We had been patients of this practice and Dr Pham for all of our children for years and even continued to be patients after we moved far away from the office. Once Dr Pham left, there was no reason for us to stay as the front office was constantly rude and inflexible. We moved to another provider and are happy we did. I have been taking my son here for 5 years. When I originally started, we loved Dr. Pham. I still think he is a great doctor and would continue using him if the office itself was better. I have a newborn and had to make an appointment for both kids on a day dad could help me as I am still recovering from childbirth and if you've ever tried to wrangle multiple kids in an office setting, its nice to have a little backup if you can! The office has a "Covid Policy" of only 1 parent in the exam room. HOWEVER they allow you to wait in the waiting area together. I made 2 separate appointments to allow one parent with each child to try to comply with their rule. They proceeded to take both of my sons back and only allow one of us with them. This policy is RIDICULOUS and absolutely overkill. Especially considering we were all together 2 minutes before they called us back. The office staff is uncaring and generally outright rude, except for one young lady who is occasionally in the office. DO NOT TRUST THIS PLACE OR DR. PHAM! Dr. Pham was great for routine check ups but as soon as my son got sick he was an absolute TERRIBLE provider with lack of knowledge! I took my son in twice to him for fevers and a cold and just brushed it off and said not to worry till he hits a 104 temperature. After spending numerous copays I decided to see Dr.Marcelo and she said my son had an ear infection and prescribed antibiotics! Thank you Dr. Marcelo for actually caring about my sons health. De Pham has a BIG heart with us the parents and with babies I'm so glad we stayed with him, he always makes me feel like I'm doing my best, he's not one of those drs who scare you with things with nonsense... or drs that just doesn't answer your questions. Yes, he may not talk too much like other drs, but he speaks the enough and the most importantly. Dr Pham always tells you what is normal, and what isn't but without scaring you or making you feel bad, he tells you what he expects with babies development in a very warm way. I think for a new mom everything it's scary & new... so I always ask him my questions and he always answers me with calm and understanding. I'm so happy with his team & with him! My complaint isn't with the doctor. Doctor Pham was nice and very informative. My complaint is with the nurse who gave my son his vaccine. My son went in for his 2 year checkup and needed one hep A vaccine. The nurse had zero personality and was extremely rough with my son. One vaccine and he had 3 puncture marks in his leg! I lived in Surprise and have been taking my two sons to Dr. Nicholas Pham for over 9 years. We recently moved to Phoenix and I still drive the hour to see him because he is a one of a kind pediatrician. He has helped my oldest son through many transitions in his life and through many medical and sometimes emotional issues. My youngest son is still a patient of his and he has helped with both routine and non-routine issues. His insights, compassion and concern have helpled treat his ADHD and have allowed him to go from remedial classes to working above his grade level. The wait here is usually always pretty quick but DO NOT get your son circumcised here! Dr Marcel did my son's circumcision and she cut way into the shaft of the penis she cut way too much on the left side and not enough on the right side. She botched my Lil boys circumsizion. I feel awful I paid 300 for them to deform my son :( now I still have to peel it back next clean it on the right side like he's not even circumcised. The other side doesn't look right and I read that he most likely will have painful erections later in life. When I took my baby back the doctor completely dismissed my concerns even though there was a large chunk missing out of the shaft! Not the skin the shaft itself. Don't let dr. Had our 6 month check up yesterday and it was just ok. The ladies at the front reception are still unfriendly and will actually take phone calls while you are standing right in front of them...even if they were talking to you first. The medial technicians don't actually talk TO my baby but will tell me how cute he is and talk to me about him. It would be nice if she interacted with him. She wouldn't even touch him until she had to give him his shots and even then, she didn't actually speak to him. They still call me "Mom" even though I've corrected them and asked them to call me by my name. Again, I'm not YOUR Mom and when I've asked you to address me by my name and you still don't, it's obvious that you don't really care about my business. had an appointment at 3:30 to get my sons 15mo wellness and vaccinations. we get there and the lady at the front desk informs us our appointment was at 3. mind you, I have in all 25 years of my life never been late and NEVER gotten the time for an appointment wrong. This place is ok. Dr. Marcelo is very thorough. But as I read most of the bad reviews are from ignorant, fear induced parents. Dr.'s in general aren't there to "heal" any patient. They just ease fear induced ignorance by prescribing medications that are actually harmful to our kids. Fevers are the bodies way to kill whatever toxins are polluting our bodies. Feed your kids organic, non processed food, let their immune systems do what they were created to do, don't inject your kids with heavy metals,adjuvants, preservatives etc. But yes, if you need a pediatrician this place will do. read more

