When you are in Blacksburg, you have to try this place. I went there on a football game day with my girlfriend and son. The food was amazing! Good drink selection also. Did not have to wait long for our food. It was a good portion for the price and very flavorful. We got the 4 dip sampler, chicken shawarma and mixed kabob. We have eaten a lot of Mediterranean food, and this was some of the best. Get away from the downtown area and try something different! The rice was tasty and well cooked. The sandwich was a tad soggy with a bit too much sauce. The salmon itself was slightly overcooked and on the dry side with little flavor. My friend ordered the gyro and was equally disappointed. The meat looked microwaved and did not taste very good. The pita was thick and the gyro looked rather dry. If you do eat here, I suggest eating their food fresh; it may be a better experience than what I had. I will say that the food is filling at a decent price, but I will not be returning to this establishment. Head to Souvlaki's for a better Mediterranean experience. read more

One of good friends introduced me to Lucie Monroe's and ever since then I have been hooked. The menu has a good selection and variety to choose from. They also serve alcoholic drinks! I always order the Chicken Gyro Wrap with Rice. From my experiences, the chicken has always been moist and tender. The rice is absolutely delicious and I appreciate the small array of vegetables they offer with wrap. One small detail that I also very much appreciate is that while the chicken is moist and warm, the vegetables are still crisp and on the cool within the wrap. Every time I have visited, I was always well taken care of by who I assume is the owner. He is extremely attentive and kind. I take a while to order and he patiently waits, while answering any questions I have. I ended up sitting at a table that was slightly wobbly and he fixed it right away. I really like the vibe inside the establishment - it's very homey. They have outdoor seating, and they split the interior of the restaurant into two sections. The split is very unique and I actually like it a lot as far as interior design goes. The store doubles as a coffee shop and Mediterranean restaurant. We decided to try the Mediterranean food. I ordered the Chicken Kabob Platter, which comes with rice and pita bread, along with a side - I chose salad with Greek dressing. Everything is served with tahini sauce. (See attached image) The chicken was good! I think it could have used a little more salt, but I enjoyed the flavor nonetheless. The Chicken Kabob was seasoned the same way as the Chicken Shawarma; the only difference was that the kabob was cut into bigger pieces, and not sliced the way that shawarma typically is. The rice was solid. I enjoyed the Pita bread, and I liked the fact that they warmed it up. The salad was delicious; they put a lot of onion in there which I like. Our waitress recommended the Greek dressing, which is why I ordered it, but I ended up not liking it. Overall, the food was decent! It was not super amazing, but I enjoyed it. And the way they plate their food is excellent. The service at Lucie Monroe's was amazing. The owner of the restaurant brought our table free hummus and pita bread, which was super nice and delicious! We were the only people in the restaurant. I was freezing and ordered coffee and the guys had bottles of soda. On Friday and Saturday if you order 2 platters you get an appetizer free. We asked for the shrimp appetizer and was told we could get the hummus with pita bread, which was very good and warm. Josh got a gyro platter with one wrapped small gyro in foil and a small order of sweet potato waffle fries (1.99 extra) I had read their menu on their website and really wanted a Greek salad. Only salad on today's menu was a small side salad with lettuce cucumbers and Greek dressing on the side. Rick and I both had the Shawarma Platter, his with chicken, mine with steak. There were no peppers or onions on either. Mine just had shredded beef over rice, his was chicken over rice and tahini sauce on the side. There was no lamb kabobs or lamb platter which we were hoping for. We skipped dessert. The waiter took our orders and brought the food and we had to go find him to pay the check. This was, hands down, the worst restaurant experience I've had in a long time. It wasn't just that the whole meal was botched, but that I spoke with the owner (I think that was the owner) and his laziness disgusted me. I came in for lunch with my mom. We both like Mediterranean food and there was a deal on the Hooked app. She ordered the chicken shwarma and I had the falafel burger. The waitress forgot our drinks when she brought our food, and then after she left I realized that instead of the gorgeous falafel burger with fried eggplant and hummus, I'd gotten a very sad looking falafel in a flimsy cold pita, no eggplant or hummus. My mom's food was dry and bland. She asked the owner for tahini. When he brought it, I alerted him to having gotten the wrong order. "It's basically the same thing," he said. I had to remind him of the menu description and ask him for the missing items. He brought back a single slice of fried eggplant, and I had to chop it myself. My entree was pathetic even then, especially because the pita lacked structural integrity as well as deliciousness. It was already a terrible meal, but it got so much worse when we went up to pay. The owner was sitting on a couch hanging out with some people. He asked about the meal and I said we were very disappointed. He asked what happened. The whole time we were talking, he didn't even get off the couch, just turned his head a little. I summarized what had gone wrong with the meal. He said "Next time will be better." Simple because all their effort and time goes into making delicious, home-cooked meals. This is not just a remake of the coffee place you remember from Christiansburg that became a favorite of grad students and locals. Nor is this a copy of Belkoom, the previous tenant of this spot, known for its Lebanese flavors. The new concept and location for Lucie Monroe's feature delicious Egyptian dishes along with lots of coffees and nice salads. The fava beans, hummus, and other veg dishes are subtle and satisfying, and the meat dishes, especially the shawarma, are also very good. Haven't tried the kushari yet, but it's on my list. The name evokes one of those places from the 80s or 90s with a Western saloon theme, serving dishes called Buffalo Bill or Rocky Racoon, but Lucie Monroe's is actually a down-to-earth Middle Eastern place where you can enjoy simple, healthy food and chat with the friendly owner. read more
