The fair has come and gone! I finally visited once again this year and I'm happy I did! I attended on a Friday evening with the intention of just going to the concert they had that night. The coliseum is decently sized and it got maybe halfway full. The seats were comfy and from the section we were sitting at, the view was good. After the concert ended, we decided to walk around a bit. We ended up spending $50 for 100 tickets. We were kinda bummed they didn't offer the unlimited wristbands on Friday nights.. We were able to get on about 6 rides and have like two tickets left over at the end of the night. I felt safer this time around as there were a ton of law enforcement personnel walking around. Everything is expensive but we had fun! Won't necessarily come next year, but maybe in a few years I will visit again.. read more

We went to the Fair food drive thru at the Arizona fair grounds. While we do miss the fair its actually the food I miss more. It's very organized which was a very nice surprise. They have people it seems every 30 feet guiding you through and telling you which lane in to get you to the truck or food stand you want. We got fry bread. Which was very good. The fair used to be fun but now it's too expensive to even enjoy yourself. It costs $5-$15 PER RIDE, food was overpriced for the smallest portions and there wasn't a lot of unique foods or events like in the past. Overall I was left unsatisfied and depressed from spending so much. I'll stick with the smaller festivals around the valley year round which are less expensive and more enjoyable. read more

We haven't been to the state fair since our girls were born. Been coming here over 40 years! OMGEE! It was a field trip for school here. My husband wasn't thrilled with the thought due to the times and neighborhood but I was really impressed! Safety is a strong focus. Metal detectors at the gates along with all personal bags being searched. That made my husband feel much better. DPS driving all over in golf carts on the grounds. We arrived at 10am. I really do not recommend coming before 11am as the only thing you can do is walk around and visit the animals. The petting zoo is not open. The indoor shopping area, food and rides do not open until 12 noon. We had up front parking being early birds which was a treat. The grounds parking is $12. Across the street they have a lot for $8. Food, drink, strollers and wagons welcome. I feel bad for large families. It is $50 for all you can ride wrist bands. Fast pass is an extra $25. Great for older kids and adults who love rides. Our tots love the rides but 3 hours is plenty of time. We did 40 tickets for $50. Sadly that only gave them 5 rides each. They offered deal where kids of any school age can do 3 book reports and they receive 3 tickets to ride rides. So our girls rode 8 rides all together and it was plenty. The Dumbo ride was so cute. They dug their spin on thr mini teacups too. They also flew in the air like Superman and slid down a huge slide in a sack. We saw one slide ride for 3 tickets. Most tot rides are 4. A couple like Dumbo are 5 along with adult rides. The people working the rides are kind and are very strict paying attention to the riders, making sure everyone was buckled in and the height requirements they did not slide on. Good stuff! The food is the best part. My favorite all time food growing up at the fair is Indian fry bread made savory with refried beans. Mmmmm They offer turkey legs, BBQ, tacos, Boba, fries, burgers, nachos, corn dogs, sausages, Teriyaki bowls, pizza and wings, and sweets galore. One of everything please. Inside the shopping area they have tables the kids can do an activity like a puzzle, or coloring and earn a participant ribbon. Tina did a puzzle with our little one and made her feel so special. We really adored her. Arizona State fair grounds has an app. You can purchase tickets at the covered booths electronically with your card. If you do a wristband and or fast pass the regular ticket booths offer those only. If you have a really teenie tot they may not be able to ride on any rides so visit a few tonsee minimum height requirements before purchasing a non-refundable ticket. If your little one chickens out on a ride and you used a ticket, they will credit your ticket back to you electronically or by a voucher you will take to a service booth. Wristbands are handy. Tickets gives you a business sized card you scan to ride which can get lost easily. Our girls had a blast. read more

