I found this place through Instagram and added it to our must visits for our Oregon trip as my boyfriend is a huge fan of the 80s vibes from music to video games and a huge fan of root beer. I learned that they made their own root beer and love their cocktail names. We wanted to try some more of their menu but had a sudden food spot as I got really hungry on the way there but that just gives us a reason to come back! Our bartender Shana was very patient and sweet to us as we were looking over the menu and she told us that we can ask her any questions if we come across any. We ordered a Root 84 classic for the time being as we weren't sure if we were going to order anything else as we were stuffed. But they had a sweet deal going on Sunday which was $5 pizza slices or $6 for their pizza of the week. Additionally, they had karaoke about to start when we had arrived. We couldn't stay for that as well as we drove from Washington and were very tired, but my boyfriend said he would be so down to go back on a karaoke night to sing some of his favorite 80s songs. I loved seeing all their different 80s arcade games as I have never seen any of those games as I was born in 1993 so it was really cool to see some early arcade machine designs as well as the pinball machines too. The vibes inside are dark with neon lights which I really love and they had a retro menu sign inside the bar. Mars was the owner who came to introduce us to the place and directed us to the bar as well. When he saw me taking several pictures, he came to tell us how Arcade 2084 came to be and the hard work he and his staff put into making this place come alive. He was very sweet and you could tell how passionate he was to preserve this place and the beauty of the 80s. Hillsboro has a retro arcade! Fun little spot with a great variety of retro games. I'm happy to learn they stuck to the retro style by actually using a token system instead of card or payrange. There's also a few sit down table games like Frogger. Theres a full Sunday happy hour and drinks are really creatively named. Great addition to Hillsboro's downtown! Arcade 2084 has been here for a couple years now - they're never busy when I go in so I'm a little worried for them, but I do hope they do well. They started out with a cover charge but thankfully got rid of that and have made dropping in and out for a couple quick games much easier! I love that we don't have to go to Portland for an arcade anymore. One time we came in, we got the full tour from the owner who was super passionate about the games - nothing here that wouldn't have been available in 1984! I like the ambiance and the 80s music playing (though the music videos on in the corner don't actually match up). Games are either one or two tokens (quarters) and $5 will go a long way unless you just love pinball but are bad at it like me. Drinks from the cute bar in the back are pretty good and have fun names - but do fall on the sickly sweet/candy side. They have a nitro rootbeer (boozy and non-alcoholic options) as well as a few beers on tap. They'd probably get more sales if they had a few more cocktail options that didn't scream candy sweet...some of us in our 30s and 40s can't do the sweet drinks anymore. What a fun bar filled with plenty of arcade games that only cost 25-50 cents. The arcade is quite dark with limited lighting, but tons of fun lights & decor. The bar menu has fun drinks & food options. Their homemade nitro rootbeer is delicious but it is served with a ton of foam. The staff is super friendly, welcoming, & conversational. Passed by this place while walking around the Hillsboro Tuesday Night Market. My husband and I looked at each other and smiled then headed inside. At the door we were met by the very informative owner of this really cool Retro Arcade right in the middle of downtown Hillsboro. It's an all 80's themed spot with a Speqkeasy type bar in the back featuring cool 80's themed cocktails dubbed "The Bar that Time Forgot". One drink is called Red Dawn Rimmed with pop rocks! They have 80's throwback beers can and bottle and a couple on tap. Also a great features drink is the Root84 Nitro infused Handcrafted Draight Root Beer served up in an ice mug or spike it up with vanilla vodka or your favorite shot. They also have a handful of food items to snack on while you play the arcade games and listen to some great 80's music. Game play is 25c as originally played when we were kids. Just went here today and it was pretty awesome! Brought my kids in and it was like stepping into the 80's. Or if you ask my daughter it was like stepping into the show "stranger things". The entire place is like the greatest time portal into the 