The good: space! Nice locker room, hot tub, steam room, sauna, lounge. The bad: They turned off the steam room, sauna, and tub and removed the water 45 minutes before they closed, which was very disappointing. The ugly: The massage started out fine - other than the therapist stating that he didn't care for/about the aromatherapy products they offer as part of the massage. Like, okay. Let's do something anyway! He kept scratching my neck with his fingernail. Then he eased off my calf after I said ouch, but I said I think we can finish with that leg, but he kept going. Definitely going to bruise. His motions were abrupt from the beginning, but got increasingly rushed and anxious. His massage was rushed and fast. Moving around the room, he was opening drawers hard and sitting down hard. By the end, I asked if he wouldn't mind slowing down as he was rubbing my next and it was making me anxious he was going so fast! I'm not an anxious person. I thought I could maybe relax the stressful massage off in the steam room, but as I mentioned above, it was off. The real ugly: The final insult to injury - 18% service charge plus gratuity. Total cost - $323 for just barely 80 minutes of a sometimes painful, ultimately stressful massage. The front desk was uninterested in my experience. I'm sure the actual services here are great but I guess my husband & I will never know. 5 minutes before we were about to head downstairs to the Spa for our 50 minute couples massage, Ara called to cancel our appointment. One of our two techs called in sick so we no longer had the option to do our appointment. The spa offered us the ability to do a 25 minute couples massage (you can't do a real full body resort massage treatment in less then 30 mins), or we do 50 minute massages back to back. The latter is also a pointless suggestion as it defeats the purpose of the couples experience and takes up a longer chunk of your day which we couldn't do last minute. I get that people have sick days/things happen, but this is a resort. If its a travel destination, it really cuts into the vacation experience to lose one of your key activities. read more

My wife and I wanted a nice little get away so we booked it up to Ameristar in Blackhawk. We went online and booked a couples massage only to find out you have to state that there will be 2 people in the couples massage (thought that was what couples meant) only to find out that they only reserved 1 massage therapist. Kind of disappointed but thought oh well I will just use the spa facility while my wife got pampered. We arrived early so we could use some of the amenities only to find out the amenities is a hot tub and sauna and not co-ed. The only co-ed spot was in the lounge. We should have done some research. Next time we will go back to Monarch where they have a co-ed salt room, sauna, hot tub and much much more. read more

Terrible experience with this spa. I booked and got confirmed for a couples massage but less than 24 hours in advance they cancelled the appointment saying it was booked wrong. They have no other appointments and ruined the 40th birthday celebration we had planned. This trash business doesn't deserve your money and I would avoid Ameristar completely. Guest services pulled the classic no one wants to work and then when I asked for a supervisor they lied to me and told me none were available. Turns out three seconds later he told me is the supervisor and they won't help regarding any of the business they allow to operate at their casino. My ideal relaxation scenario: a deep tissue massage coupled with hydrotherapy, and just chilling stress-free for a few hours - Ara Spa easily fulfills this request. The first visit wasn't as nice as the sauna and steam room were set at a temperature way too low. The second visit, they must have fixed the issue as the dry sauna was HOT and the steam room cycled like it supposed to. The whirlpool was never an issue, always the perfect setting. A bowl of cool eucalyptus soaked towels, located next to the resting area provided an excellent face aromatherapy in-between cycles. The use of these facilities are included with any spa treatment or a day pass can be obtained for $30 on Sun-Wed, and $50 on Thurs-Sat. This is their suggested routine: shower rinse away the day's stress 3 min steam purify your mind and body 5-10 min shock plunge in the cold shower 1 min sweat feel the heat in the dry sauna 5-10 min shiver refresh with a cold shower 1 min submerge relax in the whirlpool 10-15 min shower conclude with a warm shower I opted for the Rocky Mountain Ritual (after spending a couple of hours in hydrotherapy, of course), a 50 minute treatment that included an exfoliating salt scrub with a hydrating body butter mini massage application. An in-room shower allowed for the salt can be washed off after the scrub prior to the massage. The massage portion, though short, was one of the best deep massages I have ever had. I recommended to the front desk that this be offered as a 90 minute treatment, extending the massage portion for best results. There are snacks, fruits and tea for your enjoyment in the waiting room/lounge in front of a fireplace. I don't know if any spa in Black Hawk even comes close to this one. I really enjoyed this spa. It's the kind of place that you can hang around all day and just relax. There's a great locker room/bathroom area that has plenty of amenities in case you forgot anything. The robes and sandals they provide are very comfortable. If you have a service done, the "splash" area is included, otherwise I think it's $30/day. It has a hot tub, sauna, and steam room, plus there are lounge chairs and ice water to drink. These areas aren't coed, there's a men's side and a women's side. Once you're ready for your appt, there's a coed waiting area that has ice water, tea, fruit, and trail mix to snack on. You can relax here both before and after your appointment before going back to get changed (or head back to the sauna). I had a prenatal massage done, and they had a special pillow on the table for me to lay on that accomodated my stomach. Josh, my massage therapist, was wonderful. I told him I wanted just a light touch since it was my first time getting a massage while pregnant. He listened to what I wanted, and even explained away some fears that I had about pregnancy and massages. The entire staff was great, and checkout/payment was very simple. When they ring you up they ask if it's okay to include a 20% tip, so I didn't even have to pull out the tip calculator on my phone. Besides the restaurants here, this is the best part of the Resort, for me at least. I am not much of a gambler person, I'd rather spend my money here than the slot machines. It's kinda hard to watch your hard work earnings disappear in a min without any full enjoyment, not even a 5 min adrenaline rush. Lol. The services are a tad pricey, but so worth it. $50.00 just to have access to the spa, sooo you might as well spend money on an hour massage or any other services to have the access for free. :) Clean facility, great service and awesome staff. When you head to a resort, especially a gambling resort, you are not surprised when the prices for all the amenities - especially the upscale amenities - are just a tad higher than normal. So, when we got the prices for the services at the ARA spa at Ameristar Casino Resort in Blackhawk, I was blown away. They were reasonable! Extremely reasonable. The Spa is on the upper floor of the hotel. Away from the noise and crowds. And the spa facilities are beautiful. What a wonderful place to relax and unwind after a hard days gambling! It is so relaxing that you can just go to ARA . . . . forget the gambling! read more

