I looked online for breakfast pastries over quite a wide area of southern Virginia and there just is not much going on south of Roanoke, but I managed to find this place in Radford. The spread, of which I have pictured only a fraction, exceeded expectations. The options had a Mediterranean bent, and included some gluten-free and vegan creations based on nuts that looked impressive. The more conventional cakes and pastries made for a tough choice. I ended up with some kind of sponge cake that was quite excellent. I would easily return for any number of other pastries, to say nothing of the fact that they had a crepe menu as well. My chai was a basic syrupy creation and far less impressive. Perhaps coffee is their focus. But as a bakery, this was a distinctive place that is well worth seeking out. read more

Oh la la so many kinds of baklava Usually desert comes last, but the desert counter deserves to be the first part of this review. The answer to any and all is honey cake. I am sad to live 8 hours from Radford because I have fallen head over heels for this masterpiece. Brunch was an iced americano, shakshouka and chicken over rice. The plates were small and truthfully I was still hungry after my shakshouka but the flavor was 10/10. I've never had it before, but the cafe has convinced me to swipe right when it pops up again in the future. My boyfriend was still hungry after his chicken and rice as well but agreed that it was very delicious. The space is uplifting and the owner is personable and welcoming. He recommended the honey cake to us and man, I'm glad we took his recommendation. What a great place! Radford is one lucky little town. read more

Keywords: Transphobia, discriminatory owner, immature, careless behavior, lack of critical thinking The atmosphere in Arabica was pleasant enough; however, the mean-spirited, venomous, and discriminatory conversation I overheard between the owner, Abdul, and a barasita (white girl, straight hair, a few tattoos on her arm--including one that circles around her elbow), was enough to prevent me from returning or recommending. A brief recap of what happened: I overheard a conversation mocking a trans co-worker. The barista started to gossip about her trans co-worker. Then, to prove her point, she pulled up their coworker's social media to find evidence in this person's life. She and the owner pointed and laughed as they viewed photos and watched videos featuring the changes their co-worker had undergone related to queer identity. It was so mean-spirited. Unkind. And unnecessary. Not to mention how completely oblivious they were to the fact that their conversation was taking place publicly and within earshot of several customers--many of whom I can also assume are either gender queer themselves or care about folks who are queer. Talk about out of touch! I had enough when the owner shook his head a few minutes later and said, "I really didn't know. You think I would have hired her?" I am disappointed in both individuals. Plus, they rarely have drop coffee past 2:00 PM. Wack! To the person they may have been talking about: I'm sure you are wonderful. The behavior of those two is what makes the world feel more suffocating and small. You doing your thing is what makes the world fantastic! I hope you find future employment in environments that value and model maturity and critical thinking. Cause it ain't at Arabica. You deserve the world. read more

The Arabica is an absolute gem! We stopped on our way through Radford and instantly fell in love. The atmosphere is gorgeous with Arab motifs that carry through even into the glassware! The walls are filled with beautiful local art for sale and there is abundant comfortable seating. I was very tempted by the delicious pastry cases which had everything I could ever crave: crepes, cakes, cookies, brownies, cannolis, tiramisu, danishes and more. The store also offers both savory and sweet middle eastern options like shakshuka, shawarma, and baklava. The owner, Abdul, greeted us when we walked in, provided top-notch service, and made excellent small talk. We ordered a Turkish coffee (which was perfectly made). Abdul, was deliberate in his preparation and brewed it with skill and accuracy. We also ordered a more American coffee, a toffee latte with oat milk which was impeccably balanced -- sweet and smooth. I almost wish we lived in the area so we could come back every day until we've tried the entire menu. read more

The lattes all tasted like water but the desserts looked delicious and were at a fair price. Close to college and had a big, aesthetically pleasing room. Art for sale along the walls and couches or chairs to sit at. Very cute, but get a snack, not a drink. Ordered a drink and it was made quickly and brought to my table. Nice ambience. Nice and quick customer service. Ordered the matcha tasted milky pretty authentic had to add a pump of vanilla to give it a sweetness. Overall 6/10 for the matcha not the best but it's good. The Thai tea was just milk with orange dye . 5/10 Need to improve the flavors to be more authentic . First time visit from out of town might not be back for tea. Probs just stick to getting coffee here. read more

I was so excited to hear that a new eatery was coming to this strip of downtown Radford - it is so sorely needed! I stopped in to check them out today and I couldn't have been more impressed - lots of drinks options including coffee, espresso, lattes, macchiatos (everything you'd want out of a coffee shop), plus some specialty options like Turkish coffee and aromatic syrups for rose or lavender lattes. There was also a phenomenal selection of food (think brunch style): breakfast, lunch, and bakery options (the baked goods & pastries they said would rotate daily). It'll be nice to be able to grab an omelet, sweet or savory crepe, or even falafel platter just a few minutes from work at Radford University. I can imagine this becoming a staple student hangout spot with the cozy atmosphere, ample seating, and friendly, welcoming staff here. I tried the zaatar and cheese pizza (it was on a flatbread like base), tiramisu latte, and sampled their delicious baklava as well - I had to keep myself from ordering one of their many dessert options on top of that! I love that items on the menu feature Mediterranean and Middle Eastern flavors but remain accessible to anyone's palate. For example, I would HIGHLY recommend the zaatar and cheese pizza, even (or especially) if you've never tried zaatar seasoning before. Note: This week (6/27/22 - 6/30/22) they'll be open from 10am-6pm, and then after their grand opening on July 1st they'll switch to their regular hours of 7am-6pm (likely later during the spring and fall semester). read more

Arabica is an incredible place; the coffee is great, the food is incredible and the staff are beyond friendly. There's so much to recommend here I do t know where to begin - chicken shawarma crepes, saffron cake, eclairs, coffee cake, cookies and cheesecakes beyond listing, the list goes on and on. It's a comfortable place to lounge, meet, work or just drop in. Could not recommend more highly. read more

I could not believe, and was extremely disappointed in the amount of cream cheese on my $4.25 bagel and cream cheese. There was so little that you mostly tasted just the very bready, grocery store type bagel. I may come back, but certainly won't order it again. I feel like I got ripped off.
