Stopped in for a quick snack after 1 pm on a Friday, since we were still pretty full from breakfast but wanted some mussels. Hubby had some sort of raspberry beer and I ordered a cafe with cream, which I didn't know meant whipped cream, so the waiter definitely thought something was wrong with me when I took a whole glob of it out of my coffee. We shared the white wine and garlic cream mussels. The sauce was nice but some of the mussels were sandy. And at €26, it's a bit on the pricey side but you're paying more for the location. It's located right outside the Saint Hubert Gallery, so it's a good place to people watch. I would recommend skipping the food and just ordering a beer if you're just looking for a quick break. read more

We had our final meal in Brussels at this cozy little cafe right around the corner from our hotel. We were the only customers in the place on a Tuesday evening, and I had to track down a server. We ordered an Aperol spritz and a beer to start, and selected the Moule with wine and garlic, and the Vol-au-vent. This little place was recommended to us by our hostel hostess, a local who grew up in Brussels. I have to admit, I have legitimately been daydreaming about the Chicken Vol-au-Vent I had here since I left. I immediately went on my Pinterest and pinned a million and one recipes on how to make it. I have developed a small obsession and addiction to this place's Vol-au-Vent, and I am no longer afraid to admit it. But seriously, the food here was so fantastic, and the servers were very kind. We spoke in only French with them, but we know that at least the man who seemed to be the manager of the place spoke English. Walked around the upper area of central Brussels and came across this delightful cafe. The waitress was hilarious (without intending) - starting talking quickly in French and somewhere stated Moules. The confused look on my face stopped her in mid sentence - and she said in perfect English - "we have no mussels - I'm sorry." We laughed heartily. We ordered tiny croquettes of mixed Dutch cheese and shrimps. Very yummy. Part of me REALLY wanted Flemish Stew - but I really just wanted a Pasta Bolognese - which is all over the place in Cafe's - the stew might have been too heavy at my dining hour. My dining partner ordered Belgian meatballs with tomate sauce. My pasta was delicious (it was really an angel hair) - the sauce was made with carrots and onions along with the ground beef, and the flavor of the sauce had a bit of Hungarian taste to it. My friends Belgian meatballs tasted very good and he enjoyed them as well. I'd have loved to try something from the extensive dessert list, but it was late in the day for them and many selections were gone. This was a great find!! Highly recommended. All in all, read more

If I was an asshole idiot I'd be like ** One of our water glasses was DIRTY! ** They sat us upstairs and it was HOT! ** Our waitress didn't speak ANGLISH! ** We had to ask TWICE for our frites before they finally showed up! We got two tarts - Salmon, and Mushroom - and they were awesome. The mushroom tart tasted like a piece of lasagna. Frites were the steak cut variety, which I don't like as much, but these were the best version I've ever had (and they were piping hot since they forgot to send them out). The lemon meringue tart was just as good as it was 4 years ago. I got Chimay white, which is pretty much impossible to pass up on draft. First floor was a very lively cafe scene. We only stopped at Arcadi for a quick drink on the way back to the hotel during our trip to Brussels; it's perfectly located after wondering around the tourist area but remains well priced. It started to fill up quickly after we arrived, and people seemed to be there for one thing only - the bakery! After a few days already of drinking and eating, we couldn't quite face a slice, but I can see where all the five stars are coming from; the raspberry meringue pie especially was almost mesmerising, as they sliced and served alongside coffee and beer. The food was delicious and so was the dessert! They have a little bit of everything on the menu and the staff was great. We sat inside where there is ac and the manager was super helpful with the menu and making decisions. We had the fresh pasta and then went back the next day for the dessert. We decided to eat there again and got spinach and broccoli quiche, couscous of the day (so good) and a piece of raspberry pie, yumm! They also have an extensive beer list that we took advantage from. The only reason I gave this place one star is because 0 stars isn't an option. We went to this restaurant and sat down upstairs, where our server was loudly mumbling and cursing in French about how many people he had to attend to. Reluctantly, my friends and I ordered food. Less than 5 minutes later we knew we had made a mistake because our server's attitude was so terrible and the ambiance was bad. We didn't want our only night in Bruxelles to be plagued with a bad meal and a bad night, so we went downstairs and politely asked our server to cancel our orders. He and 3 other servers made a HUGE scene in front of a packed restaurant, and made us pay for a meal we never received and had only ordered less than 5 minutes before. I have never been treated like this by anyone in my life, and they ended up cursing at my friends and I. This place is absolutely terrible, just skip it. read more

