What should have been a straightforward 300-square-foot hardwood flooring installation turned into a nightmare of poor workmanship, unprofessional behavior, and inadequate repairs. We paid $6,800 expecting a high-quality job, but what we got was an exhausting ordeal. From start to finish, the experience was riddled with issues that we had to identify and report ourselves--problems that any competent professional should have caught immediately. The quality of the work was shockingly bad. On day one, Liquid Nails glue was tracked across the floor, leaving visible shoe prints and hardened globs that were never properly cleaned. Many boards were cracked or splintered, and there uneven seams in the flooring because the lines weren't properly started, according to the contractors who later fixed the job. The subfloor wasn't leveled, causing high and low spots that ultimately required sanding. To make matters worse, the second contractor we hired to fix the mess pointed out that parts of the floor weren't nailed down properly particularly around the walls, and the nailing overall was insufficient. They also found numerous "H-joints," a hallmark of rushed and sloppy workmanship. The baseboards, which we paid $700 to have installed, were no better. They were nailed to drywall instead of studs and could be pulled off with minimal effort. Excessive caulk was used to cover gaps and poorly cut boards, and additional wood putty stains were left behind during their attempts at repairs. The lack of professionalism was equally disappointing. One of the installers loudly berated a younger worker to the point that both we and our neighbors could hear it. It was clear that no quality inspections were being done. We had to point out every issue ourselves, and the repair attempts they made often made things worse instead of better. Despite repeated complaints, the company failed to resolve the issues. The first repair attempt involved replacing one marked board and adjusting a seam, but they didn't clean the Liquid Nails residue, leaving even more wood putty stains in the process. A second installer tried twice to remove the glue but failed both times. In the end, we were offered either a board replacement or a "deep discount." The so-called "deep discount" only covered the cost of repairs and felt like a minimal gesture given the extent of the issues. Our best decision was taking the repairs out of their hands. The professionals who took over spent time explaining all the issues and were shocked at the poor workmanship. I regret not hiring them in the first place because, in the end, we'll never get the finish we initially wanted, and there are issues with the floor we're just going to have to live with. Save yourself the frustration and hire someone else. Arcata ProFloor's lack of quality control, unprofessional behavior, and resistance to taking accountability--offering only the bare minimum to address their mistakes--make them impossible to recommend. I am completely disappointed in this company now. I had prior experience with them purchasing an area rug and I was pleased with the service I received ~ but at around the same time my son ordered and I paid for carpet to be installed in my old house so he and his family could move in. He gave his notice at his rental and I moved out and everything was ready to go for the new installation and he was told 1 day before that they didn't have the carpet and that it hadn't even been manufactured yet!! Was there a reason they couldn't let us know before that??!! They offered a replacement that was no where near the quality that we ordered so he asked for a refund which they weren't happy to give. Have no idea what my son will do now~ with a new baby to think about too!! I DO NOT recommend this business, this was a terrible mistake they made !!! read more

I am very happy with the laminate flooring and the help we received picking it out but it was a terribly confusing process. We never received a detailed estimate (including product and labor). We should have stopped there but really liked the product. We paid half up front (they told us to pay half) but they had to come back and replace 2 transition pieces that were less than professional. The bill came and, surprisingly, it was about $200 more than the second half we were supposed to pay! I will not use them again or recommend them. We were greeted and after a few questions, were led to our eventual choice for a hardwood floor for our family room - Armstrong American Scraped floor in autumn blaze. The visit for measuring the floor was prompt, however the floor was out of stock through Armstrong and we did have to wait 2 months to get it down on the floor. The quality of workmanship on the lay was excellent. Concerns over a defective board were quickly addressed and relayed. The man laying the floor even brought treats for our dog:) We love the floor! These guys are great. Our floors were a mess and had bothered us since we moved in. APF was extremely helpful in finding a product that would work with our budget. They saw the challenge when they came to perform the estimate and still took the job (of which we were grateful). The guys who did the installation were there for 2 solid days removing the old floor and installing the new one. We had some unique transitions and trim issues that they came back and finished the following day but overall it was done before we knew it. The new floor looks great and is seamless with the existing door trim and cabinets. Their customer service was great and their staff is really what you hope for when you go to a local business. Arcata ProFloor replaced our carpet earlier this year. The estimate was reasonable and the staff were very kind and accommodating, but the quality of work once our new tile was put in was poor. There are several sections of tile that meet with the walls were it appears to have been measured incorrectly and left small sections of tile (the largest being about 1/2 inch) that gradually got thinner and thinner (picture small pieces of angled tile) until it lined up with the correctly measured sections. There are also several sections of grout that look discolored and have small dents. The floors also were supposed to be completed on a Friday, but the AFP floorer and his ill-experienced apprentice were unable to finish on time and we had to live with our kitchen and living room under construction until Tuesday. Although these are minor problems that could have been over looked, the worst of it came to light recently (about 4 months later) when we discovered water seeping up through the new grout in the kitchen from a leaking dishwasher pipe that APF had reinstalled incorrectly. The dishwasher was a quick fix as one of the pipes just needed to be tightened, but the grout in the kitchen now looks awful and there is unknown water damage under the tile. For what we spent on the floors, we expected a much higher quality of work. AFP came highly recommended to us, but we very disappointed with the result and will not be recommending them. read more
