Chicken Shawarma
Dom J.

Saw this place on TikTok and thought I'd come and see if the influencers were telling the truth. They were and they weren't. TRUTHS: The Shawarma is flavorful for sure. Good seasoning. I also tried the falafel which was completely carried by the sauce that came with it. CAPS: The size of this thing is NOWHERE NEAR what's shown on socials. It's much smaller. OTHER NOTES: While the restaurant is super cute, the service was soooo lame. The person at the register wasn't welcoming, didn't want to answer any questions about the menu, and overall just made me feel like I was interrupting her day. All in all, I've had better everything: food and service. Pass.

Clean restaurant, tasty shawarma with a decent amount of meat... Most shawarma places shortchange the amount of meat they include, so i don't return to those ripoff joints... But I will return to this place for certain. Not a bad experience. Give this place a visit.

We came because they were trending on tiktok but unfortunately we had a mundane experience. Cashier didn't seem to want to be there. Food was okay. However, the cook was all smiles and genuine. We bought their green pastry and as we were leaving, cook came and gave us an extra one on the house.

For $16 I thought BEEF Shawerma Wrap would blow me away. Not even good.

This place is very viral, but not very good. Look at my reviews - I'm a VERY positive yelper. I go low when there is regret. Very over cooked beef. Super soggy fries, no flavor to garlic spread, dry and sad pita with the plate (bordering on stale), no flavor to hummus and cheap oil on top. Hummus mealy and chunky - not smooth and yummy. Way to pronounced lemon flavor in crispy beef shawarma. $20 and super small portion. This place is all hype and clearly paying influencers to post positive stuff. No bathroom to wash your hands in or use bathroom. $40 for a drink, a crispy shawarma, and a pork plate. I would absolutely roast this place but the kid working there seemed exhausted and was trying his best. Good for him. I literally just left. Don't go here for this kind of food. 2 star food.

Man, I love Ara's Lula Kebab Wraps. Especially the Lamb and Beef ones which are FIRE. I come all the way from Orange County once a month here, because of my business meetings with some important clients. Wish we had good Armenian restaurants in the OC. Not a lot of Armenians live in the OC, so I have to come to L.A when I want some of this good stuff. Anyways, I was here last night finishing up a late meeting, and I was feeling Ara;s Kebabs. SO I ordered 4 Lula Wraps, and they were delicious. Man, I have been coming here all year. I ll be back.

It was my first time trying Ara's Shawarma, and I was pleasantly surprised. I ordered the chicken shawarma, and it was really good -- flavorful, well‑seasoned, and I loved the crispy texture. For a first visit, it definitely made a great impression. I'd come back to try more of their menu for sure.

One guy at counter. They have a falafel option. Menu has a variety of pork chops, chicken thighs and breast, steak, lamb chops, hummus, cabbage and fries. I ordered the beef wrap and the falafel and was very happy with it. The rice was excellent and the roasted jalapeño, tomato and onion were delicious. Definitely will be back.

*Delayed post from April '25 Stopped here for a quick bite and found parking in the small lot in front. The space itself had a local street vibe with graffiti art on the walls and small tables. We ordered at the kiosk at the front and grabbed our order when it was called out. I was surprised at how busy it was both inside and for take out, especially after trying both chicken and pork wraps, since the meat was super dry from overcooking. The pork had a smoky flavor reminiscent of Chinese barbecue from some overlapping spice. The pepperoncinis added delicious spice and the pickled vegetables in sauce were also great, but the pita wasn't able to hold everything together, so be prepared to eat it with a fork and knife. I think it would have been more balanced with additional vegetables like lettuce or cabbage, and perhaps more creamy sauce to add moisture to the meat. It would help give more textural difference in the wrap too. We also ordered a cup of strawberries with chocolate. Sadly not all the strawberries were ripe, giving them little flavor, but the chocolate was very rich and thick, almost like Nutella, but without the hazelnut flavor. The pistachio sauce was very watery, therefore ridding it of flavor since it was so diluted. However, the golden knafeh flakes added a delightful crispy texture that kept every bite interesting.