Perhaps the worst experience on an amazing vacation. I am a vegetarian. I ordered their egg plant Parmesan. I specifically asked if that included any meat items. They said no. I ate half of it and then realized it was laced with sausage pork and beef. I asked them what it was they said mushrooms. After I realized it wasn't mushrooms, I asked them again. My favorite place to eat while in Brussels. Great selection of beers including a "Beer of the Month" and nice menu with local and international meals as well as signature "tartes aux légumes" - quiche-like vegetable pies. The best thing in Arcadi Café is the dessert selection displayed by the counter. You can spend long minutes choosing the right one to finish your meal with. But the little voice in your head will make you return again and again to try all of them. But whichever you choose, you will not make a mistake. As said before, the downside of the place is the service, though the waiters have never been mean to me, they are just really busy. I would recommend Arcadi Café for a small meal during the day or the occasional dessert whilst browsing the city. read more

This was by far the best carbonara I had in a while, perfect al dente pasta, great creamy sauce. Good location and altough the place was packed the service was quick and without issues. NEVER GO HERE. This is the worst restaurant I have ever been to in terms of food and service. Only gave them one star because it would not let me put 0 stars...We were sworn at, yelled at, and treated worse than we had ever been treated in our lives in a restaurant. It was shocking, I do not know how this place stays in business. After being treated like this, we tried to leave and the servers, or more like thugs, tried to make us pay extra for things we did not order. I was about to call the police. Unbelievable. Do yourself a favor and go to the restaurant we were going to go to...which ended up being much nicer, and the owner was amazing, he even gave us free drinks while we waited for a seat. I like this place and have been here several times but was there a couple days ago on a Friday afternoon. It wasn't busy and although the weather was nice, we sat inside (all outdoor tables taken). I just ordered a sandwich and my lady some kind of eggplant thingy. A sandwich is a sandwich, so no rave reviews there. She enjoyed hers though which was something like mille-f...... Not sure of the name. The beers (Waterloo) came quickly enough but a half hour after ordering we were still waiting for our food. I have been served a lot faster when the places was packed. The waiters seemed clueless as to who ordered what at which table. First they tried to give us some prawn dishes which we didn't order. After complaining about the service, it was obvious that the waiter completely forgot about it since people who arrived later than we did were already eating. When I paid and the lady asked how everything was, after I told her the service was crap, she said that they had just gotten a new system where the food is ordered and its put on some type of credit card looking piece of plastic and put on the table of the customers. They were getting used to the new system. NOT MY PROBLEM! I do like it here but hate to see such customer service, or lack of it. read more

Whether you feel like having a light snack or a hearty dinner in Brussels, Arcadi Cafe can satisfy your cravings. My wife and I went there based on the recommendation of Rick Steves and we were delighted! I'm not normally a person who eats quiche -- not because of any lame stereotype, but because they are usually too heavy on the eggs and butter for my liking. Not so at Arcadi. We ate there twice, sampling several different savory tarts, all of which were made with a very light touch. I don't quite know how they did it, but the tarts are full of flavor and full of their advertised ingredients, but seem to have very little in the way of eggs. Also, I'm fairly sensitive to the taste of butter, and I couldn't detect any in the tarts that I ate -- I suspect they use olive oil instead. Highly recommended based on our experience are the smoked salmon and broccoli tart, and the mushroom, olive, sun-dried tomato, and basil tart. But the real showstopper is their famous framboise meringue (raspberry tart). This one obviously did have a lot of egg in it, the whipped whites making up the meringue, and the yolks making up a delicious smooth custard that formed the base. Surprisingly, both the meringue and the custard were both light on the sugar, making this a stark contrast to the usual sickly sweetness one has come to expect from this kind of desert. In this case, it was the fresh raspberries that provided the sweetness! The first time we visited, we asked for the framboise meringue because it was specifically highlighted by many reviewers as being the pinnacle of their offerings. Alex, our waiter, informed us that they only ever make one per day and when it's gone, it's gone! He took pity on us, however, and suggested that if we were to come back the following day, he would ensure that two slices were set aside for us. We did return the following day and we did enjoy our reserved slices immensely! read more