I arrived to the spa ten minutes before my appointment. The front desk girl said she'd show me to my locker, let me change and then show me to the relaxation room where i could wait for my massage. I changed and then she was nowhere to be found. I wandered about and found a seat by the hot tub. I sat there and saw her walk by and empty the towels and do a few things to pick up, all without saying a word to me. I waited there for 15 minutes. At this point I was 15 minutes late for my massage. I finally went to look at the massage rooms and ran into the masseuse. He hurried to get me into the room. Tried to sell me on upgrades and insisted one was free. I picked one but i don't think he even did it. The overall massage was bad. He made my neck turn in weird positions, the towel did not cover me properly. He spent way too much time on my glutes. The first question he asked me was what i did for a living. While I'm on the table trying to relax. He did weird light playing finger motions? Ew. He also pushed hard on my peck muscleS. Dude, I'm not a guy. I have C sized boobs, OW. I walked out of there in pain. Back pain. Knee pain. Foot pain. I tried to relax in the hot tub and massage it out myself. When I got back to the front desk there was no one there to check me out. I waited for ten minutes until the girl who has forgotten about me appeared. She apologized as she had "too many people and only one of her to go around." I was the only person in there most of the time. Just such a bad spa experience for the cost. Don't waste your money or time. It also wasn't very clean. Go somewhere else read more

The Ara Spa is one of my favorite spas in Colorado. This spa is what brings me to the Ameristar. Yesterday I had a massage with Zoe. I had forgotten how good she is. She hits every tight knot in your body. What's great is she did some stretching to really get into the tight muscles that helped a lot. I only wish it lasted longer. Sheila is a great massage therapist too. I love that the people that work here really know what they are doing. Zoe asked several times about the pressure and how much pressure would I like. It was perfect. The women's spa is so clean and the perfect place to relax with a book or magazine. I spent about an hour and half lounging and going from the hot tub, sauna and steam room. They had orange blueberry water that was refreshing. In the lounge room there is a fireplace and they have flavorful teas. The spa womens area is a peaceful tranquil retreat. read more