Separate rooms for poorly and well children is a stroke of genius! A little bit of a wait, but that's no problem when weighed against the service you receive. Very modern facility with knowledgeable staff, and the administrator was just awesome. The doctors are great (I really miss Johanna, though...she was fantastic!). But, watch out when you schedule appointments. They just called to cancel the appointment I scheduled for my son's checkup...guess they determined they really did want to close the office on New Year's Eve after all, even though I specifically asked them about that date when I scheduled the appointment. Very disappointing. I've also had checkups cancelled in the past during the summer...they open the books, and then I guess the doctor wanted to take a vacation. Maybe you could figure out if the office is closed BEFORE opening the appointment books? You only open them a month in advance anyway! If you are not done training then you should not answer phones and answer questions. Being told one thing and then have it taken back and told another is the last thing you want to deal with when your child is in need of seeing a doctor. Unbelievable. I have 6 children and have had 5 of them see this pediatrician over the last 7 years. I called to schedule my daughter for immunizations this week and was told that I owe them money, and that they had sent me three notices, which they did not. The receptionist put me on hold to 'check into it', and after a few minutes someone else picked up and said "hello? How can I help you?" So I explained and was again told that I had been sent notices and that I owed money for my deductible. That doesn't make sense, for an office visit, so I asked what had been on the claim, and she put me on hold. I was at work, so after sitting on hold for over 5 minutes I hung up. No one called me back, and I haven't been able to call, having a hectic week at work. Now today I got a letter from the office manager advising me that I can take my children to another office, as they are no longer interested in providing care for my family. $140 bill, which they did not bother to justify or explain, and they are washing their hands! The nurse practitioner and Dr Marcelo are very nice, but the office staff are rude and disorganized. Do yourself a favor, find a different pediatrician. read more

Awful place to bring your kid. My son was born with a hernia. The Hernia was stopping his testicles from descending. Dr Sham, I mean Pham said it wasn't a big deal and it would resolve itself. He also ignored 7 ear infections over the first year, as well as not diagnosing him with RADS or providing us with a nebuliser so he could breathe. We were first time parents and may have been too quick to bring our son to the Dr when he ran a fever or coughed all night. And Dr Sham was very quick to point it out. He frequently would roll his eyes, talk down to my wife and I, and leave the visit with out ever examining our son. Because we were recommended by a friend who just had her first kid 3 months before us, and she was recommended by her friend who had a 5 year old, we thought he was supposed to be good, and we deserved this treatment. Again we were being overly protective as new parents. Well then the day of reckoning came. The family that has the 5 year old was having immediate surgery to fix their son's undescended testicles. This was interesting because Dr Sham told us there was no problem with our son's issue and it would fix itself. Turns out our friend with the kid who was 3 months older then ours also had the same issue and her specialist recommended immediate surgery as testicles that do not descend in the first few weeks after birth will not, and there is usually a hernia blocking the decent. Smash cut to us firing Mr. Sham and going to the specialist for the same procedure as our friends. He missed it for at least the 3 of us. The family with the 5 year old may never be able to have kids because of his negligence. Our new pediatrician is amazing, our son has never been more healthy since shaking free of that monster, and his practice. We got tubes for his ears and that stopped all the infections. We got his RADS under control and now we don't worry that an attack could stop him from being able to breathe while he is at daycare. Please avoid this place and Mr. Sham, for your kids sake. read more

