My husband and I drove here and it was a little confusing at first because there is no set parking lot that we found, we kind of just drive to one of the entrances and parked nearby. There's also neighborhood street parking. This park is also dog friendly! There's a main trail that's paved and some side trails that are unpacked and can get a little muddy depending on the weather. We saw some possible turkey tail mushrooms growing on the logs and some horsetail plants. For us the park, wasn't too big, it's very beautiful and lush but the trail itself is on the shorter side unless we missed something.

"Excuse me, how do we get to the ocean?"…read more I was standing at a corner near Westlake Park waiting for the light to turn when a lady and her daughter came up to me and asked me this question. I pointed them towards Elliott Bay. We were definitely nowhere near the Pacific Ocean but I was pretty sure they wanted to get to the waterfront. I chuckled a little after they went on their merry way. It was an organic, human connection that happened during my lunch break. This wasn't the first time someone came up to me and asked me for directions. I kinda expect it when I'm around the retail/hotel district. I'm ok helping folks out; it's a test of my own navigational skills. When my cousins and I were kids we used to run through the park's water fountain. They shut the water off years ago though. They say it's broken but I think people bathed in it or used it as a toilet. Blech. Supposedly they're going to remove this art piece and make way for a redesign. Westlake Mall used to have an outdoor patio overlooking the park. You used to have an aerial view of the Salish basket weave pattern. Then the mall got rid of the top floor food court and decided to close off the patio section. Unless you work in a nearby building it's hard to view the public art's entirety. Kitty corner from the park on 4th & Pine is a building where The Bon Marché used to be. Every winter they would install a giant star on the SE corner of that building. It's lit up to brighten the dark days. Walking past this building always reminded me of the Day-O, One Day Sale jingle. They hold special events and activities year round. They also host food trucks during the workweek. It's easy to get here. Just take the bus to Westlake Center or the light rail to Westlake Station. Side note: If you have time, check out the 80-foot Sequoia Tree a block away. Man In Tree made it popular :) Also, if you're looking for free brochures and visitor guides they have stands at the Convention Center Arch Building, Pike Place Market, the Seattle Ferry Terminal, and King Street Station.

This review is just for the dog park area which is down toward Elliott Ave, this tier is dubbed…read more"Lower Kinnear Park." The dog park area here is new, and pretty nice. It's large enough for dogs to run around, but not super large like Magnuson or Westcrest. The ground is made up of small wood chips, which my dog seems to like a lot better than the stones at Regrade Off-Leash Park. The crowd also seems to be a little more dog-friendly than Regrade, which is closer to my home but sometimes attracts people who just want to hang out and not follow dog park etiquette. There is no water in the park. There is sometimes a bowl full of water, but there's no running water to refill it or anything. I know the park is new, I'm not sure if they plan to add water later. I've also seen a raccoon down in the parking lot, which is located behind Queen Anne Upholstery. Apparently there's a "cat lady" who puts out cat food that attracts the raccoons, but I'm a little wary of raccoons that are out looking for food during the day. That's just something to watch out for. My dog has her rabies shot, but why mess around? Finally, it's really difficult to get into the parking lot from Elliott. When you turn onto West Mercer, you can't turn into the parking lot because there's a divider in the street. I end up going up the hill and making a u-turn to come back down the hill and make a right into the parking lot. This isn't the best scenario, but I don't really have a better plan yet. Still, worth it. My dog loves this park, it's a good size for her, it's close to home and she loves running around with the other dogs!

I wish the city of Seattle would invest a little bit in this park. It's in a part of the city that…read moredesperately need some green space, for adults, children, and pets. But especially for children. There aren't a lot of great park/playground options for kids in this area, and unfortunately Kinnear park is also not a great environment for kids. There's only one swingset and nothing else... no playground, no pavement to ride bikes/scooters/etc on, no water park, nothing. A playground would do wonders for this park. Then additionally there are homeless people essentially camping out in the park, and it's probably not the safest place to be at night either. Also there's no great way to go from Olympic down to Elliott, as you are forced to walk a long and circuitous path. A more direct switchback path or staircase going down would be a great investment, especially for the shops on Elliott, which today are fairly isolated from residential Queen Anne traffic. One thing that I do like about this park is it size and walking paths that are available if you want to go for a short hike.

Rather, it's a corridor with pavement that has one lane of traffic running through it. The concept is ok - it's supposed to encourage pedestrians, cyclists, and automobiles to share the space, but in reality cars will dominate unless they close the street completely down and enforce it. The signs say that it's local access only, but people still go speeding down the street. Enforcement is not happening in the heart of Belltown. I would stick to the sidewalk and not the middle of the "mixed use" area unless you want to be run down.