We had such a fun time. It was a great day to go out, not too hot. We went early and got in for $5 and $10 parking, the same lot was $20 when we left out. lol We went for the food but mutually agreed to get on the lift. I don't trust carnival rides but I figured it it was close enough to the ground to not get too injured. I love the AZ state fair but honestly this my first time back in many years. This fair has so much to see and do. So be prepared to walk. The nights are the best time to go if you prefer to hit the fair shortly after opening day. Arizona weather can be a bit fertile in the afternoon. I really enjoy that they bring in so many great bands. We happend to attend the night The Cult played. My boyfriend who moved here from out of state. Said he was amazing at how many people won prizes. The food is by far why most people attend. I can see why. there is always something new and exciting to try. We decided to make the drive to the fair for their drive-thru fair food since they are closed this year due to Covid. Totally understandable why they are closed, so we were excited to still get to taste the food. When we arrived we were in a long line out on the streets to get into the parking area of the fair. While in line there were no signs pointing to fair or stating a wait time. We waited for a little over an hour outside in the streets before even making to the parking area. When we turned in it looked like a parking lot of cars that were parked until we realized it was the line. OMG. If we only knew what we were getting ourselves into before we would have just left! It took us 3 hours to get from the new line inside to finish the whole thing. Complete waste of time and money honestly. So 4 hours total! They could have done a better job at setting this up to accommodate people. For one, they say no restrooms for customers. Then, they are not serving drinks anywhere for people who are waiting this long. They decided to set up one small station at the very very end where your in almost the last line to get in, but you have to get off your car to get one while the line slowly moves. They need to tell you prior "expected wait time" because if you are in the street you have no idea what is going on. Then in the line they are tight zig zag lines that was like a maze back and forth. There was no exit as they blocked everything off with flags and cement blocks. Once you finally get to the food it is so close together so you have to wait bumper to bumper still. You can pass a section if you don't want it, but then everyone behind you ends up in front of you if you are headed to the next station. The kettle corn station was broken and not working , which we really were looking forward to. They were selling the big prize teddy bears that you would normally try to win for $89!! Insane. Love the fair! Gets pretty busy though. There's a few rides I like that doesn't make me to dizzy or make me puck. I love the crazy coaster, galaxy coaster, the swings that fly in the air, the ferris wheels all 3 off them lol & the ski lift! They updated the big Ferris wheel which is closed and has a camera inside & ac! They also have shows like with horses or bulls. Some times they have the monster truck show which I love. Also after the show you can ride on the truck for like $5! Love the monster truck show though! There's lot of rides and food at the fair. There's really good deals like wed & fri is $2 games $2 rides & $2 food. Thursday they have $30 wristbands for unlimited rides! Also Thursday from 12pm-1pm you can get in for free. Grew up going to this fair and have fond memories of games, rides, exhibits, and concerts over the years. The city and the entire metropolitan area have grown around and away from the fairgrounds, but it is always nice to return each year and see the animals, the art, photography, etc. which is representative of the state as a whole. There have always been terrific food vendors with new creations each year on top of old favorites. One thing that really stands out is the top notch entertainers brought in annually. Circus performers, animal shows, stunt performers, jugglers, fire performers, magicians, hypnotists, etc. This fair goes out of its way with promo deals and discounts making it an affordable event - even for larger families. read more

ASF is in my top 3 favorite fairs. I love that it is always different from year to year, there are new entertainers, new concerts, and different mini home shows in the colosseum. I love watching the circus, juggling, hypnotists, and magicians. Mostly magic. I don't remember an clowns, but I do like seeing different people on the stages. The rides are so much fun when I can bring my mom, she's the only one in the family brave enough to try any ride on the grounds. We go on wristband day, because even though the lines can be long, we can ride everything. Our record is 18 different rides so far. I don't buy soda, but I do buy way too much coffee, and fudge. And I love cotton candy. I love bringing my little neice here too. She loves the rides for kids. And is tall enough to go on everything now. She is thrilled. No more measuring! I love our fair. My 1st fair in 45 years! And, I believe, my 1st State Fair ever. And, the 1st one to attend alone (definitely not as much fun). From what I remember, a lot of things remained unchanged. But, a lot of things changed, too. While unexpected (I didn't read up on anything at the fair; takes the surprise factor out), I've been wanting to see the King Tut exhibit for a long time. And, I was ecstatic to see that it was there. Well worth the drive, parking and admission costs alone. I found parking for $10.00 just West of 19th Ave. But, when I left around 1, it was up to $15.00 (wow! Talk about inflation! But, there was a lot on 19th where parking was $20.00). It was a crazy set up to get tickets, and in to the grounds. There were several lines (up to 5 minutes wait time) for tickets, but only 1 line (went around the fence, and down the sidewalk along 19th with only 2 ticket checkers and 2 security people who were checking everyone) to get in. I talked to a guy who went last year, and he said it wasn't like that then. Overall, it was a nice time. But, I don't think I'll repeat it. At least not alone. read more