I have been with this office for 13 years. I have never liked the office staff. I have four children when I do my well checks I was told they can not book all four at the same time because it isn't fair to the other patients. How is it not fair each kid gets their own appointment no different then bringing four different kids in. I scheduled an appointment doe today. I took my child in for a routine physical. Today I showed up at 145. I was told we wouldn't be seen because we were late for the appointment was scheduled 130. I explained that I thought the appt was 145. She proceeded to explain they only schedule on the half hour/hour those appointments. I apologized but I had it as 145. She said they could not get us in. Meanwhile on the sign in there were four people above my sign in with 130 appointments. I am expected to believe they all can be seen at 130? My sons been going to Dr. Pham for about a year and if I could rate Dr. Pham personally, he gets 5 stars. My complaint is with the front office staff and the triage department. Office staff is always rude and acts like they hate answering phones and dealing with patients. And any time I have called with a concern with my son and needed advice/ help from the triage department, the front office takes down the message to give to a triage doctor, and it takes them hours on end for them to return my phone call. There's no reasonable call back time, and they never can get someone on the phone at the time of the call. And it's not like i call at 4pm when the office is close to closing time. I call early to mid morning and don't get a phone call back til 3 or after. What's the point in calling your child's pediatrician for help if they don't help within a timely manner? Dr. Pham is worth it, if you're willing to put up with the way the rest of his office works. read more

We've been seeing Dr. Pham for 2 1/2 years and we've always appreciated his professionalism and kindness. When we went in for my youngest child's 1st check up at 2 weeks, she wasn't gaining weight. I was breastfeeding and he was so kind and understanding. He reassured me that I was doing all I could and that I could either supplement or keep trying. He made me feel so much better about my efforts to be a good mom. He didn't push anything on me. He gave me choices and proceeded with understanding. We have never had to wait an extended amount of time to be seen and Dr. Pham promptly gets back to us when we call after hours. read more

The TL;DR version: If Dr. Marcelo leaves, we will follow her or go to a different practice. She's 5 stars, the office and Dr. Pham are 1 star. Maybe 2 if I'm being generous. We've been bringing our children to this office for almost three years now. I have mixed feelings about the office, and if I were a first time parent, knowing what I know now I would likely go elsewhere. However we are established here with our children, and I do generally like Dr Marcelo, so we will keep coming here pretty much only for her. Cons: -Almost always running behind. We usually wait a long time between the waiting room and exam room. I am always a few minutes early, so it's frustrating to wait for so long. -Dr. Pham's breastfeeding advice is TERRIBLE. Do not listen to his breastfeeding advice. He told me not to feed my newborn more than every two hours! I was a first time parent and didn't know better. Clearly he has no education on breastfeeding- feeding ON DEMAND is paramount to a healthy breastfeeding relationship and milk supply. Also, cluster feeding is normal, healthy, and though sometimes hard for mama, it's very important for milk supply. We listened to his shitty advice, my son was always crying and wanting to nurse, but we tried to hold him off. My son ended up not gaining enough and then we had to come back a week later for a weight check- I fed on demand between those appointments and he gained a pound in a week. This is where I learned that doctors aren't these all powerful, all knowing beings. He has no business giving breastfeeding advice what so ever. We won't see him. -The referrals process is SLOW. My second son needed to see a specialist. It took them over three weeks to refer him, and I even called and told them who the only provider in network for us was, yet they STILL tried other providers first?! They also didn't send a referral to the office or any information like they claimed they did, the specialist's office had to call for it. These delays meant our son had to have a more invasive procedure because he missed the window for the endoscopic version as he was now too old- we would have liked to have had both options to consider. -The medical assistants seem to always botch getting height. The lines they make for head and feet never line up, and then they measure on a diagonal, so the height is never accurate. This leads to infants going from taller to shorter, or no change between appointments and then the providers worry when really nothing is wrong. Pro: -Dr. Marcelo is wonderful, very knowledgeable and intelligent. She has good bedside manner. She noticed early on a deformity that our second son had, which from my understanding is frequently missed by pediatricians. We really like her, and will keep taking our kids to Surprise Peds only because she is a great doctor, and she is familiar with our kids. She also remembers us, even though we really only come for well checks. Every time I have seen her outside of Surprise Peds she says hi to me. read more

