I by no means want to lose a ton of weight, but everyone always says that their wedding day was the skinniest they've ever been and if this is the skinniest I'm going to be I'm destined for a fat life! I recently took a "healthy in a hurry" class with registered and licensed Dietician, Dawn Jackson Blatner, at the Chopping Block. I was impressed by Dawn's knowledge and enthusiasm and even learned a thing or two about cooking. And this is coming from the girl who can barely boil a pot of water. If you like it, let me know. If not, keep it to yourself. I kid, I kid...feedback ALWAYS welcome. Anyway, I couldn't believe how much I learned from just interviewing Dawn over the phone! I've been hearing Dawn's voice in my head over the past month while eating at restaurants (ex: stay away from anything sauteed, only order dessert if there are 3 other people at the table to share it with, etc). I'm pretty good at sticking to my weight watchers (well, besides the cake problem), and I'm only of the few people in this world who enjoys working out, but I thought if I had just a few more tips from Dawn I'd be taking in that wedding dress at least 2 sizes! Well, maybe just 1 size, but a girl can dream! I booked an hour long session with Dawn (she sees patients every Friday at her Michigan Avenue office) and it was the most fun I had all week! I told her a little bit about my challenges of eating healthy (especially when I travel for work) and she gave me a few great pointers that I can't wait to put into use! The best thing about Dawn is that you can tell she truly loves her job; I've never seen someone get so excited about eating healthy! But if I start looking as good in my pants as Dawn looks in hers I'll be all about fruits and veggies too!. Even if i can't have my cake...

    I can't say enough good things about Dawn. I was referred to her by a friend who had so many great…read morethings to say about her, and I was definitely not dissapointed1 I have had chronic digestive issues my whole life, which had recently gotten worse. I wanted to meet with a nutritionist as opposed to a MD because I believe the body is meant to heal itself. Many diseases can be treated with the right diet, however western medicine likes to treat things with a little pill, which will only mask and not really heal anything. Anyways - for 2 weeks before our first meeting she had me track everything I ate and all the digestive issues I experienced in a food log. When I came in to see her, we spoke about my issues and then she went over the my food log with me. She had SO much information and was able to make it seem so simple and logical and easy to understand. We talked about how I ate, sitting down to meals, chewing food, things I ate, drinking water with meals, chewing gum and on and on. Beside addressing my digestive issues she also gave me advice and tidbits about how to eat healthier in general. Portions, types of foods, etc. I left with at least 5 items to change in my eating habits and many other suggestions for eating healthier. What I loved best about Dawn's approach was she really didn't ask for me to do a huge diet overhaul and entirely change everything. She looked at what I was already doing and gave suggestions on how to tweak it to make it healthier and easier on my digestive system. She's also a great person to work with, full of energy and enthusiasm, and chock full of knowledge. I would even recommend seeing her if you don't have a specific issue, but just want to be healthier in general. She totally changed my life (seriously) and was worth every penny.

Read…read morethe macros and the other the data and thought I was on the right track but never felt better. I was misguided by a local Fitness Club Nutritionist who had me on a 1200 calorie diet. She checked the box after my 15 min visit. I did not have enough fiber in my diet (digestive issues) along with just good nutrition to help my gut! I connected with Jess about 1 1/2 years ago and have a better understanding of nutrition. To be honest, I was just eating and hoping for the best! Jess is thoughtful, she listens and explains if you eat this with that, how it will help build a better you. She is not here to say, stop eating this or that. She is here to help you be a better version of you! Healthier and Happier! I have had digestive issues for years (40) and assumed I would have it forever like my family. Jess has introduced me to a couple of supplements that have helped greatly. I have a better understanding of reading labels, nutrition and most important, feedback from a professional. An App can't give you that. She has suggested things that I normally walk by in a grocery store. I have been pleasantly surprised by new food! Jess takes a realistic approach to whatever lifestyle changes you are trying to make and encourages moderation. It's been helpful and refreshing to have someone understand that food is such a big part of our happiness and lifestyle. Jess has taught me how to enjoy and appreciate food again instead of labeling things as good or bad. Because Jess helped me take better care of my body physically, I've also been able to make huge strides forward with my mental health. I tried a few of her suggestions at home (ex: make your own pizza on a whole wheat english muffin) and was shocked when my extremely picky 4.5 yr old ate it. From there I booked an appointment with Lara with the hopes that she'd give me some more healthy suggestions of what to feed Miss Picky and mealtimes would stop becoming a battle. Since our first meeting over a month ago I've used so many of her meal and snack suggestions and am so pleased w/ the way my kids are eating. Unlike his sister my 2 year old has always been a very good eater, but it's even been helpful when it comes to feeding him. I like that Lara is realistic. My daughter absolutely refuses to eat any fruit so she's told me there's no need to try giving it to her. She also completely understands that I don't have the time nor the desire to cook, yet still has ways for my kids to eat healthy without cooking. For those who do like to cook there are some great recipes on her website...and her pinterest page is full of helpful info whether you cook or not. I had a follow-up meeting w/ Lara this week and feel like we've already made so many improvements (thanks to her), yet I still came home with new meal/snack ideas from our time together. Highly recommend if you have a picky eater, a kid with food allergies or other limitations (celiac?) and/or are just clueless (like me!) on what to feed your kids.

She'll ask you about your lifestyle and what foods you enjoy and which you don't. She's not going to say things like, "Never eat that!" Instead she'll introduce you to new recipes and talk about how delicious they are! She will not overwhelm you by suggesting you change everything immediately. Instead, you'll work together to set small goals in each session based on what is most important to you and guess what? Not all of the goals have to be food related but they can be. One of my goals was to stop eating lunch at my desk and actually take a break to eat and enjoy my meal. She will suggest ideas that work for you instead of having a single approach for everyone. For me, I hate conventional dieting, it stresses me out and just thinking about it makes me anxious. So many diets suggest journaling to track everything you eat and drink. So instead of insisted that I journal, she asked me how I felt about journaling and I told her the same thing that I wrote here. She calmly explained why journaling is a useful tool for her to understand my current habits, like what types of food I'm eating, when I eat and how much. Instead of doing it every day, she asked if I could just do it once a week. Anyway, that's just an example of how she'll work with YOU! Stephanie is a very active person and understands that your life is possibly different than hers, so unless it's a goal that you want to have, she's not going to suggest you spend hours exercising everyday. So when she tells you about her active lifestyle, don't be intimidated or think she expects you to do the same. She's going to ask what you want, so be honest with yourself about that if you want to be successful. I'm sure you're wondering about my results. Well, I didn't go to Stephanie with my primary objective related to my weight, I wanted to enjoy a broader variety of foods and not be obsessed with food (as a result of conventional dieting, I was obsessed with food and counting calories), I wanted to focus on eating enough of the right foods consistently at meals to avoid binges. And that's how my life is now. I focus on eating enough but not too much, unless I'm hungry, then I eat, and I stopped drinking Diet Coke. That was one of my main goals, so mission accomplished! Thank you, Stephanie!!! Also and most important, spending time with Stephanie is fun and enjoyable! We always laughed a lot and shared stories. You'll look forward to going to see her.

And that's within our control. Stephanie helped me identify eating triggers. We set mutually agreed upon goals for each week. She's understanding, encouraging, and knowledgeable. I've tried a lot of weight lose approaches over the years but working with Stephanie has produced the best results. I've been losing about a pound a week and will continue on her weekly maintenance program to make sure that my new eating habits are firmly established.