Worst part of the fair was parking. Taking credit card payments was a bad idea. It took an hour just to park. Nobody was directing traffic so the intersection was getting blocked. The price for ride/game tickets was ridiculous. 20 tickets for 25 bucks. t Food was also higher. It was obvious that vendors were trying to recoup money lost due to Covid. My friends and I had a blast at the AZ state fair. Get your tickets on Groupon to save yourself some money and skip the line to get the tickets. Endless food option and games. We were a group of 8 and we love to share our food, which is nice because we got to taste a lot. The lemonade with the sugar ring on the cup is amazing. It hit all the right spots. I would skip the straw and just sip it straight from the cup because you get some of that sugary sweetness. And don't miss out on the dolewhip, worth every bite! Parking can be terrible so get ready to have long waits or park a little far and walk. read more

This place is huge! Coming from Florida I say it's a decent size fair! There's tons of food vendors and rides! In the south east corner there's a petting zoo and in the other corners you have indoor shopping areas that are mostly air conditioned. I went specifically on a Friday to try the $3 foodie Friday and it was pretty good! I thought because of the $3 I thought it would be discounted full size items but was sorely disappointed on the corndog I got that was three inches long (and not very tasty). The boba was pretty good for $5 ($3 drink, $2 to add boba). I didn't get my turkey leg like I normally do when I hit up a fair bit I was so stuffed from all the treats I got to try! I really liked the Indian fry bread but wished they buttered it first before putting the powdered sugar on it. I will say this I was very disappointed in the last stall I visited for elephant ears and fried Oreos! They were already made and sitting in the front window on display. That's not fresh to me and I'd rather wait for a fresh batch to be made. My elephant ear was so disappointing it wasn't soft and or flavorful. It was limp dough on the edges and too crunchy in the middle. I wouldn't go back to the stand I got it from near indoor (non air conditioned) plaza in the northwest area of the park. The fried Oreos were ok, but again I'd rather have them fresh than sitting in the window. My other issue is that there's a significant lack of shading in the park. When it's hot the benches are on fire and too hot to sit on (even with jeans!). For being in AZ they need more shade and misting stations throughout the park area. At night I believe this isn't an issue but for the day time definitely need some improvements. read more

This was not a Midwest state fair. I'm sorry but this fair wasn't worth our time. We went on a Thursday and were immediately shocked. There were barns for animals but the only animals we saw were in a petting area. The stalls were so clean that we wondered if they were ever used. When we hit the main area, we saw a large carnival. We tried stopping at a couple pavilions for entertainment but the cooking lady never started before we left and the magician was okay but so packed we couldn't see anything. The food was typical carnival food. The only thing we had that was okay was a Dole whip. Everything else was pretty bad. It was definitely not for us. read more