The doctors at Surprise Pediatrics are great, however they get one star because their front desk staff is AWFUL. I asked the administrative office clerk, Melissa, if they received my fax and they said, "no." to which I responded, "Why would I have a confirmation that you received it?" After arguing with me that she did not have the paperwork she finally decided to humor me and check, she put me on hold. A few minutes later she magically found the paperwork. I asked Melissa to fax records to a surgeon that my son's pediatrician had recommended for my his operation. The surgeon's office needs it right away for processing so I requested the paperwork be sent over that day. Melissa asked me when the appointment would be and then she told me she would get the required paperwork there before the scheduled appointment. I checked with the surgeon's office and they confirmed that they have not received any paperwork from the pediatrics office. So, I called the doctors office, once again, and Melissa told me that she sent it the previous day at 2:30 p.m. which I found interesting since at 3:15 p.m. that same day she had claimed she had not even received the original release forms from me (the original, magical fax). When I mentioned this fact, she told me that her fax must have a different time stamp on it because she sent it and it was received an hour before she told me she did not have it. After the fact she tried to move the blame from her fax machine and place it on me saying that I must have given her the wrong number. Surprise Pediatrics should be embarrassed with their office staff unprofessional and lazy behavior. The interaction with these people who handle sensitive health information for my children has been extremely unpleasant. read more

As I sit here with my 9 month old son, I am literally thinking of all the angry things I want to bring to the table at my sons 9 month check up this Friday. First off, I will say I chose surprise peds because they were referred to me by a family member. Dr Pham was the dr we saw at the hospital and seemed hurried to move on with his day. Over the course of the be the next 9 months we have kept our appointments and had no trouble with the office staff. Dr Marcelo is kind and soft natured but often uninformative. Dr Pham is more firm and comes off abrupt but is definitely well educated. So here is why I have given 2 stars... My son Kyle is no one special to them and it often feels like he is just another body in the waiting room. Recently, 2 weeks before Halloween my son became severely congested after doing all my mommy tricks ( humidifiers, saline spray, boogie suckers etc..) I finally made a dr apt. I paid my co pay of 20$ and was told " lungs sounded good, he has a cold" ok I left. A week later, he is STILL congested and now has a fever, back to the doc, $20 co pay, this time given antibiotics for sinus and ear infection, 10 days on that, my baby seems happier, but not better and had developed a hacking cough, back to the dr we go, $20 more dollars "lungs are good, just a cold" 2 weeks later, I am sooo fed up! I have a baby that has thick green mucous and can't sleep or drink his bottle, he coughs so hard he gags, his eyes are purple and blood shot... Back to the dr, this time dr Pham sees me and asks 20 questions and because he doesn't have a fever, rash and appears in good spirits I am told to give my baby 2.5ml of children's Zyrtec daily that its probably allergies and that I can expect him to be like this until at least April. WHAT?!?! So, fine, I give the Zyrtec every morning like I'm told to and for a week, I have a baby zombie. No coo's or giggles. Not interested in playing just sleepy and lifeless. Not to mention, STILL congested and coughing badly! We are now dealing with this for almost 2 months. I've paid at least 5 co pays in that time, bought baby Vicks, warm mist humidifiers, cool mist humidifiers, saline spray, saline drops, a nose frida( because the bulb was useless), children's benedryl, children's Zyrtec.... And here I am at 3 am sitting in a rocker with my baby because he has been up coughing and unable to nose breath all night. I just don't feel heard or well taken care of. It's not about the money, I'm not a antibiotic lover, but I am a mom with concerns and a 50 hour work week job. I'd like to get more then 3 hours of sleep, miss less work for what I will deem useless dr visits, and get some answers. If on Friday the dr's can't help us we will be looking for a different office. read more

