Airbnb host recommended this place for good pastries so we decided to try out a raspberry tart. I feel like anything in Belgium with fruits tend to be more expensive as it cost us 5.80 euros. It was quite large in size for a tart with plenty of raspberries on top, so that made the price more acceptable. It was pretty tasty and the raspberries seemed to be covered in some sugar. We needed some breakfast and had to use TripAdvisor to find something close. We brought home with us a *** Pain Multicereales €6,95, and two **** Pain au chocolat €3,50 for two. Atmosphere was rustic and charming and the staff were very kind and helpful and spoke enough English to make it easy on us. Part of the appeal of going here was nostalgia: I haven't been to *this* location before, but I have great memories of long leisurely brunches with bread and hard-boiled eggs and a smorgasbord of spreads from other Le Pain Quotidien locations Part of the appeal was history: I read somewhere on the interwebs that this is the original Pain Quotidien location? The real draw: I was not just hungry, but HANGRY (the irrational anger I get when I'm over-hungry). And I was local. So I went. Jeez, they've got their stuff together at Le Pain Quotidien. One thing I especially appreciate is that I never feel weird eating alone here. There are newspapers by the entryway to grab, but people-watching (subtle eavesdropping) is also a great pastime. I was just after the morning rush, and the sun was streaming through the windows and I sat down at a long wooden table and ordered a coffee. Tres bien, indeed. I had the open faced tartines, which are a favourite. This time I went for smoked chicken and zucchini and pesto. I love how they are presented on a white board, small triangles delicately placed to show off all the fresh ingredients. Simple but not too simple food, you know? Does a body good. Service was super-attentive (a theme across Belgium, in fact) and I never felt rushed, though I also didn't have to wait at all for plate clearing and/or bill. I sure do wish that I could make Le Pain Quotidien my...erm...(translation about to happy)...daily bread stop. We came here for lunch after a late night and were happy to be greeted with friendly service and a bright, cozy atmosphere. One had the chicken and pesto with sundried tomatoes (a little strong on the pesto and the tomatoes were a little too sweet, but good otherwise), one had the salad plate (great portion and good), and one ordered the chicken with zucchini but rec'd the eggplant with zucchini - which was good anyways. This place is quite possibly the most adorable franchise cafe I've ever been to. I had slightly elevated expectations for the "original LPQ." Not that I've ever been a huge fan of the "Daily Bread," I just remember walking past it half a dozen times while living in Kyoto and near Philadelphia and thinking "oh look, a bread franchise, that's something to get excited about..." Sarcasm aside, LPQ was also one of the few places that were serving hearty-ish breakfasts at or around 7:30 in the morning during my week-long Belgium-a-palooza. Whereas I thought this location would have something special going on being the original and whatnot, they surprisingly didn't; instead they had the usual bread choices / healthy all-organic mini salads and soups available on the menu, and I think some sort of organic sparkling wine or cider that they brewed in conjunction with a different company that they're allied to. I ordered a warm savory brioche with a cup of coffee, and the presentation was so quintessentially "European" that I was almost tempted to shriek like a little girl -- especially fresh in my memory was my cup of coffee that came in a BOWL with a spoon that had a small chocolate bar attached to the end. Oh and the brioche was warm, flaky, moist, chewy, etc. (i.e. everything you expect from a hot-off-the-bakery-bun) The service was delightful despite me getting there the minute they were open, and the prices were not surprisingly cheaper than what I'd previously paid in other LPQ franchise locations; I wouldn't say this place is a must visit in terms of the food they serve, but the atmosphere more than warrants it if you have some time to spare (or if you're just finding yourself walking around jetlagged out by Place Bourse at 6:00 in the morning) read more

Wonderful lunch for a rainy day in Brussels. We stopped in for a smoked salmon salad and a pumpkin soup. Warmed us up for a day in the rain. Inside seating is gorgeous, in a greenhouse-like picnic space. Only thing is I bought a coffee to go at the counter near the door and it was unnecessarily complicated - it seemed like nobody was prepared for such an order, and it was only halfway filled. Went there for brunch. Place is freaking expensive and portions are small. For example the charged us 7euros for 6 slices of bread. We paid 33euros in total (2 people) for mainly bread and coffees while with the same price you can have 3 courses or good quality warm food in other places in Brussels. Le Pain Quotidien is a popular franchise in the States, and although I don't normally like franchises this one is a favorite of ours. So it was a pleasure to visit the original location, which delivered on its reputation of affordable high-quality food. The eggs and bread are extremely fresh, as are the fresh-squeezed juices. The smoked salmon is delicious as well. Pastries depend on your preference. The coffee is not bad, but if you ask for espresso or cappuccino that is not what you will get. Service is friendly and speedy, although you may need to be assertive to get condiments if you are at a small table. You can sit down to eat or purchase bread or pastries to take away. As a loyal customer to Pain Quotidien for more than 10 years, I was dismayed today to hear that this location is now under new management. While I wish them well, it may be without my business. My customary order has always been double espresso and brioche. Through the years they have always warmed the brioche for me and today I made my usual request. This is when I discovered that this location is now under new management and my server scolded me loudly that this is no longer their policy. Policy changes, while disappointing I can accept. The demeanor of the server was unacceptable. I hope that this was an exception and not reflective of new ownership. read more
