exam was already over. I was really confused as to why she didn't get some of those long vet gloves on and continue? I know my cat has claws, but this woman is a capable vet, and I assumed she has dealt with unhappy animals before... When I cut my cats nails at home, she hates it! And I put oven mitts on and power through. I was only charged for a portion of the exam which was fair, but it wasn't really about the money to begin with. I left feeling disappointed because my cat did not get a thorough exam, meaning I had no feeling of relief knowing that she was in good health. I was also informed that she could have exams while under anesthesia since she was unwieldy. No thanks. I don't doubt that Dr. Marzke is intelligent and nice, but I don't think people that own cats with any amount of sass should come here. read more

Last year our friend recommended us to Topaz and we've been taking both of our dogs here ever since. Not only do they take great care of our dogs, Dr. B and his staff remembers all of our names and is so friendly and welcoming. They are very honest and never try and tack on things our dogs don't need. I just got off the phone trying to set up an appointment and the receptionist was curt and rude. I was asking questions to figure out what your hours were and what times worked best for my schedule. I didn't even get to ask anything when the receptions said "You can call around and ask to see if anyone else has earlier options." It was extremely rude and I didn't even have a chance to ask what the next weekend availability was like.
