If you own a house that was built in 1960 (like mine), or need a part for something that is no longer made, you should know about Architectural Antiques. They carry parts that have been salvaged from old buildings -- anything from a hinge, to parts for a door, to stained glass that has come out of churches and old houses. It's the place to look if you need a replacement, or if you want to add an antique cabinet, light, or window. I was able to find hinges that matched, when one broke, and I was able to find a door mechanism that fit our very strange front door lock (the door knob is in the center of the door, making the lock linkage extra long. Who shops there? Everyone from restaurants to businesses to average consumers. The people in the store miraculously know where everything is located and a very helpful. I only wish I could assign a ZERO (0) rating to this firm. Dealing with this company has proven to be a nightmare because they threaten customers who ask any questions about the excessive fees with which this firm "surprises" their customers after they purchase an item. I purchased some lighting from this firm and, when I asked for clarification regarding the excessive shipping cost they quoted, I received the following threat from one of their employees: "if you would like me to provide an even more detailed itemization, the costs will likely increase." So, if a customer asks why they are being charged an excessive fee, they are threatened that the fee will be increased just because they are asking a question about it. I emailed Architectural Antiques and stated "I have a problem with your shipping quote because I feel I am being taken advantage of...your terse response threatening to increase the shipping cost because I'm asking for clarification is also not helpful." There firm replied with the following: "I apologize for my terseness and for sounding threatening. I am stressed from many different areas and it's not fair to take it out on you." At this point, I thought Architectural Antiques was ready to work to resolve the problem. But I was wrong... I was able to determine the true cost of shipping the items using the corporate UPS account for my own business. The true cost for shipping the items is $97.38, $218.02 LESS than the price quoted by Architectural Antiques. When I emailed about the cost difference and carefully explained how and why their shipping quote of $315.40 was EXCESSIVE, I was then threatened by yet another employee at Architectural Antiques - even though I was still willing to pay more than the actual cost of shipping the items (namely, $157.38). This second employee stated that unless I paid without questions or shipped via their selected UPS store, my items would be considered to be abandoned and they would then claim ownership and keep my money. This is the definition of extortion. But it gets even worse... When I contacted the franchised UPS store designated by Architectural Antiques, the UPS Store at agreed to apply my pre-paid UPS labels to the boxes containing my items and mail them to me as per corporate UPS policy. I then emailed Architectural Antiques and told them that their UPS Store had agreed to ship the items. In response to my email, Architectural Antiques contacted the UPS Store and was able to get the store to violate corporate UPS policy and refuse to use my UPS pre-paid labels. Instead, the UPS Store now demanded $446.57 to ship my items. So, Architectural Antiques colluded with the UPS Store, with which the regularly do business, into violating corporate UPS policy and making the shipping quote even higher than the EXCESSIVE quote of Architectural Antiques. As of today, nearly three months after I purchased the items, they, and the pre-paid UPS shipping labels I sent to Architectural Antiques, remain at this firm. Architectural Antiques refuses to simply put the labels on the boxes - even though Architectural Antiques stated in an email to me that "if you would like to provide your own labels, that would be acceptable." They have also lied to my credit card company about their actions in this matter. This is an especially frustrating as this entire matter could be resolved in less than ten minutes if Architectural Antiques would simply put the labels on the boxes and gave them to UPS... read more

Incredible finds! I am sad to say that after purchasing several light fixtures for my 1908 home I am now selling it. I had to stop by and pick up a few items to finish the home off and ended up spending a hour just browsing. I was able to find some matching door hardware, window latches as well as a 6-panel glass door. They will always be my go-to place for unique and replacement Architectual items. I inquired about their interest in a old tub and bathroom tiles. Here is the email they sent about the tiles: Thank you for the photos. We would be interested in the tiles you've already removed, but would like to inspect them first. We would also be interested in the decorative tiles that still need to be removed, depending on how easily they can be removed. I can offer $1 per tile pending inspection. For the tub I can offer $250. When are you looking to get the tub removed? Is it located on the main floor or is it upstairs? They took the tiles and said they would count them in a day or two and get me a check. A week went by. Then when I inquired, this is the email I got: Yes, we have finished counting. There are roughly 2,700 tiles. I apologize I wasn't clear in my initial email about what tile I wanted to pay $1 for. I can give you a $1/each for the gold decorative tile with bows, which there are 150 of, but the best we can do for the bulk of the tile is $500. $650 in total. So, a classic bait and switch.... I had sent them photos and they knew what they were getting. They also saw them when the picked them up. Then they tried to renegotiate the price... Pretty slimly. It really was not about the money, but rather a principle that they would say one thing and then later try and not follow through. Be very careful when dealing with these folks. read more

