It's about time Hobart got a fancy froyo bar…read more No, seriously. Almost a year ago I was wandering Chapel St in Melbourne and counting fancy froyo bars. I never would have called myself a frozen yoghurt fan so I didn't bother stopping in at any of them, but marvelled at the sheer number of them. (Like, more than two.) So I said I never would have called myself a frozen yoghurt fan, I know. But then my favourite babes at Ethos decided to open their own froyo bar, in proper Ethos ethos. This means not just delicious food but beautiful food. Not just beautiful food but local food. Sourced locally or made in house, everything about Vita is in true Ethos fashion and therefore my new favourite thing in Hobart. Plus thanks to Vita I've gotten to learn about the joy of feuilletine, aka waffle offcuts basically. So crunchy and delicious. Here's how Vita works, in a nutshell: 1. head in any time between 8am and 8pm, seven days a week 2. grab a cup (even the cups and spoons are stunning?) 3. fill cup with one or more (up to six) flavours of froyo on offer (I highly recommend the dairy free coconut--yes ok I know it's not technically yoghurt but shut up and taste the magic) 4. cover froyo in delicious wonderful toppings like the sweetest, crispest grapes I've tasted in ages and/or feuilletine and/or white chocolate coated goji berries and/or house-made nutrigrain (breakfast froyo excuse thank you) 5. moment of truth weigh-in: just like on the Biggest Loser but 100% more delicious; $2.90 per 100g I've been in four times now (they opened last Monday; don't judge me) and I haven't paid more than $10 for my froyo, I don't think. I say "I don't think" because the price has always had $7.50 added to it for a delicious fresh pressed juice, too. Did I not mention the juice? Drink the juice. Though good luck with deciding which flavour juice you'll pick after having used all your decision-making skills on your froyo...

That's maybe one of the only redeeming qualities. Enticed by the thought of a warm bowl of ramen to soothe my soul, I ordered a veggie ramen for take-away at this ramen-focused establishment. Once I got back to my hotel room, I nestled in to enjoy the warming bowl of broth and veggies but I was sorely disappointed to find that the taste of the soup was a little foul and the hard boiled eggs were of a strange color and consistency. After a few bites, I just couldn't eat anymore, concerned that the suspicious tasting food might actually make me ill. This full rejection of a meal rarely happens to me, especially with a fairly easy meal of ramen. I would not return to this place to try my luck again.

I don't know what happened, but we thought we were up for a nice bowl of ramen tonight. Looking at…read morethe menu it looked a bit funny, but we figured with the good reviews it might be one of those places that are actually surprisingly good. As we got the food, it looked a lot worse than the photos suggested, but still, you might be mistaken. Then we had a few bites, and actually all of the food tasted funky (not in a good way) and dodgy, as though it was last months batch. I had the duck, and my girlfriend had the fried chicken (only edible thing we had), and we mainly just left without eating. I hate giving bad reviews, but I simply can't remember the last time I had such a shit dinner. I hope they change their way soon!

The menu consist of products gathered locally. Three choices of a preset menu: vegetarian, pescatarian, and meat centered. I chose the later. I had an exquisite meal that spanned a little over two hours. You never felt rushed and the meal was well paced. The first flight is appetizer-like. A few of the dishes had southeast Asian influences. The second flight represented it the most, and a tad spicy entering into the main course. portions are modest since there are about 10 courses, but I felt pleasantly full at the end. Extensive wine list and wine pairing option available. This is a destination restaurant you will like to return. Most of the dishe I recognize, but there were chef twist s and innovation to elevate it. For example, the use of flash grilled squid to mimic a Ramen noodle dish and using slices of ox on a skewer to mimic a kebab. For the finale they used ingredients. I normally don't like, but they reinvented it. For example, for the pallet cleanser, they used a charred marshmallow and topping it with seasoned salt, which plays with savory and sweet. The dessert was white chocolate, which I never like, except in this case. They tempered it into a custard with a buttermilk coating and a sweet and sour mixture with mandarin orange slice center. an adult version of a creamcicle. It took a team to create this wonderful menu and all the staff made the evening memorable.

Fish and Chips and a local beer were on tap for our meal, and it was all very good. We ordered and paid for our meal at the bar, and enjoyed our time at a high table by the window. We were here early afternoon, so things were relatively quiet, vs. an more boisterous and crowded evening pub atmosphere. There's 3 rooms (including the one with the bar) downstairs and an upstairs, with the local Hobart Brewing Company running this historical establishment. It looks like they have some work ahead of them in terms of upkeep of this elderly building, but the food, clientele, and atmosphere all fit together well.

Here's what we noticed: - It was a Monday night and we came in around 6:30 PM, and the place was already packed. We didn't have a reservation and the wait was going to be about 45 minutes or more, so luckily we were able to find a couple of open spots at a table in the bar area, where you order at the bar and the food is delivered to your table. It worked great! - There are a lot of great beers on tap, including several from Hobart Brewing Company. - Based on prior reviews, my wife and I ordered the Fish and Chips and the Seafood Chowder to split both dishes between us. The Fish and Chips were excellent, not overly breaded and the fish was perfectly cooked, very juicy. And, it came with a little salad. The Seafood Chowder was really good, including the bread that came with it. - The vibe inside is really fun, just a bit loud as you would expect a pub to be. Bottom line: We're glad we spent our first night at the Hope and Anchor Tavern.

NOTHING was available for a table of six! In the end we managed to get an Irish pub in the city. When we turned up, it was a case of taking a look, shuddering and going 'Great. What now?' Thankfully, one of us had the temerity to ask the staff there where there was something a bit... Nicer. They recommended the Pumphouse just up the road. We walked up and to our delight, found a really nice, clean hospitable environment with a spacious aesthetic. Sitting next to the window we ordered some drinks. I ordered a mojito (a fond favourite from my time in Northern Italy) and it was quite nice, slightly too sweet for me but from my experiences with mojitos, it was a good one. I just don't have a sweet tooth so I prefer the more limey ones as opposed to the more sugary ones. Only a minor quibble. We then started ordering our dinner. I decided on the wallaby porterhouse (medium rare) with chimi churri and pangrattato ($17) and a side smashed potatoes with herb salt. ($9) It was amazing but the very small serve of wallaby was not great value for $17. When you say 'porterhouse', you usually think of a nice thick steaky chunk of meat not a half palm slice of meat. The flavours were just right and the aoili-style condiment with the meat went down very nicely with the smashed potatoes which were (I suspect) double fried to perfection. Golden, crunchy exterior with a lovely soft buttery inside. The only reason it didn't deserve a five star review in my opinion was the meat came alone. If it was a super-posh place that serves each dish alone, well, fine, be all wanky and all that but this was just an upper-class pub. It should have at least come with some kind of salad or string beans or SOMETHING. Or been bigger. 4/5.