Went to the fair for Yelp's food sampling event. The directions in the yelp email were a little confusing but we found the meeting spot and everything worked out. The hosts were awesome and explained what was going to happen. We then went to meet the head chef (his name is escaping me at the moment) of Midway Gourmet/RCS Fun food stands. After a quick introduction we started our voyage. Now going into this event I was expecting a bunch of greasy, fried food. This has been my experience with fair food in the past. I'm glad I was wrong because I enjoyed almost everything I tried. First stop was Enzo's Pizzeria. We had a slice of flaming hot Cheetos pizza. The crust is made of handmade dough and it is New York style. You can taste the freshness in the crust which was really surprising. Another surprise was the way the flaming Cheetos completely worked as a pizza topping. The perfect mix of heat and crunch. Next stop was Totally Baked Cookie Joint. I tried the chocolate chip cookie, which is available by the bucket...lol, and a mini cookie ice cream sandwich. Their original recipe cookies were amazingly soft and had a great flavor to them. I possibly could of ate the whole bucket! Next we were off to Mustards Midway Cafe where we were offered two types of corn dogs- a bacon or a jalapeño bacon. I chose the bacon one. I have to say that this place knows their corn dogs. The cornmeal batter was perfect and the turkey hotdog was a good pairing with the batter. Next up, the candy factory where we had a caramel apple with some good ole flaming hot Cheeto topping. I wasn't too crazy about this dish, but the Cheeto/caramel pairing was interesting. Down the midway we went to Nitro Treats, where everything was dipped in liquid nitrogen. We tried the nitro candy pop which is kettle corn dipped in liquid nitrogen. I can say I've never had anything like this. It was good and really fun to eat. Last stop on the tour was Biggy's. It lives up to its name with some of the biggest portions at the fair. We tried their sausage corn dog, which comes in at 14". It is topped with melted cheese and you guessed it, flaming hot Cheetos. This actually turned out to be my favorite food of the tasting. The sausage was some of the best I've ever had. It had that "snap" with every bite. We actually went back after the tasting and split one (even though we were kind of full already!) The Arizona State Fair is a pretty big fair. Obviously you have your foods, drinks and activities. We walked around with our children showing them the animals and even stopped to watch a magic show(which turned out to be hilarious for everyone of all ages). This place can get crowded. We went when kids admission was free and adults were $5 each. I suggest shopping around before you eat because the prices of the vendors vary. We were able to find a refillable cup. The cup was $13 and then the drinks refills were free. They also have art, quilts, crafts and other thing people have made and entered into the fair. All in all the fair has something for everyone. The Arizona State Fair is always one of the biggest highlights of the month of October with Fall just beginning and Halloween right around the corner. To me, it sets off the holidays just right. I went on Wednesday which I believe is the best day to go because there are so many discounts and perks. 1. Free admission with non perishable canned foods (4 cans) to be donated to St. Mary's food bank 2. $2 rides and games 3. Not as crowded as the weekends You can expect the obvious, which is that it's going to be expensive. But if you keep that in mind and go with a fun attitude then it's always a good time. As mentioned above, the $2 rides and games are totally worth it. One game equals to about $2 or 4 tickets. Yes, sometimes it takes more than one chance to win a prize but it's not bad for the price esp. if you win something on the first try! The foods are always great but of course expensive as well. Oh brother! This fair needs a LOT of work to do to be worth going to it. Now, I have to admit, my wife & I are spoiled, being raised in the Midwest where they really know how to put on a state fair but in our estimation, there really should be no charge to the public to attend this state fair. There are very, very little interesting free things to see. There are many, many vendors & rides you have to pay through the nose for anyway! The entrance should be free! The front gate people were rude to everyone, shouting at them "C'Mon! Go in this way, not over there!" The rides had thug music playing with inappropriate lyrics for young kids to hear. The highlight of the entire place? The agriculture building! Less than 2 hours at this place & my wife & I were out the door & won't return. I hope this fair board travels to the Midwest & other states to take notes on how a REAL state fair should operate. read more