80's! It is decorated to look like the arcades in the 1980's with all your favorite upright and cocktail table video and pinball games, hella rad 80's music, a bodacious 21+ bar with themed cocktails, and all the games cost 1 token (25 cents), just like the 80's! I can't rave enough about the retro snack bar filled with delicious chips, soda, candy and the sure-to-be famous Grilled Pizza Sandwich! I ordered that sandwich with some Zots candy and I was immediately in love. It was on hella tubular Texas toast with garlic butter, pizza sauce, pepperoni with various cheeses. My mouth is watering just thinking about how utterly scrumptious that sandwich is! There are tons of games to play, I didn't have time to play them all! Some of my favorite games included Pac Man, Missle Command, Donkey Kong Junior, Dig Dug, and RoadBlasters. It was super rad to get to play the cocktail style games again, it's been so long! You can also rent the cocktail style games for your own party or event for $250/day, which includes one game delivery and pick up! But wait, there's more! You can rent out Arcade 2084 for your own private party or event! The prices are listed on the website at www.arcade2084.com. The staff are taking all Covid-19 precautions very seriously. The games are all socially distanced with hand sanitizer available on tables in between machines. They are also constantly cleaning the games after use. This was very important for me to feel safe and be able to fully enjoy my time at Arcade 2084! Arcade 2084 is open Tuesday-Thursday, 3-10pm and with a $5 cover Friday-Sunday, 12-10pm. This place is a blast! I went on a Thursday when they have karaoke. I could never do it, but it was a great vibe, everyone was having fun and being super encouraging. The cocktails are well-balanced and really inventive, especially the seasonal special cocktails (the Pumpkin Russian is my current fav). Shana, the bartender, also makes amazing jello shots. Awesome vintage arcade for us of the age group to relive our teenage years. I love that it's an adult's only full bar. And the drinks are sensational! My family has relayed me the saga of this arcade throughout the pandemic. Opened just as the shutdowns began, plagued by a downtown business group that offered almost no support to its membership, crushed by a labor shortage (including bar staff) and--despite its location in the "Silicon Forest"--burdened by a host of townies who walked in and were routinely baffled by simple concepts like tokens, the overarching theme, food ordering, and not allowing children after a certain hour. I knew I was going to love this place immediately. Listen, I'm a born-and-raised Jersey Shore arcade kid and I love a big room like Next Level across town. I can spend a whole day amid 400+ games and have a great time. But much like the boardwalk arcades, sometimes it can get a bit overwhelming. Stepping into Arcade 2084 would be like stepping into an '80s or '90s mall or town arcade in 1984. It's dark, which I didn't realize I missed. Besides the faint glow of blue LED, it's lit up by the games... which are all restricted to the '80s. Yes, there are mainstays like Pac Man and Dig Dug, but you'll see gems like Two Tigers, Escape From the Planet of the Robot Monsters, Gravitar and OG Street Fighter. Go back to The Bar That Time Forgot, and you're transported to a small multiplex's snack bar in the middle of a showing of Mask or Tuff Turf. Popcorn, pizza sandwiches, nachos, ACTUAL hot dogs (it's Oregon, so that's more rare than you would think), Skittles, Pop Rocks, Zots, Ring Pops and root beer. But you're also several decades older now, so there's '80s-vintage craft beer (Redhook, Widmer, North Coast) and '80s themed cocktails, tiki drinks and hot toddies. Downtown Hillsboro lacks two things: Decent bars and entertainment. The live theater here is warmed-over dinner theater written by liberal arts majors and the best full bar on this strip is only five years removed from being a methy, windowless billiard hall. Arcade 2084 is a place you can go, load up on tokens, get some drinks and bites, and be in a world of your own for a while. It's something the now-deceased bowling alley never quite grasped and something the glorified wedding venue across the street may never understand: A functional downtown needs a comfortable third place for adults. Beyond food, beyond beer bars, it needs something that people over 21 and under 65 can gravitate to and call their own. If the owner put the occasional bad VHS movie on the astronaut screens every so often, I wouldn't complain. But in its current state, Arcade 2084 is exactly what it wanted to be and just what downtown needed. read more