I finally decided to stop by here for lunch, I tried their Pork Belly plate, it was delicious! I gotta try their other dishes and chocolate desserts. Uniformed firefighter can get a free plate of food. The place is nice and clean. Service is friendly and professional.

I'm always up late and tend to get cravings, so after seeing this spot all over Instagram, my boyfriend and I decided to check it out late at night. It's a small place but it was busy, which is usually a good sign. I ordered the chicken and beef shawarma crispy, and honestly--the hype is real. Everything was delicious, flavorful, and satisfying. Portions were generous, prices were very reasonable, and the fact that they're open late is a huge plus. Definitely a great late-night option and worth the stop.

If you're looking for flavorful and juicy shawarma, I recommend Ara's. The perfect blend of spices and fresh ingredients made every bite enjoyable. The staff were warm and hospitable. I met Mike who went out of his way to make our first visit a positive experience. He even gave baklava with on the house as a welcome treat. They have lots of options and I appreciate the large menu. Service was quick and the seating area comfortable. Parking gets a little tight during the day.

I read all the positive reviews, then ordered a 7-day trial of the Healthy Nutrition option. 3 meals a day, starting at "$41.95 + delivery**" (the asterisks were never explained tho I assumed they meant commensurate to delivery distance). Since I live super close (North Hollywood), I figured it would be minimal, it wound up being an additional $8/day, which, as you can imagine, does add up. Within the first 2 days, I received 2 pork chop meals after specifically opting out of pork. They allow you a maximum of 5 opt-outs for allergies or preference, after which they charge you for each additional one, so I stuck to the 5 free ones. Turns out "pork" and "pork chop" are two categories (because pork chops NOT made from pork are a thing I guess?), and I only opted out of pork in general, silly me. The rest of the food was too salty to eat. There was cross contamination (a blob of one food in another's container). Needless to say it was not appetizing. So I cancelled my plan after day 2. I hate to see food go to waste, no matter how bad. I was given a whole song and dance about rules and terms, which I still have not found on their website, certainly did not see it when placing my order, and they made me pay for 2 additional days before I could cancel. Then nickeled and dimed me on the remaining refund which I got only after several email follow-ups. Cost me $277.08 for essentially 2 days worth of 3-meal food of which I could realistically only eat the breakfasts. Yeah, expensive lesson learned.

From start to finish, everything was flawless. The food was not only superb in taste but also presented so beautifully that our guests have not stopped talking about the dishes, the attention to detail, and the way every plate felt like an experience itself. They took time to understand our vision and executed it with perfection. The night began with appetizers that included lemon-poached shrimp that were perfectly tender, light, and bursting with citrusy flavor. The stuffed mushrooms with pecorino and panko gave them a savory crunch that made them addictive, and the charcuterie skewers were colorful, delicious, and creative. But it didn't stop there. The Italian focus of the menu was nothing short of spectacular. The meatballs were unforgettable and seasoned in a way that had even the Italians in the room nodding with approval. Several guests commented that they were the best meatballs they'd ever tasted. The rigatoni with Bolognese sauce was rich, hearty and layered with authentic flavor, and the chicken cutlets with lemon and Parmesan were both stars of the evening-- so delicious that guests were going back for seconds (and thirds). To finish the night, dessert was a sweet surprise of tiramisu with whipped mascarpone and aginetti sprinkle cookies. Star Valley Foods delivered more than just a meal; they created an experience that elevated our celebration and left every one of our guests raving. Most importantly, the people behind this company are as professional as they are kind- genuinely sweet, attentive, and caring in a way that made us feel special and celebrated right alongside our guests. I had tried 3 or 4 other food services several years ago and each had their issues/drawbacks (one in particular was very problematic). Once I tried Z.E.N., I've never looked back. The food is fresh, healthy, and for the most part truly delicious! (which was not the case with some of the other services I used). The other great thing is that the menu is entirely customizable: they have their specials of the day for each meal (breakfast, lunch, dinner -- plus snacks and dessert if you go with that particular plan). But if a daily special doesn't appeal to you when you check the weekly menu in your online portal, there is an array of other choices you can make to substitute -- usually several to a dozen or so. I'm kind of a picky eater so I typically wind up substituting 1/3rd to half of the selections, depending. You are also allowed 3 "dislikes" that they will automatically substitute if in their daily specials. Anyway, the customer service is great and the drivers discreet. It may depend on location, but I typically receive my daily delivery between 5pm-7pm every day (meals for the next day). The food is in a zip-tie sealed container for safety, and on several ice packs to stay fresh if you aren't home or otherwise unable to retrieve it immediately; they leave it in the safe spot on my porch where I've indicated. The other thing that's customizable is the delivery schedule: I'm in and out of town a bit, so I month's worth of food deliveries might last 2 or 3 months depending on how I need to space it out (e.g., I typically don't have food delivered on weekends, or if I'm away for a week or two I just put the service on pause for those days -- again, all super easy to adjust in the online portal). And yes, every time I use the service I do lose a few pounds. Highest marks from me, I can't recommend it more highly for anyone who either wants to lose weight, take a break from cooking, or simply want to reset and eat more healthy. The pricing seems fair to me, especially since I'm not spending nearly as much at the grocery store while I'm on the plan.

