While we were in Phoenix, our friend took us on a tour of Arizona State University. She's a proud alum who still supports the school, so she was definitely on a mission to convince my teenage daughter that ASU should be on her college list. Unfortunately, it was over 100° that day, so she had a pretty tough sales pitch! She started by showing us her old dorm, which happened to be very close to the school where she was studying. That was actually really nostalgic for me because I still remember sending snail mail to her dorm back in the early 2000s. It was fun to see where she had lived all those years ago. One of the things I really liked about the campus was all the little spaces tucked away throughout it. There were secret courtyards where students could sit outside and study, tons of seating, volleyball courts, and plenty of areas that seemed designed to encourage students to actually spend time together and build a community. I was also impressed by how secure everything felt. Most of the buildings were locked, with the library and the Memorial Union being among the places we could actually go inside. The library was huge, quiet, and had tons of breakout rooms, making it look like a really comfortable place to study whether you wanted to work alone or with a group. The Memorial Union was another highlight. Instead of feeling like a traditional college cafeteria, it had all kinds of chain restaurants and food options. There was even a barbershop on campus, which I thought was a great convenience for students who might not have a car or simply don't want to leave campus for basic services. Transportation also seems to be a big part of campus life. We saw everything from bikes and skateboards to scooters, and there were plenty of places to lock them up. Between the different transportation options, walkability, and security measures, it seemed like students could get around without needing a car. And the buildings themselves are really unique. The "Wedding Cake" building definitely caught my attention, and I was especially excited to see the building designed by Frank Lloyd Wright because I'm a fan of his work. There's a lot of interesting architecture throughout the campus, so even just walking around felt like sightseeing. Even though it was brutally hot, I liked that there were places where you could duck inside and get some air conditioning. The campus also seemed very walkable, which I imagine would make a big difference during normal Arizona weather--not necessarily during our 100°+ tour day! We didn't really get to experience the academic side of ASU, so I can't speak much to the actual education or specific programs. This was more of a general campus tour where we got to see the larger spaces, student areas, transportation options, and overall layout. From what I saw, ASU looks like a fun place for college students to create their own community while getting an education. Our friend may not have completely convinced my daughter--especially while she was melting in the Arizona heat--but it was definitely an interesting campus to explore! Forks up! read more

GORGEOUS CAMPUS w/ MODERN EDGE! ASU almost felt like it was too good to be true when my family and I drove through it. This is the definition of a college city, the Tempe Campus is HUGE. There's tons of housing, education facilities, and sports venues. Some of them are by the Town Lake! All of the buildings looked fresh and inviting. I visited during the off-season (winter break) and people were still roaming the campus enjoying the many amenities and eateries nearby (or should I say inside?). It seems like ASU is the heartbeat of Downtown Tempe, I never felt overwhelmed, I just felt this warm, scholastic pride for Tempe's esteemed campus. I definitely want to visit Mullet Arena soon to see some Sun Devils hockey! read more

My daughter is a freshman this year and move-in date was worse than any nightmare you could've ever had. They tried to be real organized and nice. The first load at the second load we are ignored. It was 110° and we were carting around 60 pounds of stuff no one would let us use a box or a cart or anything they all said no no no even though she's a freshman even though we're moving in even though it is Sunday technically still in move-in day I can't help you can't help you THIS US WORST EXPERIENCE WE HAVE EVER ENCOUNTERED!!!!!!!!! Your people don't give a rip about their students or their students families. They couldn't have been more apathetic if we were bleeding to death on the sidewalk. read more

