Athought we did not eat there tonight service is a big part of a restaurant ... my wife got there 5 min before me at 7:30 and they told her that there would be nothing till 8:30 at the earliest. Now living in North Haledon my entire life I thought this was quite funny so I walked in and asked if they can take a party of three to witch she said sorry not until 8:30 but the problem was there were three open tables and one just finishing up. Being in the restaurant business for over 30 years I understood her hesitation but it made no sense so I told her I'm was willing to take one of the empty tables and wait a bit longer if they were to busy . Again she said no, so we left and headed to TC's, another restaurant the next town over. About five minutes after we left Arigato I called and asked if they could take three people in five to ten minutes to witch she said yes sure come on down ....... when I called her out on this she started back pedaling ...... hopefully next time We go the food can overcome the service experience.... This is my absolute favorite sushi joint in North Jersey. The sushi, the appetizers, everything is perfectly consistent. The fish is fresh, and we always get the fried tuna balls and soft shell crab to start off with. Nikki is the best server we have EVER had at any eatery. She makes us feel like family every...single...time...we visit Arigato. She deserves a raise and pronto!! It can be very busy at times so if you dont make a reservation dont be surprised if you will not be seated. In conclusion, perfect food with outstanding service. EDIT - 9/26/18 - From 5 stars to 1 star. Prices have gone up and quality has plummeted. I've never seen a restaurant fall so hard so fast. The sushi was top natch and everything came extremely fast. The AYCE was a little confusing considering there were many rules. My only issue is the price because I was under the impression that it was affordable. But when you think about it I guess it had good value because the special roles were about 13 dollars each. Extremely disappointed. Stumbled upon this place the first time with my boyfriend. The place was full but we were able to snag a seat in their small restaurant. Ordered our food and the appetizers came out quickly and were all quite delicious. The sushi didn't come out until a while later but with only one chef manning the sushi bar we were perfectly fine with it - especially since the sushi was fantastic. My boyfriend and I agreed that this place although delicious, did take a little longer than your average restaurant. Came here tonight with my boyfriend and his little sister. We ordered relatively quickly and 2 of the appetizers came out immediately. And then we just waited. We got to the restaurant at 7:30, our first 2 appetizers came out in 10 minutes and then nothing. We literally just sat there while we saw table after table get served. There were two chefs manning the sushi bar but we knew from our last experience it still might take a while so we just relaxed. But then it got to be 8:30 and the table that got seated quite a while after us got served their appetizers and sushi first, and then when we asked our waitress(manager?) if the rest of our appetizers were coming out she said that they ran out of shrimp for the tempura and then proceeded to bring 3 tables, who again came after us but she seemed to be very friendly with, their orders of the shrimp tempura. Waited until 8:50 but with no food in sight, we walked out as the waitress/manager was arguing with another customer about their poor experience and why it wasn't her fault. If our appetizers kept coming out waiting a little longer for the sushi wouldnt have been too bad, but waiting a straight hour with nothing while asking over and over again what's going on with our food is not the kind of experience I want. TL;DR Waited over an hour for no food and poor service. Won't be coming back. read more

Only giving two stars because the service here was friendly. The food pretty much gets 0 stars for me, which is so disappointing when I was recommended here by a friend who loves it! Maybe it was just an off day, but the fish on top of my sushi looked like it had white chalk on it. The rice tasted so mushy and old. The flavors were really bland and I'm so disappointed I wasted $20 and even ate mayo when I didn't know it was in a roll. Cute oranges at the end made me happy at least. read more

If I could give this zero stars I would. Supermarket sushi is better than this. Service was lacking. No ambiance. As far as I can tell all positive reviews are more impressed with cheap all you can eat rather than the quality. We would rather spend a bit more and have great food and a better experience. I live coming to this place for AYCE sushi for 20 pp. fresh and delicious sushi and awesome variety. You have to make reservation before coming because it is a very tiny spot. They offer appetizers and a cute fruit dessert at the end. My ONLY issue is that the server ( the women ) the only waitress in that place comes off extremely rude. She doesn't really show any emotion and gives off an really bad stank face. Im not sure if that's how she is naturally but I don't like It. I must present up front that this review is not for the food. But rather for the management/staff. If I were reviewing the food, it would be 4 stars. The issue with this establishment is not the food and I cannot make this clear enough. I have had 5 attempts, 2 of which were successful in patronizing Arigato. Mind you, I'm going with at least 2 other people each time and going for the all you can eat sushi so our bill for 3 is minimum $70. The previous two times to today were later in the evening (approximately 6pm) called and were told there was no space for walk ins and the earliest reservation was a 2-3 hour wait. The biggest issue can be summed up thusly....it is 453 on a Friday afternoon in the middle of August. We decided to go on the chance we'd be able to walk in and eat early. I arrived after picking up my parents to take them out for dinner. We entered the restaurant and were second in line behind a gentleman who was looking to be seated while he waited for his dining companion. The hostess, who is casually leaning against the customer side of the desk is asking him if he has a reservation. At this point, I surveyed the restaurant, and there are 2 tables of 3-4 people, in a restaurant which has space for another 24 diners. Another woman comes out of the back and proceeds to converse with the first hostess in another language. She then asks my party of three...in an empty restaurant if we had a reservation. And tells us it would be minimum a 40 minute wait, for a table in a restaurant with 25 empty seats. The management of this space is ridiculous. I have never been to a restaurant which completely restricts itself to reservation based dining, and does so without alerting patrons. This is not a super fancy restaurant, and reservations are not expected to be necessary nor does anything they publish even suggest making reservations because they're so busy (even while having room for 20+ at 5 on a Friday.). Patronize at your own risk, but try making reservations....and try making them well in advance. read more