I have seen all three doctors (Dr. Pham only once in the hospital when my third was born). Because he was the attending pediatrician I fell into this office and have felt grateful ever since. The doctors are friendly (especially the PA Johanna!) The staff is courteous, helpful, and really know their stuff!! I particularly appreciate their knowledge on billing situations. I have only had to wait once or twice, mostly I am seen quickly. I've moved a lot and therefore have had my kids go to a lot of different pediatricians and this is by far my favorite office. read more

DO NOT BRING YOUR BUSINESS TO THIS OFFICE!!! I am so disgusted with this pediatric office that I am giving up precious nighttime sleep to write this review in hopes that it will help other parents make an informed decision on where to take their children for pediatric care. We were completely unimpressed by this office very shortly after our daughter was born 15 months ago. Dr. Pham and Dr. Marcelo gave my husband and I completely different advice on the proper way to breast feed our newborn, which was so frustrating for new parents who did not know anything! Our newborn lost a lot of weight after taking Pham's instructions and when we went back to our next checkup with Marcelo, we were told information that completely contradicted Pham. So frustrating. So we made sure to never again make an appointment with Pham or Marcelo. (We were also very turned-off by their personalities). The ONLY reason we continued to bring our business to this office for the next 15 months was due ENTIRELY to the amazing physician's assistant JOHANNA BROOKS. SHE IS FANTASTIC! Johanna Brooks is the only reason we chose this office in the first place...because of all HER good reviews. (Based on the reviews, we expected to not like Pham or Marcelo). Johanna is so wonderful but the experience I have had in the past week with Pham has disgusted me so much that I have no choice but to take my business elsewhere. My 15 month-old daughter is sick for the very first time. Being that my husband and I are first-time parents and our infant daughter is sick for the very first time, I thought it more than appropriate to use for the first time the after-hours on call service. This was the other reason we chose this pediatric office. We were comforted to know that we could call and speak with one of the pediatricians even after-hours. So when my daughter was vomiting and had diarrhea I decided to use this service to get some advice on what to do (I wasn't sure if Pedialyte was appropriate or if an anti-nausea medication existed for infants). Dr. Pham was so short with me on the phone and spoke to me like I was SUCH a bother (It was 9:30 on a Saturday morning). He had such an attitude with me and I had to pry out of him anything helpful at all. After hanging up the phone I was thoroughly annoyed but I was only a bit surprised. The real kicker came 8 days later. My daughter's symptoms had gotten a bit better in the past few days but reappeared worse than ever and this time, with a fever that was getting worse by the hour. I again decided to use the service that this office is so quick to advertise when they are recruiting new patients. I called Dr. Pham (8:30 Sunday night). Pham was so rude to me I still cannot even wrap my head around it. He spoke down to me in a way that was so disrespectful and so uncalled for. Having a pediatrician on call at all times is a service your office provides!!! So don't provide the service with a horrible attitude and make me feel like I am doing something wrong by asking completely valid questions pertaining to the health of my infant daughter. I did not even receive any helpful advice whatsoever. Bottom line, I simply cannot give my business to this practice any longer. Even though Johanna Brooks is wonderful, I cannot support a practice that is run by such an unprofessional, uncompassionate, and downright rude individual. This man is in the wrong profession. Dr. Pham should be ashamed of his performance as a pediatrician and should be ashamed of his business ethics. So disappointing. read more

I have been bringing my six children to Surprise pediatrics for seven years now. We started out seeing Dr. Pham and as others have said he is very knowledgeable but his approach to the individual patient can leave you feeling like just another face in his busy day. He is not the kind of doctor who is going to make your child feel at home while he is with them. Dr. Marcello is softer but not as knowledgeable. She isn't the outgoing type either, very quite and composed. Again in and out and just another patient. Our families favorite in this office is Johanna Brooks she is the physicians assistant. All of my children love her. She is kind and loving she address them all by name and gives them one on one attention. She listens closely to our concerns/symptoms and can answer any questions that we have " which are many" with intelligent responses. We don't just want to come in and be seen and diagnosed. We want to learn and understand what we need to do and how to do it. She is by far the best doctor in this office hands down. Sweet, mild, kind, caring, loving, she is family because that is how she makes you feel. She has gone above and beyond our expectations. Thank you Johanna we all love you! read more