Ever since I toured colleges with my daughter back in the day, we still enjoy visiting campuses now. Quality/Quantity - Cool University. Go Sun Devils! Some facts: #1 Public university chosen by international students. #2 In the US for employability (public schools). One of only two universities to achieve net zero emissions. And wow, so many awards! See their website. Etc, etc, etc. Endowment $1.6B. Atmosphere - Cool atmosphere. The students are just starting now. Enjoyed seeing all the freshmens in their school gear, colors, etc. As school is just starting, the students have not crowded the restaurants or bars yet, lol. 57k+ students in Tempe. 62k+ students online (including Starbucks employees who earn free courses). Service - N/A, self service. Gave ourselves a tour. Price - Free for me, as I only came to visit. Owner Comment - Congrats on your success since 1885: Territorial Normal School (1885-1889). Though there are a number of different Arizona State University campuses, the large campus that most people not familiar with ASU think about is the Tempe Campus. This campus offers a liberal arts college feeling with many with many buildings, students, staff, faculty, and resources. Similar to many other large campuses or schools across the country, it feels like it is always under construction as new buildings, athletic facilities, and residence halls are built each year. As ASU is the nation's largest public university between online and in-person students, the Tempe Campus is the largest of the campuses. At the Tempe Campus, every student has the potential to feel connected with resources and it there is certainly always something happening whether at the Memorial Union or Student Pavilion, at the Gammage Auditorium or Sun Devil Fitness Complex, or in the residence halls or any of the athletics facilities. Approximately 12,000 students live on-campus, and the majority of more than 80,000 ASU in-person students take courses on the Tempe Campus. While campus resources are easily located in the Student Services building and most academic offices with some located in the Memorial Union and Student Pavilion as well, literally every building on campus has some student services of some sort. The ASU staff, faculty, and partners certainly try to do everything they can to support all of the students to ensure they are set up to succeed at ASU. Originally founded as only a fraction of the Tempe Campus of today in 1885, the campus has grown by leaps and bounds over the years. Even a student who graduated 15-20 years ago would be surprised in what the campus looks like today. In fact, I've spent many of the last 15-20 years on the campus, and I barely even recognize it any more today compared to when I was there almost 20 years ago. Even now, big construction projects include the Novus Innovation Corridor (a mixed-use development project combining residential, office, retail, and hotel space) and a new residence hall on the west side of the Tempe Campus. In fact, as of 2022, there were more than 150 construction projects in the works across all ASU campuses. In addition to new happenings on campus, there is also always something new happening in the Mill Avenue District (Downtown Tempe). As the campus continues to grow, the number of buildings on campus continue to increase. In addition to more commonly visited areas like Palm Walk, the Memorial Union, Student Pavilion, and Student Pavilion, there is the Hayden Library with its underground entrance and the Gammage Auditorium with amazing productions. There is the ASU Art Museum, A Mountain, and Old Main. Then there is the University Club, Creativity Commons (with the innovative Dreamscape Learn hub), College Avenue Commons, Sun Devil Campus Stores, Mountain America Stadium (formerly Sun Devil Stadium), and Desert Financial Arena (formerly Wells Fargo Arena). My favorite hidden gem at ASU is the Secret Garden in the middle of Dixie Gammage Hall, right next to the Hayden Library. Needless to say, there is something for everyone on the ASU Tempe Campus. At the Tempe Campus, every student can drive their own experience as they engage in the events and resources on-campus while attending classes, getting an on-campus job, landing an internship or full-time job, joining clubs and organizations, attending many free events and activities, and so much more. The Dean of Students Office (in the Student Services Building) and the many student services offices at ASU Tempe are always there for students, and it's easy to find your way towards graduation and your future when taking advantage of these resources. My alma mater. I'm a longtime Sun Devil and bleed maroon and gold. I grew up in Tempe and have spent my whole life driving by this campus. My Grandmother had ASU football season tickets for many years and took me to games at a very young age. ASU football was the only football we had in the Valley until the Cardinals came to town in '88. I was on the track team in high school and we ran up "A" mountain many times during practice. My high school was down the street from ASU and I knew I would be going to college here since day one. Arizona State University resides in the heart of downtown Tempe and was established as the Territorial Normal School in 1885. The main campus is a beautiful campus. Other ASU campuses have sprung up around the Valley over the years and are located in the West and East Valley and in downtown Phoenix. The Valley Metro light rail shuttles students between the Phoenix and Tempe campuses. ASU has a large online enrollment too. Sparky the Sun Devil is their official mascot and made his first appearance in 1951. I graduated with a Bachelor of Science degree from the College of Liberal Arts and Sciences. I enjoyed my experience here at ASU. There were good times and bad times during my years here. I spent a lot time in the Life Sciences building and in Noble library. I rode the Flash buses and walked through the Palm Walk everyday to classes. I still today will run around the track field in front of the SRC and will walk through the MU for a quick bite. These days I stay connected to ASU by attending football, basketball and baseball games and going to an occasional play at Gammage. I am proud to have my name on a brick on the plaza at Old Main - ASU's oldest building. I know everyone has different experiences with the college that they attended. But I'm a proud Sun Devil and thankful for my time here. Go Devils! read more