Now the part that eats your money is the games and rides and food. So go during deal time or else expect to spend some good money. It's difficult to leave a review of the fair since there are soooo many things to do and try that others may not, but here goes... From what I understand, our state fair is tremendous and puts others across the country to shame. Ours is literally a pop-up amusement park with every type of ride, game, food, and show imaginable. We rode a ferris wheel, won a variety of prizes at classic fair games like ring toss and water gun shoots, ate deep-fried everything, and saw a sea lion show. I had a very happy 3 and 5 year old! You do pay a steep price for these things, though - do not come to the fair if you're on a tight budget! Every single game or ride costs a minimum of $3.50 for ONE play and goes waaaaay up from there. They do offer discount wristbands and admission specials (for example, we went on Sunday before 2pm so admission was $5 instead of $12). A couple of complaints from us: One, the way the food lines are set up now is terrible! You stand in a long line to order, only to be told you must stand in another to pick up your food. Two, my five-year old son got "lost" for just a moment in a large crowd. Afterward we were told that kida can get ID wristbands at the back of the fair. This is a resource that should be at the front, upon entering, and should almost be mandatory. Parents need to know about this! All in all, it's a cool fair with a ton to offer. Holy fuckamole this shit is expensive. I need a funny meme to describe the look on my face when I checked my bank account the next day. Like, what the fuck did I even buy here? My cousin and I had spent days going back and forth on what would be the cheapest day to buy 8 wristbands and fair the fuck out from open to close. Sunday looked the best because it had $5 entry before 2pm and $50 wristbands. The fair opened at 11 am and we arrived at 10:45 and paid the $5 parking lot off Encanto and 19th Ave - very easy access to the gate - there's no reason to pay more than that for parking. I highly recommend arriving early. We had the place all to ourselves at 11 am on a Sunday. No lines! That didn't last long. By 1:00 pm it started to get crowded, by 7:00 pm it was nuts to butts. read more

Had a good time there with the family today, and enjoyed only having to pay a $5 admission per person before 2pm. Unfortunately, it seems the fair has scaled back its exhibits and has given more space to people selling stuff. The rides were incredibly expensive. I mean, ABSURD. If you're a normal middle-class parent trying to take a family to the fair- save for a couple months ahead of time. Have a talk up front with the kids about what rides they want to seek out and set limits/boundaries up-front. Stay away from the games too. Two reasons - they're rigged beyond belief, and if by chance thy do win a prize - what are you going to do with a stuffed animal anyway (except eventually donating it to a thrift store after it gathers dust for years.) The food and drinks are insanely expensive too. We splurged on some ice-cream goodies, but we wisely spent $20 feeding 6 of us prior/outside the park before-haha. Seek out the refillable drink options within the park. Not a bad deal. :) Over-all we had fun, but it wasn't about seeing the exhibits and events this time. There wasn't much to choose from. It was more about how people could sell you their wares. Worse yet, the petting zoo was sparse this year. My kids/grandkids even commented on that. #Sad read more

I love Fairs!! And this state fair is a wonderful way to spend the day! Lots of interesting choices in food, the arcade games and the rides! I don't ride the rides but I enjoy the lights and watching people enjoy the fair! The cotton candy was delicious with different flavor mixes in the bag! I also had a delicious ice cream cookie that was so good!!! I didn't have much luck with the lemonade. Went to one vendor and requested a strawberry lemonade- it wasn't fresh Strawberries but a yucky syrup that made it taste like cough syrup. It was $8. Tossed it and went to another lemonade vendor that looked like it was fresh made- nope! First sip it as clear it was Countrytime mix...$8. So spending $16 for lemonade that was gross was a bummer. But, that happens. I wish the fair would have local food trucks that are good- supporting local businesses is always good!! This is a review of the petting zoo. There are cows, llamas, sheep, goats, baby kangaroos, and donkeys! It's very fun! You can feed animals, brush animals, and pet animals! You can buy alfalfa pellets in Joy mini cones for $5 each or two for $8. The llama, baby kangaroos, and sheep are soft. The goat, donkeys, and cow are smooth. There are stacks of hay you can feed them! There are three pens. One has one baby kangaroo and five baby goats. The second pen has one baby kangaroo and a donkey. The third pen has six adult goats!. Between 5-7pm, the rides and games were $2 so we didn't have to spend a lot. I think the big ferris wheel is normally $10 and the water ride is $7, which isn't quite worth all that. BUT at $2, it was great. 3. Parking was not outrageous. I heard some people paid $20+ for parking on prime days! That's ridiculous. In total, we spent 3 hours there. We walked around and looked at all the booths and saw some performances. There was even a petting zoo with cute baby goats! There were a variety of vendors. In the end, we shared a fry bread, and it was good....and yes expensive ($12?). We rode a few rides. It was just a nice way to spend a few hours outside. It is not a fair, it's a big carnival! Way overpriced and not really that much to see or do.