I ordered for pick-up at 11:30 and the initial notification from the restaurant stated my food would be ready by 11:45. I knew parking would be bad so I left a little early and at 11:24 I received a message saying my order was ready. If this was almost any other type of cold food, I think it would be fine to let the food sit and wait. But for hot foods or sushi like this, a 20 minute jump in time isn't great for someone expecting their order at least at 11:30 so although I appreciate my food being ready sooner, it's not always a good thing. The other issue is the kitchen or pick-up area. HiDozo Van Nuys is in a ghost kitchen set up with a tiny lobby and no signs or directions on whether you're even in the right space because you don't know which restaurants are here. I had to deal with 5-6 food delivery drivers that didn't know their heads from their asses and just hung out in the lobby. There is one girl working that is very sweet and trying to manage it all but this just isn't an ideal pick-up location. I ordered the Deep Dive box $54 along with an order of chu-toro $8 and unagi $8. There is no question that the food looks stunning and the presentation is exceptional. The bags and boxes are all high quality and better than what you typically find for takeout from Sugarfish. Sadly the actual sushi presented a mixed bag of feelings. I started with the tuna sashimi which was cut perfectly and tasted great, then moved onto some of the nigiri including the hotate, salmon, albacore, and hamachi. The fish is all absolutely delicious, buttery, rich, tender, and flavorful. The issue comes down to the rice. The rice is pretty dry and bland. It's also clear that nobody is hand forming this rice. It looks WAY too perfect and symmetrical, and every piece looks exactly the same. Even the most skilled sushi chef with decades of experience could not get sushi rice this exact every single time. So I did a little digging and videos on their Instagram don't show the rice ever being formed by the chefs. It's always ready and the chef simply takes it from one hand, adds the fish, and forms the fish over the rice, never once actually making the rice himself. Before I moved onto the tuna nigiri I had the unagi and although soft and buttery, it was ice cold and clearly not charred or grilled. For $8 (which mind you, is the same price as the chu-toro) I would've expected quality at the level of the chu-toro. As for the tuna nigiri they were all fantastic. At least, the fish was. The rice was still meh. The tuna, akami, toro, and chutoro were all buttery, soft, and you could definitely tell them apart. But sadly, once again, the rice was not great. Here's the kicker - the rice in the futomaki roll was actually good. I wouldn't doubt that the fresher rice is kept and used for the rolls because the texture and bite was so much better. The minced tuna was a delight and this was one of my favorites here. Overall, with the price of $70 before tax, it would be nice if HiDozo actually focused on the rice considering a chef of this stature wouldn't and shouldn't neglect the key component of sushi. Any person with a spec of food and cultural insight knows that "sushi" means vinegared rice so the toppings are a second to the rice and don't have to be fish or seafood related. But still, this isn't a place I would revisit or recommend.