My experience at ASU was disgusting. All my classmates were extremely unfriendly. There was no social interaction and no sense of community at all. I went to art school in Painting and the teachers didn't know how to paint properly well. the art they make is very stupid. I was forced to write tons of essays instead of learning how to paint. The art they exposed at their galleries was extremely tacky and horrible. I felt that my time and money were completely worthless and I hated being graduated from this school. If you are elderly seeking to finish or add to your education do not waste your time applying here. I had four years of university in the 1970's including A's in astronomy. What the admissions advisor had to say about that "Well, Pluto is no longer a planet" A completely tacky and catty way to diminish a person's accomplishments. It appeared from his statement that it would now "take me an additional four years to obtain a degree" after already having spent four years that ALL of my credits were to be disallowed. Were I 30 years old in lieu of 70 every credit would be rightfully credited. Age discrimination is alive and well at ASU, right Tony? I am surprised Federal funding is even available to them. But, if you get paid by the credit hour then it "pays" to disallow credits and re-charge for them. In this case it does not pay them at all because I withdrew. The phrase "valued by who we include not exclude" is the core principle of Arizona State University's (ASU) New American University Charter....... nothing could be more distant from the truth. Were I 30 years old in lieu of 70 ALL the credits would transfer. Since I am 70 in lieu of 30 NONE of them would according to the advisor Tony. Age discrimination is alive and well at ASU. read more

There's lots of security around that are extremely nice and ready to recommend places to see and eat. There's several bookstores available for souvenirs. This University has gone down hill fast. They don't have the infrastructure to handle thousands of students they've let in, therefore, students go underserved by advisement and other crucial services. The education is very basic and very watered down. My first semester left me trying to justify the seven thousand dollar price tag. I really felt like the professors there were nothing more than proxy graders for tests because they taught nothing other than the occasional how-to video. Everything I learned was from Linkedin Learn and Youtube videos they posted, along with a bunch of PDF's that were nothing more than chapters scanned from books you could get at the local library. This University is more expensive than the average public University, so save your money and time and find a different school, or just do what they do, and sign up for a Linkedin learn membership and go scan books at the public library. read more

As a current student, and ex-student from other Colleges and Universities I strongly do NOT recommend going here. There is absolutely no help when you need it, the cost is absolutely outrageous and not worth the money, for the online classes you might as well just watch YouTube videos that actually explain stuff/ you WILL learn more and they explain better (yes, they are that bad), and the professors are absent and don't really assist in learning at all - they have pre-made videos to watch and that's it = 0 teaching involved. Literally also had a professor put a fake email on the syllabus that didn't even work when i tried to reach out, or other's putting a phone number they never answer during their open business hours . As a Wildcat becoming a Sundevil, i was hoping there wouldn't be that much of a difference, but honestly this was a choice that I truly regret. I do hope they get better, but to say they are ranked number 1 in AZ, or up there in general as educators is just a lie. PS: Their academic advisors are in sales as well and will NOT recommend what is best for you as a student, your best interest as a student is NOT in their agenda - what is best for the University as they try to fill the classes they need filled and make more money is all they truly care about. ASU only cares about your money, not you. They will try to get as much money as they can possibly get out of you, charging fees upon fees with little to no explanation. Good luck at this place! They really don't care about your mental or physical health - they only care about possible liabilities. Have fun sitting in class not really learning anything useful or interesting to you. Half the things they teach you already know or they don't teach at all. Some in person classes will end up being completely online, with the professors literally just sitting at the front of the room doing NOTHING. Trash school. An absolute JOKE! Arizona State University should be ashamed of itself. My step daughter went there for a couple of classes after completing her degree. We left it to her to handle her own financial aid, which she messed up. That is her fault, but there is no excuse for ASU to charge these kids 100.00 a month in late charges for past due balances, and also requiring 5 months late payments before allowing a payment plan.That is just a poorly veiled tax on unsuspecting young people. Shame on you ASU you already over charge for a degree that should be affordable to these young people. Not to mention all the hidden charges for parking and other things that should be. Dorms are trash. Math classes are basically self taught. The services offered through vendors affiliated with the university was a joke. We paid for gift baskets and our kid never got them. Beautiful campus. My daughter and I took a group to visit ASU Tempe for their Sun Devil Expo. We had a pleasant enough time. I enjoyed the relatively tight campus, many buildings in a one square mile campus. There were quite a few fast food dining options: Chik-Fil-A, Qdoba, sushi, Einstein Bros. I wasn't impressed with how organized their admissions team was for their conference. Even though we signed up online over 3 weeks ago, our name was not on the list. They had breakfast but unlike other colleges, they did not give a taste of their dining plan to their prospective students. They seemed super apologetic about their very large student body and kept emphasizing how they are trying to build other smaller communities. The financial aid presentation was helpful. I liked how they had a whole building dedicated to Barrett Scholars. The bathrooms in the Memorial are gorgeous! read more