I was visiting my son & daughter in-law in Denver & we decided to go to Black Hawk & stay at the Ameristar Hotel. While there we went to the Ara Spa to look at their spa menu. My son & daughter in-law booked a couples massage & dream weaver for the following day & I booked a 50 min. Massage plus the dream weaver for the following day as well. From the minute I checked in I felt welcome. Sarah gave me a tour of the facility's & helped me with my locker. She was so sweet :) I had some time before my treatment so I decided to sit in the steam room for a bit...so nice! I then went in to their relaxation lounge to have a cup of tea & wait for my therapist. My massage therapist, Tony arrived promptly to pick me up for my treatment. He truly listened to me when I told him about my problem areas & worked on those areas & didn't on others ( I have a shoulder that dislocates easily & didn't want that area worked on) I could tell that he not only had great training but he had intention behind his touch. I've had many massages where that was lacking. Tony is a talented therapist. I've worked as an Esthetician for 17 years in 5 star hotel spas & rarely take the time for myself to be on the receiving end. I'm usually the one giving the treatment. It was so nice being a guest at the Ara Spa & receiving an AMAZING massage!!! The facility's are truly top notch as well. There is very little to do in Black Hawk other than gamble, so I head to spa any chance I get. I'll preface my remarks by saying that I've been to many, many spas. The Ara Spa ranks right up there with the top ones I've been to. Front desk was very helpful in our booking, our massages were delightful and I had some waxing done. This was my first visit to this spa and my experience was awesome! It started when I first walked in and was impressed with the decor and the modern feel of the place. I had just enough time to enjoy the delicious fruit water in the waiting area before my incredible massage started. My massage therapist Kelly took me into the massage room for my sports aromatherapy session. It was the best massage I had ever gotten and was exactly what I needed after a weekend of backpacking! Amazing. I am vacationing in Denver and after 2 long days of hiking up mountains and strenuous activity, I decided I'd use my last day here to have a more relaxing experience. This spa is so luxurious, one of the nicest ones I've ever been to. There is a separate section for men and woman which is clothing optional. You can relax in the women's spa before and after your massages. There is a sauna, steam room, and jacuzzi pool. There are cool soaked cucumber towels which are amazing after 20 minutes in the steam room. I came with my boyfriend for a couples massage and we were both really happy with our massages. Loved this spa!! I had a massage, which was great. Best part of the experience though was being able to hang out there as much as you want that day! It is gorgeous! They had pineapple-mint water, apples, tea, sauna, steam room, hot tub, relaxation room, showers, and more. One negative was that in the afternoon it was a mess. I had my massage in the morning and it was in tip top shape! I went back in the afternoon/evening to use the sauna again and there were dirty cups everywhere, shoes all over, the laundry hampers were overflowing, water was gone, tea was gone, and dirty towels were covering most of the seats so there was no place to sit. So...take advantage of the morning there when it is clean and beautiful! read more

What a great find. I like spas where I can hang out and relax for awhile either before or after my treatment, which I have difficulty finding in the Denver/Boulder area. This place has a nice lounge area with teas, cucumber water, and fruit. There is also an area with a really nice whirlpool/hot tub, steam room, and dry sauna just in the women's area so you don't have to share with the rest of the hotel. This area also has several comfy lounge chairs to sit in and relax. There are also iced washcloths for your face. There is a decent vanity and shower area with everything you need to wash up and do your hair. The massage was pretty terrific also, very relaxing and professional. I didn't want to leave. You need to have an appointment for a treatment, but I found out you can pay for a "day pass" to just use the spa as long as you like. I'm planning on taking my mom there for a Mother's Day gift. Talk about heaven on earth! I've been to Ameristar on several different occasions but have never visited the spa until a few weeks ago. I'm on my third visit in less than a month! The quality of their spa was worth their high prices! Staff were highly attentive and made certain I was comfortable and familiar with the facility. I made sure to utilized the entire spa including the shower, sauna, and hot tub. They also provided some great snacks and fruit infused water. Beautiful spa, poor customer service. I've been to the spa a few times over the past couple of years. It is a beautiful spa and the massages I've had have been great, but last weekend I went up and had awful customer service that will deter me from returning. My mom and specifically planned a trip to Blackhawk around going to the Ara Spa. After checking in and enjoying the spa my mom was called back for her massage. Shortly after the lady from the front desk came back to inform me that my therapist had gone home sick. I was told I could either wait two hours to get a massage or I could return on a different day for 30% off. Since I was with my mom I didn't want to wait any longer and since I live over an hour away 30 percent off is not enough of a discount to get me drive up for a second time so I declined either offer. After the massage my mom complained that it would have been easier if they had notified both of us prior to taking either of us back and the response we got was, "the therapist went home sick, we didn't want her to throw up on you. We offered you a discount." I understand that things happen but at a spa of this quality I feel that things should have been dealt with in a more professional manner. I will not be returning for my 30% off or at any point in the future. read more

I loved this spa! It's a little pricey but for a hotel it is not bad at all. I got a great manicure from a very friendly lady. (I wish I remembered her name!) I was also the only guest while I was there. My only complaint was that they didn't have many options of nail polish colors. They were all kind of 'old lady-ish'.
