We have always enjoyed eating at Captain D's. It is the only place to get grilled fish dinners…read morerather than breaded and deep fried. They also have a good variety of side options, not just fries. We like the music. We enjoy the environment. Our last two visits, however, have been less than pleasant. Some things need management attention. Last time, it was our fault that we arrived a half hour before the dining room closed. Employees want to get home and management wants to limit hours. By that time the crew was deep into cleaning and closing. We were ushered (kindly) into the tables in front. Two closers were mopping, stacking chairs on tables, putting away the condiments counter, just quite busy. Sweeping two feet from our feet felt too close and we feared stirred up dust. Despite assurances, we knew we were in their way and they wanted us gone. Today, we made sure to arrive at supper time, about 5:30. But this time there was no music playing and the whole room was frigidly cold. This was the third day when outside temps were in the mid-70's, therefore minimal air conditioning would have sufficed. But no one had thought to adjust the setting from when it was 80-90 degrees outside. I guess it was 65 degrees in the blasting air. Most customers are senior adults who prefer a mid-70's temp. We were so uncomfortable that we knew we had to leave. We scraped our food into take-home containers and left. Management should solve both these problems. It's simply putting yourself into the customers' shoes. It's just thoughtfulness. That was what was lacking. We'll go back because the food is very good but probably only order through the takeout window. In a while we'll try inside again but third strike and you'll be out.

The food was hot, fresh, and tasty, and the service was fast! It was such a positive experience that we went back four days later, hoping for the same. But this time, we made the mistake of going through the drive-through because the line didn't look too long. The service was extremely slow, and we only did a cursory check of our order. When we got back to the house, we found that the dressings had been left out for both of our salads! We didn't want to make the long trip back to get the dressing while the rest of the food got cold, so we went ahead and tried to eat them dry. Not a tasty experience at all--especially with lettuce that was already a bit wilted. I'm not sure I'll be able to convince the others to give them another try. But if we do, we'll order when we're almost there, go inside to pick up the food, and make sure every last item that's supposed to be in the order is included!

But they do need to build a location in Martinsville now that the new I-69 is completed there. I ordered my usual 4-way with onions and absolutely inhaled a small size. I should have gotten a medium size. It had been too long since I had my favorite chili. Service was immediate since I was first one for dinner time. The temperature inside the restaurant was a pleasant room temperature and not freezing cold like a lot of places are. They have a display case behind the cashier station with several products for sale that have the Skyline Chili name and logo on them. Items such as hats, T-shirts, mugs, knit caps and their chili in a can.

All of the food was okay and no issues with the order. A bit too much mustard for my liking but really there isn't an option to do it yourself apparently at this time. We were immediately greeted with muddy floors and had to watch where we stepped. Ordering food was fine and seemed normal but once it came out I was pretty disappointed. The salad ingredients were not fresh and appeared old a top my salad. My grandmother's salad was loaded with toppings but had old salad underneath. She went to fill her cup and there were sticky floors all surrounding the beverage dispenser so I had to step in and maneuver to it for her. The teas were much more sugary than usual. I did not get to take as many pics as I would've liked because I was trying to make sure my grandmother was in a good spot.