Super fun place to spend an hour. My kids (and husband!) love arcades, but we usually don't want to commit to a whole arcade day. We found Arcade 2084 while wandering around Hillsboro's main street on our way to Syun. My favorite part about this arcade is that it's truly child-friendly. Too many times, I'll walk into an arcade and see a few games that are inappropriate for children. We have teenagers and a 7 year old, so finding entertainment for the entire family can be tough. Since all the games are 80s games, they're clean enough for a little one. My second favorite feature of Arcade 2084 is that it's easy to walk in, change $5 at the machine near the front of the arcade, and play for as long as you want. No all day fees, not a big commitment. No need to struggle to figure out the payment system at a new arcade. Just bring some cash - although you can pay at the bar if you only have credit card. Each play costs 25 cents. What a deal! What a cool place! The owner is awesome. He stays in character the whole time, is very personable, knows about all the games, and concocted some killer drinks. We tried all but 2 of the signature cocktails - hubs liked the Ninja Turtle the best, and I liked Purple Rain the best. The chicken quesadilla was DELICIOUS. It's small and there aren't a ton of games, but that's perfect for me. Much less overwhelming than Ground Kontrol. I can't wait to return with friends. read more

This place is committed to the 80's aesthetic. There's a lot of authentic early 80's arcade machines, and even the ones I was not familiar with were pretty fun to compete with friends on. The cocktails were also really good, with similarly 80's themed names and the ones I ordered had the rim of the glass lined with pop rocks. The cover as of this writing is $7.50 and provides an equivalent amount of tokens to play video games with, which is definitely enough for anyone looking to explore the games available (most or all of which require 1 token). As a point of criticism, the sound system is localized in the back (playing 80's music, of course) so if you're near the machines in the back it is difficult to talk with anyone around you. Also, the selection of beers is limited to beers available in the 80's, so if you're not into pilsner or hefeweizens you'll have to settle for the cocktails instead. I really like the idea of this place, but the games are a little too vintage. Most of them are very early Atari era stuff and pretty boring. A lot of the machines have funky joysticks that make the games more frustrating than they have to be as well. This place would be infinitely better if it had some early to mid-90s games. The newest game they had was the original Street Fighter. Street Fighter 2 was the good one. This place needs some Final Fight, Fatal Fury, Streets of Rage, Neo Geo, the TMNT arcade game etc. Maybe they're hung up on the 80s. But those of us that were born in the late 70s or 80s spent a lot of time in 90s arcades. read more

My pizza was brought to the table cold, and I informed the waitress. She said "it was hot when it came out of the oven" then walked away. I wish I had photos, my dad looked like a kid again playing his favorite games from 40 years ago,, and the owner took my advice about improving accessibility very seriously (which i appreciate quite a lot). the entire space is accessible to walkers and wheelchairs and the owner is very friendly and nice :) the drinks are unique and delicious. food is hot and fast to serve. dad says it is fun and he will come again for sure. they took the pandemic seriously and wiped down the tables VERY OFTEN. this place is clean, fun, and an absolute classic for upright games. dad says these games are the most popular that his dad has not seen or played in decades. read more

Arcade 2084 has a well-curated collection of 80's classics that are all in great condition. The staff is incredibly friendly and attentive. The cocktails are great and they play an eclectic 80's mix that runs from Prince to Madonna to Quiet Riot. Oh, and the Covid protocol is meticulous. This place was awesome! I'm a 19 yr old and never experienced the 80's arcade era. I've always heard of so many stories of my dad playing with all of his friends for hours on end. I've always wanted to experience something like that for myself so my dad and I tried it out together. It was a total blast and the worker there was really nice (I forget his name). We ended up being glued to the Atari football game for about an hour playing game after game. This whole experience really felt like I was a kid in the 80's and would totally recommend it! read more

Eric is the most personable business owner on Main St. He goes out of his way to ensure an exceptional experience. The staff is extremely COVID safe and every machine is cleaned/sanitized routinely. Considering the size of the place and social distancing guidelines, this arcade is packed with options. Arcade 2084 also offers drinks and eats that make you feel like you've travelled back to 1984. A $5 weekend / $7.50 weekday cover charge is very reasonable and feels appropriate for a small business accommodating customers during this time. It's worth checking out if you've got the time. Worst case scenario, you donated a few bucks to a small business. The other reviews on here really don't do this place justice. Swung by with my partner eager to see what this place was so we could become regulars when things open since we love spending weekends at Ground Kontrol and it would have been nice to avoid the drive. This is an unusual review to write because I'm an irrepressibly optimistic person and don't tend to write reviews for bad experiences. The owner met us outside and we asked if we could check out which games were available (obviously with COVID guidelines we weren't sure if that was allowed). Was also hoping to grab a drink or something. Owner, not satisfied with a simple "no" followed up with "even if it were allowed I would have a problem with you looking at our games. It's part of the experience to find out inside and you've heard of the internet so I'm sure you can look there". Wow. Went here last weekend and was totally underwhelmed. All the games are $0.25 per play (which makes sense because these are almost always the 25 cent games at any arcade anyway). There are approximately two dozen games in the place and all of them are from the 80s. The older games are generally my favorite, but it would be nice to have a few semi-current games also. Here's the really weird part... On weekends they charge a $5 entrance fee. That's insane for an empty place within 2 hours of closing. If I had realized there were only about 24 games before we paid the cover I would have said "Never mind" and walked back out the door. For comparison, here is a quick overview of a few other local arcades and their cover charges: * Next Level Pinball & Arcade (Hillsboro) is by far my favorite. The place is huge with over 200 games and is always Free Play for $16 all day. Games vary from early to the most current. * QuarterWorld (SE Portland) charges $3 to get in after 6pm but they have around 100 games. Game play range is $0.25-$1.00 for the very newest pinball games * Ground Kontrol (NW Portland) has around 150 games and no cover except on Free Play nights when it is $7. On a Saturday night we were the only three people in the place other one other person and an overabundance of staff. Cover charges should be reserved for a place people want to be. There's nothing here to keep you entertained longer than an hour at the most. We lasted about 30-45 minutes before we decided to cut our losses and go get a late dinner. Truthfully- even if there wasn't a cover it wouldn't really be worth the time to venture in here unless every other arcade and bar in town was closed. I think I'd rather pick up a six pack and play video games at home. I was driving so I didn't drink that night, but according to my friends that were there with me the drinks were not bad but kinda strong. I have nothing against strong drinks so this gets the place an additional star. Overall... Zzzzzzzzz. read more