Can't say enough about the service at this restaurant. The waitress,Nikki, is the sweetest and always tries to help with suggestions, quick responses when you need anything and she always has a smile on her face. The rolls are delicious and the variety is great for a great price,$20/person and$10/kid under 10 years old. I always bring my 4 kids there and the owner and Nikki are so welcoming to us. Great environment. Even took my mother in law there who never eats sushi and she got soup, shrimp tempura, salmon teriyaki, and shrimp dumplings. The moist and flavorful salmon was Soo good. Bottom line: great food for those who eat sushi and options for those who don't, at a great price with great service. Keep it up! read more

This place has four stars. So when we saw one ladies review of it with a picture of proof showing that she got the tiniest amount of fish in her sushi here, we thought it must be a fluke. But we were very very wrong. As the picture evidence shows we too were very disappointed with our AYCE sushi. Having gone to many AYCE sushi places in the area, this one gets only one star because it was absolutely our least favorite. In the pictures in the menu it is made to look like each roll has a normal proportion of sushi to veggies to rice but not so when you get your actual plate. At 23 dollars a person we payed $23 each for a bunch of rice. Each roll also had the same overly sweet sauce drizzled on top making it all taste identical. The shumai dumplings were mushy, no pan seared marks,looking to be microwaved. Please do not waste your money here. There are many places in the area with much much better sushi, a reasonable amount of fish, and abundant flavor for the same price around. read more

I would consider myself a loyal customer. They definitely need to buy the place next door that's empty to expand, otherwise they will lose too much business turning people away. My friend and I had a delicious dinner here! After reading some reviews, we called and were able to make a same day reservation. We had the $20, All You Can Eat dinner special. There were numerous appetizers, salads and soups to choose from, as well as nigiri sushi and specialty rolls. You order from the special menu and everything is made to order - no buffet. We had miso soup, a green salad, negimaki, and soft shell crab appetizer to start. We were pleasantly surprised to see that everything was a good sized portion, although not sure if quite as large as if ordering off the regular menu. We ordered a number of the specialty rolls and everything that we tried was delicious, with the Naruto Roll being our favorite. There was no rice and the fish was wrapped with cucumber. The crunch was very refreshing. The Spicy Tuna was actually spicy, which was a nice surprise. Our server was very helpful. She explained the process to us and made the recommendation to not over order as we would be charged for excessive left overs. Her advice was to order a second round, if needed. We did just that. We ended up ordering a few pieces and a yellowtail roll (which is described as coming with scallion on the menu, but did not actually have scallion - you have to write it in). When we asked about the missing scallion, the waitress apologized and let us know that we would not be charged for leftovers if we didn't eat it. All in all, we would go back in a heartbeat. I've eaten here twice and have been extremely satisfied both times. In order to avoid a wait, I've arrived within 30 minutes of opening. There is an extremely wide selection of regular and special rolls. Every variety of sushi that I've tried has been great. Worse experience at this sushi restaurant. Upon sitting at the table we were asked what we would like to drink and if we needed wine glasses (it's a BYOB, only perk to this restaurant). Our waitress told us they would bring us wine glasses and yet after sitting at the table for 15 mins no wine glasses bc "they had to clean them". When we did finally get glasses they only brought over three and we were a party of four. We had to ask twice before getting an additional glass and a bottle opener ..which we had to open ourselves. There was only one waitress for a busy Friday night and she had all of the tables in the restaurant so she kept running from table to table. Great AYCE sushi for $20/person!! The place is tiny, so I was glad we made a reservation for a Saturday night - there are only about 12 tables. It was full when we were there. Food - excellent. $20/person gets you unlimited rolls, sushi, as well as appetizers (soup, salad, some other snacky stuff we didn't try) and teriyaki. The pepper tuna salad for appetizer was EXCELLENT. I would have ordered two more if I wasn't saving room for the sushi. Rolls and sushi are both excellent. Pretty americanized but amazing. Service - meh. The waitress was a little short with us, and you did have to wait a fair amount of time for the sushi (not anything crazy, maybe 20 minutes).