Though one could complain that it's too busy, too slow, too (insert pet peeve),etc., I never fail to visit this restaurant when visiting Brussels. Portions are generous, food is good, and their specialties are impeccable. During my last visit, and what makes most of the charm of the location is that the servers really don't have much of an attitude and the fact that it's always busy, crowded and a tad noisy makes one of the reasons I think people come here. Atmosphere does count. During my last visit there were Germans, French, and Belgians around me, young and old. Highly recommend going for lunch and asking and ordering "le menu du jour". read more

We found this place on Yelp and followed the directions, which worked perfectly. The location was on a busy square and there was a buzzing atmosphere. My experience in Arcadi can be summarized as follows: - Rude and confrontational service - Absolutely hopeless waiter (wrong orders, takes forever) - Had to wait 30+ minutes to get a bill when the place is half-empty. After half an hour of asking the waiter several times for the bill (he was inside chatting to his mates) I walked inside and asked to pay by card. When I hand him back the receipt, the waiter actually confronted as to why I wasn't leaving a tip (first time I've been asked for a tip in Brussels) I assume he was trying to take advantage, assuming I didn't know that service is included by law in Belgium! He then confronted further, saying I should be leaving a tip because we had "service a table". I still refused and explained how bad the service was. He muttered something in French or Arabic that I couldn't decipher as I walked away. Overall, not a very good impression and needless to say I'll never go back. This restaurant came up in a google search for 'Gluten Free Restaurant Brussels. To my disappointment when I arrived, I discovered this is a very inaccurate Google result. I read reviews online praising this restaurant as having 'lots of gf and vegan options'. This statement is only true if you like and want to pay a ridiculous price for a salad. The waitress seemed unattentive, and kept wanting to leave me rather than advise. In the end when I insisted the waitress give me better suggestions than salad, I was able to choose one gluten free dish out of two options, which were not salad or omelette. Due praise it was veal meatballs (I really compromised my beliefs in the name of hunger). They were very tender and pleasant, but the fries/chips which were served with them were dark and over fried. The meal with a bottle of water was less than 20 euro and very filling. So despite the disappointment at least I ate a meal I enjoyed and my hunger was satisfied. But I would not have chosen food venue this if I knew better. read more

The cooking here is loaded with spices and very flavorful. What did we have? Crepes Salmon full of veggies with savory crepe and a side salad. Excellent flavor and easily split in 2. The 1/2 poulet or chicken is nice but nothing special. Good for a kid as it has fries and is bland at least for here. It also comes with a side salad. The risotto scampi has shrimp, spinach and a nice texture and a ginger undertone that lingers. Our other salad, which we didn't have a clue what we were ordering was tomatoes with a bitter lettuce (not bad bitter, flavorful) and tuna chunks and then a spicy vinaigrette dressing to help counter the lettuce. It was very good. Our final dish had the word grille in it and it turned out to be a steak grilled on the outside and rare inside, red and cold rare. That is how it comes. The grilling is loaded with natural flavor definitely nothing else added. It also had fries, herbed butter and side salad. Kids stopped eating so they can try the sweet tarts raspberry and lemon meringue. Given that we are on vacation I guess that is ok :). Fries are probably the only thing I didn't really like. Our waiter spoke little English so we relied on our son's 1 year of French. Menu is not in English. House white wine is dry. read more

We had a waffle with whipped cream and a warm tarte au chocolat both were delicious, especially the cake. We also tried the hot chocolate a la maison, which was very good, too. The only downside was that the waiters only spoke French, which made placing our order quite the adventure. We did succeed, however, and were quite happy with what we got.