Not a big fan of this sprawling massive University campus. I have to travel through Tempe quite a bit and every time I have to travel through Tempe all of the construction is just horrifying in the way that it clogs traffic. It seems like this University can't get enough growth. The reputation for Arizona State University is not a real good one in terms of academics and it looks to me like all they care about is building and building and building more and more and more. Which in my opinion is not always good if you're trying just to drive down a rural road. I'm sure that some people like this but for me it's not a pleasant experience. read more

Don't use ASU Online. Their enrollment advisor will quit mid-process, screw you out of making it into session in time. They won't apologize or forgive you their application fee. They won't apologize. My daughter is a freshman and it's been week 1! Not Impressed with the living situation. The air conditioning is not good. Can't adjust the vent in the dorm room. The shower looks like it came out of the 1970's, patch on the shower wall. The bathroom was filthy. The suite mates bathroom door sticks and they can't open it. So someone comes beating on the door after midnight, opens my daughter's room and says you locked your suite mates out. The door continues to be a disrupting problem. My daughter is an elementary Ed major housed between two floors of LOUD football players. They like to stand in the middle of the common area and yell up to the other floors after midnight! She may be a rare college student but she likes her sleep due to working and going to classes. After her seeing other dorms San Pablo housing is below average at best! Come on ASU!! read more

I signed up for a summer course and withdrew from the program after 6 days.(Personal reasons tied to Covid-19) I tried speaking to someone and they basically told me that I was screwed and owed them the full amount and not a fair pro rated amount. First and last class I will ever take at this overpriced unsympathetic university. I will never recommend or speak of ever attending this predatory business. I was so looking forward to taking the courses in the Executive Ed Business Analytics & Strategy  certificate program. I graduated in '98 from an undergrad in Business & Economics and a Global MBA in '02. I was hoping to built out my understanding in BAS and all that's evolved over the past 2 decades.  After completing the first course, I am thoroughly disappointed with the quality of the course content. 1. The recorded lectures are done by an articulate professor. The material is organized, though some of the slides available for download are mis-matched to the course (missing in print-out or included in print-out but not covered in recorded lecture).2. The required reading materials are very dated. One was from 1998 with the most recent being two from 2012. Many of them were from 2002-2003. An entire module was based on CRM with materials over a decade and a half old. Even a few of the whitepapers reference how much the field has grown/changed/morphed in the past 5 years preceding the article. And, I'd suggest even more so in the 1-2 decades since the content was created.3. Quizzes have quite a few spelling errors. More importantly 4-5 of the questions have "correct" answers that are inconsistent with the materials, likely due to incorrect semantics (e.g. double negatives, when single may have been intended). And, 1-2 of the questions had "correct" answers that are no longer true all these years later; with a different multiple choice option being more fitting in 2019. I reached out to T-bird after completing the Intro module and the 2nd module raising my concern. I asked if the rest of this course and the 2 following in this certificate program were similar in terms of dated content. It was confirmed they are the same in that regard. A WASTE of $990! I am only giving two stars versus 1 because the content seems like it would have been quality 10-15 years ago. read more

I attended ASU from 2008-2012 and I am surprised there isn't more Yelp reviews here. This school is so big with so many possible situations I don't know how reviews for a school as a whole could line up. Since 2009ish there has been more and more new buildings all over Tempe there is so many options for living in dorms as well as other on campus living. Each residence hall or apartment complex generally has its own culture. Most of the higher end/newer places always end up being the party spot I don't know why it just does. Best advice is if you are not in a sport or special program join something and find a good group of people you want to be around. Depending on your major that can impact a lot too. This University just has so much to offer that no matter who you are you can find your place. I attended the business school which has grown and built even newer buildings over the years. There is so many things I could write about but that would make this review too long. If you are an incoming freshman or parent of one reading this at least give this place a tour and talk to come current students and get their opinions. As for graduate programs I am not as familiar with those but I am considering looking into one soon as they seem to have great programs for post college studies. read more