Imagine you're an old house and your new owner wants to tear out your crown molding, crystal chandeliers and phenomenal woodwork to put in newer, more modern stuff. HOW SAD IS THAT? But lo and behold, your parts end up at Architectural Antiques, ready for a new home that will love them. It's like an orphanage for furnishings. I don't own a home and haven't bought anything here before. However, I could wander around this place for hours looking at the stained glass, cabinetry, old vinyl booths, everything. Architectural Antiques is a magical refuge for everything! From discarded and retired wooden furniture to vintage and rustic illuminating lights, it's one of the few places in the Twin Cities that can captivate my attention for an entire afternoon. It seems like each item in the store whispers in my ear to grab my attention whispering "Hey you! Look at me! I'm so cool and sexy. Touch me now." Maybe, it's my imagination. Maybe not. Every item's story is unique. For example, one time I learned that their "new" 1920s bar came from a retired and once prestigious restaurant in Indiana. Another time, I found out that a local famous person used to own a certain gaudy chandelier. Too cool. The thing I love the most, by far, is their immaculate collection of gorgeous stained glass windows. It's even amazing to think about how they were even transported in the first place. I also love how the natural light illuminates the glass during day. If only I were a baller (and had a home)... I also love Architectural Antique's enthusiastic and knowledgable staff, especially Emily and Andy. They seem to know just about every item's story. Not only that, but they also have amazing taste in music! (Totally subjective, I know.) We have been longtime purchasers from Arch Antiques and obtained some great pieces from them. The past last purchase had not gone well for us as the items we purchased via photo verification, emails, and phone calls with Ian over the quality and condition of a pantry cabinet system. Ian claimed the piece had one small piece of wood chip from near the broom closet that was broken off. Chip was saved and the rest of the pantry cabinet was in excellent condition. Arch disassembled the piece prior to us showing up with a rented moving truck. Upon arrival we noticed numerous damaged areas and asked to speak with Ian as the quality is not what was pictured and described by Ian. Ian arrived 30 minutes later and was insulting to my wife and as if we have never purchased architectural salvage before. Ian claimed this was the best cabinet they have had in years and that the cabinet was as pictured when sold. When asked to look at the cabinet pictures on the website and compare to what we were seeing on-site, Ian declines. Ian then spoke with the owner and offered us another 25% off the cabinet. We then asked to speak to the Owner and did. The owner would not give us his name and was completely rude the entire time. He refused to look at the pictures and the unit. Arrogant and rude ownership will eventually ruin this company as the competitors provide better service. We left with no cabinet and a full refund after a good fight. Our moving truck would have been a waste of money, but we went to Stillwater and filled it up. We planned to buy $2,000 in lighting from Arch that day, but the way this transaction was handled and the owner's attitude kept us from funding them any further. This place is bananas. Tons of old light fixtures, stained glass windows, doorknobs and hardware. If you're in the market for an enormous $30,000 complete set of stairs from the 1800s, this is your place. Much of their stock was WAY out of our price range, but it's certainly a lot of fun to walk through. Be warned, if you've got kiddos or clumsy friends, you may need to hold onto them pretty tight, there is an abundance of breakables around every corner. read more

Nice place and fun to browse, but it's expensive compared to other salvage spots in the TC area. I only buy on a good sale after checking other places. I think they might be doing a pretty good trade on line for things like lighting and to people willing to fork out the big bucks because their prices on smaller items just don't figure with the local market. Worth a visit, but check out the other local salvage places for better deals. read more

Jim Gearen in the last week Beware!!! Rip-off artist. Bad faith dealer. I bought a pair of prairie school windows from Architectural Antiques in 1999, and paid $1,200 for each of them. In 2017, I brought them back to sell. The owner told me that Prairie School had not held its value and all he could offer me (after some haggling) was $300 per window. He said he would only be able to get maybe $500-600 for them today. A few days later, I see them offered on 1st Dibs as: " Stunning original George Elmslie cabinet doors" $1,560 each... I called and talked to the sales woman who was there when the owner low balled me and trash-talked the windows I had. She apologized and said she could not say anything at the time, but that what happened to me was clearly wrong and the owner knew exactly what they were when he bought them back. Lesson learned: DON'T TRUST THESE PEOPLE. Do your business elsewhere. read more

We visited three out of four house salvage stores. This one had what we sought and they do ship. We were looking for a claw tub and chandelier for our vintage 1894 home. We settled on a ceramic pedestal tub that is 65 inched in length. They have a wide array of chandeliers. The first one you see is a massive ball room chandelier. After some looking, we found a chandelier to our liking as well. Quite a remarkable place. read more

This place has a very impressive collection, but it is too expensive. Everything can afford to be marked half price. Tiny Art Deco light fixtures, for example, over $400 seems ridiculous. If they reduced their prices, maybe they'd actually get some of their items sold and the place would be less cluttered. read more

This is the salvage store you go to if you want to find a high end selection of doors, windows, woodwork, lighting (especially lighting), paneling, fine mantles. They have some distinctive and historical pieces and are constantly bringing in new inventory. If you aren't wealthy then you will need to rob a bank or sell an organ before stepping into this store. Very overpriced, but some of the items are so nice and one of a kind that they can command high prices. It's the only reason I gave them 4 instead of 5 stars. For your hardware collectors out there, don't waste your time. They have a lot of door plates that the average homeowner would be interested, but nothing special or unique from a hardware perspective. They have a lot of hardware for common restorations, but a homeowner would be much better off buying it on Ebay and paying literally 10% of what this store charges. It is why they have so much hardware- basic and overpriced. Owner seems to be a nice enough person and tends to keep to himself and his employees. Some of the sales staff is very nice and professional. This place is utilized by many high end historical renovation designers. read more

I searched on-line for gothic revival church lanterns and I found some at Architectural Antiques. Wow, great. However, they were not as described and they arrived broken. The glass panels were not cut to the correct size and the lamps were not as tall as described. The finish was different on each one. Worst of all, they do not allow for returns, refunds, or store credit. Shop carefully, you may regret purchasing on-line with this company. I certainly do. read more

I have been searching for crystals to replace on a chandelier project. Since I am at work during their business hours and I am on a deadline for the project that I need the crystals for, I had called and asked if they could help me find them. I asked if it was possible to email the dimensions and pictures of what I was looking for. This would save me a trip just in case they didn't have anything similar. I know I was asking for a lot and it is hard to match something that you can't see for yourself. Emily was so friendly and very helpful.
